Nicobay tried to recall everything that he could remember, and how he could have ended  
up in such a state. His head pained him greatly as he recounted the day's events, but he  
needed to remember. He, Skrien, and Ciel had been out walking for a time trying to find  
something to eat for dinner. They had found a small stream in their exploration and  
decided to have a relaxing swim before continuing their foraging. When the three had  
emerged from the stream, a flash of orange light appeared out of the brush which hit  
Nicobay square in the chest and threw him backwards into something solid, and then  
blackness.  
  

  Nicobay's eyes shot open ignoring the stinging in his brain. Skrien and Ciel were in  
trouble and he had to help them. He quickly surveyed his surroundings and discovered  
immediately that he was in a foreign place. He was in a square room with grayish/bluish  
tiles lining the floor. There was a large metal door to his left that was more than likely  
locked. The walls were painted gray, and on the wall directly in front of him, a large  
rectangular window was situated toward the ceiling that overlooked the rest of the room.  
That window was his chance to break free of whatever enclosure this was.  
  
Nicobay tried to stand up but was held in place. Thinking it was his muscles acting up  
from the soreness, he tried again but to no avail. He turned his head to survey his body  
and he found a plethora of machines hooked up to him. Pulling out his vines, Nicobay  
went to work on dismantling the machines which held him to the ground. After a few  
minutes of no luck, Nicobay began to grow desperate and began thrashing as best he  
could against the machines.  
  

  "Save your strength. It's no use."  
  
Because of his panicked state, Nicobay barely registered the words, but it was enough to  
stop him and find the source of the voice. He moved his head to one of the corners of the  
room and stifled a gasp as he spied what looked like a charizard sitting down staring at  
him. It wasn't the fact that the charizard was a fire type that made Nicobay gasp; he had  
dealt with strong fire pokemon in the past. What startled Nicobay was the charizard's  
color: solid black. As Nicobay lay on the ground, mouth agape, transfixed by the  
pokemon before him, the charizard continued speaking.  
  
"Yeah, I know I'm different; you don't have to keep staring."  
  
Finding his voice, Nicobay answered, "Sorry, it's just that it was unexpected... If you  
don't mind my asking, why are you that color?"  
  
"I don't mind, and to answer your question, it's because of random luck or so I'm told.  
I'm not entirely sure myself, but I heard Team Rocket say something about one out of  
every thousand pokemon is born a unique color, and I was one of those ‘lucky' ones."  
  

  "So, who's Team Rocket?"  
  
"You don't know? They're the reason you're here. This is their base and they want to  
observe you and run tests on unique pokemon."  
  
"But why me?"  
  
"Isn't it obvious? You're not like other bayleefs, and you know it. I've seen others, and  
not one of them has a star on their heads or a dark coloration as you do."  
  
Nicobay knew it was true. The entire reason he is colored that way is because of his  
parents. Normally when two pokemon mate, their offspring naturally takes the form of  
the mother, regardless of the father. However, Nicobay was unique in that he has the  
form of his mother, but he has some coloration and abilities from his father. Team  
Rocket must have noticed this and captured him and his parents to discern why Nicobay  
was different.  
  
Nicobay continued, "What kind of tests are they going to do to us?"  
  
"You name it, they'll probably do it: stamina, speed, strength, energy, elemental power,  
heart rate, brain waves, and even sexual."  
  
Nicobay's interest perked up at the last word. He responded, "What kind of sexual tests?  
What use could they have with those?"  
  

  "They probably do tests on sperm and eggs."  
  
"I still don't understand what good can come from those tests that they can't get from  
normal pokemon."  
  
"Well, there must be something in one of those two things that caused me to be this color  
or for you to be the way you are. Team Rocket wants to know if there is any advantage  
to having us ‘unique' pokemon rather than normal pokemon. If they find out anything  
that would give them an advantage over others, they will find a way to mass-produce us  
so they can amass an army of better pokemon."  
  
"That's horrible... Um... hate to randomly switch topics, but do you think you could get  
me out of these machines? It's starting to get uncomfortable."  
  
"Sure thing; they've probably already got the data they want from you anyway, so I'm  
sure there's no harm for either of us if I help you out."  
  
The charizard stood up and walked over to Nicobay and began to undo the machines that

charizard had said, and a plethora of questions came to mind.  
  

  He started up another conversation by asking, "So... what's your name?"  
  
"You can call me Charc. My parents thought they were clever and they named me

"I'm Nicobay. You seem to know a lot about what's happening around here. How'd you  
get here and how long have you been here?"  
  
"Team Rocket ambushed me and my parents about three days ago. One of the guys took  
a liking to me and actually captured me in a pokeball. So even if you or they manage to  
escape, I'm bound to stay here..."  
  
"Is there any way to free you so that you could escape with us?"  
  
"I don't know of one unless my new trainer sets me free himself"  
  
"I'll find a way to help you out."  
  
Charc didn't respond and finished unhooking the apparatuses and Nicobay stood up  
finally and winced greatly as his body struggled to be supported by his legs.  
  
Charc said, "Sorry about that... I didn't know you were a grass type when my trainer told  
me to use my flamethrower. If I had known it would hurt you so badly, I would have

  "So it was you that attacked me and my family by the stream!?"  
  
"Yeah, again I'm sorry. The three of you were near water so I just assumed you were  
water types so I gave it my all for that attack."  
  
"It's alright. You were only doing what you were ordered to do. I'll be fine eventually."  
  
The two were interrupted by the large door opening rapidly. Before the two could react,  
Skrien, Ciel and two normal charizards were pushed through the doorway. All four of  
them appeared to be unconscious, and once they were in the room, the door slammed  
shut. Nicobay and Charc ran to their parents to make sure they were alright. As they  
reached their parents, a voice sounded throughout the room, "They'll be fine in a bit. We  
just sedated them so we could transport them in here without any trouble. You see, we're  
not mean or coldhearted. We simply want to know and understand you. On that note, we  
will begin our next test whenever they come around." The voice went away as quickly as  
it came, and Nicobay and Charc could only assume it had been one of the Team Rocket

the way of the blast just in time for the scorching inferno to smash into the wall behind  
him. When he landed, he could feel his leg muscles seize up from the jolt he received  
from the door earlier. Before Nicobay could say anything, the trainer shouted again,  
"Flamethrower again, and don't miss this time!"  
  
Again Charc opened his gullet and shot a line of fire in Nicobay's direction. Nicobay  
tried to get out of the way again, but his legs disagreed and the attack hit bringing  
Nicobay down to his knees. As he struggled to regain his footing, his eyes widened as a  
third jet of flame was fired in his direction. Nicobay couldn't do anything to avoid it and  
he was hit square in the chest and thrown back into the wall behind him. As Nicobay  
struggled to stand up, the trainer spoke up again.  
  

  "Hmmm, you're not as strong as the boss originally thought you'd be. You can't even  
dodge a single attack. I guess we're done here. I'll let you recover and I'll be back  
later." The trainer reached into his pocket and pulled out what looked like a berry before  
continuing, "Eat this and you should recover almost immediately."  
  
The trainer tossed the berry aside and pulled out the pokeball again and got ready to call  
back Charc. Charc shouted, "Nicobay, help me!"  
  
The trainer said, "Charizard, return." Nicobay sprang to his feet summoning every last  
bit of strength he had left. He rotated the leaf on top of his head once and shot a razor  
leaf attack at the trainer. The bladed leaf flew through the air with remarkable speed and  
hit the pokeball in the trainer's hand, splitting it in two. As the two pieces flew out of the  
trainer's hand, he yelled, "You little bastard, I'll get you for that."  
  
Nicobay screamed, "Charc, now!"  
  
Charc turned on the spot and faced the man. His eyes burned as fire began filling his  
maw. The man realized that he had no more control over the fire dragon and fear flooded  
his body. Charc opened his mouth and unleashed a torrent of flame in the man's  
direction. He screamed in fright and dove out of the way of the attack and sprinted for  
the door. He opened the door and jumped out into the hallway. As the door began  
closing, Charc sprang forward and grasped it with his claws and wrenched it from the  
hinges, tossing it to the ground. After the door was dislodged, Charc turned around and  
grabbed the berry on the floor, bringing it over to Nicobay.  
  

  Charc said, "I'm sorry about those flamethrowers. I tried to tone down their power as  
best I could, but that man had already seen my true power and he would have known that  
I was holding back."  
  
Nicobay chewed the berry and swallowed it before responding, "It's alright; you couldn't  
prevent it. I'm just glad you are free now. Wow... that berry worked. I already feel a  
hundred percent better."  
  
"That's good to hear. Also, thank you so much for freeing me, but we've gotta get out of  
here."  
  
Nicobay nodded in response and the two sprinted out of the room as an alarm began  
sounding. As the two ran down the hallway, Nicobay said, "Where do you think the  
others are?"  
  
Charc responded, "They should be just around this next corner. When that man was my  
trainer, he showed me around a bit."  
  
As the two turned the corner, a Team Rocket member blocked their path. He threw a  
pokeball out and a vaporeon emerged before the two. Charc shot a fire blast down the  
hallway, and the vaporeon shot a water gun in response. As the two attacks collided in  
midair, steam exploded throughout the corridor. Nicobay sprinted forward through the  
mist and slammed his body directly into the vaporeon, knocking him backwards into his  
trainer. Charc then fanned his wings rapidly, blowing away the steam and creating a gust  
that hit the vaporeon and his trainer, sending both of them into the wall behind them. The  
trainer hit his head knocking him out, and the vaporeon had fainted from the battle.  
Charc ran up to a door in the hallway and tapped the surface. When he was certain there  
was no electricity on this side of the door, he pounded away at it with his fists until the  
door caved in to the room. As the bent-up metal fell to the ground, the figures of Skrien  
and Ciel could be seen in the room.  
  

  Charc yelled, "Come on! We've got to hurry if we're gonna get out of here!"  
  
The two sprinted toward the door as Charc turned around and began pounding away at  
the other door in the hallway. As the door finally gave way, Charc spied Darius and  
Seria inside before screaming, "Mom! Dad! We've gotta get out of here now!"  
  
As the two charizard parents joined the rest of the group, Charc led the other five  
pokemon through the maze of hallways until they finally came to a giant door where  
another Team Rocket member stood. The man shook from fear on the spot as the six  
powerful pokemon stood before him ready to attack at a moment's notice. He shouted,  
"Please don't hurt me!" Darius took a step forward, his tail flame erupting on the spot  
and he roared a roar that shook the entire facility. The man whimpered and opened the  
door behind him before turning to sprint away from the angry group.  
  
As the door opened, light washed over them and they sprinted outside. Once outside,  
Darius, Seria, and Charc turned around and each took a deep breath before shooting  
flames into the building that snaked down the narrow corridors. Explosions could be  
heard from inside as the three turned away from the facility and sprinted after the others.  
The six sprinted into the trees and bushes until they were all out of breath and seemed  
content with the distance they had put between them and Team Rocket's headquarters.  
  

  Ciel spoke first, "Charc, I can't tell you how gracious we are that you helped us escape  
from that dreadful place."  
  
Charc responded, "Don't give me all the credit. It was your son who broke the pokeball  
and broke the tie between me and my trainer. If he hadn't done that, we all would have  
still been stuck there. I still can't thank you enough Nicobay for saving me."  
  
Nicobay blushed a little, "Aw, think nothing of it. We all worked as a team to break out."  
  
Darius said, "Regardless, we owe all of you our thanks. We should probably head home  
now. Team Rocket is not going to be happy and it would only thrill them to death if they  
could somehow find all of us in one spot. Where do you live? We can't just depart and  
never see each other again."  
  
The two groups exchanged information, and after they were all certain that they could  
find each other again, they said their good byes. The three charizards flapped their wings  
and rose into the air above the trees and flew out of sight. The other three waved their  
good byes again before deciding to head home for themselves.  
  

  Skrien said, "Alright, we've had enough adventure for one day; time to head home."  
Skrien started walking away from the group before stopping and turning around. After  
he walked another couple feet, he stopped and looked around before turning to the group  
with a puzzled expression on his face. As Nicobay surveyed the surroundings, he  
realized that he had never seen this area before. The three looked at each other confused  
until Nicobay finally said, "Umm... where's home?"
