{"sf1_id":872030,"sf2_id":"mW337gQm","title":"A Letter from My Love","author":"FunnyFarm","words":287,"posted_at":"2015-06-11T19:37:00.000Z","tags":["Military","Poem","Romance","Suicide","War"],"url":"https://fse.anthro.fr/stories/872030-a-letter-from-my-love","original_url":"https://sofurry.com/s/mW337gQm","image_url":"https://cdn.sofurryfiles.com/submissions/thumbnails/0d/1b/0d1b5341-74f9-4321-8f48-ba4974c42897","description":"#1 of War Poems\n\nPeople often forget that soldiers are not the only casualties in war~","content":"\"A Letter from My Love\"  \n~~Wayne Magill~~  \n  \nI had a darling I loved so dearly  \nHe was brave and strong and left nothing in a shroud,  \nBut when his letter came, he went so cheerily  \nAnd he told me, \"I shall make my country proud!\"  \n  \nOn the day of his going  \nHe kissed my cheek and waved,  \nAnd with pride and pleasure showing  \nLeft for the honor he craved.  \n  \nFor one long year apart  \nHe wrote both day and night,  \nBut in one letter he poured me his heart  \nAnd left me all a-fright.  \n  \nHe talked of gore and guts and blood  \nAnd how his fate was sealed,  \nHe spoke of how the bodies flood  \nEvery medic that they wheeled.  \n  \nHe told me all these horrid things  \nAnd that he'd never make it through,  \nHe said somewhere a sparrow sings  \nOf my limitless love for you.  \n  \nHe admitted all his foolishness  \nAnd confessed of all his fear,  \n\"Nothing here will ever progress.\"  \n\"I love you, dear.\"  \n  \nOn and on, his letter went  \nFor three whole pages long,  \nAnd all the things he aimed to vent  \nWere in his dying song.  \n  \nSoon enough the end was reached  \nAnd I was all in tears,  \nAll the lessons that it teached  \nHad confirmed me of my fears.  \n  \n\n\u0026nbsp;I walked myself to his abode  \nThrough the midday sun,  \nAnd I opened the dresser as it forbode  \nI finally found his gun.  \n  \nAs my last farewell I had bade  \nI pressed the metal to my head,  \nI told myself I shouldn't have stayed  \nBut now my heart was dead.  \n  \nIn one last faint breath  \nI knew my life had gone,  \nBut even in the wakes of death  \nOur love shall live on.  \n  \n\n","series":{"name":"War Poems","next":"https://fse.anthro.fr/stories/872034-i-m-coming-home.json"}}
