She turned her head and spotted the gray fox on her bed. He hadn't shown up in over five years, and it was a shock to see him now. She met eyes with him, and felt a wave of guilt. He might as well have been saying, "How do you forget me so easily? I'm the one who's always been here for you..."   
  
Karyn swallowed and paused her music. "Why are you here?"   
  
Dylan didn't answer - true to form, he'd still never spoken a word. He just stared, and the   
feelings within her told her his meaning. I'm always here. You just don't always see me. You'll need me today.   
  
Karyn furrowed her brow. "Need you...?" Her mom knocked on her door and the fox on   
her bed vanished, as if it was her attention to him that had held him there and visible. "Come in?"   
  
Irene Alloway was crying. Karyn stared at her, then got up, closing her note book and   
heading for the door. "Mom? What's wrong?"
