This very lightweight flexible metal collar is latched around the student's neck and sealed shut. It cannot be removed except for in an emergency. The latch, once closed, fuses shut, rendering removal impossible. Once the student graduates or leaves the academy, the latching mechanism is deactivated allowing for simple removal. The collar will be refit on a yearly basis to adjust for students' physical growth. Students are required to wear the collars year round, including vacations. Attached to the collar is a mystical gemstone, called a flashgem. These come in various colors, but all function the same way. When a signal is sent to the collar, usually from a wristwatch or bracelet controller, the gemstone emits a bright flash of light, blinding the wearer momentarily, but also enchanting him or her. The wearer falls into a deep trance, where upon they will obey any commands completely willingly by the person wielding the controller. The trance has been described as being a deep, warm, extremely comfortable sleep-like state, in which the wearer is not only willing, but happy to obey any orders given. All teachers have controllers that allow them to entrance anywhere from a single particular student, to a large group at a time (up to 50). Parents of students are given a smaller version for their particular child.  Upon enrollment in Hypnos Academy, once the collar is fitted, the student undergoes several conditioning sessions, which usually take about three days to complete properly. The conditioning ensures several key behaviors. First, it ensures that the wearer will respond to the flashgem consistently every time. Second, it ensures that the wearer will obey any command given, no matter how humiliating or against the wearer's will. Third, it ensures that the wearer will not notice the collar, or if they do, they will not think too much of it or attempt to remove it. (This ensures the well-being and comfort of the student.) Fourth, and finally, it ensures that the wearer will ignore or rationalize any strange goings-on they may witness; including witnessing other students being entranced, losing hours of memory due to a trance, and the act of entrancement itself. The collars are used as a punitive measure for behavioral issues. Usually, the punishment involves entrancing a disruptive or unruly student, taking them aside, giving them instruction to behave properly, and releasing the trance. Such methods usually last for about 5 hours before wearing off. However, power tends to corrupt, and so many teachers use more... unorthodox methods of rehabilitation. Other uses of the collar include giving special tutoring sessions, to help students having trouble with their grades. The trance allows students to absorb information more easily, and retain information at a much better rate, allowing a student to learn twice as much in half the time. Teachers also tend to use the collars to solve disputes between students, or even for their own personal pleasure.  After a trance session, the teacher will go through a simple set of instructions, erasing the student's memories of anything that occurred in the trance, and creating a set of false memories in their place. Then the teacher can send the student on their way. This is the one absolute law of Hypnos Academy. This protects the students from severe psychological damage, and the teacher from legal issues. Failure to erase a student's memory or causing harm to a student in any manner will result in the teacher's arrest for anything from child rape to first degree assault. Teachers, upon hiring, are given EXTENSIVE training in the use of the controller before being allowed to wield one, and as such, are extremely unlikely to fail to erase a memory by accident. In the history of Hypnos Academy, this rule has only been broken once. Parents are also instructed in the same methods for their child's safety. Upon removal of the collar, the student has the option of regaining any memories lost due to erasure, or leaving the memories permanently locked away. Regaining memories is a quick, easy hypnotic procedure that lasts less than ten minutes, and leaves the patient with all lost memories integrated within their memories.  Sexual activities using the collar are allowed, provided the student comes to no physical harm in the act. The vast majority of alumni of Hypnos Academy, upon having their memories restored upon removal of the collar, claims that sexual activities with the collar were extremely pleasurable, and do not feel violated in any manner. However, parents can elect to a "virgin policy" in which their child must remain untouched throughout their education at the school.
