-Chapter Twenty-three-

- Last Chapter: -

Oscar was back, and safe with the demons. But the perpetrator of it all, Fabien, managed to escape with the help of yet unknown entities. They appeared as women of class, but who knows what they really were. Along with them, Lestat seemed to be tagging along. They were informed that the lab indeed held demons for experimentation, and the large group of demons split up to rescue them.

_Author's Note: This chapter was going to end up a little different, but that might've resulted in further convolution. We don't really want that...._ _And this chapter's actually clean. Now that I think of it, some others are, as well_.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you analyzed what was going on; what was being uncovered, it's easy to realize a simple conclusion:
That things were getting very complicated.

Our world was rid of the female sex, and a lot of things are happening to our deteriorating home. We
were only scratching the surface, as it appeared. And among all the endless questions that formed,
one seemed to go unnoticed:

Why?

Why did the Virgin Virus exist in the first place?

Maybe scientists could speak of mutations of a previously mild virus. Maybe it was something that
came from outside the realm. I lean toward that option. It probably was forced into the realm, with
no good intent. Ultimately, that's something impossible to pinpoint with the little information we
had. But unlike before, its a possible cause. And yet, why?

Who could possibly want to do such a thing?

\*\*\*

We had doc Oscar back with us, thankfully unharmed. Maybe later on he could tell us what happened
while Fabien held him there. Speaking of that lunatic, he was gone, thanks to some entities yet
unknown to us. That man could not be left wandering around; he certainly had no good intentions;
not for our kind or anything, apparently. Surely we'd go after them much later, but we still had
other things to worry about. A lot of our world still remains unchecked. We still do not know who's
willing to help restore it.

At the facility we remained. The human employees had swiftly fled the place entirely, and that was
going to make things much smoother for all of us. After finding out that there had been experiments
in that very same facility with incubi, our goal was to scour the place and rescue any that still
remained captive. The group I tagged with came across an unconscious incubus, which Gai carried over
his shoulder as we kept wandering the facility. This young demon seemed to have barely hit full
adulthood and something was different about him. He lacked wings, but that was fairly normal. The
thing was that he had no claws. All demons and even cambions have claws, but this one just had a
human's fingers. That simply struck me as odd; just slightly, but still.

The rest of the exploration was mundane. Each corner was similar to the last, and the place quickly
lost all trace of human presence. The faint sound of their cars aiding their escape could be heard.
Our rescued demon just laid limp over Gai's shoulder, and eventually the trail we had taken led us
outside, right under the afternoon sun.

- "Ah... nothing. Not sure if that's good or bad." - Ari scratched his head.

- "Did we look hard enough...?" - Rafael asked.

- "It's not like they're gonna hide one of us in every nook and cranny... are they?" - Hayden
wondered.

- "I don't think so. We found ourselves this little fella, I'm sure he'll be thankful to get out of
that terrible place." - Gai mentioned.

- "If it were up to me, I'd level the place." - Rude coldly suggested, and that got him looks from
Ari, Hayden, Rafael and me.

He just had his arms crossed.

- "What?" - He asked in a "What's wrong with that?" tone.

- "The place will be deserted soon. If we leave it standing they can reclaim the place." - Rude
explained.

 We gave it thought. Hmm....

- "He does have a point." - Gai mentioned.

Rude snorted.

- "There should be another way to condemn the place." - Ari pondered.

- "I think we should talk about this when everyone's out. Maybe the others have better ideas." -
Rafael said.

We didn't really have to rush to blow up the place, after all...

\*\*\*

The group of new partners that recently joined had found two demons that were clearly experimented
on. Gideon and Belham, apparent mates; they were taken out of large pillar-like test tubes, which
were commonplace in a variety of the labs in the facility. The large Belham had a slight resemblance
to Tobey, but he seemed to be taller, and he lacked wings. Belham possessed a generally darker
complexion and a more gentle expression. Gideon was a normal sized incubus with a greenish tint to
his fur and mane. He was also fairly muscled, similar to Rude, and he had an overall serious
demeanor. While Belham remained focused on his mate, Gideon tagged along with the group.

They in hand left the pair in relative peace. Any explanations would come later.

- "I sure don't pick up any particular smell." - The tall Loren commented.

- "Just the null scent of the facility." - Paul agreed.

Along with Hoyt, Apollo, Hennesy, Anwar, Jeace, Rose and Vega, they treaded from one gateway to the
next. In the likely evacuation, all passages in the facility were fully accessible, maybe to
facilitate the evac.

Within minutes, they were finally outside.

- "I would've thought they'd have more captive demons." - Rose commented.

- "Don't get me wrong, though. I would hate that." - Rose then assured.

- "We have no idea how long have they been doing this, or how do they even manage to capture the
demons." - Hoyt stated.

- "Also, I really think that the structure should be destroyed." - Apollo suggested.

- "Hmm... indeed, but I don't think we should do anything about that just yet. There might be
collateral damage as well, and that's simply unnecessary." - Paul added.

Then they all heard a grunt from the back. Gideon had his arms crossed and an annoyed look.

- "Excuse me, but as far as I know, you all are strangers to Belham and me. Why should we trust
you?"- Gideon suddenly demanded, and Belham turned his eyes to the group as well.

- "Did you wish to remain imprisoned?" - Anwar asked, a little outraged.

- "Don't take me as ungrateful. I'm just being logical. Things have been rough." - Gideon cleared
up, raising his hand in a gesture of peace.

Belham only contemplated his mate whenever he spoke, and the other demons with their responses.

The rest of the group just had mixed feelings.

- "I understand. Under other circumstances, none of us might be working together, but our world is-" -

- "I know the current situation very closely. That still doesn't answer my question." -

Hoyt began to explain, but he was interrupted by an irritated Gideon.

- "If betrayal is what you're worried about, you don't need to worry about us. Will you join us?" -
Hoyt spoke firmly and intently.

 There was a pregnant pause.

- "Eh...hmmm..." -

Gideon took that moment to look up at Belham thoughtfully. They looked into each other, seemingly
sharing an unspoken conversation.

After a brief moment, they turn to look at Hoyt.

- "It'd be unwise to take a decision without knowing what your intentions are." - He said sternly.

- "If we are to recruit outsiders, we need to rethink some things. Like it or not, most of us are
helping because you already are our leader, Hoyt. But these demons, they have no obligation with us,
not even if we saved them." - Apollo pointed out to Hoyt.

- \*sigh\* ... "I know, Apollo" - Hoyt agreed, reflecting on what has been said, then he proceeded to
inform the pair.

- "We are trying to restore what we can of our world. Us being here was no coincidence, since doctor
Oscar was captured and brought here." - Paul said.

- "Ah. The fact that even we know that name of a human still manages to astound me... A mere human.
And you came here to rescue him?" - Gideon seemed to loosen up, and so did Belham, almost in unison.

Belham was yet to speak to the other demons. Awkward glances were shared, but Gideon seemed to talk
for them both.

- "Yes. He was unharmed, thankfully." -

- "We'll help. not sure if we'll stick for long, but Belham thinks that we can provide an important
hand." - Gideon finally said with a smirk.

\*\*\*

One part of the group headed towards the direction they had used to enter, the others used the west
door of the testing chamber. That left Raiko, Anshel, Jason, Boto, Sebastian, Xeno, Gale and Maseng
to stick with the doctor and search another part of the structure. They had taken the eastern door
of the testing chamber, which ultimately led them through solitary hallways and steps into the second
floor of the complex.

- "Fabien is a brilliant man. I mean, most of what you see around was designed by him." - Oscar
commented in partial admiration.

- "Where do you think he'll be going now?" - Xeno asked the doctor.

- "He was highly funded. Surely he must have a few other facilities. For all we know, this one
might be the smallest." - Oscar replied with concern.

 - "Very well. This is a matter that has to be discussed patiently." - Xeno concluded.

- "If this is not only one, that means that the guy who captured the doc may have more of us captured
in those other places?" - Boto wondered worryingly.

- "That's basically it. Not a good thing." - Jason confirmed with a sigh.

...

The third group continued across the second floor of the facility, along bunker-like hallways. A few
minutes into the scouring, they enter an expanse storage room. Nothing about the barely lit area was
pleasant. Boxes and scrapped gadgets of all sizes littered the view. They individually scanned the
room, producing a variety of reactions.

- "You're not gonna take any data or tool Fabien left here to help your own research, doc?" -
Sebastian asked.

- "No, even as tempted as I am. I can't. It's not just my own pride as a researcher, I think it
would be erroneous, overall." - The doctor replied with a tinge of sadness.

- "It's understandable doctor- wait..." -

Xeno stopped midsentence, something had picked his attention.

- "What is it? - Anshel asked seeing Xeno's reaction.

- "There's someone else here." - The werewolf said as he ordered the demon party to stop.

He turned about face, and in one swift fluid motion he pulls an inopportune human from the darkness,
apparently a guard. The man was hung upside down by his right leg.

- "Why are you still here?" - Xeno growled with his given werewolf ferocity

- "It's my job, man- er, wolf! What do you want me to say?! - The man truly seemed afraid of the
towering wolf.

- "How many demons were they keeping in this facility?" -

- "There were only three available this month, I swear. The big boss wanted to keep work light,
don't ask me why. Please put me down!" - The man took off his helmet and terror was clearly drawn on
his face.

- "I'm not going to hurt you, fool. How did you get left behind? All the other employees seemed to
abandon this place with great haste." -

- "They did? Goddamn it! Just please! Let go of me!" - The man shouted his plea, and Xeno
conceded.

The man fell on his back, and after a brief complaint of pain, he stumbled into a sprint and fled,
only the eyes of the demons trailing him.

- "That was odd." - Jason mumbled.

- "Let's get out of here." - Xeno finally said.

\*\*\*

Rafael and I sat on the grassy edge of a dirt road that surrounded Fabien's building. The sun was
unforgiving in that tropical setting, but the energetic winds made it bareable. Five minutes after
we were outside, another part of the group exited through what appeared to be the building's front
entrance; on the northern part. I recognized no one of that group, save for Hoyt, Apollo, Rose and
Vega. I hadn't really spoken to Vega or Apollo, so they probably didn't really count.

I could breathe easy only because they are on our side.

...

- "We found two demons." - Said one of them once they approached us.

Relatively tall, good muscles, brown hair. He said his name was Anwar, if I recall the brief
introduction. He gestured with an open palm at the two that were freed: A greenish demon and a large
wingless hyper.

That was surely an official hyper, with Tobey and Bruno that made three-of-a-kind. He was taller
than Tobey but not as much as Bruno. And he had a very gentle look, unlike Tobey's happy-go-lucky
face or Gai's serious attitude. His mane and fur were colored in midtones of brown, and his eyes a
more colorful ebony.

The other greenish one had an unreadable look in his eyes, like Rude. His body was fairly muscled
like Rafa's, and he had an undeniably big tool, considering his height.

- "We have one here, but he's out cold." - Gai signaled the knocked out incubus on his shoulder.

...

- "So, you guys needed us to infiltrate the building and save the doctor?" - The ruddy demon
approached me with a question.

I looked up at him and so did Rafa. That one was Jeace... I think.

- "Ah, yes, but we took matters into our hands instead of waiting and everything went to hell. But
everything might have gone to hell anyway." - I replied as I stood to better face him.

- "Maybe. Murphy's law." - he shrugged.

 - "Huh?" - I didn't really get the reference...

Murphy's law.

- "Only Loren and boss Paul can cosplay -I mean shapeshift, so maybe that wasn't any better. We had
three more shifters; but we lost one a long time ago, and the other two were moles." - Jeace added.
- "Five shifters... a family of them?" - I asked.

- "Something like that." -

...

Fifteen more minutes and the whole group was assembled, with Oscar safe in our company and three
demons freed. From what Xeno said, a guard claimed that there were only three demons in the
building, so on that part we were good.

But we had something up for discussion:

What the hell are we going to do with the building?

- "I proposed to personally demolish the building in question, but I was unanimously denied." - Rude
said when the topic was brought.

- "Your earth powers are not polished enough." - Ari sighed.

- "An earthquake can create a lot of collateral damage. Specially in such a small island." - Hoyt
argued.

- "I can implode it... I think." - Anwar mentioned, glancing at his right fist, then at the structure
a moment.

What exactly did Anwar do again? He can blow things up?

- "Hmmm...." -

- "Maybe a combination... Sebastian, I'm going to need your help." - Hoyt declared, and Sebastian's
pointy ears perked up.

- "Ah, sure. What do you need me for?" - The wind demon replied.

- "We're going to bring this area to the ice age." - Hoyt expressed with confidence.

- "We all have to levitate a few meters into the air. The winged should help the wingless.
Sebastian, help me hover above the center of this building." - Hoyt gave his orders.

Ten members of the group needed help with levitation, and I decided help Jeace. We took off without
delay, soon hovering several dozen meters above and waiting for whatever Hoyt was going to do with
the building.

- "Remember what we did when infiltrating the castle back at the Wind Hole? Let's do the same, but
at a bigger scale." - Hoyt told Sebastian.

- "Amplify your ice energy to freeze the whole lab...? Kay then, here we go." -

The wind demon began to flap his large wings in an increasingly faster rate, while Hoyt seemed to
gather his power, holding his paws close to each other near his chest. The energy quickly accumulated
within the two, Hoyt beginning to become surrounded by a sky blue aura, and his eyes began to glow in
the same way.

 - "Argh- freaking cold!" - Sebastian winced complained, probably from how Hoyt's temperature drops
when he uses his power. Still, he held the general tightly.

- "Hold on... now!" - Hoyt commanded.

The ice demon brought his hands near his muzzle and blew, producing a rapidly expanding blue mist
that spun in a downward vortex created by Sebastian. It glimmered in the particles of ice that
reflected the light of the sun. The facility was hit with the apparent force of a hurricane,
encompassing the whole area in the powerful freezing mist.

Even at our distance, far above the phenomenon, the temperature dropped. Cracking sounds could be
faintly heard as ice quickly crystallized all around the condemned structure, and in mere minutes, it
resembled an ancient glacier.

Indeed, Hoyt's power was something to behold.

Expressions of awe echoed among us the spectators.

- "Wow. He's really something." - I muttered.

- "Now, whoever has Anwar, drop him into the building!" - Hoyt exhorted, with slight huffs from his
recovering breath.

 - "What? That's suicide!" - I quickly snapped.

- "Not with Anwar. He controls combustion... well, that's what he says. The thing is that his body
can produce explosive reactions, and it makes him immune to a ton of things." - Jeace explained to me
after an initial chuckle.

- "He's a living... bomb?" - I asked.

- "Technically. Just watch." -

It was Apollo who carried Anwar, and they floated near Hoyt and Sebastian. Anwar just seemed giddy.

- "Ready to go?" -

Apollo asked the.. explody demon?

- "Just drop me." - Anwar said in a grimace.

And so it was done, Anwar quickly dropped from the heat wielder's arms. Anwar certainly fell with
intent.

- "Gogo bunker buster!" - Anwar shouted with glee, crossing his arms over his chest and raising a
knee up in a sort of drop kick.

His extended footpaw seemed to glow orange, leaving a slight trail, just like a meteor would.

With that comet-style descent, he crashed into the frozen building, and a second later the center of
it just blows up in an explosion that appeared to take half of the facility with it. It was loud,
and shattered ice flew everywhere.

 - "Oshi... is he okay?" - I worried.

That was a huge explosion, and he was supposed to be perfectly fine after it?

- "Sure he is." - Jeace said with confidence.

- "Sebastian, go get Anwar." - Hoyt told his carrier.

- "Ah, but..." -

- "I'll carry him for ya." - Apollo told the wind demon.

- "Okay, then." -

As Hoyt switched partners, parts of the facility crumbled and collapsed.

It had a huge gaping hole in the middle and the surrounding structure was brittle and frozen, after
all.

- "Whoah!" - Sebastian said, then he quickly shifted into a high speed dive upon seeing the building
crumble the way it did.

Sebs reaches ground zero in less than minute, thanks to his wind assistance.

- "Anwar, you okay?!" -

The wind demon called, and a sudden explosion is the response, albeit a much smaller one.

- "Hey there." - At the epicenter was Anwar with a wide grin and arms raised.

- "I... see you are." - Sebastian said with relief.

With the explosive demon in arms, the wind demon quickly ascended to the same altitude as the others.

 ...

- "That was very effective." - Commented Apollo, and Anwar showed everyone a thumbs up.

- "I could've done something like that." - Rude muttered.

- "Don't you realize that you might have harmed the innocent people in the nearby city? Or maybe
created a tsunami?" - Ari scolded.

- "Hmmph." - Rude just grunted.

- "Now that that's taken care of, what's the next course of action?" - Paul asked Hoyt.

- "Well, Xeno had mentioned that Oscar's son was in one of Fabien's houses." - Hoyt replied.

- "What?!" - Yun was the first to react, jostling a bit under Jason's grasp.

We all reacted similarly.

First Oscar and now his son?

- "How?!" -

- "Oh... must've been his friend." - Oscar mentioned, looking thoughtful and worried.

- "Doctor... what do you mean?" -

- "When I built my lab, the underground facility where you all stay, I made sure that it was
undetectable and impenetrable. I succeeded in getting a close approximation, as dated tests had shown
me. Carl was not kidnapped. A friend of his must've invited him over, and that must be Fabien's
son. Only... that I hadn't known that fact before." - Oscar explained, he seemed uneasy.

 - "So he's safe?" - Jason asked.

- "The lad... John, he's a well mannered boy, and they have stayed over at his house before. I'm
only unsettled because I missed that fact. He's been staying over at Fabien's all those times...?" -

- "DO we need to get Carl? I mean, if you say he's fine..." - I commented.

Oscar was anxious, but not worried. I thought we could breathe a little easier.

- "Let's find some place to land." - Oscar asked

...

We landed on a beach a mile or two from the remains of Fabien's lab.

Sincerely, I wanted to rest. And what's more, I needed sex with my angel. But alas, a more
important situation presented itself. What was on Oscar's mind?

- "Raiko, could you charge this for me? A little jolt will do." - Oscar asked the thunder demon,
handing over a familiar little handheld device.

I think it was called a cellphone.

Raiko looked at it puzzlingly for a moment, then he complied to the man's request.

A quick flash of yellow lightning envelops Raiko's hands.

 - "There you go." - Raiko handed back the device.

- "I'm going to call my son. Fabien's lab had a signal blocking unit, so there was no way I was
going to communicate. Plus, my phone died. These are convenient little things when they are
actually charged." - The doctor mentioned as he typed on the phone and held it to his ear.

A faint ringing buzzed from the phone.

- "Hello?" -

- "Dad? Holy- dad! You're okay! I got so worried when you were kidnapped... but the guys quickly
went after you. They're awesome." -

- "I know, son. Tell me, where are you?" -

- "Oh, I'm at John's house. I told them you were out on an extended business trip so no one would
worry.... But I was really worried, dad." -

- "I'm glad you're fine too, Carl. I was worried sick about you. I guess it was good for you
to stay over there." -

- "Yeah. I'll tell them that you're back. They'll take me there in a few hours." -

- "That sounds good. I'll see you soon." -

Their conversation was pretty clear to our sensitive ears. Carl clearly was fine and with people he
knew, so he appeared to be in no danger. But if his friend is really Fabien's son...

 What does that imply?

- "Whew." - Rafael sighed beside me, hugging my side.

- "Carl's ok, at least." - I murmured.

- "And Yun's relieved." - I added after glancing at the warrior.

- "So, we don't need to go on another rescue mission. Can we finally go home?" - Boto groaned.

- "Home... with all these guests?" - Oscar wondered.

Paul, Hennessy, Loren, Anwar, Jeace, Gideon, Belham.... even Apollo, Vega and Anshel, and Gideon and
Belham. None of them were at the underground base before. The doc had already some expansion when
Hoyt's crew came in...

- "Ah... we'll work something out. Understand, I'm not opposed. The more the merrier. I'm sure
we'll get all of you to fit inside." - Oscar assured.

...

- "Hey... umm... can I try something?" - Hayden asked the group, even raising his hand shyly.

- "What might that be?" -

- "I'd like to warp us back home. I mean, Xeno convinced me that I can travel across dimensions, and
I managed to pull Paul's squad here. Maybe I can take us all home." -

 - "Are you sure you can do it? I mean, I couldn't have accessed the portals Fabien had, since they
are designed differently..." - Oscar commented.

- "Yes... just stand together." -

Hayden faced the direction in which apparently was the base, then he concentrated all his energy, even
humming as he flowed into a trance.

It was pretty amazing and scary at the same time to see Hayden's to become completely black, as if it
was just shadows...

Then he brings both arms forward, and all that dark energy is released from him, conjuring a portal a
few meters in front of him. The swirling gate of darkness quickly expanded, and it seemed to block
out the light of the sun.

- "Whoah..." -

Hayden was released from his trance, and he kneeled and huffed. Gai swiftly bent to help him.

- "This... \*huff\* ...should take us home." - Hayden faced us with a smile.

We all stepped forward into the dark gate.

The familiar feeling of curtain smoke wrapped us as we moved past the boundary. Along with the warm
feeling that one gets when you return home.
