I leap into the air,
my talons scraping the hardened earth.
My wings unfold,
lifting me into the skies where I belong.
The wind caresses me,
like a lover or a close friend,
whispering beautiful secrets
in an untold, primal language.
I unleash a bestial roar,
a playful challenge to the world below.
Flying into the setting sun,
I chase rays of diminishing light
as the colors dance upon my sparkling scales.
I spend hours there, but the time passes quickly;
the light of Father Sun is soon replaced
by the pale glow of Mother Moon.
Tucking my wings, I dive downwards--
spiraling, twirling, twisting,
unfurling them just in time to catch myself,
landing with natural precision and grace.
As the world begins to fall into peaceful slumber,
so I do; the night singing to me her ancient lullaby.
I startle awake, the sun shining down onto my face through glass.
I look down in surprise. My scales have turned to skin,
my magnificent wings into weak, human limbs.
I don't understand this change in form,
my brain still under the effects of deep sleep.
Thinking back, I realize my blissful hours were only a dream.
The harsh reality delivers a crippling blow to my soul,
the soul of a true dragon trapped in a body of flesh.
I cover my human eyes with unwanted hands,
mourning the loss of something I never truly had--
a happiness I was not born to know.
