#51 of Poetry

This is a poem written mostly about understanding things (or trying to), and most of it is from my experiences (both good and bad) within my short life of 18 years (so far). Anyways, I hope you enjoy reading it as much as enjoyed writing and sharing it.

_An Understanding_

No one understands everything
No one has the capacity
We all want to
But the simple truth is
We can't
We just can't understand it all

There are many things I don't pretend to understand
But there are also many things I do understand
That many others do not

Some don't understand
What it is to be free
To say and do what you want
Knowing the consequences
And accepting them

Some don't understand
What it is not to have a father
To wonder why and why
And not be sure what to hate
And what to yearn for

Some don't understand
What it is to be proud of yourself
To be happy for what you've done
To go up to the world
 And pronounce "I've done this!
Look at me! I'm here!"

Some don't understand
What it is to hate yourself
To live each day
Disgraced and ashamed
Whenever you look at yourself in the mirror

Some don't understand
What it is to love
To care for someone
And not care about a single one of their flaws
For their flaws are only defined
By who they are as a whole

Some don't understand
What it's like to not be love
To wonder what you've done wrong
To wonder why you
Why do you deserve this?

Some don't understand
What true friendship is
To be with people who truly care
Who truly want to be around you
To be around people who accept you

Some don't understand
What it is to be abused
To cover the bruises
And hide from those you love
To hide the emotional scars
To blame yourself for something
You didn't even do

Some don't understand
What it is to appreciate everything you have
To want simple things in life
Things you already have
To just continue being there

Some don't understand
What it is to wake up
And have every day be a struggle
What it is to want basic things
Like heat and food and clothes that fit

Some don't understand
What it is to overcome a struggle
To go against the odds
And prove those wrong
By saying "Yes I can
And I did."

Some don't understand
What it is to watch those you care about
Destroy themselves
Hate themselves
And to hurt themselves

Some don't understand
What it is to be heard
As a person
And a human being
And be respected for it

Some don't understand
What it's like to want to die
To wish your life over
To think no one will care
If you are gone

Some don't understand
The beauty of wondering why
To question and wonder
And to think until your questions
Lead to questions that improve
Your outlook on life

There are many things
That many people
Do not understand
Not everyone understands the same things

Understanding is important
It opens our minds
And broadens our feelings
So it is our duty
To help our fellow humans
Gain an understanding of the world
As best as we can
