In the world I've created there are dragons based on all the elements as well as dragons of gold, silver, bronze, iron, etc. This poem is about the shadow or black variant. They are despised by humans and looked down upon by the other elemental dragons as well. Only now the tables have turned and all the other elemental dragons have abandoned mankind due to their violence and greed. War's have broken out and people desperately turn to those shadow dragons they once despised. Begging them for help and protection. In turn the shadow dragons sneer at the hypocrisy of humans and ask where their great protectors are now.","content":"Wings of Darkness\n\n* * *\n\nSoaring wings of darkness  \nmighty rulers of the night.  \nMaster of the skies and symbol  \nof what they all despise.\n\nSlipping through the shadows  \nand disappearing again like smoke.  \nDancing like the wind under the   \nglowing light of the moon.\n\nPay no heed to the tales they tell  \nof liars cloaked in shadow.  \nThey fear what they do not know.  \nLet them hide and let them wallow.\n\nLet them wallow in their fear.  \nLet them scurry to their homes.  \nLet them cower away from the shadows  \nwhile terror shakes their bones.\n\nWings borne beneath the stars  \nare not touched by fear.  \nNor by the twisted tales of men  \nthat fall on listening ears.\n\nAll have gone but those you hate so much.  \nNow only the shadows are left behind.  \nWhere is your protection now?\n\nWhere are the gold and silver kings  \nyou held in such great high esteem?  \nWhere are the bronze and iron knights?  \nWho fought the shadows and banished the night?\n\nWhere are those dragons red who once   \nwarmed your villages with fire?  \nOr the great sea serpents of water   \nwho protected your ships  \nfrom danger most dire?\n\nWhere is the lightning that flashed across the sky?  \nWhere are the mighty wraiths of ice who   \nsheltered you with watchful eyes?\n\nWhere is the wind that blew through the trees?  \nAnd sang such beautiful songs to   \nput your hearts at ease?\n\nThey did not die they left you alone.  \nCold and abandoned to your fate.  \nLonely and lost they left you  \nbecause of your greed and hate.\n\nNow you turn to us for help?  \nThose dragons you despise?  \nNow you pray to us for salvation  \nwhere before you cursed us with lies?\n\nOh how great the irony this is!  \nNow only the shadows can banish the dark.  \nBut can we banish the evil intent  \nthat lies in human hearts?\n\n  \n  \n\n","series":{"name":"Poems","next":"https://fse.anthro.fr/stories/595414-the-jade-emperor.json"}}
