I was feeling pretty burnt out and needed to let off some steam","content":"I can’t transcend my flesh\n\nI have a meeting tomorrow at 9\n\nNo time for deeper introspection\n\nWhen the quarter ends this month\n\n  \n\nI think often of conversations\n\nLate night confessionals with the trappings of ritual\n\nWhere I briefly glimpse some higher truth\n\nBefore it dances out of my perception\n\n  \n\nIt’s by design, of course it is\n\nGod forbid there is a moment of peace\n\nThe deadlines march ever onward, steadfast and resolute\n\nWhich line was it, exactly, that gave up my spirit?\u0026nbsp;\n\n  \n\nI struggle, often, to explain my religion\n\nThe oddball intricacies of a personal revelation\n\nI am too cowardly to touch\n\nInstead, I search for understanding that will not come\n\n  \n\nI took a detour on my usual walk\n\nAs I heard something call out to me\n\nDeep within a copse of trees\n\nJust down the hill with the sign that read\n\n“No Trespassing”\n\n  \n\nI stepped into the circle and was overcome\n\nThe spirals of green and the strange\n\nTwisting growth of the old trees fascinate\n\nUnbidden, the words come to my lips\n\n  \n\n“I know I am not welcome.\n\nI take no pictures, only memories.”\n\n  \n\nI couldn’t take a picture, even if I wanted\n\nI left my phone in the car\n\nPeculiar, isn’t it?\n\nHow could I have known in advance?\n\nOn the way to the grove, I saw a dog\n\nAll white and fluffy like a living snowbank\n\nLater, I saw their twin\n\nA black lab lazing in the sun, guarding a pool\n\n  \n\nAm I silly for seeing signs that are not there?\n\nFor trying to interpret the calm and peace as other?\n\nBut I suppose, when you have run from it long enough\n\nRest is a foreign god you are not ready to know","series":{"name":"Poetry","previous":"https://fse.anthro.fr/stories/2105233-binding-promise.json","next":"https://fse.anthro.fr/stories/2188152-october-the-beautiful.json"}}
