A Sea of Sand

What life does one lead when one is in a desert,
Devoid of soul or direction, a goal
Devoid of water or sustenance, a reason
Devoid of friend or lover, a safety net

Trudging on the hot, emotionless sand,
Sweltering heat, unforgiving.
Unyielding light, blinding.
Wavering resolve, crumbling.

A visitor from afar, looks on with pity,
A spectator in the game, tears in eyes
A lonesome soul, blind to the joys of the lands
A thirsty man, seeking the promised Oasis.
Amidst this sea of sand and snakes.

Each step a bit harder,
Each step takes one more ounce
Each breath takes another chip,
At his already broken heart,
Grounding the pieces to dust.

He tries to hold on, best he can.
He tries to run, fast as he can
But alas another quicksand, another trap.
It takes another piece, to escape this pit.

Regardless, he trudges on, directionless.
Regardless, he lives on, emotionless
The barrage of despair and sadness,
Espionage of his fragile hopes and dreams.

Alas, left foot after right, right after left.
Marching on, tirelessly.
All that's left, desire for the end
Marching until he falls, to never rise again.
To never feel, fear, or dream again.
