That was odd. The basement in his mother's house was pretty bare, to be fair, for his mother, Samantha didn't often keep too much clutter around. That was a pretty good thing, for it meant cleaning was a lot easier around the house. The basement, on the other hand, was not much used, as his mother didn't like going down the wooden steps into it.\n\n\u0026nbsp;\n\nBut the box was strange, with a gold inlay over the top with a floral-like pattern, twisted leaves and vine-like things all running into one another. It drew his eye so much along the weaving nature of it that it made him dizzy.\n\n\u0026nbsp;\n\nMark grunted and shook his head, wanting to run his fingers back through his hair but resisted the urge. Dust would show up in his blonde hair, making it all look like he had dandruff and he'd always taken basic pride in his appearance, paying attention to the little details. Otherwise, he was in himself of an average build and height, though he was the kind of guy who had an easy smile about him.\n\n\u0026nbsp;\n\n“Hm…\"\n\n\u0026nbsp;\n\nHe opened the box slowly, fishing out the jewellery inside. Amulets. That wasn't what he would have expected at all. With a gold surrounding setting, each amulet wavered through various shades of blue, like water that was always in motion. A small scrap of paper was taped to the inside of the lid.\n\n\u0026nbsp;\n\n_Wearer beware_\n\n_Corruption in hand_\n\n_To charm and snare_\n\n_Don't break the band_\n\n_\u0026nbsp;_\n\n“That's super strange,\" he said with a roll of his eyes, though his curiosity was perked. “What happens if I put this on someone then? They must be mom's.\"\n\n\u0026nbsp;\n\nHe mused over that for a moment. It was probably some kooky thing from another age and time, his mom's years. Maybe his mom would like to wear one of them again? And wouldn't it be funny if it actually corrupted her?\n\n\u0026nbsp;\n\nHe chuckled at the notion. Nah… Everything would be fine, he was sure of it. But it would be funny, at least.\n\n\u0026nbsp;\n\nHe could have just given it to his mom, but something told Mark that a little subterfuge was needed. For he waited until his mother was in bed and asleep to sneak in and, very gently, brushing her hair out of the way, fastened it around her neck. His mother was on the stricter side and, frankly, he was sure she wouldn't have tolerated him even offering the necklace to her.\n\n\u0026nbsp;\n\nHe paused before leaving, admiring his mother's hair spilling across the pillow, though he could never imagine his mom with a halo, even if she had long, blonde hair. She was strongly built, kind of like a Valkyrie or an Amazon – or maybe the latter was going a bit too far. She was tall, to be fair, but she came with a business-like attitude and cracked down on him, even as an adult, for the smallest misdemeanour or supposed slight.\n\n\u0026nbsp;\n\nEither way, she was beautiful…but very difficult to be around.\n\n\u0026nbsp;\n\n“Mom… I hope this corrupts you,\" he murmured under his breath as he backed out of the room, closing the door behind him. “It'd be fun to control you for a while.
