#6 of Free Poetry for Others

This was a long overdue poem written for Skipper~Heart based on her request on this journal: http://www.sofurry.com/view/390983
Her request was: "I want one about a girl who loves someone she can never have. Against all the odds she finds a way to be with him by taking him and killing them both...it being very consentual. Write as much as you want to make it good with a rhyme scheme of abab. If that is acceptable."
This was probably the most difficult poem I have ever written, for I have never taken so long to write a poem. Many times I could whip out a decent one in a matter of minutes, but this one...this was a great challenge.
As a poet, I always restrict myself to keeping the same number of syllables in each line while keeping the second and forth line of each stanza rhyming.
Because she asked for a more challenging rhyming scheme, that's where all of my previous experience sort of fell short-handed, and so I had to retrain myself to work out a fluid stream of thoughts while keeping the rhyme scheme.
So there are exactly six syllables in each line while every other line in each stanza rhymes. This is not as easy as it looks, and to make a whole story in such a way takes patience.
I chose the otter and the elf because, well, the fursona of the fur who requested this poem is a hybrid of the two species, so in order to make this poem more personal for her, I used the two species.
Anyways, enough jabbering.
Enjoy.

_There always comes a time_
_When everyone hates you_
_For commiting a crime_
_That indeed was not true._

_Whether it be of loot_
_Or a break from the norm,_
_Society's a brute_
_And has a reckless form._

_This was the lesson learned_
_By a lonely otter_
_Whom in her heart had yearned_
_For love that could have been._

_Ever since the great war_
_Between the otters and_
_Elves, t'was no mercy nor_
_A chance for peace at hand;_

_But this otter was smart--_
_A master of calm stealth._
_How she longed for his heart--_
_A value beyond wealth._

_She could blend with the trees_
_With her tanned-colored fur._
_Her run--swift as a breeze--_
_Would be an aid for her_

_As she would dodge and duck_
_Every arrow and dart_
_Shot by fiendish elves--luck_
_Had seemed to play a part._

_After an endless plight_
_Of hiding in shadows,_
_She found her elven knight_
_Waiting by the willows._

_The two species embraced--_
_Otter and elf as one._
_Her heart became fast-paced_
_As she felt she had won;_

_But the elves would find them_
_Whether they fleed or not._
_Their love would only stem_
_Hatred if they were caught,_

_Yet their love transcended_
_Through life's limitations--_
_Not even death offended_
_Their covert relations._

_With one final breath, she_
_Took his arrow with haste,_
_Sticking it to a tree_
_So the sharp edge was placed_

_Against her back, right_
_Behind her heart. She held_
_Her elven lover tight._
_Leaning backwards, she yelled_

_From the sudden, painful_
_Rush of emotions and tears_
_That poured from her baneful_
_Mind. The lovers' own fears_

_Of being caught would fade_
_As the arrow plunged through_
_Her beating heart. The blade_
_Pushed out her chest, into_

_Her elven lover's heart._
_The dying otter and_
_Her elf would never part_
_Ever again. His hand_

_Weakly clutched her webbed paw_
_As they stared each other_
_Down one last time. He saw_
_The eyes of his otter_

_Begin to shut, and so they_
_Shared one last kiss. As elves_
_Arrived, they seemed to fray_
_From the war that--themselves_

_Had raged for trivial_
_Wrongs blamed on the otters--_
_Yet did almost little_
_To keep the two lovers_

_From becoming one with_
_Their hearts connected._
_And so goes the old myth_
_That love's unaffected_

_By life, death, or any_
_Obstacle brought forth, for_
_Once two minds are ready,_
_The love lasts evermore._
