Or maybe just the one behind the grin.","content":"A play of pure futility!  \nWe speak our parts as automatons,  \nEmotions leaked from slits under our eyes  \nTo drain in tiny pools on ruined carpet,  \nStains of neverwas, and neverwill.  \nA blocking so contrite we scoff in rhythm  \nAnd sweep our hands in broad gesticulations,  \nBronze masks of flailing limbs;  \nSpotlights pepper procenium framing  \nSo arching and o'erwrought it crumbles at our breath--  \nTumbles in chunks across the apron,  \nThe orchestra pit in shambles at performance end.  \n  \nThis is our great Shakespearean tragedy--  \nTo be unyeilding in our manners,  \nCodified with social standards and banners of truces.  \nWe denied the screaming for the sake of a white flag;  \nThe emotion is in the print!  \nWe need not add more, no Royal Society will deny!  \nStage directions are meaningless, so we stagger,  \nWe haggardly wrangle with these tenuous traces  \nLingering fingerings to lutes we shan't play.  \n  \nO, to be the poison in my ear!  \nTo be the happy dagger!  \nYet no, we are beset to exist upon pages strange:  \nI, written, as a love labour lost--  \nYou, hidden away, as labour won.\n\n  \n  \n\n","series":{"name":"Poetry","previous":"https://fse.anthro.fr/stories/465243-the-great-orchestra.json","next":"https://fse.anthro.fr/stories/468040-remove-the-head.json"}}
