#41 of Special Assignments

A little something to wrap this series up.
Thank you to everyone who read, rated and commented on it. You were a great source of encouragement for me to continue.

"So, I remember coming to this beach for an evening swim to celebrate completing my parachute training. I'd never been to Cyprus before so I drove around until I found a beautiful but empty beach."

"It's a pretty neat spot to celebrate," I replied, wagging my tail.

"Indeed, so I thought it seemed appropriate for a post-graduation escape," Lachlan grinned. "And a discussion."

"A discussion?" I repeated. "Please don't say it's another bad announcement!"

"Not at all," Lachlan laughed. "I've had enough of those. It's an idea you might quite like."

We were walking down a deserted stretch of beach together, paw in paw. The water was sparkling in the sun and lapping gently at the sand. Lachlan gave my paw a squeeze and led me to the water's edge.

It felt cool against my feet, but it didn't matter. Lachlan was holding me and that took any concerns I had away. He was once again wearing his black speedos. I allowed myself to pause and admire the sight of him in them; the way they emphasised his butt and the contour of what lay underneath the material at the front. I was wearing my pair of swim briefs too and I couldn't help but grin as I thought back to our trip to Italy.

_Three years ago, yet it feels only like yesterday._

"Shall we go for a swim before the sun sets?" Lachlan suggested.

"Won't it be cold?" I asked.

"Trust me, at this time of year the sea on this beach will be warmer than the lake in Italy," he chuckled.

He clasped my paw tightly and we waded out into the ocean.

Thankfully Lachlan was right, the water was by no means bath temperature, but it wasn't unbearably cold. He gave my paw a reassuring squeeze before launching into a powerful front crawl. I swam along behind him. In Italy my swimming hadn't been quite as graceful, but this time I launched myself into it and swam confidently behind Lachlan.

Through the water I could just make out his butt flex and his muscles ripple as he swam along.

"How do you feel?" he panted as he paused to touch the bottom.

"Good," I replied. "I could use a drink though."

"Well, we have just that," Lachlan grinned. We waded back to the sand and made our way to where we had left our towels. Lachlan had brought along a cooler box and I wagged my tail as he prized the lid off. "So, I've got beer, lemonade, cider."

            "I'll take a cider," I replied.

Lachlan reached into the box and handed me one before bending down to get himself a drink. I couldn't help but notice how more defined his butt was now that his speedo was wet. He raised his tail slightly and glanced over his shoulder to fix me a grin before handing me a bottle opener. I opened my beer before cracking the lid of his.

            "Thanks darling," he grinned.

            "No problem."

"So, the thing I wanted to discuss with you," Lachlan said, taking a sip from his bottle. "I'm in need of an assistant for my research projects, and I think I have just the person in mind."

I didn't need to ask who he was thinking of. His smile told me all I needed to know.

I sat down on my towel as Lachlan reclined next to me. He reached for his sunglasses, but his eyes caught mine and he smiled. I sat still and didn't say anything, I just wanted to admire the sight of his amber eyes sparkling in the sunlight.

"You are the most beautiful person I ever set eyes on," I said.

Three years ago I probably would have worried and cringed right after making such a comment, but I no longer cared. Lachlan leaned over and kissed me on my muzzle.

"I think the same about you, my dear Shep."

Above the sun was starting to get low in the sky and the evening light was reflected in the water.

"I know a good place in a nearby town if you want to get something tasty for dinner?" Lachlan suggested. "Or we could make something at home?"

"Hmm, eating out could be fun, but I feel like having a nice dinner at home, just the two of us."

"Good answer," Lachlan replied.

My tail was thumping against my towel and I realised Lachlan's was doing the same. He smiled before reaching out with his cider bottle to gently clink it against mine.

"To the future?" I asked, trying to pre-empt the toast.

            "To _our_ future."

- _The End_
