Oliver

The First Fire

"Come Furrow, my little cub" came the sweet familiar voice "Wake now, we must go!"
There was a false air of playfulness in her voice.
He stirred, but did not wake.
"Oh come my little cub!" she cried "Open those eyes!"
Then the screams beyond their thick stone wall pierced his fluffy black ears and with a gasp, the youngster's yellow eyes burst opened.

He glanced up with shock seeing his shivering Mother stretched over him with pure terror upon her face. She held out her comforting arms desperately coaxing him to rise "Come!" she screamed.
There was a moan and tears began to swell as his Mother suddenly tore him away from his warm comfortable cot and into the cold.
"Here little one, we shall fly like the eagle" she whispered hurriedly and with a firm but gentle grip the vixen took her babe, scampering out of the doorway and into the smoke.
Like the fire of a smith's forge, the farm was ablaze.
Their horse and cattle lay slumped down within the mud and blistering embers from the burning crops brushed past the female's pointed face.

Not even his Mother's instinctive grasp could save this cub from the thick black smoke that ran from the thatch. "Dar!" he cried out for his father, his feeble words running with tears and phlegm.
"Come Furrow, be still!" his mother coughed, her voice frail with fear and they scurried down the road, away from the terrifying screams.

Through the flames, red strangers bounded over fences and behind doors with bloodied spears stretching to the sky. They filled the street and cut down all they could find.
The vixen turned her head with fear in her eyes as she ran, leaving her people behind to be butchered in a frenzy of crimson coated bronze.

A great whistling and thundering of hooves clattered from behind their burning home.
Her ears shot up and she held her offspring tight to her breast.
The horses came first, out of the smoke and then the wheels.
One tall figure, alight with rage stood aloft the frame, holding high his blood-soaked spear in the air.
It was him, the Self Appointed King.
He had come all this way, for them.

With a gust of cold air the forest beaconed her escape.
Her nose could smell the pines ahead, and her ears heard the owls briefly, hooting within winter's frozen blanket. Run, she thought. Get off the track and to safety!

But the writhing horses had already seen her tattered cloak wave in the wind.
A horn sounded, groaning loud enough to shatter the windows almost and they cantered after.
The Mother sprinted as clattering death rained down upon them both, the sharp blades whirling upon the spokes, scraping at the walls like a cat's claws.

The tiny cub balled at the sound within her arms and she covered his mouth, scampering for dear life across the mud as her hunters raced behind. A guttering growl echoed down the street, and in a flash, through the flames the vixen yelped. Her offspring screamed as they were both thrown to the cold floor.
She did not make it.

A broad spear ripped it's way into the Mother's back and through the heart, nearly taking her cub's head also.
She gutted and fell forward, Lifeless in the ice.
With that, the poor little one's world was covered by a terrifying darkness.

Savage sounding heckling rose as the chariot rode aside and trampled over all.
Many bloodied boots followed, their torches burning and hearts eager for slaughter.
With eyes set on grain, gold and silver they left only until satisfied of enough blood.
Nothing but death and heartache was given to cool over in the frost that night, and many more were to follow after.
...................................................................................................................................................................

Well, here is the first part of an ongoing short story series I am attempting to make.

I have also made some music to go along with this first installment.
