The magic fighters had lived out the rest of high school knowing fully well they failed in the last boss fight and could not "save the world" as they desperately wanted to. For them everyone around them was miserable, tired, angry and exhausted all the time while they felt like the sore thumb as they were moderately okay compared to everyone else's friends and family around them.
