By choice

Thank god i wouldn't.

I managed to teach myself how to enjoy the sex, how to enjoy the people, how to make the most of the shit around me. Life got a little interesting.

But it wasn't quite life. I never went outside, never came to live like a human should. But that's changing now.

“I'll miss you!" said Mr slimy.

No matter. I stepped into the bulletproof tinted-window faux-taxi. I was in the back, on the opposite side from Chad. Diagonally from the driver, on the left side of the car.

The leading werewolf stepped into the passenger seat. He'd been the one to manage us.

He began his monologue.

“I have two copies of the standard smuggler's waiver. I ask that you sign all the pages."

“The first thing you agree to is to waive all responsibility for the 'portal lobotomy'; an incredibly rare phenomenon that affects an almost-irrelevant handful of werewolves passing through the portal in which the frontal lobe is replaced with that of a plant. You will most likely not be affected, seeing as you're both human."

“The second thing you agree to is not to leave the vehicle at any of the service stations we may be inclined to stop at. You will be responsible in the case you are shot; you'll still be in southern territory."

“Third thing. Tell nobody of the werewolf world. Don't even try. As far as it goes, it's fictional. You could be killed by the implant."

“Fourth thing. The portal is guarded by 20 guards of both sides. Do not converse with them for you will be held responsible and financially liable if the explosive in their brains takes this as a violation of their terms of employment."

“As for the other rules, they're relatively minor and i trust you'll understand them, even in legalese."

I signed all the pages. A lot of weird and almost too-specific rules. _I don't give a fuck as long as i get to go back._

“Signed", i said, handing it to them. Chad did likewise.

Slowly, at first, through the streets of the city. Then, quickly, as we hit the motorways. Then _very quickly_.

This was the only time i got to ride on the motorways and actually see the scenery. The occasional suburb rushed past but then it was mostly fields. They were all yellowish-green as they zipped past. But then it was wilderness. _Wilderness, true wilderness._

_How can they hate humans so much yet have such a developed road system?_

We passed through to the interior of the country. “The population density here is basically 0.", said our escort. I remember being to a different low-density place. I'd been there once, by bus, passing just past Lleida towards Madrid. There were barely any human settlements save for the infrequent stone box in the middle of some yellowish field.

Here, though, put that into absolute shame. Past the fence on the motorway was unkempt landscapes. Literally no organised society stuff existed. It was simply wild pine forest, slowly shifting.

“It's kind of shocking", i said. “Do they seriously leave the land like this?"

“Yeah, one million isn't enough to settle a place the size of _Spain_", said the passenger-guide werewolf. “So they just abandon it in lieu of some fields near the main towns. You know Spain, don't you? The biggest country in Europe besides Russia and Ukraine, maybe France."

And yeah, the way i put it in my head, one million simply wasn't enough; there were enough for two main cities, a handful of towns, and maybe some farmers.

So, we passed through the country. Then, we slowed down, and took an exit. We pulled down to the “more reasonable" 150 km/h i could glance from the speedometer, and went on a single-lane road into desert.

We reached a gate in a fence, passed it. Another gate, a wire-fence. Another gate, in a two-werewolf-height-sized fence with double barbed wire atop.

A booth by the side of the road. Plenty more fences ahead of us.

The window rolled down and a uniformed person spoke to the driver. “What come you for?"

It was a strange accent, somewhat tainted by a Hispanic influence yet mostly standard southern.

“As per the government's 'remove humans' act"

“Bribe evidence?"

The guy of the passenger suit produced a card and passed it to the driver, who showed it to the booth-man.

We moved, towards more fences, more gates, each somehow even larger.

Bigger and bigger signs, warning that this was a military area and you'd need a _very_ good reason to get in. The government was so hellbent on communicating this there were signs in Northern Spanish, regular Spanish, and English. But we passed one final one. A booth was next to us.

And a gate, a dense gate. A sliding one. No handles.

The car-doors were opened and we were guided into a ward, us two, alone. I almost began talking with Chad, but a medic came in, a human. “Ok, so here's the deal: to go through the portal, you need to take in the anti-information implant."

Chad reeled. “What?!"

“As per our official instruction from the geezers in charge; take this implant to be allowed into the human world."

“Offical from whom?", i asked.

“The authorities controlling whether you leave the werewolf world today", said the medic.

“Fine", i said. Chad repeated my sentiment.

“Ok, so the implant's really quite simple. It goes into the skull, and then controls thoughts. You won't ever have the temptation to discuss the werewolf world, and if it does arrive, any attempts to act upon it will be quietly prevented", the medic said. “Those of you with ADHD may find these symptoms similar to executive dysfunction. As a helpful side effect, your focus and ability to act upon it will be improved."

Sounds good so far.

“Legally, as per UN human rights, we need to tell you that if you do really try, you risk the possibility of an explosion. It'll kill you instantly."

And fuck, that was our problem.

“If you're in and wish to proceed, sign this sheet. If not, move to the 'werewolf world return processing' room."

Chad almost moved to stand up, but then stopped. I saw his body moving as he breathed for a few seconds. It was a moment's trepidation.

He sat back down, and beckoned for the paper.

He signed. I got a different sheet, skimmed over it, and signed it, too.

The medic took the papers and gave us both masks. "When you wake up, you'll be back in the car. I suggest you try the implant as its most destructive capabilities are disabled right now.

I put the mask on. I counted back from 10 as many people did. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, _why isn't it acting_ 5, 4-

* * *

I ask that you please _understand_ that this _is_ a work of fiction and that any resemblance to anything IRL is _coincidental_. The werewolf world does not exist. It _does not_, _will not_, and _has never_.

This is ALL fictional. Please. Because if you get the wrong impression…

* * *

Backseat of the car, slumped over. Onto chad,…? I blinked several times to accustom myself to this new dark environment.

“Oh, spikey-signature-guy, you're awake. Tell me about the werewolf world. Tell me _everything_."

Well, it was split in two, the north and the south. “The werewolf world…? It's entirely fictional, a spur of the imagination."

That's not what i had wanted to say.

“I have reason to believe it's real", said the werewolf. The _werewolf_. Yes, i can tell.

“Yeah, i meant to say that the werewolf world is split in two, but, er it's _entirely fictional_, so, like, that fact doesn't matter."

"You seem to be being mind-controlled."

"No… i'm not. I can easily say it's true."

“But we both know you're lying."

“Yes."

My mouth was speaking not the words i had in my head. Ok, that's boring.

“Ok then, i won't bother you anymore."

But this implant…! ew! It was controlling my actions. I hate this!

“What if, say, i remove it?", i asked, in curiosity. “What if i decide i _really fucking hate_ it?"

“You die. It manipulates the brain chemicals and without it, you won't be able to do _any_ kind of thought or action. Say bye to your heartbeat!"

Ugh. How sad.

Eh, IDRC.

Chad woke up and went through the same steps. I could see a look of horror on his face as he realised just where he'd gone.

And a gate was opened.

I saw the portal in front of us. it was a stone frame as tall as a lorry and as wide as one of the motorway carriageways. Within it was an image of the other side. We were buffeted by a consistent breeze. A warmish breeze, maybe.

_Wyoming, in the land of freedom. Fuck… the visa and identity processes are going to be so complicated._

We drove through. There was one peculiar detail. The signs and text around me were in Spanish, or at least some kind of obsuficated English. It wasn't Northen Spanish by any means.

And wait, there were several translations. French, German, Italian…? Some Cyrillic, i think, newly added… it had “i" and “ï", though.

“You are now in the EU. You will be provided with a UN-administered pass to allow you to return to your respective countries of citizenship", began the tour guide. “You will also be provided with a valid bus ticket to Lleida and 150 euros to communicate with family and arrange transport to your respective homes. We suggest those of you from the UK, like mr spikey-signature here, get educated on the 'Brexit' situation and how entry to the country has changed."

We both were given a piece of paper and those classic brown €50 banknotes. I felt a little pang of horror at having the money passed to me. _Negative conditioning, fukc the brothel._

“Are we in Spain?", i asked. “I thought there was just the Wyoming portal…?"

“One in Wyoming and a handful others so the werewolves don't die of lack of supplies."

Fuck, this was going to be complicated. I forgot just how obsessed Earth could get with identity and cross-country movement.

I could imagine one of my newer colleagues, Mr New, making his way north. He wouldn't need to faff with these ID documents and shit and all the weird rules and regulations. No, he'd just take the free movement for granted. And with the speed they went, it'd only take 2 hours to cover the some-800-kilometers. He had the easy way out, no doubt.

And we drove a little way out of the “zona militar" (not the “bellatorus askarill" we had entered), to enter a small village.

“Your journey with us ends here", said our tour guide.

And thank god it did.

**Stay tuned for** _ **La Tramuntana** _**, a new series where Newbie (renamed as Jinner) comes to manage a northen brothel.**

* * *

Some notes:

- Name changes
 - Mr Slim ? Slim Joe
 - Mr New ? Newbie

- The explosives in the brains of the guards is inspired by Bakuda from Worm. Eurgh, nightmare fuel.
- I've driven between Zaragoza and Lledia for a holiday once. It's pretty damn empty there. I have an image from street view if you seek to see what Muscle Mike is comparing this to. Just imagine forest, deep, wild forest. To let others know would lead to the explosive in their heads destroying the offender and anyone unlucky enough to be around.
- Ok how on earth did i turn werewolf smut into dystopian nightmare fuel possibly speculative fiction within 60 thousand words…?!
- I've written LTp1 and let me tell you, Newbie does _not_ have that easy of a way out. At least Muscle Mike is somewhat familiar with just how earth manages the endless “you can only enter this country on these conditions" rules. Newbie is new to the Werewolf World and just what can happen on the ways north and south.
- And yes, just like Alexander, Muscle Mike comes into the werewolf world before Brexit. That's going to be a nasty suprise to someone just trying to go back home

* * *
