When she's dragged to one for a field trip, she tries her best to keep her gripes quiet. When she fails, she unknowingly puts a target on her back. Jennifer is struck by a dart, silencing her in a way that no one is prepared for.

Commission for LH695 on FA
Professor Mitchum’s Biodiversity, Evolution, and Ecology class had been looking forward to their visit to the city zoo. It was an extra credit opportunity the entire class of 23 students took up on. Enough about reading about animals in textbooks or watching videos. It was time to see them in person. Many of the students couldn’t even remember the last time they had been to the zoo. Most of them were little kids still in elementary or middle school. Pervading their trip was a giddy excitement they hadn’t indulged in for years. No matter how strait-laced they tried to act, every one of them was itching to see some animals.

That was everyone except for Jennifer. She loathed zoos, condemning them all as inhumane and cruel. It had been a longtime opinion of hers that animals should not be confined to concrete enclosures no better than what humans put their prisoners in. It was not some hippy-dippy opinion that she stewed over for no reason. Virtually every study she had read regarding the sanctity of zoos condemned them for not only being harmful to the animals they contained but also to the ecosystems that were deprived of their presence. The defense of such an industry was reprehensible in Jennifer’s eyes. It disgusted her that Professor Mitchum thought it a good idea to bring them there for an Ecology class, of all things. Didn’t he know how wretched these places were?

Alas, she still had to go. Her unwavering study habits demanded that she get the extra credit and improve her grade, even though it was almost perfect. She could already hear her mother reprimanding her for giving up the chance to boost her GPA. I don’t care if they’re holding the animals prisoner! Get over there and get that grade up! Jennifer spent the entire bus ride next to the window, her arms crossed over her ample chest, sneering as she watched the city float past. Her golden hair was crumpled into a bun on the back of her scalp. It’d be so much better if we were going to a reserve or a rescue. The nearest reserve was a 40 minute drive out west, well outside of how far the school was ready to let any of the students go on their watch. Pussies.

Jennifer’s friend Melissa was beside her. She wasn’t nearly as ornery. A bright smile lit up her face as she chatted with the other students in the seats surrounding them. She was excited to see some monkeys, her favorite animal. She and the people she chatted with were all discussing which animal they looked forward to seeing the most like a gang of schoolchildren. She looked back at Jennifer and saw her still glaring out the window.

“Hey!” Melissa said.

Jennifer turned. “What’s up?”

“Did you see what animals they had here?”

“Yeah. I went online.”

“Which one you wanna see the most?”

Jennifer grimaced. “None of them.”

Melissa’s smile collapsed. “What? Really?”

“Mmhmm.”

“Why?”

“You know I hate zoos.”

“Well, yeah, but you wanna see the animals, right?”

“Oh yeah! I love seeing animals, just not in a zoo. Anywhere but a zoo. They’re like prisons for animals.”

“Oh.” An awkward pause followed. Everyone around who had heard suddenly pretended to be focused somewhere else. “Well, if you had to see any of the animals here in the wild, and not the zoo, which one would it be?”

Jennifer had to think for a moment. Practically the entire zoo’s roster included animals that fascinated her. Choosing any of them over the others felt like a sacrilege. “Well, if I had to choose… The gorillas.”

Melissa’s smile returned. “Oh yeah? Gorillas are cool.”

Jennifer managed to smile too. “Yeah, and I know you wanna see monkeys.”

Melissa started bouncing in her seat and clapping her hands. “I wanna see monkeys! I wanna see monkeys!”

Jennifer laughed with her. If her friend and everyone else were this excited to go to the zoo, then who was she to ruin it for them?

The zoo peeled into view only a few minutes later. It cut a large swathe out of the cityscape, sprouting with enormous trees and complex animal enclosures. Students sitting next to the aisle stood up and leaned over their friends next to the window for a better look. People on the other side migrated over to them. Professor Mitchum had to tell everyone to sit down. The animals weren’t going anywhere. Jennifer was still in her seat. If only they could.

Once everyone had sat back down Mr. Mitchum went over the itinerary for the day. They would go from exhibit to exhibit, learning about the animals they contained. Everybody was expected to take photos and write a small report on anything they learned that day. There were certain to be plenty of pictures taken, although more likely than not people would just write about stuff they found on the internet. Mitchum grabbed a plastic bin out of the seat across from him and opened it to reveal a few stacks of neon yellow T-shirts displaying the zoo’s logo. He went from seat to seat, giving everyone their proper size and telling them to put it on.

Jennifer scoffed after she got hers. “Come on. Does he think we’re kindergarteners?”

He overheard and looked over his shoulder at her. “No, but there’s no way in hell I’m gonna lose a single one of you. I’m not taking any chances.”

Jennifer rolled her eyes and pulled the shirt down over her head. All it did was add an extra layer of pressure to her breasts, making them feel like they were ready to tear through. Today is gonna last forever.

Everyone on the bus got up and filed out into the bright spring air. It was a beautiful day at least, worthy of tight, revealing shorts like Jennifer wore. The front entrance was a fake stone booth blazing the zoo’s name in a Jurassic Park font. Beneath it were several turnstiles the many visitors were filing through. The class entered and were greeted by a series of buildings modeled to look like mud huts with thatched roofs. Jennifer could faintly hear the bleat of several wild animals in the distance. An aviary was beside them. In it were dozens of fantastically colored birds flapping their wings and soaring around their mediocre territory. She recognized the startling sapphire of a hyacinth macaw. It shared its cage with many other species who squawked and chittered among the leaves.

Jennifer was just wondering what it would look like if she cut a hole in the wired roof. They would storm out of there in a tornado of colors, their bright feathers drifting down into their former prison as their token of remembrance. A romantic thought, but a hopeless one too. I’d just be dooming them to die in the city. I can’t do them any favors.

Mitchum rounded up the class and herded them to the next exhibit. It was a two-story building with small enclosures pardoned off by panes of glass. One such exhibit had an artificial pond and a jungle setting around it. A capybara floated in the water, the top of their head breaching the surface. He drifted there, lazy and aloof, while a giant otter dove into the water nearby. Jennifer’s classmates pointed and said “aww” while she just stood there in front of the glass, bitterly noting how small the enclosure was. The rest of the building was no better. A colony of prairie dogs shared a room no bigger than a swimming pool. A full grown tapir had about half of a basketball court. Hardly a small animal, it didn’t deserve to be locked up indoors all day, not to mention the dozens of other creatures that were there. Everyone else snapped away with their phone cameras. Jennifer wasn’t in the mood.

Next came the reptiles. It was much of the same with enormous anacondas being curled up in a space they couldn’t even unfurl themselves in. A lace monitor lizard sat beneath his heat lamp, completely motionless besides his occasional flick of the tongue. Crammed inside one glass cage were maybe a dozen or so anoles. Jennifer recognized it as a tactic pet sellers used to garner sympathy in customers so that they would buy one. But this wasn’t a pet store. None of these animals were for sale. Why were they being crammed together like this? Repeated assurances that she was overreacting did not quell her anger.

They went to the amphibian building next. Same story: too large animals in too small spaces. That, or too many in too small a space. Jennifer found some relief in that it was the last building they had to go through, but knowing that the animals would remain behind ached her heart. The rest of the exhibits were outside. They included some of the prime attractions: elephants, rhinos, tigers, lions, gorillas, monkeys (to Melissa’s great delight), hyenas, so on and so forth.

First they visited the big cats section where they had lions and tigers in two separate enclosures. The lion’s den was a deep depression dug out of the earth, going about 30 feet deep. Surrounding them was a sheer concrete wall, a shelf of land, then a moat of water. Where the lions roamed was an island of dry dirt and a large rock formation where the four of them lounged. There was one male and three lionesses. The male sat at the pinnacle of the rock formation, his black-and-blonde lion mane wrapped around his head. His pink paddle of a tongue bounced in his open maw as he panted. The females weren’t any more impressive, lying nearby either on their stomachs or on their side. A zoologist nearby lectured the crowd about how the lions lived, what they ate, how old they could be, numbers in the wild, etc., etc. Jennifer paid no attention. All she could think about was how bleak the concrete walls looked as they penned the lions in their miniscule slice of the savannah.

The group moved on to the tiger pit. It was nearly identical to that of the lions’. There were only two tigers living in it. According to the zoologist delivering his own lecture on the imprisoned beasts, one was a male, the other a female.

One student asked. “Can you keep more than one male in an enclosure?”

“Oh, you can,” said the zoologist. “But it’s not a good idea. These guys can be verrrrry territorial. It’s best to keep one male and give him a few gals for company.”

One student asked what they were all thinking. “Do they mate?”

Some snickers among the class. The zoologist played it professionally. “Only during mating season. Any offspring they have is taken care of here until they get too big to keep. From there we sell them to other zoos.

“How about the wild?” Jennifer asked.

Every head in the class turned towards her. “Well, I’m afraid animals that are raised in zoos can’t make it in the wild.”

“You can give them to rescues,” Jennifer said. “They raise animals to be put in the wild.”

The zoologist’s genial smile faltered. “We know, but we like to keep the child with its mother until it’s old enough to leave.”

No. You hold onto it while it’s young and attracts customers. Jennifer kept her mouth shut. There was no point in making a scene. She nodded calmly. “OK. I see.”

Melissa was beside her, sensing her irritability. She nudged her. “Hey. You good?”

“Huh? Yeah! I’m fine.”

“You sure? I know you don’t like this place.”

“No, I don’t.” This wasn’t the conversation she wanted to be having. “What’s next after this?”

Melissa grinned. “You’re in luck. I’m pretty sure it’s the gorillas.”

On cue, professor Mitchum asked the zoologist where the gorilla enclosure was from there. “Right around the corner!” he answered, pointing down a cobblestone pathway. “Take a left and you’ll see her.”

“Alright!” Mitchum waved everyone on. “Come on, y’all! Let’s go see Mrs. Kong.”

Jennifer made an odd look. “Mrs. Kong?”

“Yeah, apparently there’s only one gorilla,” Melissa said as she followed the rest of the class towards the enclosure.

“One? Online it said there were two!”

Melissa shrugged. “I don’t know what happened. Hopefully the other one didn’t kick the bucket, or something.”

Images of a gorilla dragging a small boy through some water flashed through Jennifer’s mind. “Yeah, I sure hope not.”

They came upon the gorilla enclosure. It followed the same theme as the big cats’ with another wall of concrete and a large rocky outcropping. Here there was a cave in the rocks, either for the gorilla to go in and out of or an entrance for the zoologists to come in from underground. At the very center of the island was a lone female gorilla sitting on her butt, crunching on what appeared to be a stalk of bamboo. Her thick, graphite lips would open to reveal an impressive set of sharp, white fangs. Even under her thick coat of black arm hair Jennifer could see just how built she was, sporting a pair of biceps that could crush a man’s skull. Her face, with its thick brow and flat nostrils, were remarkably expressive. Just from the way she placidly chewed on her bamboo made Jennifer ponder how intelligent they were.

Thus, it was all the sadder seeing her all by herself without another gorilla to keep her company. Thinking about the friend or mate she had potentially lost was heartbreaking. Simmering her empathy into a tangible wrath was the fact that if she was out in the wild she wouldn’t be alone. Another zoologist was rattling off her spiel about gorillas to the crowd around her. She spoke with a bright smile. Her olive zookeeper uniform looked crisp along with the broad Stetson hat she wore on her head. Jennifer didn’t doubt that she cared for the gorilla behind her, but didn’t she know that the place she worked for was evil? They asked if there were any questions.

“Yeah, I got one,” said Jennifer. Once again, all eyes fell on her. Melissa groaned nearby.

“Sure! Ask away.”

“What’d you say her name was?” Jennifer asked, pointing at the gorilla.

“Her name’s Anini. She’s 13 years old.”

“Anini. Online it said you had two gorillas. Did something happen to them?”

The zookeeper frowned. “I am sorry to say that Rikki passed away a few weeks ago.” The crowd sighed their grief. “Yeah, we’ve all been taking it pretty hard. Fortunately, we’ve been working on getting her a partner! She won’t be alone for long!”

“Will it be a male?” Jennifer asked.

“Most likely!”

Jennifer nodded. “That’s good, at least.” She leaned back on the railing, facing the lonesome Anini. Poor gal. All alone. Lost your partner. Probably doesn’t even know where he is or what happened to him. I ho-

THWACK!

It was like someone had punched Jennifer in the back of her neck. Pain rippled down her spine. Her head ducked into her shoulders to guard her wounded neck while her elbows recoiled backwards. She screamed. “OW!” Everyone in the crowd jumped and looked to see her grabbing at her neck. Her fingers closed around a cold, plastic tube. Something was stuck in the flesh of her neck, jammed between the back of her head and her shoulders.

Jennifer collapsed to her knees. Pain stabbed at her, radiating down her back and throughout her shoulders. She felt cold steel sticking out of her, only an inch above the nape of her neck. People came scrambling over to see what had happened. They found her doubled over with one hand on the cobblestone ground, the other holding onto what looked like a fishing lure. Melissa squatted next to her and held her.

“Jenny! What happened?”

“I don’t know!” cried Jennifer. Tears poured down her face, twisted by agony and confusion.

Professor Mitchum joined them. He saw the colorful feathers jutting from Jennifer’s fingers. He grabbed her wrist and pulled gently. “Let me see it.” Jennifer resisted at first, unwilling to let her neck be exposed again. She relaxed her arm, though not without making Mitchum have to work for it. What they saw made them recoil with shock. “What the hell?”

“What?” Jennifer demanded. “What is it?”

“It’s a dart!” Melissa cried. The small crowd that had gathered around them muttered the same thing. Stuck in the center of Jennifer’s neck was a red and yellow colored blow dart. Its needle point was a shiny stainless steel, the very tip of which was buried in her skin, trickling a small amount of blood. Its tail was a poof of red and yellow feathers.

“What!?” Jennifer cried out.

“I think somebody shot you with it.” Mitchum said.

“Why?” She wept loudly. “Why would someone do thaa-aaa-aaat?”

Melissa was sobbing too. Mitchum could only gawk at the dart with frightened confusion. People around them held their hands over their mouths. Children were hurried away. A garish few drew their phones and filmed Jennifer in her misery.

The zookeeper shoved herself through the crowd and came across the crime scene. “Oh my God! What happened?”

Mitchum looked up at her, the desperation clear on his face. “Someone shot her with a blowdart.”

The zookeeper gasped dramatically. “Oh no! Did you see who did it?” Mitchum and the others shook their heads. “Did anyone see who did it?” she asked the rest of the crowd. Unfortunately, everyone shook their heads. “Oh no. That’s not good.”

“Do you have EMT’s here?” Mitchum asked.

“Yes we do.” She drew a walkie talkie from her hip and spoke into it. “I need medical help at the gorilla enclosure. We have a visitor who got darted. I repeat. We have a visitor who got darted.” She holstered the walkie talkie and knelt beside Jennifer. “Here. Let me look at it.” Mitchum and Melissa moved aside. She peered closely at the dart while Jennifer sniffled and sobbed. “Son of a bitch. Someone really shot you.”

“Is it… Is it poisoned?” Jennifer asked. Her eyes glistened with tears. They streaked down her reddened cheeks, leaving behind thin trails.

“No, I don’t think so, but I’m not gonna leave it in you in case it is.” She reached for the dart. “Be very still.”

“Oh God…” whimpered Jennifer. “Please, be careful.”

“I will, sweetheart. Just be still for me.” She laid one hand on the knob of her spine and very gently pinched the dart between her thumb and index finger, right where the needle met the body. In just one small pull the dart was out of her, leaving a shallow pinprick that started to ooze blood. Jennifer gasped when it came out. A great shudder rolled through her. She was happy to have the dart out, but who knew what it had put inside of her? The zookeeper pocketed the dart and drew out a packet of large band aids from her vest pouch. She covered Jennifer’s puncture wound and gave it a nice pat. “There we go. Hopefully that does something.”

Jennifer sniffled. “Thank you.”

“No problem, sweetheart.” She stood up and faced the crowd. Her arms shoved them away with a gesture. “Alright, alright. Show’s over. Give the girl some room.”

Everyone who wasn’t a student of Mitchum’s dispersed. Jennifer sat down and leaned against the enclosure fence. She kept her hand over the bandaid, feeling the prick of pain that lay just beneath its latex padding. Why the fuck would someone do that? She wiped away her tears. Some fucking prankster.

Melissa and Mitchum both crouched next to her. “Are you OK?” asked Melissa.

“I think so. It doesn’t hurt too bad.” Rubbing around the band aid felt like touching where she had blood drawn. “It scared me more than anything.”

“Me too,” Mitchum said. “It sure sounded like it hurt.”

“Yeah. It did at first.”

Mitchum looked down both ways across the enclosure. “Where the hell are the medical staff? They should’ve been here by now.”

“You don’t feel sick, do you?” Melissa asked. Her hand held onto Jennifer’s wrist tightly.

“No,” she groaned. “I don’t think so.” She sniffled. “I just… I just…” She trailed off. Her eyes lost focus, staring ahead blankly.

“Jennifer?” said a panicked Melissa. “Jenny?”

“I’m fine,” she answered blankly. “I think…” That last sniffle had picked up something strange on the wind. Not bad, not good, but certainly attention grabbing. Every subtle whiff drew more and more of it. Soon she couldn’t stop huffing it, clearing her nostrils of snot and replacing it with that peculiar stench. Sniff-sniff. “Do you guys smell that?” Sniff-sniff.

Both of them tested the air. “No?” said Mitchum. Having phantom smells after being hit with a blow dart did not bode well. “Are you alright? It doesn’t smell like burnt toast or wire, does it?”

Jennifer frowned. “No, I’m not having a stroke. It smells like…” Sniff-sniff. “Fuck, it smells like…” Sniffffff. Heavy, dense, and earthy, like pure nature. She couldn’t get enough of it. Sniffff. Snifffff. Sniiiiffffffff. “Oh fuck. Y’all really don’t smell that? Fuck. Where is it coming from?”

Before anybody could question her further, she stood up. Her nostrils flared with each heaving whiff. Her hand was still clamped to the back of her neck as she spun in a circle, searching for the nucleus of such a heavenly miasma. She came to a stop, facing the gorilla enclosure. Anini was on her fours, looking up at the small crowd at the fence. She had heard Jennifer’s scream and the silence that followed. Looking up from within her enclosure at the people who weren’t paying her any attention effectively grabbed hers.

That’s where the smell was coming from. Jennifer grabbed the wooden railing with both hands and leaned over it. She sniffed so hard her eyes rolled back into her head behind flickering eyelids. “Oh shit…” she huffed. “That’s it.” The folks who had stayed around were completely baffled. Whatever that dart had pumped her full of clearly was having some sort of effect.

“Jenny?” Melissa asked cautiously. She was concerned over how far forward Jennifer was leaning. “Are you OK? You’re a little close to the railing, there.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,” stammered Jennifer. “I just gotta… smell more of this stuff. I… Holy shit.” Her mind was a ball of steel wool thrashing about into a fuzz. Every inhale was like an added strike to her cognizance. She was no longer aware of the potentially dangerous drop in front of her. It might as well have been a drop off the side of a bed, Anini’s smell was so luring. Jennifer licked her lips. She had to go get it.

Jennifer took a step back from the railing. For a moment the people watching thought she was going to leave. A brief sense of relief washed through them before Jennifer bent her knees and vaulted herself into the enclosure. A great scream tore through the crowd. Mitchum sprinted forward to grab her, his mouth letting loose a no! Melissa was behind him, holding her hands in front of her face and screaming. Mitchum was too late. When he snatched his arm down the enclosure’s wall he grabbed nothing but blank air.

Jennifer plummeted into the moat legs-first. She did not crumple to the bottom, but bent her legs to land into a perfect squat like a superhero. Water splashed around her, soaking her legs, her shirt, and the moss-stained concrete right behind her. Anini snorted and ran away immediately on her two legs, looking back at her intruder before disappearing into the rock formation’s cave. Jennifer didn’t run after her. She stood up slowly and marched forward, sloshing the water around her knees. She climbed onto the island. Her bright yellow shirt was soaked from the breasts-down, clinging the fabric to her skin. Her expression was like pure shock, staring ahead at nothing but the perceived cloud of gorilla smell that had so thoroughly entranced her.

She stood at the center of the island, rung by a shocked audience of onlookers. Her classmates screamed at her to stop, to lay down and play dead before Anini came back out. Almost everyone had their phones out, recording her every move. There were no zookeepers to be seen, in or above the enclosure.

Jennifer continued whiffing. Every following exhale was an animalistic growl that echoed off the concrete walls. Her scent-addled mind carried its influence across her body, striking a fire across every hormone. Burning the brightest was that in her loins. It was a conflagration, one that could not be quenched on its own. She tore at her shorts. The button popped off and the zipper ripped downwards. She mooned the crowd by removing her shorts. There was a terrible groan of disgust as several people tore away from the railing. Several folk called 9-1-1. The few who remained were either her classmates or those too transfixed to look away or stop recording.

Her feet came out of her shorts while she grabbed her panties. She stopped. Bloating the cup of her white underwear was a clot of meat that had appeared on her crotch. Swung to the side was a modest pillar. Her heart plummeted down an elevator. “Oh no…” She knew that pulling her panties down would reveal something she didn’t want to see, but there was no point in hiding it. They peeled downwards, lifting the curtain on a fully developed set of male organs. Terror seized her at once. “Oh my God!” She clapped her hands over her mouth, gawking at the small but significant cock and balls that had sprouted from her groin

The scrotum was shrunken into a gray sack of wrinkled skin. Above it jutted her penis, currently flaccid within a cocoon of pinched foreskin. A faint breeze swept through the enclosure, brushing her newly acquired member and confirming that it was in fact real. The folks who could see it gasped. More of them left; others zoomed in on their phones. Jennifer just stood there, wallowing in her self-revulsion with her panties clung to her legs just above her knees, her bare buttocks shining.

Her terror crumpled once the smell of the enclosure found her again. It caressed her face like the silky hands of a nurse assuring a patient that everything was going to be OK. Jennifer’s eyes closed as she took a few more deep whiffs. “Oh God…” Her cock stiffened, poking itself free of her foreskin. A great shudder billowed through her legs, jiggling the flesh of her buttocks and thighs. Across her muscles settled a great density like she had just finished working out. She looked down at her arms. The sinews and tendons had risen to the surface of her skin. Her veins serpentined like rivers. The ghostly hairs that covered her skin were much thicker, going from a barely noticeable layer of softness to a veritable jungle of blonde. The same was happening to her legs, her chest, her head, her belly, and her shoulders. What’s going on?

Closing her fist brought with it a heavy wrenching sound as the muscles in her forearms grinded across each other. Her fingers grew fat. The palms thickened into something like leather. Her forearms were like cannons now, hidden behind a jungle of hair- no, fur -that was now a deep black. Her legs bloated too, but they did not gain any length. Instead they began to shrink, bringing her center of gravity closer to the ground.

She turned to face the crowd watching her. It was a ring of horrified faces, each one unable to fully process what they were witnessing. A full-grown woman had jumped into a gorilla pen, stripped naked, and was now slowly turning into a gorilla. This was some kind of stunt, right? If it was, she was a damn good actor. A roar of fright bellowed from her maw which was now jutting out of her face. Her nose was sinking while the nostrils expanded. Her brow hardened across her forehead, shading her eyes. The beautiful blonde hair on her head fell out in clumps. In its place came a prairie of coarse black. Her humanity was officially gone once the last patch of pale skin grew invisible beneath her fur.

Her legs continued to shrink, though they maintained their girth. Her shoulders broadened and her chest swelled. The shirts she wore could contain them no longer. Riiiiiiiip! The threads burst apart, revealing a brawny torso. Her large breasts were gone. They had flattened into a pair of leathery, black pecs. A great muscle belly curved out beneath them. Her hands were now like mitts. The fingers were long and heavy while her feet might as well have been hands themselves. Her big toes migrated down the flanks of her soles to become a new pair of opposable thumbs. Her upright posture bowed forward in favor of holding herself up by her knuckles.

Meanwhile, Jennifer’s arousal still raged. Her penis, now nothing more than a prick of gray flesh between a pair of howitzer thighs, was hard like steel. She looked down at it, unsure how to satisfy her violent urge, one that made her toes curl. But those weren’t toes, they were fingers, perfectly capable of grabbing onto things. She didn’t think on it any longer. She plopped down on her butt and curled her feet-hands into her crotch where she grasped her penis. A primal huff burst through her maw as the pleasure came instantly. She panted and roared like a true gorilla, baring her fangs and jerking her cock as hard as she could.

That was the last straw for just about everyone else. The railing was empty of all zoo-goers, including her classmates and professor. There was nothing left to see. Jennifer was gone. They missed the triumph of her orgasm, one that blew out of her and speckled the dirt in front of her. They did not see it, but the people leaving heard her deafening roar of delight that heralded the official christening of her new ape body.

She huffed and puffed for a solid half-minute as she fell off her peak. It was oddly quiet after that. No one was there watching or filming. She resumed her gorilla stance, curiously looking at the railing and wondering where everybody went. She sniffed the air with her flat ape nose. Nobody was around.

That was except for Anini who came out of her cave cautiously. The roars of another gorilla had gotten her attention. She peeked around the corner to see not a scary human lady but a towering silverback. She hooted in surprise and crawled the rest of the way out of the cave. Jennifer saw her and hooted back. The two of them met at the center of the enclosure, timidly inspecting one another. Jennifer wanted nothing more than to verbally introduce herself but could muster nothing more than some grunts and huffs. I guess we’re stuck with ape talk. Oh well. This’ll do.

They took turns sniffing each other, holding hands, and exchanging grunts. Though she did not express it as explicitly as a human would, Jennifer could feel a great smile coming from Anini. It was like a great wound had started healing. As a token of their friendship, Anini wandered over to a nearby patch of bamboo and tore off a shoot. She came back, snapped it in half, and shared it with Jennifer. Jennifer accepted happily, sat down, and started munching alongside her newest friend.

\\*\\*\\*

Janet marched up the steps of the watchtower in her clunky zookeeper boots. She had marched over to the tall building that overlooked the entire zoo immediately after clearing the crowd from around the poor girl that got shot. The dart felt heavy in her pocket. The sight of blood trickling down Jennifer’s neck still glowed in her mind. She made it to the top floor and burst through the door. In front of her was the balcony looking over the complex. A man was kicked back in a chair with his feet on the railing. A sniper rifle with the bolt pulled open was leaning next to him.

He jolted and turned around to see Janet. “Hey!” he said. “Everything OK?”

Janet grinned. “Yeah. Just wanted to come up and say nice shot.”

The man smiled. “Thanks! I think I outdid myself.”

Janet walked up beside him. She gazed out into the complex of manufactured ecosystems. “The change went great. He’s getting along with Anini just fine.”

“Awesome. That’s good to hear. What’s next on the list?”

Janet pulled her phone out of her pocket and opened the notes. An unnamed page had a list of animals. At the top was “gorilla”. She deleted it as she had the several animals that had come before it. “Hippopotamus,” she said.

“Hippopotamus,” he repeated, leaning back in his chair. “No problem.”

THE END"}
