The Radio

With a click, the radio powered on, the announcer in mid sentence.

“…eather today. Temperatures will begin to fall in the low forties at night, and during the day, though it'll be sunny, the breeze coming from the ocean will make sure it's chilly during the day as well. Be sure to stay tuned as we continue rolling the hits!"

The announcer's voice gave way to an energetic jazz tune while the twins, April and May, finally got started on unpacking. The pair were inseparable. They went to the same college, graduated with the same degree, and were currently working at the same place. Of course, over the years, it had caused confusion for everyone around them. April being confused for May. May being confused for April. It seemed to be a never-ending struggle for everyone besides the pair.

Regardless, not wanting to be apart, the feline sisters had bought a house together; a little place on top of Snake Hill in Beverly. After signing the paperwork for the deed, they spent the last few days moving everything in. Today was the first day where both of them weren't scheduled to work and neither had any previous plans. It was the perfect day to get the household in order.

“Thank you for getting the radio set up, May. Music always helps to soothe my weary soul."

May light danced over to April, replying, “You're most welcome, sister. Come now, help me sort these books onto the shelves. Once we finish, we can have a little lunch, then we can work on sorting the kitchen after we clean up."

For the next several hours, the pair happily talked and sorted, laughed and organized, all while the radio played. Before long, a knock came from the front door.

“Oh! That must be the milk delivery! I'm ready for lunch!"

Before May could reply, April was already dashing for the door, her hunger briefly overriding her concern for anything that May might say.

As April entered the foyer, April stopped briefly to straighten out her dress before opening the oak door leading out to the porch. Something about this milk man had caught April's attentions. With a quick sigh, April pulled the door open.

“Oh Mike! You're a bit early today."

The male Coyote grinned, answering, “Indeed I am, Ms. April. Figured you could use these bottles pretty quick, just having moved in." Mike bent down and removed two bottles to pass them over to April. Then he bent back down again and pulled out one extra. “And take this one too; a special treat from me." As April took the third one, Mike winked slyly toward her.

“That's very gracious of you, Mike. Are you sure?" April asked.

As Mike turned to make his way back to his truck, he replied, “Of course, beautiful."

April blushed deeply, her heart fluttered as she silently watched Mike begin to pull away. Maybe later this evening, she'd be able to…

“Sister, why are you still standing in the doorway?" May's tone felt cold and accusatory.

April spun around quickly, nearly dropping one of the three bottles of milk. “I…um…was just making sure that Mi…the milk man made it back down the hill," she said nervously.

May squinted her eyes. “Come then. It's time for lunch, sister."

The pair moved from the foyer and into the kitchen. April quickly put two of the three bottles into the refrigerator while May started cutting up vegetables for a lite afternoon salad. The pair ate in near silence, only May speaking to ask April to pour her a glass of the freshly delivered milk. A tension hung in the air between the pair for the first time for as long as either could remember.

April finished her lunch before May, wordlessly moving from the table to the sink with her dishes; the only noise in the house, the faint sounds of the radio still playing in the living room.

As May finished her own meal, she intentionally dropped her fork to the plate, causing April to freeze, looking over at her sister.

“April, do you have feelings for that Coyote _boy_?" May put emphasis on the last word, clearing showing her disdain for April showing affections for anyone besides herself.

April put the cleaning utensils down and stared at May. Her face felt hot now. She wanted to tell May the truth, but…

“Of course not, May! Why, I'd never think of such things."

May pushed her chair back, stood and quickly left the dining table, making her way back toward the living room.

“May! Please…" April called out toward her sister May, following quickly behind her.

As they entered the living room, the announcer on the radio began speaking, announcing the next song.

“Thank goodness you're still here with us. Up next, we've got the very popular song, 'We're One and the Same'. This one was requested, so I'm sure it goes out to a special someone out there."

May stood facing the bookshelves that the pair had spent the morning organizing, her arms crossed in front of her. As April entered the room, she walked up behind her sister, putting a hand on May's shoulder.

“Sister, please, I just…I long for…company."

May whipped around, her eyes staring intently into April's eyes. “Am I not enough? We've always been together, April. We've needed no one else and now you feel that some strange man will make you happy?"

“May, please! Just listen to me!"

May pointed a finger at April. “Who got us this far?"

April was taken aback by the question. “What?"

May asked once again, “Who got the pair of us this far in life, April?"

Sheepishly, April lowered her head, looking toward the floor. “You did, May."

“And who made sure we had enough money to buy this house?" May asked.

April could feel the tears starting to well up in her eyes. “It was you."

May smiled, replying, “That's right, sister. And I'm the one that makes the rules. You are forbidden from ever seeing that _boy_ ever again!"

April began sobbing, her knees buckling underneath her as she fell to the floor.

“And now folks, another request. After that last little ditty, let's hope that this one keeps you dancing. Grab a loved one as we play, 'You'll Never Be Alone'. Be sure to stay tuned for a word from our sponsors."

April stayed on the floor, weeping for several hours. April knew that May, the ghost of April's dead sister, would never allow them to be separated.
