Jack walked along the busy markets, ducking between the stalls and the customers. He was trying to buy some fruit for his younger sisters’ hatchday, and he soon approached the stall he was looking for.

“Hello young Jack.” An elderly moon dragoness greeted him. “Your late.”

“I’m early, and you know it.” Jack smiled.

The stall keeper smiled and shook her head, before handing him a bag and exchanging it with a few coins.

“How’s business?” Jack asked.

“It’s been good, but my supplier seems to be running low lately, something about caravan attacks.”

Jack nodded. “The king needs to work on that.”

“That he does, that he does.”

“Alright, see you around.”

“Bye.”

Jack waved, then turned and made his way back home. The streets went from bustling and full to quiet and empty as he walked past a moon dragon district. Moon dragons slept during the day while sun dragons slept during the night. The stall keeper was the only moon dragon Jack had ever met that stayed up during the day. He made his way past the sleeping houses, and eventually reached his district. Jack and his family lived in the eastern guard’s district. His family had been guards for many generations, and he was proud to say he was one too. Currently, he was on reserve, so he was paid to be ready at any moment. His family made do with Jack’s and his mother’s salaries, they didn’t do great, but they did fine. As he approached his home, Jack noticed his sister laying on the balcony. Amy was from the same clutch as him, and they shared similar looks, while May and Jennifer were from a different clutch, and looked very different. Amy was the most beautiful dragoness in the district, and many others too. Many drakes tried to court her, but she usually refused them. Jack was told he looked a lot like his father, strong and handsome, but he always thought he wasn’t anything special.

“Hey sis, whatcha doing?” Jack asked as he walked up to his home.

“Just enjoying the sun, it’s warm today.”

Jack nodded. “Well, don’t be out too long, you might catch some attention.”

Amy chuckled. “Nothing I can’t handle.”

Jack walked into his home, and set the bag on the kitchen table.

“May! Jennifer!” He called. “Come get your present.”

May, a bright yellow dragon, walked out of her shared room and smiled at Jack.

“Hey.”

“Happy thirteenth hatchday. Where’s mom?” Jack asked.

“She got called out.”

Jennifer, a pale white dragon, rushed out and dove into the bag.

“Thank you thank you.” She smiled as she pulled out a handful of strawberries.

“Happy hatchday Jennifer.” Jack replied.

“Mom left a note.” May told them. “She says happy hatchday, sorry she couldn’t make it, but to go on and have fun anyway.”

Jack nodded. “What do you want to do today?”

“I want to go to the party tonight.” Jennifer told him

Jack raised an eyebrow. “The ball? Really?”

Both sisters nodded enthusiastically.

“Do you have clothes?”

They nodded again.

Jack rubbed the back of his neck. “Well, alright, I’ll see if I can score us a handful of invites.”

They squealed in delight, then May turned to him.

“You also need to dress up nicely, why don’t you use one of Dad’s old suits? They should fit you.”

Jack felt a pang in his heart. Amy and Jennifer were six when their father died, they don’t remember him like he and Amy do, due to being five years older.

“Yeah, maybe.”

The girls rushed back into their room to discuss their night plans while Jack walked up and joined his other sister on the balcony.

“So.” Amy spoke first.

“So, they want to go to that ball, so I guess that’s what we’re doing.”

Amy smiled. “Looks like I got to break out my party dress.”

Jack chuckled. “Yep.”

“What about you?”

“May thought I should wear one of Dad’s suits.”

“That’s why Mom kept them; you look a lot like him.”

“Yeah, she would be happy to see me wearing them.”

“You gonna get a date?”

Jack shot over to look at her. “Me? No.”

“Why not? I don’t need one, Jennifer and May are too young, but you would look nice with a date.”

Jack blushed. “I have no idea who to ask.”

“What about Judy? From school?”

“She’s nice, but not to me.”

Amy nodded. “We really need to get you a girlfriend.”

Jack looked out at the view from their balcony.

“Maybe you could meet someone at the dance then.” Amy sighed.

“Maybe, but this isn’t for me, it’s for our sisters. It’s their hatchday.”

Amy chuckled. “They’ve been trying to get you a girlfriend for years, nothing would make them happier.”

Jack looked up at the massive building before him, the mansion in front of him was reserved for public events, after the king seized it from a royal who betrayed him. The invitations weren’t too expensive, so Jack was able to dip a little bit into his savings to buy six of them. He had spent hours polishing his scales and readying himself, and now his black suit matched his pale-yellow body. His cloak covered his wings, and he had bought a pale-yellow rose and placed it on his chest. His younger sisters giggled excitedly as they walked into the ballroom, and immediately rushed off to explore and dance.

“Hey.” Jack called. “Meet back up in two hours.”

Amy smiled, and looked around. “Nice décor this time.”

Jack turned back to her. “Yeah, I would agree.”

The last time they had been there was about a year ago, and it was in celebration of some royal dragoness. Everything had been pink then, and it clashed with everybody’s scales.

“Look at you, you certainly fill a suit now.” Amy added. “People are already watching us.”

“Watching you more like it.” Jack replied.

“Those girls over there are definetly watching you.” Amy told him.

Jack glanced over and noticed a group of girls looking over at him and giggling.

“Are those royals?”

“I think so, look at that jewelry.”

Amy had been given an elaborate and fancy necklace by one of her suitors, and was wearing it now, but all Jack had was a solid band of gold that he had been given by his father. The dragonesses were nearly covered in diamonds and other fancy gems. Jack flashed a smile at them, and they giggled and whispered more.

“I’m going to go find somebody to dance with.” Amy told him.

“You mean, sit alone and wait for somebody to ask?”

“Exactly.” Amy smiled and walked away.

Jack stood next to a wall and watched his younger sisters for a while. At least they were having fun with dragons their age.

“Are they yours?” A moon dragon asked him when he noticed Jack.

“My sisters.” Jack answered.

The moon dragon nodded. “Mark, nice to meet you.”

“Jack, same.”

“Where’s your parents? Have they sponsored them?”

“I sponsored them, my mothers at work and my fathers…” Jack trailed off.

“I understand, I lost my mother not long after I hatched, she didn’t die, but she left.”

They stood there for a moment, watching the party.

“You with anybody?” Jack asked.

“Not really, my father forced me to come here, and I think my brother is here too, but I haven’t seen him.” Mark answered.

Jack nodded. “It’s their hatchday, and they wanted to come.”

Mark nodded. “My dad wants me to meet someone, and find a mate, but I’d rather go to another city, explore the world and such.”

“Do you work?”

“Night guard, officer class, you?”

“Day guard, reserve captain in training.”

“Captain in training? Lucky.”

“My dad was one.”

“Mine’s a general, but he wanted me to start at the bottom.”

Mark scanned the crowd, and he froze when he saw Amy.

“Woah, she’s beautiful.”

“Who?”

“That sun dragoness over there.”

“Oh, her? She’s my sister.”

Mark’s eyes widened. “Really? Wow, she has royal prospects.”

Jack rolled his eyes. “If she ever decided on a suitor.”

“One would say she looks like a princess, if we have ever seen one.”

“Why does the king hide her? I never understood that. We don’t even know her name, he refuses to tell it to us.”

“Only her servants and a few princes have seen her, the king is way to overprotective.”

Jack shook his head. “The future of our kingdom, and we’ve never even seen her.”

Aurora walked through the halls; her jewelry clinked against her scales as she moved. Her dress flowing over her pure white body. She entered the throne room, and saw her father talking to some random royal Aurora didn’t care about. She regarded them in silence, as the royal, most likely a prince, scanned her up and down. She rolled her eyes and took her place next to the throne.

“Aurora dear, meet Prince Lance, your future mate.” Her father spoke.

The princess nearly choked. “What?”

“You are to be mated to him, to ally with his kingdom.” The king replied.

“Which kingdom?”

“The Emerald Kingdom, his sister is mating into the Jade Kingdom, your mother’s kingdom. This will create a strong alliance.”

Aurora looked over at the prince, who smiled at her. He seemed nice, but also clueless and egotistical, and Aurora wanted nothing to do with someone she never met.

“I told you I wanted to mate within the kingdom.” She turned back to her father.

“But there aren’t many royals that aren’t related to you within the kingdom, so we must spread our alliances. The Ruby Kingdom is increasing it’s pressure on us, and we need more power to avoid a war.”

“We’re already allied with the Jade kingdom, isn’t that enough?”

“Sadly not, and your cousins want a stronger tie before devoting their armies for us.”

Aurora shook her head, and stormed out of the hall.

“You will be mated first thing tomorrow.” The king called.

Aurora rushed through the hall, stomped into her room, and slammed the door behind her. She rushed to remove a stone from the wall, revealing a hidden compartment she had made. She pulled out a bag of gold coins, a dagger, and a necklace. The dagger and necklace were from her mother, and she quickly swapped the necklace with her old ones. She put the dagger and the bag in her storage, and quickly shrugged off her dress. After a few hours, she poked her head out of her room, and looked around. There was a guard posted at the end of the hall, but he didn’t see her. The moon dragon appeared to be reading from a book, as he was allowed to do, and had yet to see the small white horns poke from the door. Aurora watched the silver dragon for a while, before she pulled her head back and closed the door. She walked over to the wall behind her bed, she slowly pushed in a stone, and stepped back as a secret entrance opened. She wasn’t supposed to know about the secret, because it was for emergencies only, but she had found it while she was painting her room, and used it every once in a while, to watch her people. Aurora stepped through the wall, and closed the door behind her. She quickly rushed through the tunnel, going down stairs and making her way to a secret exit from the palace. She rushed out into an empty square, and ducked behind a stall as a few moon guards walked past her. She turned and rushed away from the palace as fast as she could. The smile on her face grew as she felt her freedom, and she started to run. Her joyous run was quickly cut short as she ran into a sun dragon.

“Umph.” The sun dragon groaned as she ran straight into him.

“Oh, I’m so sorry, are you okay?” Aurora asked him.

“I’m fine, just a bruise.”

“What is a sun dragon doing up at this time of night?”

“I was walking home from a ball, but I should be asking you.”

Aurora took this moment to look the sun dragon up and down. He was a nice pale-yellow color, and he was wearing a suit that made him look quite handsome. Aurora noticed a band of gold around his neck, and realized he must be a higher guard.

“I just got fired from my job.” She told him.

“You’re not a royal?” The dragon looked surprised.

“No, I worked and lived in the palace, but the princess ran away, and the king fired us all.”

Just then, bells rang from the palace, and Aurora smiled at the timing.

“The princess ran away? Why?” The drake asked.

“Something about being mated to a suitor she didn’t like.”

“If you’re not a royal, why do you have that necklace?”

Her paws shot up to her neck, and she touched the pendant.

“It was given as a gift to my mother for her service.”

The drake nodded. “I didn’t catch your name.”

“A… Aurora.”

“Jack, do you have anywhere to go?”

Aurora shook her head. “I’ve never been outside the palace, and I have no family.”

Jack nodded. “Where will you go then?”

“I was thinking about staying at an inn for a few days, I have some money I saved up, then I can get a job somewhere.”

“Why don’t you stay with me and my family.” Jack replied.

Aurora stepped back, surprised. “I don’t want to be more of a problem then I already have.”

Jack waved a paw. “Nonsense, I live with three sisters and my mom, they would be happy to take you in until you’re on your feet.”

Aurora nodded. “Alright, but I should pay you, at least for the food.”

Jack was going to protest, but stopped when he received a stern look from Aurora.

“Follow me.” He smiled.

They made their way through the city, Aurora was amazed at all the sights, and gasped often at things she had never seen before.

“Never been outside the palace? Really?” Jack asked.

Aurora shrugged. “My mom was a maid and my dad was a guard, they raised me to be one of the princess’ servants.”

Jack nodded. “My home isn’t far; we might have some food if you’re hungry.”

Aurora realized that she missed dinner because she was supposed to be having it with that stupid prince.

“I haven’t eaten dinner yet.” She admitted.

“My mom might have something by the time we get there. I sent my sisters ahead so I could talk with a friend, so she likely made food for them.”

Aurora nodded. “You have three sisters?”

“Yeah, two clutches of two. Amy, is from the same clutch as me, May and Jennifer are from the younger one, it’s their hatchday actually.”

“Oh, good for them.”

They made their way past a moon dragon district, and Aurora smiled as she watched the many dragons walk back and forth, she looked over and noticed a few dragons playing instruments. The moon dragons nodded to them as they paced, full of smiles and life, and Aurora couldn’t help but feel sad as she walked into a quiet living district. A few lights were still on in some of the windows, and they approached a house and Jack opened the door.

“Come on in.”
