Thadious left his modest home on Maple Drive and grimanced slightly at the pollutant smell that greeted his senses. Digging into his pockets the rice rat pulled out a comb and brushed his sandy chestnut pelt.
On his left hand he lit his digital watch. 6:34, just enough time for a coffee, but not much.
Thadious was like most males his age, they mostly relied on a strick schedual to please their growing needs. Time was of the essense. Trudging down the walk he peered around to see much of life rising from their sleep. Parents tending to wailing kids, others tending to lawns. It was peaceful here, which befitted his quite personality.

The Police Department hadn't changed either, many rushing off to obbtain a criminal, others doing standard booking as criminals spat threats to them. One, a burly mutt with a lazy eye, leered at the Cheif and growled on his oily pelt, as if blaming him for his misfortunes. Thadious grinned and gave an orderly wave at the mutt as he sipped on his coffee, heading into his dim office that smelled of pine and cologne.
Inside he began shifting aimlessly through the files sent to him. One caught his interest, if not caused his heart to skip a beat.
**SECREST SLAUGHTERS**

_Two Dead, one missing._

Attempting to read all the information the door opened wide, another officerwas there, this one was named Benard Guine. Thadious snuffed vainly and spun away in his chair, still shifting through the files, "Hello, Gomez," he yawned.
The mouse slammed the door in his usual, puffed fashion and snapped harshly in his hispanic accent, "W'ere have you been?"
"On break."
"Breaks like dat cause one to become careless. See the file I left you?" His foots steps echoed on the wodden floor as he approched, actually swipping Thadious's coffee as the rat went to take a sip. Thadious looked at his empty hand passivly for a moment and then at the mouse with his brown eyes and flexed his fingers, "There's no need to get angry," He grumbled, seeming more hurt by the theft of his coffee than his partner's tone.

Gomez took a drink from it and tended to his silvered whiskers, which made Thadious chuckle some: It showed Gomez's age, even if the silver was natural. The water mouse noticed the smirk and put the coffee down, standing on the tips of his feet to appear bigger than he actually was, "What's that grin about, Royal?!"
"I think it's cute when you try to be scary." Thadious pushed away from him in the chair and sheeled to another side of the desk, Gomez slamming his fist in rage, "This is _serious_!"
"So am I."
Gomez snarled and snatched the paper from Thadious's large hands and began reading the report.
"Mr. Nathanial Dorian Secrest and his wife, Susan Guillen Secrest were found murdered in their estate. The youngest, Conner Nethanial Secrest, is missing."
Thadious played with his pencil and looked bored at him, "How old wa the boy?"
"No more than 3."
Thadious did not reply, he stood from his worn leather chair and paced the room with a heavy sigh, scratching his head, "Time of death?"
"Placed between nine p.m and twelve a.m. Their wounds are the apparent cause of death." Gomez's voice was solmn, almost like he actually felt for this case.
The rat, however, looked out the window and into the streets below, rocking back and forth softly and he observed children playing, women with shopping bags and men talking with phones grasped in their hands. "Any suspects?"
The Secrest were wealthy, noble and had sadly lost their oldest son three years before to suicide. No one knew why, the boy as in his twenties. Young, kind, handome. He was rumored to have drowned himself after an argument over being disowned.

Thadious looked back at Gomez, the mouse shook his head. "The killer was smart: No biological traces on the bodies. He's gone."

The Cheif of Police wheeled on his feet and barked towards him, ushering Gomez away and he gave orders, "Start the car, find anything, _anything_! I want his head on my desk, **now!**" When he was alone, and the office empty his chest burned and Thadious lurched back into the chair, holding his heart and panting. The scar that laced over his fur mocking him

"}
