She hated walking at  \nnight but there wasn't much choice in the world and she had no  \nhorse to ride. she gripped the handle of her sword  \nreassuringly knowing that a member of the feline military would  \nlove to catch a tender fox maiden alone and do things  \nto her before he killed her. She wasn't far from her home now but  \nher senses were primed as she heard a noise behind  \nher. Miriana spun around drawing her sword from beneath her cloak  \nand brought it to bear on a feline soldier he  \nstumbled back a bit.  \n\"What the hell? You maidens are not supposed to wield weapons  \nyour laws forbid it.\" Miriana smiled a little  \n\"That's true but then again what am I supposed to do submit  \nto your perverted whims?\" she snarled  \n\"Watch where you aim your sword bitch or I'll be forced to  \nkill you.\"  \n\"You're welcome to try it bastard.\" The feline drew his sword  \nand charged Miriana expecting an easy kill but  \nMiriana knew how to use a sword and easily parried his attack. She  \nside stepped then brought her sword down in a  \nback handed swing be-heading the feline soldier spraying his blood  \nover the soft white snow. Miriana wiped her sword  \nclean on his tunic the took his sword from his hand. \"Thanks I  \ncould always use another sword.\" She spat on the  \nsoldiers body and continued on home.  \n  \n\n\u0026nbsp; When she entered her home she built a fire and began to  \nprepare herself dinner. Miriana hated living alone but  \nthe males were scared of her a fox maiden who was as skilled as  \nthey were with a sword. She sat down to her lonely  \ntable and ate her meal. She looked out the window with a sigh. It  \nhad been to long a winter for her taste and they were  \nlosing the war against the felines it seemed. How else would that  \nsoldier have been able to get far enough in to attack  \nher on her way home. She needed to inform the village elders of  \nthis but how they would know she had battled. They  \nhated the fact that she was able to battle it went against  \ntradition of the males protecting the females but she had little  \nchoice she trembled at the thought of her punishment. She would be  \nwhipped in a humiliating public display and her  \nsword taken from her. but it didn't matter the village elders  \ndidn't know she always kept her enemies weapons for just  \nthis type of thing. No what concerned her most was she was not yet  \nfully healed from her last punishment and now she  \nlooked at another. Miriana shuddered. 'Perhaps they will show  \nmercy for a time.' Then she snorted in disbelief \"Yeah  \nright!\" She muttered out loud as she got up from her table and  \nwent to her bedroom. She stripped her cloak off and  \nhung it by the fire to dry as she slipped naked beneath the rough  \ncovers and curled up tightly. Trying not to think of  \nwhat she would face tomorrow but she had to tell someone and there  \nwas no male she trusted enough to be her  \nmessenger. Miriana whimpered in advance thought of the pain and  \nhumiliation she would face before she slipped into  \nan uneasy sleep.  \n  \n\n\u0026nbsp; She awoke to the sounds of birds outside her windows and  \ncrawled out of bed. She built another fire and  \nwrapped herself in her cloak. She looked at the felines sword and  \ndecided to take that one instead of the one she had  \nused to kill him. She sheathed the felines sword at her hip as she  \ncooked her breakfast then she headed into the village.  \nShe walked past the remains of the soldier who had challenged her  \nthe previous night. She looked at the body then spat  \non his body once more before continuing on.  \n  \nWhen she arrived at the village she swallowed hard as she  \nheaded for the elders council chambers she  \napproached the building with a feeling of dread knotting in her  \nstomach but they must know she straightened herself  \nand walked meekly as maidens were supposed to as she entered the  \nbuilding. The members of the council were  \ndiscussing something when she heard the word feline in their  \nconversation 'Could they already know am I saved from a  \nwhipping?' she asked herself as she sat silently with the other  \nmaidens listening with intense concentration to the elders  \n  \n\n\u0026nbsp; \"Yes there were several raids by feline soldiers last night  \nthey killed many of our soldiers before they were  \nstopped but one escaped and ran north.\" One stated Miriana's blood  \nfroze in her veins her home was to the north of the  \nvillage.  \n\"Well did he get away or was he caught later on?\" Another  \nelder demanded.  \n\"I'm afraid I don't know. But there is one here who lives to  \nthe north perhaps she saw something.\" Miriana  \nswallowed hard as the elder called out \"Maiden Miriana please come  \nforward.\" Miriana swallowed hard as she rose and  \nwalked to the front of the room. \"Well what brought you here today  \nMaiden Miriana?\" Miriana pulled her cloak back  \nrevealing the felines sword strapped to her hip her eyes on the  \nfloor as gasps sounded at a armed maiden. \"Was this a  \nfeline soldiers sword Maiden Miriana?\" she nodded as the elder  \nreached out and drew the sword from the scabbard. \"I  \nsee tell me Maiden Miriana were you as I suspect responsible for  \nthe death of the feline soldier?\" Again Miriana  \nnodded in silence the elder sighed .\"Tell me Maiden Miriana have  \nyou learned no lessons from your various public  \npunishments?\" Miriana shook her head as the elder looked at her.  \n\"Show us your back Maiden Miriana.\" She  \nswallowed and removed her cloak turning to face the audience the  \nelder sighed again. \"Maiden Miriana your wounds  \nare not yet healed from your last whipping will you ever learn  \nthat maidens are not supposed to fight?\" Miriana shook  \nher head. \"Why?\" he asked Miriana kept her eyes on the floor as  \nshe answered  \n\"Because elder I live alone and have no male to protect me  \nfrom harm.\" The elder nodded a single maiden was  \nnot easily found in this village. \"Why have you not told us this  \nbefore Maiden Miriana?\" Miriana looked at the floor  \nand shrugged. \"Were you aware Maiden Miriana that if you had told  \nus this before you would have spared yourself all  \nthe pain and humiliations.\" To the shock of all there she nodded  \nher head. \"You were aware of this and you never said  \nanything why?\" Miriana spoke softly  \n\"Because elder I didn't wish to be an exception to our  \ntraditions.\" She stated meekly the elder touched her shoulder  \ntenderly.  \n\"I realize that Maiden Miriana tell me why are you alone?\"  \nMiriana looked at the floor and shrugged before answering.  \n\"Most of the males either fear me or dislike me it seems  \nelder so I am not alone by choice.\" The elder looked at her down  \nbowed head and humble demeanor this maiden was all she should be  \nand more why should the males fear or dislike her so?  \n\"Look at me Maiden Miriana please.\" She shuddered.  \n\"But elder I am a maiden and I am not allowed to cast my eyes  \nupon you.\"  \n\"Ah but when we ask you to you are allowed Maiden Miriana so  \nplease let me see you.\" Miriana slowly looked up at the elder  \nbefore her he was barely older than she and he was handsome.  \n\"I see not why a male should dislike you Maiden Miriana. I got angry and  \nattacked him. He was surprised to see a maiden challenge him and  \nthat surprise was his worst mistake. I see no reason for any one  \nto dislike you or fear you.\" Miriana smiled. \"Do you wish to live  \nalone Miriana with no male to protect you.\" Miriana stumbled a  \nlittle at his comment \"Of course I realize you do not need the  \nprotection as any other fox-maid but still if it came to it don't  \nyou want a male to battle at your side?\" Miriana sighed  \n\"Of course I would like a mate who would be glad to have me  \njoin him in battle but I do not see that happening any time soon  \nFenris.\" He stopped and looked at her.  \n\"I do not fear nor dislike you I find it odd but I would find  \nit an honor to battle at your side.\" Miriana blushed as he lifted  \nher chin to look into her eyes. \"How many summers are you  \nMiriana?\" she looked into his eyes startled by what she saw there.  \nThere was no judgement but open honest admiration.  \n\"Merely 19 Fenris.\" He smiled at her  \n\"I myself am only 22 summers Miriana and I am not mated to  \nanyone I would be most honored if you would consider me for a  \nmate.\" Miriana couldn't believe what she was hearing from this  \nelder. I mean surely as an elder you have your choice  \nof any single maiden in the village.\" Fenris smiled before  \nanswering her.  \n\"This is true Miriana. but you knew as a single maiden  \ndefending herself were exempt from the public humiliation and  \nwhipping but instead you chose to receive your punishments Why?\"  \nMiriana shrugged.  \n\"I don't know maybe I deserved them in some way.\" Fenris  \nshook his head  \n\"I don't believe that for an instant Miriana.\" She shrugged  \nagain. \"Please Miriana consider me as your mate.\" He added.  \n\"I have been since you asked me too Fenris.\" She confessed to  \nhim he looked into her eyes and saw adoration radiating from them.  \nMiriana blushed as he held her close for a moment.  \n\"Come with me Miriana please.\" She looked at the elder and  \nnodded her assent. He smiled and gestured to an open caf‚. They  \nsat down and ate lunch together talking lively drawing looks of  \nshock from everyone around them at the maiden talking so freely  \nwith an elder. When the meal was over they left and walked down to  \nthe river side. As they sat there a feline scout broke cover and  \ntried to run away but Miriana and Fenris gave chase they were  \nnearly with him when he rounded a corner they followed and ran  \ninto a small group of feline warriors.  \n\"Well, well what do we have here but a tender young fox-  \nmaid.\" He sniggered \"Kill the male.\" He ordered and Miriana drew  \nher sword.  \n\"Make one move and it will be your last.\" She snarled as  \nFenris drew his sword at her side. He leaned over to her not  \ntaking his eyes off the enemy.  \n\"Looks like I get to battle alongside of you sooner than I  \nhad thought.\" Miriana smiled at his comment but was waiting as one  \nof the felines advanced he took a swing at her expecting a amateur  \nattempt to fight from her but was shocked as she easily blocked  \nhis swing and quickly followed with a swing of her own slicing his  \nthroat. The feline dropped his sword and grabbed his throat as he  \ncollapsed. She scooped up the sword and stood ready.  \n\"Any one else?\" the remaining five charged and Miriana used  \nboth swords with the skill of a seasoned warrior as she cut and  \nslashed the enemies around her while Fenris ran a feline through  \nand grabbed up the enemy sword as well the felines were easily  \ndefeated by the two. After the battle Miriana and Fenris stood  \npanting covered with sweat and the blood of their enemies she  \nturned to Fenris. \"I would be honored to accept you as my mate  \nFenris.\" He smiled at her  \n\"Nothing like a battle to make a maiden think huh.\" He took  \nMiriana in his arms and kissed her gently.
