He was in the den, Ninetales was sitting above him and he was lying between her legs. Ninetales looked down at him.\n\n\"You're awake,\" she said, \"I hope you're not planning to go straight to sleep tonight.\"\n\nDark Growlithe just looked at the floor and remained silent.\n\n\"Look at me!\" hissed Ninetales.\n\nDark Growlithe glared at her.\n\n\"I didn't rescue you just because I have a wonderful, kind heart. I could see your potential and I was right. You've grown into a strong, good-looking growlithe. All I want as repayment is you as my mate. Is that too much? Your genes are strong, you can help me have stronger children.\"\n\n\"I don't want you as a mate,\" said Dark Growlithe, \"You were more like a mother than a mate.\"\n\n\"It's not that bad, it will just be a few times this season. You know how many males would kill for a chance to be my mate?\"\n\nDark Growlithe ignored her and sulked.\n\n\"You're not leaving my den until I'm pregnant. Look at the door.\"\n\nDark Growlithe looked. Two members of the Vulpix Squad stood there.\n\n\"They will not let you leave.\"\n\nThe two vulpix were the ones Dark Growlithe had watched beat up the houndour and they both glared at him. Ninetales walked to the door. When she left Dark Growlithe felt colder as her warmth disappeared.\n\n\"I'm getting a meal. Behave yourself while I'm gone.\"\n\nAs Dark Growlithe lay in the dark cave, all alone, thoughts flashed through his mind. Thoughts of Ninetales and the pack.\n\n_My_ _duty_ _is_ _to_ _the_ _pack_ _and_ _to_ _Ninetales._\n\n\"_Don_'_t_ _talk_ _about_ _Ninetales_ _like_ _that!_ _She_'_s_ _our_ _leader_ _and_ _she_ _raised_ _me._ _You_ _should_ _be_ _honoured_ _to_ _serve_ _her._\"\n\n\"_You_'_ve_ _been_ _brainwashed!_ _Ninetales_' _rules_ _don_'_t_ _conform_ _to_ _natural_ _law._ _No_ _other_ _packs_ _have_ _their_ _females_ _superior._ _You_ _can_'_t_ _even_ _choose_ _a_ _mate_ _in_ _this_ _pack,_ _Ninetales_ _decides_ _whether_ _it_'_s_ _allowed!_ _We_ _should_ _be_ _equal!_ _But_ _no,_ _we_ _have_ _to_ _do_ _what_ _we_'_re_ _told._ _You_ _wouldn_'_t_ _understand,_ _you_ _spend_ _all_ _your_ _time_ _with_ _Ninetales,_ _sucking_ _up,_ _immune_ _to_ _everyone._ _Not_ _everyone_ _can_ _do_ _what_ _they_ _want_ _like_ _you_ _can._\"\n\n\"_You_ _can_ _earn_ _your_ _place_ _in_ _the_ _pack_ _like_ _some_ _others_ _have_ _done._\"\n\n\"_Three_ _others_ _have_ _done_ _it!_ _You_ _just_ _got_ _that_ _rank_ _for_ _who-knows-what_ _reason._ _Just_ _because_ _you_'_re_ _Ninetales_' _favourite._ _That_'_s_ _what_ _determines_ _your_ _rank_ _in_ _this_ _pack,_ _favouritism._\"\n\n\"_That_'_s_ _enough_ _talk!_ _Are_ _you_ _coming_ _back?_\"\n\n\"_No,_ _I_'_d_ _rather_ _die_ _then_ _live_ _as_ _Ninetales_' _slave._\"\n\n\"_You_ _still_ _don_'_t_ _have_ _your_ _own_ _thoughts_ _do_ _you?_\" _asked_ _Vulpix,_ \"_You_'_ll_ _still_ _do_ _whatever_ _Ninetales_ _asks?_\"\n\n\"_I_ _owe_ _her_ _my_ _life._\"\n\n\"_It_'_s_ _sad._ _I_ _believe_ _Flareon,_ _there_ _needs_ _to_ _be_ _more_ _equality_ _in_ _this_ _pack._ _It_'_s_ _too_ _unbalanced._ _Ninetales_ _can_ _do_ _anything_ _and_ _the_ _females_ _can_ _do_ _anything_ _to_ _the_ _males._ _Obviously_ _they_'_re_ _getting_ _upset._ _There_'_ll_ _be_ _more_ _like_ _Flareon_ _and_ _more_ _like_ _me._ _We_ _want_ _to_ _choose_ _our_ _own_ _future,_ _not_ _be_ _forced_ _into_ _it._\"\n\n_A_ _male_ _houndour_ _came_ _around_ _a_ _rock_ _and_ _accidentally_ _bumped_ _into_ _one_ _of_ _the_ _vulpix_ _from_ _the_ _Vulpix_ _squad._ _Immediately_ _she_ _growled_ _and_ _tackled_ _him._ _He_ _was_ _knocked_ _over_ _and_ _pinned_ _down_ _before_ _he_ _knew_ _what_ _was_ _happening._ _The_ _vulpix_ _stood_ _over_ _him,_ _her_ _teeth_ _around_ _his_ _neck._\n\n\"_Watch_ _where_ _you_'_re_ _going!_\" _she_ _growled,_ _his_ _skin_ _and_ _fur_ _muffling_ _her_ _words_ _somewhat._\n\n_He_ _nodded_ _his_ _head_ _and_ _whimpered_ _pitifully_ _until_ _she_ _let_ _him_ _go._ _As_ _she_ _got_ _off_ _him_ _she_ _deliberately_ _stamped_ _on_ _his_ _stomach._ _He_ _gasped_ _for_ _breath_ _but_ _didn_'_t_ _do_ _anything._\n\n\"_But_ _I_ _don_'_t_ _want_ _to_ _be_ _your_ _mate,_\" _protested_ _the_ _male._\n\n\"_Too_ _bad._ _I_ _want_ _a_ _baby_ _and_ _I_ _want_ _you_ _as_ _the_ _father_ _so_ _quit_ _whining_ _and_ _mount_ _me!_\"\n\n\"_I-I_ _didn_'_t_ _mean_ _I_ _wanted_ _to_ _be_ _your_ _mate!_\" _stammered_ _Dark_ _Growlithe._\n\n\"_Too_ _bad,_ _I_ _want_ _you._ _You_ _have_ _an_ _incredibly_ _interesting_ _set_ _of_ _genes._ _I_ _want_ _to_ _add_ _it_ _to_ _my_ _line._\"\n\n\"_Let_ _me_ _out._ _I_ _don_'_t_ _want_ _to_ _stay_ _here._\"\n\n\"_You're going to be my mate so stop your whining.\"_\n\n'Maybe Flareon and Vulpix were right,' thought Dark Growlithe, 'there is no free choice here. Everything is what Ninetales decides. No one has a choice. I've been blind to it. I watched Houndour get beaten up unfairly. Flareon was practically raped and I did nothing. Now it's happened to me. I thought I could trust Ninetales, I thought I could rely on her to protect the pack but instead she turned on me and wants to force me to be her mate. Is this why Flareon left? He didn't want the mate he was going to be forced to have. Am I hated as much as they hate Ninetales? Do I really have no thoughts of my own? It's not true! I'm thinking for myself now. I love Ninetales but I don't want to be her mate! If she can't understand that maybe I should leave. The only reason she ever cared for me was my genes. She wanted my body and my genes. All those years all she thought about was mating with me! I'm not having it!'\n\n\"I'm leaving!\" shouted Dark Growlithe, \"I'm not mating with you Ninetales!\"\n\nThe two vulpix looked at him.\n\n\"You're not leaving,\" said the first one.\n\n\"So quieten down or I'll have to come and pay you back for stepping all over me,\" said the second one.\n\nDark Growlithe bared his teeth and growled.\n\n\"Try it! I'm not going to go easy on you!\"\n\nThe two vulpix walked into the cave and prepared to fight.\n\n\"You are aware that we're the strongest pokémon in the pack?\" asked the second vulpix.\n\nDark Growlithe snorted, \"You're not the one Ninetales favours.\"\n\n\"Shut up!\" shouted the first vulpix as she dashed at him, \"You've no longer got any protection!\"\n\nDark Growlithe met the vulpix head on. The two crashed together and bounced away. As he hit the floor, Dark Growlithe let out a flamethrower attack. She jumped to the side and the second vulpix tackled Dark Growlithe from the side. They rolled into the wall, wrestling for the dominant position. Sensing a moment Dark Growlithe sank his teeth into the vulpix's shoulder. Blood squirted into his mouth and she cried out in pain. The other vulpix shot her own flamethrower, hitting Dark Growlithe in the chest. He flew back into the wall, slightly shocked. She then lunged for his throat but Dark Growlithe was lying on his back, raised his hind paws and kicked her in the face. Her jaws snapped together with a loud crack and one white fang fell out between her lips. Dark Growlithe got up and faced his opponents. Both vulpix were bleeding and did not look happy. Once again both vulpix charged at him. Dark Growlithe used take down against their combined attacks and his stronger attack won out. The vulpix were thrown to the side and Dark Growlithe burst through. Ignoring his injuries and fatigue, he sprinted out Ninetales' den.\n\nNinetales was coming home, dragging her prey, a stantler, and saw Dark growlithe sprint from the den.\n\n\"Vulpix!\" yelled Ninetales, \"Bring Dark Growlithe back now!\"\n\nThe injured Houndour, now used to her injury, ran as fast as she could to Ninetales.\n\n\"If I can get Dark Growlithe back, may I mate with him?\"\n\n\"Fine, tie him down and eat him alive for all I care. As long as I get to mate with him first, after that he's yours.\"\n\nGrinning happily, Houndour also joined the chase.\n\n\\*\\*\\*\\*\\*\n\nDark Growlithe ran up the mountain, desperate to get away from the pack and start a new life. He glanced behind him and saw no one.\n\n\"Stop!\"\n\nDark Growlithe looked in front of him and saw Houndour.\n\n\"H-how did you get there?\" he demanded.\n\n\"I've learnt some secret paths here on the mountains. Now they can help me get the best prize.\"\n\n\"Leave me alone! I don't want to be anyone's mate yet!\"\n\nHoundour ignored him and jumped at him. Dark Growlithe met her and their teeth clashed together. Their cries echoing far through the mountains. Saliva dripped from their open mouths and splattered on the floor. The two dog pokémon continued their fight, unaware the vulpix had surrounded them. Even though she was a good fighter Houndour was wounded, she lunged quickly and her teeth cut Dark Growlithe close to his neck. She had no grip and sped past him, as she went he jumped and spun around, landing on her back\n\n\"Mate with me!\" she cried in her frenzy.\n\nDark Growlithe clamped his teeth down upon her neck in disgust. Her vertebra cracked and blood flowed through her fur and poured down on the ground. Dark Growlithe dropped the dead pokémon and looked around at the vulpix. The cut on his neck was slowly oozing blood and his jaws, chest and legs were matted with Houndour's blood.\n\n\"Give up,\" growled one of the vulpix. \"You're outnumbered and surrounded.\"\n\nDark Growlithe just raised his muzzle to the sky and let out a long mournful howl and jumped off the path.
