I thought about going to lunch earlier, but I knew\nthe Presser Lesser would be there. Instead, I climbed down and jogged to the\nschool yard, just as the other students piled outta there like scurrying flies.\n\n          \"Finally, I\nthought class would never be over,\" a grade cub whined while running out. \"Race\nya home Ben!\" \n          \"Wait up\nKevin!\" \n          \"Stop\npushing!\" \n          \"Freedom!\" \n          Some of the\nstudents spotted me and either waved or nodded to me with a smile, even wagging\ntheir tail amusingly. As I waved to a pack of vulpine girls passing by, I was\nsurprised when one of them, a pretty dark-furred vixen named Georgia, sniffed\nin me direction. \"You smell better, is that...sugar or cinnamon I smell?\" she\nasked in surprise, her ears twitching. \nThank\nya Otet, whatever ya put in that stuff ya otter!\nI simply smiled at her, me\ntail wagging wildly. \"Both I believe.\"\nGeorgia wagged her vixen tail\n'round her and turned to her friends, then walked down the street, leaving me\nto stand by the school gate. \n\"Very smooth Peter!\" \nI perked me ears and turned to\nsee James and Lancie the last ones walking outta the brick building. As they\ncame closer to me, I saw Gavin trail behind them, then noticing the 'yote and\nme human friend rubbing their bottoms with pained expressions on their faces. \n\"What happened to ya two?\" \n\"The Presser Lesser was\nlistening in on us while ya tried to climb in the window, so she whacked me and\nJames with her ruler,\" Gavin explained with a twitching tail and a grunt. \"For\nbeing older than my mama, she's pretty strong for her age.\"\nI straightened out me vest and\nsmiled at the clear, cloudless sky above New York. \"May that crazy fennec never\nchange,\" I giggled like a ninny. \n\"P-Plus,\" James walked with\nLance holding him up, \"sh said that the next time she sees you near the school,\nshe'll call the police and arrest you for trespassing Peter.\" \nI gasped mockingly and stepped\nover a nearby puddle in front of me footpaws. \"I'm so scared I think I'm gonna\nsob like a lady,\" me throat chuckled out. \"So how was school...other than what\nhappened?\"\n\"Besides what happened, we're\nreading a book,\" Lance said after a moment of letting Lance go when he could\nwalk properly again. \"It's from Britain.\"\nI flicked me ears and looked\nat them. \"What would it be then?\" I asked. \n\"David Copperfield.\" \nI paused. \"Who?\"\n\"David Copperfield,\" James\nsaid.\n\"Who?\" I asked again.  \n\"David Copperfield,\" Lance\nsaid for James. \nWere they screwing with me? \"Is\nhe the author of the book?\" I asked confused. \nMe human friend just chuckled.\n\"No Charles Dickens is,\" James said.\n\"Is what?\" I asked (again). \n\"He wrote David Copperfield,\"\nLancie said. \n\"Who did?\" I asked. \n\"Charles Dickens,\" James said\nagain. \nI raised me paw and froze on\nthe sidewalk. \"So who is he?\"\n\"He's a furson who wrote about\nDavid Copperfield,\" James said. \n\"He's the author,\" Gavin\nincluded with a 'yote chuckle. \nI raised an eyebrow and\nfrowned, still confused as 'ell. \"So he wrote a book about another author?\" I\nasked again. \nThe raccoon, the 'yote, and\nthe pale human looked at me funny, then got into a quick whisper huddle. I\ncaught phrases like 'how long' and 'until it gets boring' spoken, and wondered\nif they were referring to me or this David fellow. \nLancie and James, even Gavin\nlooked at me like a hog with wings. \"No no no Peter, David Copperfield is the\nname of a wolf furson who lives in London, and he-\"\n\"-knows the author Charles\nDickens?\" I finished, finally understanding. \nJames choked a bit of\nlaughter, ignoring the strange looks from passing fursons muttering something\ninaudible. \"No Peter!\" he laughed, clutching his stomach with his pinkish\nhands. \"D-D-David Copperfield...is...\"\n\"Oh for the love of...\" Gavin\nimpatiently butted in between us and said loudly, \"David Copperfield is the\nname of a book Charles Dickens wrote.\" The 'yote then smiled. \"There?\nIs that understandable?\n\"Oh,\" I said after a moment.\n\"So David Copperfield all this time is the name of a book by another furson?\" \n\"It's about a boy in London\nwho's mum is marrying a mean gentlewolf,\" James spoke up. \"And it follows David\nas he grows up.\nI looked to me friends and\nscoffed with a playful tone. \"So the Presser Lesser is making ya read that?\" I\nasked. \"Next thing ya know yer gonna tell me he's a magician.\"  ","previous":"https://fse.anthro.fr/stories/906213-the-adventures-of-peter-gray-chapter-21-school.json"}
