A seven-and-a-half-foot tall silver and black humanoid machine. Its hands are omni-tools that can shift and change to fit what is desired and needed, it shifts and changes to meet the needs of the next task. It grabs a large metal drum, picking it up from a drop pod, moving it over to recently built structures. Standing nearby as all this takes place is a medium build woman with tanned skin. She brushes some of her long flowing white hair away from her blue eyes, allowing her to type onto a floating holographic computer display where she inputs indiscernible data.

“Heat coefficients are within expected parameters. Power usage is a little high, but not outside of what is acceptable. Reaction time and fluidity of motion is what is to be expected. Not encountering a lot of major bugs. Okay, you are right Mephia. We could have the base setup for the first stage colonists by the end of the month,” she says, looking at the large machine that stops and hisses, the chest opening up, revealing a lithe tanned skin woman.

Her dark brown mid back length hair out of the way, making sure none of it is caught on the machinery that surrounded her. She leaps from the machine’s internals which automatically close up, leaving the large mech suit idle, “I told you Miyuki. We can do pathfinder work and test out your new gal without interruption,” she says, adjusting her glasses, looking up at the machine, brown eyes focused on it for a moment, “This makes everything we have to do a breeze.”

“There’s still plenty to test. The liquid nanite repair systems need to be tested, but I don’t want to purposely damage Jessy. The clearing of the surrounding area and protecting the future colonists from the local wildlife. We are lucky that the micro-biology here is so benign with a near perfect Earth-like atmosphere. The audio barriers are keeping many of the larger beasts away, but that’s only a temporary solution. Some studies have indicated that the animals might be wilder and attack the audio barriers to stop the noise rather than be turned away from it.”

Mephia smirks, patting her on the back, “Relax. That was only in a what? Three percent of the target animals? That’s hardly a thing to worry about. We, us together, there is _nothing_ that we can’t do.”

“Which is why you volunteered us for this pathfinder mission without asking me,” she states with a little look.

“Come on now. As you admitted just moments ago. I am right that this was a brilliant idea.”

“It was good, but I wouldn’t say brilliant. But despite my reservations, this has been very productive.”

“Oh, come on, give me a little more credit. I thought this through when I suggested we go on this mission,” she says, giving her a hug and a kiss on the cheek.

“I am, this is why I am letting you kiss me after the stunt you pulled,” she replies, returning the kiss, giving her lover a little squeeze, “Come, it’s getting late and we should get some dinner.”

“Late it still feels mid-day,” she replies.

“Thirty-hour days will throw you off. I’ll make some pasta.”

“How can I say no to that,” she replies, following her into the temporary structure that by any other metric but their own looks far from temporary in appearance. Six rooms, a fully functional bathroom with shower and tub configuration, a kitchen, dining room, living quarters, and a recreational room. The wonders of technology that makes this ‘roughing’ it is something to behold.

Sometime later, sitting at the table big enough for four, enjoying the end of their meal when a siren suddenly blares. Mephia stands, knocking their chair down, “A breach?! I’ll handle this!” she exclaims.

Miyuki pulls out her datapad, tapping on it, bringing up a holographic display, the northern forest audio fence is down. That’s where the more aggressive wildlife has been spotted. The underground wiring appears to be undamaged, but that is far outside of our communication range. We’ve yet to solve the problem with the interference this planet has with communications,” she huffs.

“That just means I need to get the materials needed and repair the system before too many of them wander into the area. The longer we wait the harder it will be to deal with the problem. I’m going to suit up, get the supplies I’ll need, and I’ll head there.”

“If you go that far with Jessy, I won’t be able to monitor you or provide any aid. You’ll be out there on your own.”

“We don’t have time to talk about this. It’s the only one and it can take on those creatures _and_ repair the audio barrier. The longer we wait the worse it’ll be.”

Miyuki tenses, “We could call in aid.”

“And risk more than the people it will take to re-secure the barrier and clear out the landing zone for the future colony. It’ll be also risking the credibility of your research and your project. Your good name. I can’t simply sit here and wait for it to work out.”

She gently rubs her arm, looking away, “But what if you get hurt. I can’t risk you for my own gain. I can’t live with myself if I do that.”

Mephia steps up gives her a big hug, “You’re not. This is my decision,” she responds, taking a step back, “Look, if things get heated, I’ll head back and we can do what you said as a fall back plan. But without trying we’ll never know.”

She swallows a lump in her throat, staring into her eyes, “I’ll get the equipment. Boot up Jessy and make sure everything is operating nominally.”

“I was just in her. It’ll be fine,” she responds, rushing out and back to the machine.

Miyuki lets out a soft sigh, “I could never stop you when you put your mind to it,” she rushes to get the spare audio screener.

Mephia approaches the large mech suit, “Open Sesame Bun,” she commands, the mech suit opening with a soft hiss and whir, the smooth red interior of the suit revealed once more. She slips into the machine, leaning against the cushion which provides protection as well as comfort. Arms slipping into the slots, tapping into the hidden keyboard that is by the palm, entering a passcode while state, “Activate J-E-S-I, passcode Eros.”

The machine hums to live, she slips her hand into the glove that controls the right hand of the machine as he hears, in a synthetic emotionless voice, **“Greetings User. M-E-P-H-I-A.”**

“Jessy, quick start up, bypass all safety checks. Prepare for immediate departure to sector seven. Use local terrain makers to update location. Mark this as a highest priority repair mission.”

**“Affirmative, bypassing all safety protocols. High priority repair mission.”**

“Good,” she replies, the machine enclosing her into its body. A holographic HUD shows a perfect view of the world around her like it isn’t even a machine around her. There is data read out and constantly updating target on the HUD on whatever she is focusing on. Which is soon Miyuki, carting in a replacement speaker for the audio barrier.

The HUD displays basic information about her, along with data relating to the machine, **“Creator. Important. Mechanic. Valuable. Protect.”**

_“I wonder what she reads me as… but then I’m always the one wearing her,”_ Mephia thinks, grabbing the items with ease, “Thank you Miyuki. I won’t take long.”

“If it gets dangerous, you come back here, you hear?” she says with nervousness in voice, looking up to her, managing to look Mephia right in the eyes.

She smiles as if Miyuki can see her, “I will. If I get into trouble, I’ll head right back.”

“Good,” she replies, gently holding her arm, “And Mephia?”

“Yes?”

“Good luck.”

She smirks, “Thanks,” she replies, running toward her destination.

“And don’t do anything too fancy either while in her Mephia!” Miyuki exclaims through the intercom.

“I won’t, just my normal routine.”

“That i… wh…. id…f” is all that Mephia can hear as she gets out of range.

_“Unless they solve the long-distance communication problems, this planet will never be considered first rate habitable planet despite all the rest it has going for it,”_ she thinks, moving through the alien trees that are green as back home, perhaps even more so, despite the strange arrangement and alien biome can give. It takes a good twenty-five minutes moving at near full speed, bobbing and weaving through the trees to get to the target destination.

She slows down as she gets closer on the lookout for any hostile creatures, **“Warning. Potentially Hostile Wildlife detected. Proceed with caution,”** Jessy reports to her.

Mephia looks around, “Where?”

**“Thirty degrees to your right.”**

She looks, noticing it's only an audio signature of one of the larger local creatures, “That’s not close. Ignore for now. Only warn of greater threats.”

**“Affirmative. Settings updated.”**

“I don’t need a constant alarm to go off as I am working,” she remarks, making her way to the target. There they see the audio device, set up to blend into a tree, but its been bent and damaged, stomped on. Mephia sighs, “It did do a number on this one. Good thing she gave me a full spare. All I have to do is disconnect this one to the power and install the new one, synchronize it with the others and we’ll be back on track,” she mutters to herself, working through, taking apart the old machine. The hands shifting and changing to the tools that are required as required by simply staring at the parts needed to be worked on. The machine’s intuitive nature helps her make the process rather ‘quick’ even if it's complicated.

“Connect the blue wire to the blue wire,” she remarks, while humming to help the time pass by quicker and keep her focus, “Now all I need to do is turn it on… run some diagnostics before connecting it to the network to synchronize with the other barrier points and we’ll be done,” she mutters, working diligently through each step.

**“Audio system is now active,”** the suit states.

“Now to calibrate it so work in sync with the barrier… this will only take a few minutes and I’ll be done. Simple and nothing to worry about,” she mutters.

Without warning she is thrown forward hard against the ‘tree’ the HUD showing moments of static as there’s a massive, long horn shoved right into the audio device, destroying it, **“Hostile life in close proximity detected. Serious damage to systems detected. Damage to occupant detected,”** reports Jessy.

Mephia coughs, the moment of shock passing quickly realizing the horn as gone right through the mech and her to get to the audio device. With several hard elbows into the creature’s face hitting, it into its dark void-like eye, it jerks and throws her and the mech off its horn sending her flying into a nearby tree with a heavy thud.

“Pain is not an option here,” she grunts, getting back onto her feet to stare the creature down. It grunts and growls, showing its long sharp teeth, its series of horns, the largest of which is covered in synthetic fluid and blood. Easily two and a half times her size in suit it comes barreling toward her at full speed.

Only sheer determination and using the tree to cause the creature to slam and splinter itself against it, does she get the upper hand, gouging out one of its eyes before it has taken enough punishment to retreat, leaving Mephia and Jessy even more battered. Mephia pants heavily, finding it difficult to breath but still manages to yell out, “Yeah, you run! And don’t come back!” she stumbles forward toward the damaged audio box, noticing it is beyond repair.

**“Systems have experienced critical damage.”**

“I know… and so have I,” she remarks, coughing up blood, “And it's damaged, we need to fix this… and get me some help,” she coughs, feeling the sting of the machine’s synthetic fluids oozing into her gaping wound in her gut.

**“Initiating nanite repair.”**

“If you can repair me that would be great,” she chuckles, before tensing, coughing more, the adrenaline rush fading, the heat and throb of the hole in her gut.

**“Acknowledged. Preparing to repair.”**

“Yes, yes I heard you already,” she remarks, panting heavily, trying to put pressure on her side due to instinct but in reality it does nothing. She tenses, feeling a sting and tingle around her wound, “Damn it…” she remarks, coughing, feeling a sudden burn around the wound that steadily spreads from the wound. She looks down the light within the suit barely able to show a glimmer from her torso, eyes widening noticing the silver nanite paste is seeping into her wound.

“Jessy what is going on?” she says, tensing, feeling the burning sensation spread from the wound and then grow numb, while the fire sensation spreads outwards from the wound.

**“Repairs in progress, please wait.”**

Mephia’s eyes widen, “Repairs? Your nanites are seeping into my body!”

**“Repairs in progress, please wait.”**

“Jessy! Abort!” she exclaims, feeling the spread, a tingle running through her. She looks down noticing her body turning into a nanite paste that is mixing and combining with the suit, sliding across her belly, crossing her spine, causing her to lose all sensation with her legs like flipping a switch. Each breath becomes hard to do. A surreal sensation of being converted from organic flesh into countless micro-machines.

**“Repairs in progress. Please wait.”**

“N-no, s-stop! I c-command you to st-op!” she says, her voice growing weaker, the border of fire and the sensation of nothing less spreading upwards, across her belly, up the chest, heart pounding faster, faster, head pounding.

**“Repairs in progress. Please state command for emergency to abort progress.”**

_“Right, I have to say the abort, it's not too late!”_ she thinks, opening her mouth to speak but feeling nothing come out. Her tongue running across her lips, mouth open, moving, trying to say the command yet nothing comes out. _“Speak… speak damn you!”_

It was too late. The conversion of her organic body into machine has reached her lungs, there was no longer air going moving through to make a noise. The pounding in her head disappears, as the chest is consumed and a flood of nothingness is now from her neck and below, _“I’m going to…”_ she thinks, nothing but a head now, just minutes left for her mind, feeling the crawl of the machines consume and convert.

**“No abort command detected. Repairs in progress, please wait.”**

_“It can’t end like this… No, no, no,”_ she thinks, the feeling the last vestiges of her body become transformed, the nanites crawling across her face, back of her head, enveloping her into a sea of black and nothingness, the sensation of touch, sound, taste, smell, stripped away as the nanites move on in, taking and converting everything.

_“No, this can’t be. I must…”_

**_“Repair in progress. Please wait,”_** Jessy states the words connecting to Mephia’s mind as it's processed and transitioned.
