I hope it's...\" \u0026nbsp;Fox trails off as the craft slows.\n\n  \n\n\"It's a spacecraft... get back! \u0026nbsp;It's comin' in hot!\" \u0026nbsp;Fox yells as he dives to\n\nthe side.\n\n  \n\nThe spacecraft crashes nose-first into the dirt floor of the battlefield,\u0026nbsp;\n\ncoming to a halt inches from Fox and Link.\n\n  \n\nAs soon as the craft's engines die down, Fox and Link approach it.\n\n  \n\nThe canopy of the craft is kicked off from within, and the two jump back. \u0026nbsp;Fox\u0026nbsp;\n\ngrabs his blaster, holding it firmly. \u0026nbsp;Link draws his sword.\n\n  \n\n\"Alright, come on out... no sudden movements, though.\" \u0026nbsp;Fox speaks calmly.\n\n  \n\nWhen the pilot hops out of the cockpit, Fox nearly jumps out of his skin.\n\n  \n\n\"I'd hope you wouldn't have forgotten your own old man after all these years,\u0026nbsp;\n\nFox.\" \u0026nbsp;James chuckles.\n\n  \n\n\"D-dad? \u0026nbsp;Holy shit... is it really you?\" \u0026nbsp;Fox asks, lowering his gun.\n\n  \n\n\"Yeah, Junior... It's me. \u0026nbsp;I'm back.\" \u0026nbsp;James replies.\n\n  \n\nFox hugs him tightly.\n\n  \n\n\"Oh my god, I thought you were dead! \u0026nbsp;We all did!\" \u0026nbsp;Fox speaks.\n\n  \n\n\"I can assure you, I'm alive and kicking.\" \u0026nbsp;James pats Fox's ears.\n\n  \n\nThe announcer, Tom Nook, walks up. \u0026nbsp;\"Excuse me... would you please give your\u0026nbsp;\n\nname for the people?\"\n\n  \n\n\"Ahh... the name's James McCloud.\" \u0026nbsp;James speaks into the microphone the tanuki\n\nis holding.\n\n  \n\n\"A CHALLENGER APPEARS! \u0026nbsp;JAMES MCCLOUD!\" \u0026nbsp;Tom shouts.\n\n  \n\nFox swiftly grabs Tom and puts a hand over his mouth. \u0026nbsp;\"No no no! \u0026nbsp;Dad's not\u0026nbsp;\n\na challenger in this tournament!\"\n\n  \n\nTom growls softly, looking annoyed at Fox. \u0026nbsp;\"Fine, spoilsports. \u0026nbsp;Your dad looks\n\nlike he still has plenty of fight in 'im, though.\"\n\n  \n\n\"That I do...\" James smiles as he watches Tom walk back to the sidelines.\n\n  \n\n\"Dad, tell me what happened... where the hell were you?\"\n\n  \n\n\"I'll tell... but first, you should tell me about this little competition. \u0026nbsp;\n\nWhat's going on here? \u0026nbsp;Is it something you shouldn't be doing, Fox?\" \u0026nbsp;James\u0026nbsp;\n\nraises an eyebrow.\n\n  \n\n\"Wha??? \u0026nbsp;N-no!\" \u0026nbsp;Fox stammers.\n\n  \n\nLink places his sword point-first in the ground. \u0026nbsp;\"It's a fighting-and-skills\u0026nbsp;\n\ntournament, where competitors battle it out to win the Super Smash Brothers\u0026nbsp;\n\nTrophy.\"\n\n  \n\n\"Huh. \u0026nbsp;We didn't have this around back in my days.\" \u0026nbsp;James speaks.\n\n  \n\n\"Fox, myself, Pikachu, and several other people from across the galaxy formed\u0026nbsp;\n\nthis tournament to take place each summer. \u0026nbsp;It started off as a light-hearted\u0026nbsp;\n\nsuggestion for me to help Fox cope with your disappearance, and it's just grown\n\nfrom there.\" \u0026nbsp;Link explains.\n\n  \n\n\"Wait wait wait... you do this every summer?\" \u0026nbsp;James blinks.\n\n  \n\n\"Yeah, dad... every year, we come here and spar for the Smash Brothers Trophy.\n\nI thought you'd be proud, since Link and I were a couple of the founding\u0026nbsp;\n\nmembers. \u0026nbsp;It can get pretty brutal though... luckily, we don't get hurt.\" \u0026nbsp;Fox\u0026nbsp;\n\nexplains.\n\n  \n\n\"Oh, how so?\" \u0026nbsp;James asks.\n\n  \n\n\"Well, for one... this arena is set in neutral space, where the normal laws of\u0026nbsp;\n\nphysics do not apply.\"\n\n  \n\n\"Hmm... that explains my crash-landing... \u0026nbsp;why the wacky physics, though?\"\n\n  \n\n\"Well... it's so we can take all sorts of damage and injury without dying.\"\n\n  \n\n\"So, you said you've done this before?\" \u0026nbsp;The older fox asks.\n\n  \n\nFox folds his arms and laughs. \u0026nbsp;\"Yeah, dozens of times. \u0026nbsp;It's all an act. \u0026nbsp;A\u0026nbsp;\n\nshow. \u0026nbsp;No one gets hurt, it's like wrestling.\"\n\n  \n\nThe older fox nods. \u0026nbsp;\"I see. \u0026nbsp;So... no risk of death or serious injury?\"\n\n  \n\n\"Nope.\"\n\n  \n\n\"No risk of being sliced in half? \u0026nbsp;Crushed? \u0026nbsp;Shot to death? \u0026nbsp;Burned? \u0026nbsp;Frozen?\"\n\n  \n\nFox shakes his head through all of those. \u0026nbsp;\"Think of it as an experiment in\u0026nbsp;\n\ncartoon reality. \u0026nbsp;Those all happen, with no side-effects.\" \u0026nbsp;Fox replies. \u0026nbsp;\"I\u0026nbsp;\n\nknow... it threw Falco for a loop the first time he joined. \u0026nbsp;Kirby and Yoshi\n\nhad no problems adjusting, though.\"\n\n  \n\nJames nods his head. \u0026nbsp;\"I see...\"\n\n  \n\nFox leans against his father's cooled-off Arwing. \u0026nbsp;\"So, pops... why don't ya\u0026nbsp;\n\ntell me what happened to you over the past 16 years?\"\n\n  \n\nJames nods his head. \u0026nbsp;\"Alright... but I think we should use the conference room\n\nfor some privacy. \u0026nbsp;Link might want to come, as well.\"\n\n  \n\n\"Why Link?\" \u0026nbsp;Fox asks. \u0026nbsp;\"I'm fine with him coming, though...\"\n\n  \n\n\"That's part of the reason. \u0026nbsp;Come. \u0026nbsp;All will be revealed in a few moments.\"\n\n  \n\n  \n\n  \n\nThe door to the conference room in the arena closes and locks. \u0026nbsp;Link sits down\u0026nbsp;\n\non a chair, next to Fox and James.\n\n  \n\n\"So... why all the secrecy? \u0026nbsp;Please don't tell me you're a double-agent or\u0026nbsp;\n\nspy or hitman...\" \u0026nbsp;Fox asks.\n\n  \n\nJames laughs. \u0026nbsp;\"Ohh, no... I'm not \\*that\\* much of a risk-taker, Fox. \u0026nbsp;Here's\u0026nbsp;\n\nthe whole story...\"\n\n  \n\n  \n\nJames begins to retell of how he was shot down by Pigma Dengar near Venom, and\u0026nbsp;\n\nhis craft was pulled into a supermassive black hole.\n\n  \n\n  \n\n\"As my engines shorted out, the Arwing lost its ability to move. \u0026nbsp;I drifted in\u0026nbsp;\n\nspace, powerless, for hours. \u0026nbsp;Eventually, I was pulled into this huge black\u0026nbsp;\n\nhole... My alarms started going crazy... telling me that the gravity distortion\n\nwould kill me and breach structural integrity of the craft... but I survived it\n\nand passed through the singularity, unharmed.\"\n\n  \n\n\"I'm with ya so far. \u0026nbsp;Go on.\" \u0026nbsp;Fox speaks.\n\n  \n\n\"I found myself light-years from the Lylat system. \u0026nbsp;Instead of being in the Big\n\nDipper, my star maps told me I was somewhere in the Little Dipper. \u0026nbsp;That's\u0026nbsp;\n\nstill a good 50... 60... maybe 70 light-years, Fox. \u0026nbsp;I was stranded, didn't\u0026nbsp;\n\nknow what to do, or where to go.\"\n\n  \n\n\"I bet you were freaking out, right? \u0026nbsp;I know I would if I was trapped in an air\n\nbubble inside an endless sea, with my air and food gradually running out...\"\u0026nbsp;\n\nLink speaks.\n\n  \n\n\"Link, I was petrified. \u0026nbsp;Yes, I panicked, but I saw a star nearby, so I used\u0026nbsp;\n\nwhat little propellant I had left to coax my fried engines to work and guide me\n\ntowards that star and its planets. \u0026nbsp;It was by sheer dumb luck that I crash-\n\nlanded on a rocky planet with a warm, breathable atmosphere. \u0026nbsp;The planet was\u0026nbsp;\n\nlush and green, similar to Corneria. \u0026nbsp;I hid my craft in the bushes and went\u0026nbsp;\n\nlooking for help. \u0026nbsp;I wanted to see if there was any sentient life around. \u0026nbsp;I\u0026nbsp;\n\nwas quickly found out by the nearby settlement's soldiers, and I was brought\u0026nbsp;\n\nto their Princess. \u0026nbsp;She allowed me to stay with their village, though I knew I\u0026nbsp;\n\nmight not get home without serious help.\"\n\n  \n\n\"Yeah... my planet is right now, where your planet was about 1500 years ago.\"\u0026nbsp;\n\nLink adds.\n\n  \n\n\"Exactly. \u0026nbsp;Middle ages technology... I could fix the engine if I had a black-\n\nsmith and fuel... luckily, they grew maize, and I was able to ferment it into\n\ncorn-beer, and distill \\*that\\* into ethanol... I poured it into the craft as a\u0026nbsp;\n\ntest-run... It got me off the ground, but I wouldn't be able to leave the\u0026nbsp;\n\natmosphere for a while yet.\"\n\n  \n\n\"So, what happened while you were stuck there?\" \u0026nbsp;Fox asks.\n\n  \n\n\"Well...\" James speaks, rubbing his collar a bit. \u0026nbsp;\"You're probably going to\u0026nbsp;\n\nhate me for this... but I missed your mother, Fox. \u0026nbsp;Ever since she died, I've\u0026nbsp;\n\nwanted a woman's touch again. \u0026nbsp;I met a woman in town there, and she let me stay\n\nin her home, and didn't mind that I looked like a 'monster', as some of the\u0026nbsp;\n\nmore rude villagers would call me. \u0026nbsp;There were a couple other foxes there, but\u0026nbsp;\n\none of the women said there was something about me that attracted her to me...\"\n\n  \n\n\"Aww.... you found love? \u0026nbsp;How sweet.\" \u0026nbsp;Fox smiles.\n\n  \n\n\"I did. \u0026nbsp;It didn't bother me, that some of the villagers feared me while some\u0026nbsp;\n\nrespected me... I was afraid that I would never see my friends again, though. \u0026nbsp;\n\nAnyway, one night, we ended up getting intimate and had a night of passion--\"\n\n  \n\n\"Whoa whoa... dad... too much information...\" Fox adds, holding his hands up.\n\n  \n\n\"Yeah... we don't want to hear about you and someone in my village...\" \u0026nbsp;Link\u0026nbsp;\n\nadds, getting an odd, puzzled look from Fox.\n\n  \n\n\"Alright, skipping the 'best parts'...\" James laughs. \u0026nbsp;\"A few months later, we\u0026nbsp;\n\nhad a son. \u0026nbsp;I decided to stick around and raise him while I tried to get my\u0026nbsp;\n\ncraft repaired. \u0026nbsp;I had responsibilities now, and had to meet them. \u0026nbsp;I wasn't\u0026nbsp;\n\ngoing to just abandon them in the night like so many other deadbeat dads.\"\n\n  \n\n\"That's alright. \u0026nbsp;You're a good guy.\" \u0026nbsp;Fox replies.\n\n  \n\n\"So, I manage to eventually break gravitational pull of the planet, and three\u0026nbsp;\n\ndays before my planned departure, another craft lands. \u0026nbsp;This one's from Earth.\n\nOne of Mario's goombas steps out and explains that he's looking for a member or\n\ntwo of the village to compete in some tournament, apparently the one you set\u0026nbsp;\n\nup, Fox, to determine the most-skilled warriors of the galaxy.\"\n\n  \n\n\"My luck was changed. \u0026nbsp;I was saved, and they gave me a spare engine and warp\u0026nbsp;\n\ndrive to get back to Lylat. \u0026nbsp;My lover bid us farewell and wished us the best of\n\nluck. \u0026nbsp;Link went with the tournament people, while I had to go my own way...\u0026nbsp;\n\nbut as luck would have it, they were going the same way... I just didn't know\u0026nbsp;\n\nthat at the time.\"\n\n  \n\n\"Anyway, I finally make it back to Corneria, and while searching for you, I've\u0026nbsp;\n\nlanded here, the third-annual tournament as it's called...\" \u0026nbsp;James finishes.\n\n  \n\n\"I'm just glad you're back safe. \u0026nbsp;Peppy and I wept when we heard the news you\u0026nbsp;\n\nwere pulled into the black hole...
