of Poems\n\nThis is an \"epic\" poem of sorts, because its so long.\nI'm not going to say much about it, so I don't spoil it.","content":"The Other Place\n\n \n\nIts an interesting smell,\n\na dentist's office,\n\nI am half-awake,\n\naware of what going on around me,\n\nbut oblivious to any pain.\n\n \n\nI weakly try to move,\n\nknowing all too well that the anesthesia has done its work,\n\neven my red tail and my mouth\n\nthat were always moving about\n\nwere dormant.\n\n \n\nHe made me do this,\n\nMy beautiful and dumb lynx,\n\nhe metaphorically made this dentist appointment happen,\n\nI didn't blame him,\n\nI can be a bitch sometimes\n\n \n\nOut of the corner of my eye,\n\nI glimpse the dentist walk in,\n\nhe was wearing a plastic poncho,\n\nunderneath was the usual dentist garb,\n\n\"Weird,\" I thought.\n\n \n\nAs the dentist walked around,\n\nhis tail moved back and forth happily,\n\njust like mine would do,\n\nif it wasn't paralyzed,\n\nif I wasn't stuck her on the dentist chair.\n\n \n\nMy boyfriend said we need some space,\n\nthat meant 300 miles to him,\n\nfor some reason I was the one who moved,\n\nmy hazel eyed lynx may be sexy,\n\nbut I need to stop calling him my boyfriend.\n\n \n\nThe border collie dentist approaches me,\n\nhe greeted me personally when I walked in,\n\nThe collie was nice enough,\n\nAs were his teeth,\n\nbut I couldn't shake this small feeling of unease from the pit of my stomach.\n\nIt was the same feeling I'd get,\n\nwhen Dan would be out late on the weekend,\n\nI'd get this odd sense \u0026nbsp;in my stomach,\n\nThat as I was sitting at home,\n\nHe was with flirting, kissing, and fucking another guy.\n\n \n\nThe dentist's secretary seemed off as well,\n\nshe was all smiles and nothing else,\n\nlike the woman in a horror film,\n\nwho invite you into her house,\n\nthen five minute later reveals her torture chamber in the basement.\n\n \n\nI know I watch too many horror films,\n\nor at least I used to with Dan,\n\nand I don't like to judge,\n\nso I shut my ever churning mind off,\n\nand close my eyes.\n\n \n\nI feel a paw slide something over my muzzle,\n\nmy eyelids flutter open to see the dentist,\n\nputting a gas inhaler over my muzzle,\n\nI start to drift,\n\nseconds later my heavy eyelids close.\n\n \n\nIt is imperative what I set in those last few seconds,\n\nthe secretary appears by the dentist's side,\n\nshe is holding a sharp dagger in one paw and a clipboard in another,\n\nthe dentist takes the knife\n\nAnd I fade finally into blackness.\n\n \n\nIt's a dreamless cosmic sleep,\n\nthe kind everyone wants,\n\nbut nobody gets,\n\nWhen I wake up,\n\nI feel out of place.\n\n \n\nIt's dark and smells damp,\n\nI can see anything,\n\nin fact it looks like the blackens stretches into oblivion,\n\nI realize I can set myself,\n\nI'm completely naked.\n\n \n\nI don't feel a temperature at all,\n\nnothing hurts,\n\nI feel no pain,\n\nI call out,\n\nto see if anyone is hiding in the blackness.\n\n \n\nSilence is my answer,\n\nAm I dead,\n\nis this really it,\n\nmy paw absentmindedly brushed the side of my abdomen,\n\nand I pull it away immediately.\n\n \n\nWhen my paw touched my torso,\n\nit felt like I was dipping it in water,\n\nCold, icy water,\n\nI looked down,\n\nto find my same vulpine body.\n\n \n\nIf I was really dead,\n\nwhat would my family do,\n\nwhat would Dan think,\n\nwould he miss me,\n\nNo come this is just a dream.\n\n \n\nI suddenly became transfixed by a red slash,\n\nthat had appeared right in the middle of my chest,\n\nthen another on either side of my back,\n\nanother and another,\n\nuntil my fur was striped with deep slashes in my skin.\n\n \n\nI tried to walk,\n\nand found I could just fine,\n\nthe ground beneath me felt like a glass pane,\n\nready to break at any moment,\n\nmy paws treaded lightly.\n\n \n\nMy black dipped paws were outstretched,\n\nlooking for a wall or some obstruction,\n\nI had walked for what seemed like hour until I came to a revelation,\n\nI was dead,\n\nand there's nothing to do about it.\n\n \n\nI stood, hunched over, eye brimming with tears,\n\nhow did this happen,\n\nat a dentist office of all places,\n\nI couldn't feel my tears,\n\nI couldn't feel anything now.\n\n \n\nMy eye shut,\n\nif this was how it was going to end,\n\nI wanted it to be over with,\n\nfor my existence at whatever this place was to end,\n\nto end forever.\n\n \n\nJust as I was about to sit down and ponder,\n\nI saw a light ahead in the darkness,\n\nMiniscule and far away,\n\nI stood tall and filled with hope walked toward it.\n\n \n\nIt felt like mere moment and I was there,\n\nlike I had jumped ahead in time,\n\nI was at a desk,\n\nit was crude on it was a piece of paper,\n\non the paper there was a tidy scrawl.\n\n \n\nIt read:\n\nwrite the name of the person you love,\n\nI wiped tears from my eyes with a paw,\n\nmy other paw suddenly held a pen,\n\nI wrote down his name.\n\n \n\nThe note suddenly burst into flames,\n\nthen I was standing in an apartment I was unfamiliar with,\n\nI looked down to find I was still naked and cut up,\n\nI run a paw through the fabric of the couch in front me\n\nthat's when I notice the picture.\n\n \n\nIt's a portrait of Dan,\n\nyet I'm nowhere to be seen,\n\ninstead he's holding the paw of a blue eyed dalmatian,\n\nI start to sob again,\n\nthen I hear a door open\n\n \n\nI hear people approaching,\n\nI wish my numbness could extend to my emotions,\n\nas my heart is broken,\n\nDan come into the room first,\n\nfollowed by who must be the dalmatian from the portrait.\n\n \n\nDan's paw are on his belt,\n\nthe dalmatian already has his pants,\n\nhalfway down,\n\nI feel such utter despair,\n\nand I fall to my knees\n\n \n\nNobody is there to comfort me,\n\nI kneel there as if praying,\n\nfor this all to end,\n\nthen I realize where I am,\n\nand I panic.\n\n \n\n-Kiah Z.\n\n
