News at 11!","content":"Remove the head, and what is left?  \nA pile of blood and scales and bone  \nAll crumpled down into a heap beneath the sun--  \nOh great Saint that saves us!  \nIllustrious in design, ye mighty with a sword  \nAnd helpful with shield and steed.  \nA slice, a crack, and dead dragon lies  \nAs many creatures fore and aft.  \n  \nRemove the head, and what is left?  \nA cry forever echoing through leaves,  \nA blade now stained with blood undeserv'd  \nFrom a creature who had not instigated.  \nSnicker-snack, indeed, fair boy  \nWho ran headlong into the wood  \nTo prove his father's cry unjust  \nAnd in its stead a death now perpetrated,  \nLetting the Tum-Tum feed upon its form.  \n  \nRemove the head, and what is left?  \nAs preacher says to flock at dawn,  \n\"These deadly sins, you shall not take  \nInto your vocabulary, not by me!\"  \nAnd we do nod and agree in word,  \nBut then in deed we transgress entire--  \nUntil we find our backs on brick  \nAnd see the truth in callous coldness,  \nBut that our victim, left to cogitate  \nInside a cardboard moving crate  \nIs now but a fable for our detective intrepid.  \n  \nRemove the head, and what is left?  \nA sweating pile of secret desires,  \nAll wet from running hither, yon,  \nWith limbs akimbo, running contrails  \nLike so many planes of peacock ilk--  \nThese beings inside beings borne  \nOf imagination and loneliness;  \nOf something more than what we're given,  \nThis emotional upholstery that swaddles those  \nWho then embrace the world at large  \nWith all the love they may not show,  \nBut in these suits of sutured fur  \nThey kiss the dawn and praise the moon.\n\n\u0026nbsp;Remove the head, and what is left?  \nSomething much more potent.  \n  \n\n","series":{"name":"Poetry","previous":"https://fse.anthro.fr/stories/468039-love-s-labour-s-won.json"}}
