The characters and locations are fictionalized, and are  \npresented with changed names.**    \n  \nThe semester slowly progressed and the more time that passed, the more Val felt at home with her new  \nfriends. The last winds of summer slowly faded along with the colours of the trees. Val had fully absorbed the  \nrather eccentric gothic lifestyle. A lot of people looked at her weirdly, but she kind of liked that. It didn't bother  \nher at all. She was mostly left alone by others which was a relief for her. Her social batteries quickly drained  \nand when they were out she very much preferred solitude. During small breaks or free periods when the  \nother goths weren't around she'd often sit down under a tree in the school yard, doodling in her sketchbooks.  \nShe loved fantasy so that was usually the theme. Castles, armours, weapons, elves, dragons... she even got  \ninto calligraphy and enjoyed trying out different styles. The autumn rains didn't really bother her much until  \nthe leaves fell and no longer offered protection from the elements. Only then did she move inside.  \nHer and the other goths had - mostly thanks to Edward - found an old storage room in the school basement  \nwhere they now spent most of their free time. It was a perfect little space for them. The room itself was a  \nhuge storage room where props for the school plays and music shows were kept. Ed was a member of the  \nstage tech crew and therefore had gotten keys and access to the basement. Inside the storage room, they  \nhad gathered bookshelves, couches, armchairs and table to form a small isolated living room inside the  \nroom, lit up by small table lamps. On top of that, the basement itself was very creepy and had an eerie  \nfeeling to it. There were also rumours of a ghost haunting the long tunnels down there. This little makeshift  \nliving room became an oasis of sorts for the little group of goths. Every now and then friends of friends would  \nbe pulled along as well. Other goths or EMO's, and occasionally black metal fans who actually wore corpse  \npaint to school. They always had a very creepy vibe to them that Val was not very fond of, and after talking  \ncloser with a few of them she slowly distanced herself from them. They were just so full of hate, but not in a  \nreclusive manner but rather an extroverted hateful manner. They wanted to harm people - and animals,  \nwhich was something Val just couldn't stand for. Instead she got all the more fond of her little goth group.  \nWhen it was just them, they'd bring tea, a stereo to play music, light candles, ready books and poetry or just  \ntalk about everything and nothing. All of them had such a surprising depth to them, a depth that drew Val in.  \nBy late October she realize that she really liked them, a lot. Perhaps almost feeling some kind of love and  \naffection for them, a friendly kind of love.  \n  \n\n\u0026nbsp;One afternoon close to Halloween Val had spent almost the entire afternoon alone in their little basement  \nroom. She was working on a project for history class and was sitting alone by candlelight, a pile of books  \nfrom the library nearly a foot tall next to her on the table. \"Googling\" for information was brand new  \nphenomenon and most research for school was done through reading and indexing books on the topic. She  \nhad no idea how long she had been in there, completely absorbed into her work when keys rattled in the  \ndoor and Ed showed up in the entrance. Smart.\"  \nVal chuckled again and shook her head before looking at him.  \n\"Why would you say that?\"  \nBut her smile soon froze as she saw how serious he was looking at her.  \n\"No, I mean it.\" He nodded. \"I think you're one of the brightest in our group. Bit of a slow reader perhaps, but  \nthat has nothing to do with it. You can keep so many thoughts in your head at the same time that its scary.  \nYou should look for a future job in administration.\"  \nVal blinked at him, not sure what to say. Ed just smiled at her.  \n\"Sorry, am I being too much?\"  \n\"No, not really. Just... never thought of that I guess.\"  \nVal sighed, shuffled to the side and laid down, aiming to put her head in Ed's lap.
