Were gonna need to start closing the rest of her up fast” says Eve

>”Mother….” You hear Tyler whine

>A large figure stands at the end of your feet and looms over you, blocking out the cutting sun rays from your face

>”Darling…are you ok?”

“Yeah….for now…”

>”What?”

“Nothing….”

>Dee just stares down at you with her arms crossed for a second before leaning down and offering you a hand

>”Come on darling….at least come inside and out of the sun” said Dee with a stiff smile

>Your mind flitters with images from just moments ago

>You see Dee cradling Angel’s body in her arms as she whales up towards the ceiling in a fit of loss that struck her heart twice in less than a day

>Your mind settles back to the present as you stare up at Dee’s face

> You can already tell that much of the glow that pervaded the creases in her smile is gone. The overwhelming warmth that the hyena always emanated, now hollow

>Dee was not Dee anymore, her face a ghost of before

>”Darling?” said the stretched smile

>You give a strained smile back through the wall of pain as you grab her paw

>The immense hyena gives your hand an effortless tug, bringing you straight up to your feet

>You catch a glance of the twins and eve, through the doorway, huddled around a broken Riley lying motionless on the floor

>Behind them you see Angel’s body lying down in a puddle of clotting blood, a Sisters jacket laid over her face and upper torso

>You squint up at Dee’s face, one hand shading your eyes and the other cradling your ribs, “We have to bury her Dee. I am not just gonna leave her for the damn feral coyotes or Bastards to mutilate”

>Dee looks distant while staring you in the face, Dee’s mind in another realm, one still with Angel and Mace

>You remember that stare, the stare of a war veteran

>You snap your fingers in front of Dee’s face

>Nothing

“DEE!” you say clapping your hands an inch away from her snout

>Dee flinches and brings her eyes back to you, “Bury her…..yes….Just gimme another couple minutes with her darling…then…….then we’ll bury her….”

>Dee rubs her tired eyes as you hobble over to her, “Go and take care of the Twins, I’ll watch the road for Delilah”

>”Yes…thank you darling….” Says Dee again, mind in a different world

>You put an arm around the hyena’s waist and guide her slowly back into the station

>You hobble over to Riley on the floor surrounded by the twins and Eve

>All three of the hyenas are completely disheveled, as if a tornado had ripped through the station, their clothes a mess and their fur spattered with bits of metal and blood

>Eve looks as if she aged a couple years, directing the twins in a flat tone through her tired, hollow, eyes, “Ok….very good Tinker….now for the other wound….”

>Both the twin’s eyes are still wet with tears as they both sniffle quietly to themselves, preforming Eve’s commands in a very distant and mechanical manner

>You walk back towards the front of the gas station and bend down to pick Mace’s M-16 out of a stale puddle of blood and gravel dust

>You check the magazine, one side completely coated in Riley’s clotted blood

\\*”Three-fourths left”

>You slam the magazine back into the rifle and sling the gun over your shoulder

>You limp past Dee as she lays on the ground next to Angel, whispering goodbyes into the dead body’s ear

>You sigh, walking out into the morning sun once again, the parking lot strewn with body parts, flies and small wicking oil flames

>You walk over to the edge of the gas pumps and pull up a bullet hole- riddled steel bucket to sit on

>You rest the rifle butt first on the ground between your feet, barrel aimed up at the bottom of your sweaty chin

>You look at the unmoving bodies and fresh organs of the Bastards strewn across the highway, the total mess you and Dee made shining with pride in the morning glow

> Dozens of non-sentient vultures fight over the scraps around the station and highway

>You begin to hear thousands of sharp, high pitched, cries as a large black cloud pours over the horizon from the east

>Vultures, thousands of them

>You see the vultures around you take off and join the plague in the sky as the air is filled with the bickering of thousands of large birds

>You watch as the plague floats overhead towards the West and out of sight, once again leaving you in a quiet air of dead bodies and bloated flies

>You sit back, spacing out into the tip of Mace’s rifle

>Another gust of air kicks up, scattering the flies into the wind like a reverse black blizzard

>You hear the high-pitched whine of a small motorcycle coming from the West

>You look up from the barrel to see a dark figure riding a small, black café racer over the horizon

>Strapped to the back of the motorcycle is a zig-zagging tower of red gasoline jugs

>You stand up and wave to Delilah as her motorcycle comes within distance

>The motorcycle abruptly slows down as Delilah cautiously swerves around the gore and metal spilled over the road way

>You see the hooded robe glance over at you and then towards the station

>The motorcycle slows down even more as it pulls into the blood and bullet casing filled parking lot

>You walk up to Delilah as she quickly kicks the stand down and climbs off the bike

“Delilah…” you say, unsure of where to really begin

>”Where are the rest…. Where’s Riley?” asked the hooded figure in a voice like feeble wind flowing through dried straw

>A faint cry goes up from the station

>Delilah runs past you and through the gas stations front doorway

>You lean your rifle against the side of Delilah’s bike as you unravel the rope on the gas canisters

>You pull a canister off the top and head over to the first bike

>You take the gas cap off and begin filling gas into the dry tank

>An eerie dry howl goes up from the station as you stop fueling the tank and take a step back

>You run your fingers over the small, white, hand painted runes on the bike’s gas tank

>You screw the cap back on the tank and hobble over to the next bike

>The dry morning wind whips through your hair as you wrap your arms firmly around Dee

>Your bruised and broken ribs now just a scream in the background after a couple rounds of painkillers from Eve’s medicine bag

>The original formation of seven motorcycles now down to four, Dee with you on her bike, Tinker with Eve on Eve’s bike, Tyler with a slumped Riley in the sidecar of the Twin’s bike, and Delilah alone on her own bike

>All seven of you off in your own mindscapes

>No one wanted to talk after Angel was buried

>After the gas tanks and grave were filled, everyone hurried to leave as soon as possible in complete silence

>It had taken both Dee and Eve to hoist Riley into the Twin’s sidecar, Riley’s chest rising and lowering in shallow breaths

>Nobody turned to look back at gas station, inhabited now by nothing except swarming black flies

>You continued in silence for a couple hours till the next gas station

>Everyone filled their bikes and emptied their bladders

>And still nobody talked

>Back out on the open road you watch the landscape change color and shape, morphing into a more mountainous and uneven terrain

>You watch as the landscape fill with more and more trees with every mile, an actual living and breathing environment… just like home….

>You hear the familiar high-pitched cries erupt from the sky once again

>You look up and see the edges of the plague of vultures

>It seems you have caught up to the vile cloud

>You look down, trying to ignore the looming, dark, entity in the sky

>You space out into the asphalt, the yellow stripes streaking past your vision every second, hypnotizing you

>After who knows how long, Dee’s motorcycle juts abruptly as you feel it hop over something with its wheels

>You hear Dee curse under her breath, “Damn….What the?.....”

>You feel several more bumps as you see long rods of rebar scattered over the blurring asphalt below

>The smell of rotting meat and raw sewage fill the air

>As you look up, you see the plague of vultures descend onto the bridge coming up in front of you

>The entire median of the I-90 bridge is filled with thousands of bodies, all impaled on rusting metal rods of rebar stuck into poured concrete

>The bike convoy rides up onto the bridge over lake Washington and continues onwards to Seattle

>All the while, a sea of crooked rebar and gored bodies blur past you to your left

>You quickly notice something as you scan the spiked wall of horror

>They’re all human

>Every single last one, a human screaming out in pain, a tortured face stretched firmly over their skulls

>You finally come to the entrance of a concrete tunnel, with the words, “Seattle – portal to the pacific’ engraved into its top arch

>Splashed in bright red paint in giant letters across the engraving are the words, “Death to skins”

>Above the arch is after row of impaled humans, all in military garb, decorated for all to see above the tunnel’s entrance

>Everyone pulls their motorcycle off to the side of the road near the morbid entrance

> You climb off the bike and hobble to a mountain of piled bodies at the median in front of the tunnel entrance

>All of the bodies, in more military gear, thrown into one large decaying pile

>”Oh….dear…..” says Dee in a quiet tone behind you

>You hear Tyler spit, “the fuck…just…….the fuck…” before a fit of dry heaving

>”Well…uhhh…shit….this is new….” you hear Tyler say

>”…...Mace....” you hear Eve whisper to herself

>You look at the swarming pile of military bodies…

>None of them look familiar…

>You think….

>…

>You sit down, resting your head into your knees as the pile of distorted faces stare blankly at you

>Your mouth is filled with a rusty and metallic taste as you watch the swarming flies crawl in and out the mountain of the mummified caverns

>A couple minutes pass; the only sounds filling your ears are the rocks crunching under your pacing boots and vultures fighting over scraps

>You look up from your trance over at Dee, propped against her bike with her fingers pinched on the bridge of her muzzle

>You continue your gaze over to Eve, keeping a steady watch over Riley’s subtle heartbeat, purposely trying to keep her gaze from the scene of gore

>The twins are about five yards away, chatting to each other as they stare up at the tunnel arch

>You walk over to them as you hear whispers of their conversation

>“So…..do we just leave him here?....We can’t just do that….right?” said Tyler

>“We need to move on…..If we don’t get into the city soon…..mom……..” said Tinker

>“Alright, alright….what if we take mom on ahead an-“

>“And what? What are we going to do then? What if we run into trouble?”

>“Fuck…..Well ….I dunno. What if no ones in there? I mean worse comes to worse were still Sentients, not skins”

>“Phfft are you kidding me? What? You think that Sentients have a kinship or something? Did you just forget what happened back at Sturgis? Are you that naïve?

>“Alls I am saying is that this city prolly got some sort of “Brotherhood” of Sentients going on. You don’t just impale thousands of skins for fun…..ssshhhsshhhutthefuckup………..…hey what’s up ski-nnnn…..son?”

“If you two are going to make plans to ditch me then you might want to do it a little quieter” you say pulling a faded, old pack of swishers from your breast pocket and pinching out a creased cigarillo

>The twins look at each other for a second before facing you

>Before they can get a word out you raise your hand, “Doesn’t matter” you say lighting the tip of the swisher with an old rusted zippo

>”Well then….What’d you want?” said Tyler bracing her arm on her hip as she batted a fat fly away from her muzzle

“I want to know who’s officially in charge now. We need to decide this now, just incase…..” You say looking back at the barely breathing; slumped over figure of Riley in the sidecar

>”She’s going to make it. She’s still the leader and will always be.” Said Tinker with a growl

>You breath in the sweet stale air of the swisher as you feel the blood in your veins slow down, “I am not trying to kick her while she’s down Tinker, I just think we need to know whose calling the shots….We need a plan B, We can’t just have everyone lost and looking for direction”

>Tinker relaxes her stance slightly as she looks over at her sister, “We’ll discuss this AFTER we get mom to a working hospital ok ski-..human?”

>You take another drag of the cigarillo and nod to the twins, “Agreed”

>You turn around and walk towards Eve as the Twins argue under their breath

>Eve looks over at you, a creased frown etched onto her face, “Hey, Twigs…..”

“Hey” you say flicking the butt of the cigarillo over onto the side of the road as a black bird picks it up in its glossy beak, eating it

>”We need to get moving, there’s not much more I can do for her, she’s lost too much blood…..If she dies………I don’t know Twigs….I just don’t know what I’ll do…I…I….” stutters Eve with a slight choke as Dee comes over to her side and puts a paw on her back

>You can’t take this anymore, “Go on without me, leave me here and get her to a hospital” you say pulling out the bottle of painkillers Eve gave you and popping a couple more into your dry mouth

>”We can’t just leave you out here darling, what if the Bastards come by? What if the freaks who did all this….” Says Dee spreading her arms across the display of gore, “…come around? Huh?”

”Then I’ll die” you say matter-of-factly, your body humming with painkiller induced numbness and apathy

>Dee and Eve look down as their faces take on a grey, melancholy veil

>The wind blows another swarm of flies past you as the vultures can be heard arguing over a shredded liver

>Eve’s face lights up a bit, “I think I have an idea…Not the best idea…..but at least its something”

>You look over at Eve, pulling another swisher from the paper pack and lighting it, “Lay it on me doc”

>You pull at the bandages tightly knit around your crushed nose

>”Don’t pick at it! We don’t have anymore to fix it if you tear it, what you got is what you got” said Eve in a scolding tone

>Your entire head, neck, and hands are bound in gauze wrapping, obscuring all of your facial features

>A donated black robe from Delilah obscures everything else, making you feel like a mummy in a grim reaper costume

>You could feel the sadness in Delilah’s demeanor when Dee cut the robe down to fit your size

>”If anyone asks, you’re a female hyena cub recovering from severe, full body burns, ok? Don’t let anyone see your body. Obscure your face as much as you can and no speaking. If you need to say something just write it down or nod” said Dee frantically like a concerned mother as she re-adjusted your black hood

>You nod yes…. Unable to say much as the bandages squeeze against your mouth

>”That’s my boy…” said Dee with a strained smile as she cups the side of your head with her hand, “Now come on, lets go save Riley”

>You nod again as you follow Dee’s lead back onto her bike

>Everyone soon follows as you and Dee plunge into the dark abyss with only the single beam from the bike’s headlight to guide the way

>The tunnel hangs heavy with moisture, damp like the throat of some ancient stone golem

>The air smells of stony mildew and wet asphalt as you pull yourself close to Dee once more

>The sound of the engines vibrating off the tunnel walls echo through your empty stomach like the moaning of an grumpy beast waking from its long held slumber

>You close your eyes, hoping that when you open them, you’ll be met with a bright, shining, pre-war city

>The same

>It’s just the same as everywhere else….

>You can’t really say that your surprised….but somehow you are

>You were hoping somewhere in the pit of your heart that Seattle would be different….

>Despite the gory welcome mat…

>But its not…

>Just more beasts….

>As the group twists and turns along the empty buildings and streets you quickly realize that Seattle is probably about one-sixteenth the size it was before the war

>Most of the city is empty, abandoned, and ghostly except for a small area in the downtown epicenter

>Not a single human…Just a handful of beasts walking back and forth across the streets, building to building, all in various states of disrepair

>Including the hospitals

>Every single hospital you come across is either empty and vandalized beyond use or destroyed

>You were about to give up hope that the city had any functioning hospital till you reached downtown

>Just as you pull into downtown you’re met with a large medical building with half vandalized sign reading, “University of –Death to skins”

>You park your bikes on the street near the front door where sentients of all shapes and sizes rush in and out of the hospital’s double doors wearing doctor or nurse garb

>If it wasn’t for the all the jagged spray paint on the side of the building screaming “Death to Skins! Fuck the Flesh Reich!”, you’d think this hospital was pre-war immaculate

>”Tinker,Tyler. You two go looking for supplies in the market place close by. I don’t think I need to remind you two to keep your heads down as much as possible. Any sign of the Bastards and you report back to us a.s.a.p.” said Dee slinging Riley’s arm over her shoulder and lifting the massive female from the sidecar

>The twins nodded as they both flashed Dee with guns in their waistbands, “You don’t need to worry about us Dee. We ain’t gonna let them take us by surprise again” said Tyler

>”No confrontation! You see the Bastards, you run back here understand?” said Dee in a serious tone as she glared at Tyler

>Tyler glared back for a second as she stewed up a snarky remark before glancing her eyes to Riley’s unconscious face

>Tyler just straightened up and nodded back to Dee before turning to Tinker, “Come on Sis, Let’s go”

>The twins head off towards a bustling street corner where beasts hock various junk and goods, the characteristic shouts of people haggling coming clear from the crowd

>Eve rushes over to Riley’s other side and shoulders the rest of her weight as the three head towards the entrance of the hospital

>You limp slowly after them

>You light another cigarillo and take a drag through a tiny hole in your bandages, the mix of pain killers and tobacco keep you numb to most of the pain but it’s still not enough to drag the feeling of uneasiness from your mind

>The four of you make your way to the receptionist, a small female wolf busy reading a magazine probably close to two decades out of print

>The wolf seems to not notice the four of you until she lets out a couple deep sniffs

>She looks up from her tattered and stained gossip rag, glaring at your mummied face, “Who the fuck said you could smoke in here?” she says pointing to an old “no smoking” sign, half of it obscured with spray paint reading, “Rip the skins limb by limb!”

>You remember what Dee said as you pull the rim of your hood down and quickly crush the cigarillo out against your boot

>”That’s more like it freak show. Now, you all can head on to the back. There should be an open doctor somewhere” said the wolf nodding down the hall next to her before putting her muzzle back to the rag

>The four of you walk down the hall, many of the rooms you pass are empty and without power

>You continue onward till you come to a small, well lit, GP room

>You all look inside and see an older looking otter leaning over a cluttered desk covered in empty bottles of scotch and patient files

>He looks over at you and flinches before readjusting the small circular glasses perched on his muzzle

>He ushers you all into the room in a very soft-spoken voice, “Come in, come in.
