Sure, I  \ncan tell you that.\u0026nbsp; Ever since my Change at age 16, I've been one,  \nand I don't think I'd choose anything else, even if I had the option,  \nlooking back.  \n  \nThe first thing you're going to notice as any bird of prey is the  \nvision.\u0026nbsp; Dear god, the vision.\u0026nbsp; I've no personal experience, but  \nI've heard it compared to putting glasses on for the first time after  \nbeing nearsighted your whole life.\u0026nbsp; Everything snaps into focus  \nclearly, and you can see at about 2-3 times the detail at the same  \ndistance.\u0026nbsp; You'll never have to worry about fine print being  \nillegible again.\u0026nbsp; This isn't always good, mind you, particularly for  \nthings that look unappetizing even as a human, like acne, or if you  \nsuffer from Trypophobia.\u0026nbsp; But in general in our sight-oriented world,  \nits a huge boost.\u0026nbsp; Raptors also have striated pupils, which means you  \ncan control the shape of the lens in your eye on a subconscious level,  \nallowing rapidly changing focus.\u0026nbsp; Additionally, you might, depending  \non the specifics of your change, end up a tetrachromat, meaning you'll  \nbe able to see somewhat into the UV spectrum.\u0026nbsp; I didn't get this  \nmyself, so I can't speak about it with authority, but it's said that  \nits real trippy if you do.\u0026nbsp; Raptors also are more motion-sensitive  \nthan humans, which means you may focus quickly on sudden movements at  \nfirst, and have your attention snap to them.\u0026nbsp; Related to this, TV  \nwill be different; raptor eyes 'see' more 'images' per second than  \nhuman, so the threshold for smooth animation motion is higher.\u0026nbsp; Since  \nnew laws require TVs and monitors to be compatible, it's not as big a  \nproblem as it once was, but when watching older shows, you might  \nnotice it seems 'choppier', like an old-time Flash animation.\u0026nbsp;  \n  \n\n\u0026nbsp; The second thing will be the hearing, particularly if you're ending up  \nas an owl.\u0026nbsp; I heard once that barn owls can hunt by hearing alone.\u0026nbsp;  \nNow I wouldn't advise doing that, but the hearing of any raptor is up  \nthere with their sight as a major advantage... or it would be, if  \nhuman society wasn't just so loud!\u0026nbsp; The first few weeks you'll  \nprobably get some sensory overload from all the sounds you're going to  \nsuddenly be hearing that weren't in range of your human hearing.\u0026nbsp;  \nParticularly annoying are things with a high pitch you might now be  \nable to hear, like some motors and engines.\u0026nbsp; Fluorescent lighting  \nisn't great either for that.\u0026nbsp; On the plus side, once you get the hang  \nof it, you can hear with a lot of clarity, even at some distance.\u0026nbsp;  \nAnd again, owls?\u0026nbsp; You might have your ears being not symmetrical,  \nwhich means you can triangulate a sound's location just by listening  \nand twisting your head.  \n  \nSpeaking of moving your head, your eyes probably can't move much in  \ntheir sockets anymore, so you'll be doing a lot of head turning to see  \neverything around you.\u0026nbsp; Your field of vision is wide, but the  \nbinocular vision is where you really want to focus.\u0026nbsp; So get used to  \nmoving your head.\u0026nbsp; Birds-morphs have more neck vertebrae, so you can  \nprobably do at least a 180 on your neck without much trouble.  \n  \n\n\u0026nbsp; Now, so far I've covered mostly sensory upsides, but there are some  \ndownsides too.\u0026nbsp; Your sense of touch WILL be reduced by the scales on  \nyour hands, and you simply won't have the same degree of tactile  \nsensation.\u0026nbsp; It's not like you can't tell hot, or cold, or rough vs  \nsoft, but you'll quickly notice that the finer details of sensation  \nmight be lost.\u0026nbsp; Some things are going to feel more the same than they  \nused to, simply because you don't have the ability to differentiate  \nanymore.\u0026nbsp; Braille dots from pre-Change days in particular are almost  \ninsensate to me, though that hardly matters in my case since I'm not  \nblind and I can't read Braille.  \n  \nTaste and smell are also going to be reduced.\u0026nbsp; Smell is really almost  \nnonexistant, except for particularly strong scents.\u0026nbsp; This is not  \nnecessarily as nice as it sounds, since you can't 'stop and smell the  \nroses', among other things.\u0026nbsp; Your brain simply isn't wired for  \ndeciphering that kind of input.\u0026nbsp; Taste is also different, and the  \nsensory palette is reduced, again to stronger tastes, or meat like  \nsubstances.\u0026nbsp; You'd think that this would be good, since you wouldn't  \nbe able to tell the difference between real and substitute meat, but  \ntrust me... you'll still be able to, and the latter still is  \ncomparatively terrible.  \n  \n\n\u0026nbsp; Speaking of food, eating with a beak is different.\u0026nbsp; A lot of what you  \neat will need to be swallowed whole or in chunks.\u0026nbsp; Water or other  \nliquids will need to be poured straight down the throat, or into the  \nlower mandible and then 'tipped' back down your throat.\u0026nbsp; \u0026nbsp;You'll get  \nused to it after a bit, but swishing liquid will be a thing of the  \npast.\u0026nbsp; Beaks constantly grow, and unlike wild hawks, you probably  \nwon't wear yours down by hunting.\u0026nbsp; Instead you'll need to \"cope\", or  \nfile, the beak down a bit so that it doesn't become too long.\u0026nbsp; This  \nisn't painful; it's mostly dead tissue, but it can be time  \nconsuming.\u0026nbsp; You won't get cavities because of this, at least not  \npermanent ones, but you'll still have to brush; nobody likes bad  \nbreath.  \n  \nNutritionally, expect a heavy helping of meat in your diet, and unless  \nyou're very well off, a lot of it will be substitute.\u0026nbsp; Depending on  \nyour degree, you may also need to add feathers, bone meal, or other  \ninedible material.\u0026nbsp; Hawks and raptors cast, or regurgitate, pellets,  \nand this is essential for proper digestion in higher degree  \nindividuals.\u0026nbsp; Milk and dairy may be off the menu entirely.\u0026nbsp; Liquid  \nintake may be decreased, as birds reprocess a much greater degree of  \nwater through their bodies in order to decrease dead liquid weight.\u0026nbsp;  \nThere are some supplements claiming to make your food more palatable,  \nbut I've rarely used them.\u0026nbsp; They don't pack enough punch, for me.\u0026nbsp;  \nAnd bad news if you like spicy peppers... if you're high degree, you  \nprobably won't be able to taste them anymore.\u0026nbsp; Avian biochemistry  \nhandles capsaicin as a mild analgesic, or painkiller, because it helps  \nbirds spread the seeds.\u0026nbsp; Long story short, if you like spicy food,  \nhope you're low degree.  \n  \n\n\u0026nbsp; The most obvious feature of a bird is the feathers, and trust me,  \nyou'll be covered in them.\u0026nbsp; They're warm, but they also preclude  \nsweating for most morphs, so expect to get hot if you exert  \nsubstantially.\u0026nbsp; Your main method of dispersing heat is panting.\u0026nbsp;  \nFeathers themselves hold a LOT of water if they get wet, so your  \nbathing habits might change unless you continue sweating.\u0026nbsp; They're  \nalso great for self expression, in more than one way.\u0026nbsp; Your feathers  \nwill react unconsciously to your moods and emotions, changing  \nposture.\u0026nbsp; This can take time for others to learn to read, but it'll  \ncome with time.\u0026nbsp; It's your main method of emoting, really.\u0026nbsp;  \nAdditionally, unless your feathers are already dark, they can hold  \ncolors and dyes and be used for some fairly significant  \nself-expression.\u0026nbsp; The downside to all of this is molting.\u0026nbsp; Depending  \non your species, you'll shed and replace all your feathers on a  \npredictable cycle, usually once a year, over several weeks or  \nmonths.\u0026nbsp; Get a good vacuum unless you're planning to make pillows,  \nbecause regular birds have THOUSANDS of feathers and you're way  \nlarger.\u0026nbsp; Molting is itchy and a mess and just generally unpleasant,  \nbut since feathers don't naturally heal, that's the only way damage is  \nrepaired is by growing new ones.  \n  \n\n\u0026nbsp; Since we're talking feathers, the longest ones will be on your wings  \nand tail.\u0026nbsp; Unless you're low degree, you'll probably end up with  \neither wings on your back, angel style, or with wings fused with your  \narms.\u0026nbsp; Both have unique ergonomic challenges, but in general, you're  \ngoing to occupy more space than an equivalent humanoid.\u0026nbsp; WIngarms,  \nlike I have, are like having drapes constantly attached to your arms  \nfrom the armpit up to the elbow or wrist, and can make a lot of things  \ndifficult, such as reaching behind cabinets or into smaller areas.\u0026nbsp; I  \nhad to rearrange my living space after I changed, and the general idea  \nof larger spaces, and plenty of gap room to reach behind or between  \nthings remains, as well as not having a lot of easily-knocked-over  \nloose objects.\u0026nbsp; Keyboards and desks became a problem, too.\u0026nbsp;  \nMeanwhile, my beautiful wife Cassandra has back wings, and she has to  \nbe more careful where she turns around, and keep better track of her  \npersonal surroundings.  \n  \nSkeletally, your bones aren't any weaker than normal; this is a  \nmisconception.\u0026nbsp; Bird bones are actually stronger than equivalent  \nsized mammals in normal animals.\u0026nbsp; What your bones ARE, is hollow with  \ndozens or hundreds of cross-bracing support struts inside of them to  \nsave weight while maintaining strength.\u0026nbsp; This means that if you are  \ninjured, the possibility of a complex fracture is higher, and medical  \nattention is more urgent.\u0026nbsp; But you're not going to have to walk  \naround like you'll get a broken bone easily like they portray in  \nmovies.\u0026nbsp; Additionally, if higher degree, your sternum becomes your  \nkeel, which is used to maintain stability and body shape during  \nflight.\u0026nbsp; Chest flexibility may be reduced because of this.  \n  \n\n\u0026nbsp; Instincts, you're probably going to develop a bit of claustrophobia,  \nat least of some type.\u0026nbsp; It's entirely natural and expected for most  \nbird species.\u0026nbsp; Conversely, you might feel more comfortable in more  \nopen areas.\u0026nbsp; I find archways and such other architectural tricks help  \nfor this.\u0026nbsp; You'll also probably preen when nervous, fluff your  \nfeathers when threatened or scared.\u0026nbsp; I already mentioned the movement  \nfocus.\u0026nbsp; You may also like windy weather, or just generally feel more  \ncomfortable outdoors or at height.  \n  \nAvian lungs are circulatory, which means that unlike the 'bellows'  \nlungs employed by mammals, fresh air is constantly flowing through  \nthem, both as you inhale and exhale, in a complex pattern.\u0026nbsp; Look it  \nup if you want, but your stamina will be increased because you'll be  \nexchanging oxygen for carbon dioxide more efficiently and at a higher  \npercentage.\u0026nbsp; This isn't all good, however; impurities in the air will  \naffect you faster, and you can't use standard mammal rebreather  \nsystems that rely on filtering out carbon dioxide.\u0026nbsp; If you have the  \nmoney and you work in an area where it might be a concern, get a  \nparticulate and toxin sensor and keep it on you.\u0026nbsp; I understand some  \nflight computers even have them built in these days on the high end.  \n  \n\n\u0026nbsp; Past that, speaking might take some getting used to.\u0026nbsp; You no longer  \nhave lips to use to help form words, so you need to form all the sound  \nin your throat, sometimes using the tongue for help.\u0026nbsp; I wouldn't  \nexpect to master it right away, but eventually it'll become second  \nnature.\u0026nbsp; An important detail: Just because you don't need to move  \nyour beak to make sound doesn't mean you shouldn't.\u0026nbsp; Its unnerving to  \nwatch, even for me, when someone speaks without motion.\u0026nbsp; Since the  \nbeak needs to be open anyways for the sound, try to make it a bit of a  \nhabit to move it, at least a bit.\u0026nbsp; This might be reflexive initially  \nfor some of you, and the goal should be to make it reflexive if it  \nisn't.  \n  \nClothing's an interesting topic.\u0026nbsp; You don't have much in the way of  \nanything you need to cover in most cases, so if you're higher degree,  \nyou may find that your clothing styles will shift more towards display  \nand formality when appropriate, and more utility at all other times.\u0026nbsp;  \nI generally have a flight pack or something else to carry gear and  \npersonal possessions in, because carrying everything in your hands is  \nfor suckers.\u0026nbsp; Messenger bags or backpacks can work as well if you  \nkeep the straps tight.\u0026nbsp; For more formal wear, sashes or other smaller  \nthings are preferred, instead of a full on suit.\u0026nbsp; The material will  \ndepend on your personal preference, but I find higher thread counts  \ndon't catch on feathers as much and are much nicer to wear.\u0026nbsp; Make  \nsure if you're a Norm Shifter that you consider shift-friendly  \nclothing.  \n  \n\n\u0026nbsp; Your feet are probably splayed toe murder weapons.\u0026nbsp; Get talon shields  \nfitted for your species, and use them.\u0026nbsp; Raptor feet are very quick to  \ngrasp, and have locking tendons in them that make it difficult to let  \ngo once they ratchet closed.\u0026nbsp; Now that's inconvenient in a lot of  \nsituations, but it's also assault, possibly with a deadly weapon, if  \nit happens to another person.\u0026nbsp; Better to be cautious.\u0026nbsp; There's also  \na lot of places where 'weapons', including raptor talons, are frowned  \nupon, such as in government facilities or on aircraft.\u0026nbsp; Shields also  \nhelp keep your talons from catching on carpeting, and believe me,  \nthere's a lot of old carpeting that isn't designed for claws and  \ntalons.\u0026nbsp; You may also want to get the padding option.\u0026nbsp; Your feet are  \ntough enough to walk barefoot on many surfaces, but hot concrete or  \nasphalt is NOT one of them.\u0026nbsp; And it's just more comfortable in  \ngeneral.\u0026nbsp; Your feet also have some limited manual dexterity, and you  \ncan use one as a third 'hand' to hold things.\u0026nbsp; Don't expect a great  \ndeal of fine manipulation, but if you're working with tools, it's an  \noption.  \n  \n\n\u0026nbsp; In terms of actual personal protective equipment, if you're in a job  \nthat requires it, steel toed boots exist for birds, though they're not  \nat all pleasant given how wide your toes are spread apart or how much  \nthey like to realign.\u0026nbsp; You can get positive pressure masks or nare  \nplugs, that provide a steady stream of oxygen or filtration from  \ntoxins.\u0026nbsp; All of this rings up to be fairly expensive, though.\u0026nbsp; If  \nyou're working in a even more hazardous environment, you might need to  \nget a suit that covers you entirely, feathers and all.\u0026nbsp; I don't know  \nmany birds that like to work in these conditions, but I'm sure there's  \ngotta be some, right?  \n  \nIf you're interested in Powers, the most common one is Norm Shift or  \nFlighted.\u0026nbsp; Past that there's a lot of genetic lottery involved and I  \ndon't have the numbers in front of me to make a lot of  \ngeneralizations, but a few powers that are anecdotally more common in  \nmy experience are Telekinesis and Desolidification, but there are many  \nothers.\u0026nbsp; Movement related powers also seem common, like  \nteleportation, or speed.\u0026nbsp; And of course, microscopic high detail  \nvision is pretty common, though the ability to magnify in like a pair  \nof binoculars is less so.  \n  \n\n\u0026nbsp; Predator/Prey relations is a tricky one, since most raptors, while  \nfairly high up the food chains they're in, are not always apex  \npredators, and they're definitely not what somebody THINKS of when  \nthey think of an apex or super predator.\u0026nbsp; What this means in  \npractical terms is you've gotta learn how not to bully other morphs of  \nspecies that're smaller or more vulnerable, while also not making  \nyourself look weak if someone bigger is jockeying with you.\u0026nbsp; It's a  \ncrummy game, and being caught in the middle of it is honestly one of  \nthe things I like least about the whole experience.\u0026nbsp; The best hints  \nI've got to something that's obviously extremely subjective to people  \nis to not flare your feathers, don't stare, and if you can, try to  \nmove your beak when you talk.\u0026nbsp; That takes a lot of practice, but it  \nreduces what some people find extremely unnerving about us.\u0026nbsp; Beyond  \nthat, try to be mindful of your general posture and where your talons  \nare.\u0026nbsp; And no sudden movements if you can avoid it.  \n  \nAnd finally, we'll cover flight and, if necessary, flight computers.\u0026nbsp;  \nThe first thing about flight is, while you're learning, expect to get  \ndinged up a bit.\u0026nbsp; Scratches, scrapes, bruises.\u0026nbsp; Maybe get some  \npainkillers and antiseptics before you really get started.\u0026nbsp; Now, if  \nyou're just changing, you're a teenager.\u0026nbsp; You're not invincible.\u0026nbsp;  \nTrust me... it's very tempting to imagine yourself an ace right away,  \nbut you're not.\u0026nbsp; Even real birds have to be careful about what  \nconditions they fly in, so take it slow and steady.\u0026nbsp; You'll learn,  \nyou'll improve, and you'll be safe doing it.\u0026nbsp; If you're a flight  \ncapable anthro, you have to register with the FAA.\u0026nbsp; There are  \ndifferent zones we're allowed to fly in, depending on how far we're  \ntraveling.\u0026nbsp; Try to stay in the right zones either way, but it's way  \neasier with a flight computer, which I'll get to in a moment.\u0026nbsp; Watch  \nout for other fliers and keep a respectful distance, unless you're  \nkettling, that is, using the same thermal to ride up.\u0026nbsp;  \n  \n\n\u0026nbsp; Thermals are columns of rising hot air, and they're the best way to  \nget altitude in a hurry.\u0026nbsp; Most birds of prey can't flap for extended  \nperiods, relying instead on updrafts and thermals to carry them  \nhigher.\u0026nbsp; Once they're at height, they spread their wings out and  \nglide, or cruise, and this is how they travel long distances, say,  \nduring migration.\u0026nbsp; You can use the same trick, though you'll need to  \nfind a larger thermal to circle in.\u0026nbsp; The best places I've found are  \ngenerally commercial zones, since they tend to have larger parking  \nlots and paved areas that generate thermals during the day very  \nwell.\u0026nbsp; There are no-fly zones, though, and you want to learn about  \nthose from research or your flight computer.\u0026nbsp; Some people think  \nthey're there for the government to hide things, and I'm sure that's  \npart of it, but they're also present for safety.\u0026nbsp; Two common  \nrestricted flight zones that aren't associated with hiding things are  \nindustrial areas, particularly factories, and airports.\u0026nbsp; Both are  \ndangerous areas for you to fly, and you can get in a lot of trouble  \nflying into a no-fly zone, up to and including a revocation of your  \nflight certifications.\u0026nbsp; Basically, the same as someone who disobeys  \ntraffic laws gets their driver's license pulled.\u0026nbsp; And while we're on  \nthe subject of safety, your alcohol tolerance will be fairly low, so  \nif you've had even one drink, have a friend get you home.\u0026nbsp; It's  \ndifficult at best to fly when drunk anyways.  \n  \n\n\u0026nbsp; Flight computers are basically ruggedized laptops, and you can use  \nthem like that when you're on the ground, but they're also so much  \nmore.\u0026nbsp; A lot these days are barely larger than a smartphone, though  \nthey're expensive as a good one.\u0026nbsp; Absolutely get a strap for yours  \nbecause there's no way you'll find it if you drop it, if it survives  \nat all.\u0026nbsp; Aside from being a handy travel companion, it also has all  \nthe functions you'd expect for flying.\u0026nbsp; GPS, altimeter, windspeed,  \nweather.\u0026nbsp; It receives information from others to help avoid  \nincidents, though it's no substitute for using your brain and  \nsenses.\u0026nbsp; Most of them come with a headset, and I'd recommend you get  \none, because it can be tricky to use just looking at the screen.\u0026nbsp; The  \nbetter models include eyepiece HUDs or wrist-mounted displays to  \ncheck, similar to a smart watch.\u0026nbsp; Just make sure whatever you get,  \nyou're happy with it, and take good care of it.\u0026nbsp; Just because they're  \nruggedized doesn't mean they're indestructible.  \n  \nIf you're higher on the degree scale, you'll probably end up with  \nsomewhat of a forward lean.\u0026nbsp; Birds generally don't stand fully  \nupright, particularly since their tail feathers would drag on the  \nground in that position.\u0026nbsp; You probably will have a similar stance if  \nyou're having wing arms, though backwing birds seem to stand upright  \nmore easily.\u0026nbsp; Either way, you can adjust this through your legs based  \non the position you happen to be in at the time.\u0026nbsp; Your arms for  \nwingarms will may bend backwards, with your hands resting near your  \nthroat in a neutral \"folded\" position for your arms, or they may just  \nbe like 'normal' human arms.\u0026nbsp; If the former, be a little bit careful  \nwith fidgeting your hands, since they've probably got pretty nasty  \ntalons on them too.\u0026nbsp; Talons are keratin over bone and you don't want  \nto hurt them too bad either.\u0026nbsp; Bone injuries hurt.  \n  \n\n\u0026nbsp; If you swim, you might not be advised to anymore, at least not much.\u0026nbsp;  \nWhile birds of prey can swim on the surface of the water, with few  \nexceptions they're not very good at it in most cases and prefer to  \navoid it.\u0026nbsp; It takes a very long time to dry off anyways, and I'm sure  \nfeathers clog pool filters up pretty fast.\u0026nbsp; Speaking of water, birds  \ndon't sweat, so you probably won't NEED to take a shower or bath as  \noften, at least not with soap.\u0026nbsp; Still take one when you dress to  \nimpress, though.\u0026nbsp; Certain soaps have been developed, certified as  \nfeather friendly, which can be used to reduce wear on your feathers  \nand generally keep them looking nicer.\u0026nbsp; Remember your feathers are  \ndead like mammal hair and don't heal, so care is important to keep  \nthem looking nice.\u0026nbsp; Preen as necessary or get a feather comb, and  \nmake sure to spend some time at it each day.\u0026nbsp; You're not exposed to  \nthe elements as much so you won't need to spend near as much time at  \nit as an animal, but it still matters.  \n  \nIf you end up with a syrinx, you may be able to make more than one  \nsound at a time.\u0026nbsp; This obviously needs a lot of practice and  \ntraining, and since you're not a songbird or a parrot this ability is  \nmore limited.\u0026nbsp; Makes an interesting party trick if you can do it.\u0026nbsp;  \nEither way you should expect your voice to change, probably rising in  \npitch to a point or at least staying roughly the same.\u0026nbsp; If you're  \nalready a trained vocalist, you may have to relearn a lot of things.\u0026nbsp;  \nSpeaking of vocalizing, be careful using your species' natural calls;  \nfiring off a redtail shriek can be considered threatening,  \nparticularly for morphs whose base species have instinctive responses  \nto that.\u0026nbsp; Songbirds, rodents, and so on are highly attuned to the  \nsounds given by their natural predators and some people have inherited  \nthese instincts.\u0026nbsp; This ties back into the relations and general  \nsensitivity I talked about earlier.  \n  \n\n\u0026nbsp; Your beak is largely nonexpressive.\u0026nbsp; Again, it's largely dead tissue,  \nand is intended for a job you won't be doing in public.\u0026nbsp; It's got  \nsome flexibility around the edges, but your expressions will be  \ndistinctly limited.\u0026nbsp; You can open it, close it, move it from side to  \nside a bit, and use it to emphasize points, though clicking it  \nincessantly can come off as threatening, again.\u0026nbsp;  \n  \nDriving a car might be out for you depending on your degree and wing  \nstructure.\u0026nbsp;
