Pain Of The Past

He shivered and saw a small burst of mist escape his lips and he looked around confused then suddenly realized he was in a freezer of sorts. Even with the coat he wore the cold seemed to sink into his bones. He rubbed his hands together to get them warn as his mind swirled in a haze

His whole body shook uncontrollably and suddenly he became aware of what was going on and where he was. He knew this place like the back of his hand. He had been here many times but he could not remember why. He just knew he had to keep walking forward because there was something he had to see.

He was terrified of whatever it was but he just could not stop himself and his body refused to listen as he thought about turning and leaving. He knew he had to keep going. There was something in the back he had to look at and identify.

It was different each time he came and he wondered what, or who, they would be this time. He walked to the back of the morgue where they keep the bodies from spoiling. The morticians had left for some reason and he was alone. He walked up to the first table and a body lay motionless under a sheet covering it. His hand shook as he reached out and pulled it back revealing the face of Kyle Oliver as he stared lifeless at the ceiling.

Donald wanted to scream but the cry remained stuck in his throat. There were four other bodies that still needed to be uncovered and identified. The second body was of Tyler and the third was of Charlie. Donald shook but he kept going with the last two and he saw two more student’s from his history classes at school.

Donald Preston shook then suddenly Kyle jumped up and grabbed his arm with an iron grip that he could not break free from.

“Look what you did to us! Look what you did to all of us!!!” Kyle screamed with an eerie voice that was not his but of someone else. Mr. P pulled his arm free and Kyle’s arm broke loose at the elbow but the hand remained attached to Mr. P’s arm.

“No! Leave me alone!” Mr. P shouted as he tried to run away but Kyle laughed and the four other bodies sat up and turned to face him. They staggered like zombies as their naked forms advanced towards him. Mr. P fell to the floor and curled into the fetal position as they continued to laugh and advance towards him.

Donald Preston jumped up screaming in his bed as sweat slicked down the front of his chest soaking the sheets. It was that damn dream again, he thought, the same dream he had every night since the accident. He sat up taking deep breaths wondering if he could go back to sleep again.

When he first became a teacher he thought he was the best thing ever. No one was as good as Donald Preston and his students all loved him. He made learning fun and he was close to their ages so he was one of the boys, or so they said.

The one secret he kept, and it wasn’t really a secret in his mind because he felt he really didn’t have a problem, was that he liked to drink. He drank a little too much at times but he felt it wasn’t a problem he could handle it. He proved this when he’d drive home from the clubs without incident.

One night he got into an accident, though he could not remember the details of it except that five of his students had been driving in the car he hit, or had they hit him? He could not remember clearly. To make things go better he took some of the extra alcohol he had stashed in his car and poured it all over the inside where the dead students lay.

The police would claim they had died driving drunk and no one would suspect him because he drove his car miles and miles in the opposite direction then abandoned it. The next morning he reported that his car was stolen and since it was nowhere near the accident no one made the connection!

He had gotten away scot free and he even was mournful as it was announced that five students died while drunk driving. His reputation and his career were saved. The only trouble was that every night he was somehow cursed to walk into the morgue and five the dead bodies of five of his students night after night.

it seemed his conscience would not let him get away with it after all! The bodies were the five he had killed but slowly over time their faces changed to the newer students he had. He had given up drinking and had been sober ever since then. Even joined Alcoholics Anonymous but through it he kept up the lie and had never revealed that he murdered his students. He was too afraid it would get out and ruin his career.

So no matter what he tried he could not escape from himself and his conscious. He had dedicated himself to helping his students not make the same mistakes he had but no matter what he did it never seemed to be enough to atone.

“Hey good lookin’ ” Charlie shouted as he ran up to Kyle as he walked down the street. Kyle didn’t seem to hear him as he walked with his head down looking t the sidewalk.

“Um hello! Earth to Major Kyle. Can you hear us, Major Tom?” Charlie joked as he reached out and grabbed Kyle by his shoulder. Kyle jumped started and gave a weak mile as he looked at his friend. Charlie instantly knew something was wrong and folded his arms across his chest.

“Hey Charlie,” Kyle replied softly.

“OK what’s wrong?” Charlie asked forcefully, expecting an answer.

“Sorry, I just have a lot on my mind.” Kyle deflected but Charlie was not convinced as he eyed him skeptically.

“Good then you can unload some of that baggage by telling me what’s going on.” Kyle blushed as he realized Charlie would not let him slip by without telling him everything.

“It’s Tyler,”

“Who’s that?” Charlie interrupted.

“My best friend… or rather I thought he was my best friend.” Kyle said.

“What’d you mean, thought?”

“I dunno but I told him my secret and he locked me in a locker at school for no reason.”

“No reason? Wait a minute, what secret are you talking about?” Charlie asked, trying to make sense out of the vague clues Kyle was giving.

“I… I told him I was gay.” Kyle blurted out and Charlie was unphased by it. He gave Kyle a look as if he had said the sky was blue or water was wet. Kyle was surprised by Charlie’s reaction.

“Yeah so?” Charlie finally replied as Kyle's pause seemed to make Kyle uncomfortable.

“Wait, don’t you care?” Kyle asked, confused.

“I knew it all along. You forget that I have Gay-Dar and I can detect these things.” Charlie lied.

“Gay-Dar?” Kyle asked, scratching his head because he had never heard of that one before.

“Yeah it’s like radar but it lets me detect when someone is gay. It’s never wrong even when the person I expose lies and says they’re straight. They are not, they are lying because my Gay-Dar is never, never wrong.” Charlie explained.

“Do I have Gay-Dar?” Kyle asked innocently.

“Yeah but until you learn how to use it you probably won’t be able to tell like I can. See, most people have gay moments and occasionally even Straights make blips on my Gay-Dar. You’ll understand when you’re older.” Charlie said as he smiled his famous smile.

“But Charlie, you’re barely older than I am.” Kyle countered.

“BUT I have more experience. I bet you haven’t even been to the gay clubs around here.”

“Wait, what??? What gay clubs?!” Kyle interrupted.

“Come along my boy, you have a lot to learn.” Charlie replied as he put his arm around Kyle’s shoulders and led him down the street.

“Put that damn thing out now!” His wife yelled at him. “They’ll be here any minute and I don’t need you smelling like a chimney.” The Coach put out his cigarette and waved his arms to try and get rid of the smoke.

His wife went and opened the front door to greet their daughter and eight year old grandson. Their daughter was dressed in a blue business suit with the skirt an inch above her knees and white shirt with the top button undone. She is a flight attendant and since she and her husband had been divorced she often had her parents babysit while she worked.

“Hi,” Claire said and her mother hugged her and looked down at her grandson. He stood there rigidly waiting for his grandfather to call him. He smiled but was trying not to smile and his eyes gleamed with excitement as he waited.

The Coach nervously waited in the other room trying to plan the right moment to call out to his grandson. Claire chucked and strolled in.

“Just call him already, we haven't got all day dad.” She said as she and her mother went to the kitchen while her son stood at the front door waiting.

“Alright get in here soldier,” The Coach shouted and his grandson ran in and hugged him as his arms wrapped around his legs. The boy's head reached the danger area of a man and The Coach always groaned in fear as his grandson grabbed him to hug him.

Tommy was only 5 years old with brown hair and green eyes and he was in his favorite pair of overalls by OshKosh B'Gosh. Since The Coach was a former drill sergeant, he and Tommy played soldier with The Coach being a drill sergeant at basic training and Tommy was a new recruit.

“Stand up straight, chest out!” The Coach playfully yelled as Tommy straightened up. “March!” The Coach ordered and Tommy began to mark around the living room with his grandfather shouting out orders every so often. It was their typical routine of play that usually ended with the both of them laughing as they ate a sunday.

“OK I gotta go, thanks a million for watching him.” Claire said as he rushed towards the door. “Bye honey.” She called out to Tommy but he was too busy playing with his grandfather to hear her. She smiled as she left, closing the door behind her while the Coach’s Wife was getting their ice cream sundays ready.

“I dunno but I’ve been told. Five year olds are brave and bold.” The Coach sang while Tommy marched around.

Brian reached his car and tried to unlock the door but numerous college students would call out to him and he’d have to stop and wave. It was typical for jocks to get this kind of attention because jocks got the most attention considering he may one day get signed to a deal and make millions.

Brian had a scout coming to the next game and if he played well then he hoped he'd get signed to some team. He hoped The L.A. Lakers would take notice of him but since the Celtics were much closer he figured they may sign him and he'd have to work his way to eventually signing with the Lakers.

He jumped into his far and let out a sigh of relief not that he was finally inside. He thought he’d never manage to get away and some days the attention was too much for him. He was basically shy but since he had talent playing basketball he was often pushed into the introvert’s nightmare. He had to stand out and be seen even though he wanted to be invisible.

He drove home, which was his grandparents house, and parked in the driveway then casually walked towards the house. He glanced at the small shed that he built to store the tools he used when doing his chores. He did everything because his grandparents were too old to maintain the house. He figured he’d hire someone once he had a deal signed so he could take care of them like they had when his parents had died.

His mother had been unfortunate to pass away during childbirth and he was the only born. His father took it very hard and lasted only a few years then later killed himself. His grandparents took him in and they did the best to raise him. His grandfather was a janitor while his grandmother was a homemaker.

They lived a higher low class lifestyle and although they had to do without a lot of stuff they were comfortable and Brian had learned to live without all the latest things that all his friends had. He often wished he was better off but he did not complain and had come to accept it.

He entered the kitchen and searched for some leftovers as he searched the refrigerator. He felt his heart pounding wondering how big a mess he had to clean. He was an hour later than he had originally planned and being late had consequences.

He made a quick sandwich as he flipped on a small 5 inch television they kept in the kitchen. It was nothing fancy and still in black and white but at least he could get a couple of local channels.

“The police are still searching for a local boy that has been missing for the past week. 7 year old Justin Reilly disappeared walking home from school last week. His parents have been desperate to find him and fear that he may be deceased. No ransom note has been delivered so far and the FBI strongly warns the public to keep closer eyes on their children because they feel this is not an isolated incident.

Brian laughed and turned off the TV as he muttered to himself that they’ll probably never find him. He picked up the plate filled with food and walked out towards the shed. The grass was wilting brown and starting to grow long as the end of fall was approaching. He entered the shed and reached down to lift a door in the wooden floor that led to a set of stairs.

He carefully climbed down the stair pulling on lights he had installed to give light as he descended. He had to hold the plate in his arm as he opened a door at the end. He stepped inside a room he built completely made of cement to block any sound trying to escape.

Justin Reilly was tied, spread eagle, to a take and he looked in fear as Brian entered. The 7 year old was completely nude as he looked in terror. His clothes were tossed into a pile in one of the corners they had been cut from the boy as he watched Brian helplessly.

“Please,” the boy whispered for the thousandth time to be released even though Brian was not finished with him yet.

“Did you mess yourself?” Brian asked calmly and the boy shook his head in fear. “Need to use the toilet?” The boy nodded and Brian kept a strong grip on him as he led the boy to a bucket so that he could relieve himself.

Brian had to let out a deep breath because the smell from the boy’s unwashed body was getting too strong for Brian to deal with. He led the boy back to the table and watched the lad scarf down the food he bought. He was getting thin since he only fed his prisoner once a day and once finished he ignored the boy’s cries as he tied him back to the table. He would relieve some stress on the lad by sexually assaulting him before leaving the lad to scream for help in the dark.

Brian would have to begin searching for a place to dump the body while he searched for a new victim to replace Justin. The thought that the FBI was searching made him wonder if he should hold off before abducting a new victim but he had a sick compulsion that seemed to diminish the fear he felt.

After all it was just one more and what was one more compared to the numerous others he had kept as pets. Once the smell became too great he would dump the bodies and begin anew. He left the shed and saw a young man walking down the street. He had a backpack on and walked with his head down. Brian recognized him as a neighbor boy that lived a few streets over. He could not remember Kyle’s name but he had seen him before.

He was 14 or 15 years old and he was a little too old for Brian’s tastes, still he was young enough that he did excite Brian’s tastes the more he thought about him. Brian thought to himself that he had found his new guest to live in the dungeon.

Chris finished tying his sneaker as his best friend Jordan came over. Jordan was partially dressed as he was one of the last people to leave the showers after practice. Chris looked at him and repressed a smirk as he saw the cartoon boxers he wore. They were SpongeBob and Patrick Starfish. Chris remembered watching that cartoon with his brother and Jordan what seemed like a long time ago.

“Cute panties,” Chris remarked and wanted to laugh more at Jordan's expression.

“You keep talkin’ like that an I ain’t gonna do you that favor.” Jordan replied angrily. Chris playfully scratched Jordan under his chin before replying.

“You know I didn’t mean it bro, hey I love you man.” Chris said then a second later they both started laughing.

“Alright, alright, check it I called in some favors and got my sister to agree to a date with Kyle. Do you really think this will turn him,” Jordan whispered for a moment “straight.”

“Yeah once he sees what it’s like to date a girl he’ll stop all this foolishness. Who knows, maybe they’ll have a good time and start dating. It is what you wanted, right? To get your sister to stop dating that punk ass loser she’s with.” Chris said.

“You know it,” Jordan said as he and Chris slapped each other fives.

“Which reminds me I need you to talk to Kyle because he’s been acting weird and was hoping…”

“He’d tell me because he might be ashamed to talk to his brother.” Jordan interrupted.

“He’s always thought of you as a friend and some things…”

“You just can’t tell your brother.” Jordan interrupted again.

“See. It’s like we can read each other’s mind.” Chris remarked. They finished dressing and jumped into Chris’ car as they drove towards Chris’ house. They took the usual paths that Kyle would walk so they could find him.

They found Kyle walking alone with his head down staring at the sidewalk like he usually did. Chris honked his horn and Kyle stopped then climb in the back once he saw it was his brother.

“Hey little man wassup?” Jordan asked as he turned to look at Kyle. He just shrugged but Jordan knew he was hiding something.

“So then why do you look like someone juss kicked you in the balls?” Jordan asked bluntly. Even Chris let out a sigh at the comment as both the Oliver brothers suddenly had a visual from what Jordan said.

“You guys promise not to get mad?” Kyle asked quietly.

“You know I could never be mad at you.” Jordan said as Chris nodded.

“Not me…. someone else.” Kyle said bashfully.

“Ut oh, lay it on me son.” Jordan ordered as he stared at Kyle. Realizing he had no choice he told about how Tyler had locked in in the locker and stopped being his friend.

“Oh really,” Chris said as he quickly turned to look at Kyle. He was angry at Tyler for treating his brother like that.

“You promised you wouldn’t get mad.” Kyle replied.

“We said we wouldn’t get angry at YOU, we never said we wouldn’t get angry at HIM.” Jordan replied then he and Chris looked at each other as they both knew they were gonna get revenge for Kyle together.

Brad rushed to his car and was thankful he had avoided most of the usual attention he received. He wanted to get him because he needed to set up everything so he could end Justin Reilly’s life and move on to the Oliver kid. He had followed Kyle to his house so he could begin plotting how he was gonna capture him unnoticed.

When he climbed inside he started up the car then when he looked out the windshield he saw an envelope placed under a wiper blade. He got out to grab it and climbed back inside. He guessed it was a love letter or from a fan too shy to talk to him in person. He quickly opened it to see what was said.

Dear Brad.

I know you’ve been kidnapping those children! You and I will be speaking soon. I’m sure you don’t want anyone to know about this.

Signed,

A Friend

Brad shook as he read it wondering who it was that knew. What was it they wanted? To blackmail him? Not that he had any money to pay. He needed to hurry home and get rid of the evidence just in case. He knew the perfect place to dump Justin’s body.

Mr. P shivered and saw a small burst of mist escape his lips and he looked around confused then suddenly realized he was in a freezer of sorts. Even with the coat he wore the cold seemed to sink into his bones. He rubbed his hands together to get them warn as his mind swirled in a haze
