A high pressure low paying job, friends in bad places and a home less than it should be.
The setting is owned by TicklefishMcGee
The characters used are mine.
A few lazy hours passed. Dienza spent most of it in his room strumming out scales and a few
experimental rhythms on his guitar, while Nereen reclined on the sofa in the living room and read
one of her old books. It was eleven o'clock before Dienza realized his fingers were starting to feel
strained. He decided to stop, pushing too much further might jerk one of his claws out of place and
snap a string.
He laid back on his bed and stretched out, being startled a moment later when his phone chimed.
He rolled over and picked it up before sitting up again. He had received a text from Spiika, asking if
he was home. He replied yes and laid back down. At the exact moment he hit the mattress, the
doorbell rang.
'Fucking Spiika.' Dienza rolled his eyes and stood back up. He got to the hallway and saw that
Nereen had beaten him to the front door. She opened it and the yellow furred leona stood just
outside, smiling and dressed in her favourite jeans shorts and a loose fitting white shirt. And...
'Oh my...' Nereen exclaimed. 'Spiika, what did you do to your hair?'
'Oh umm...' Spiika paused, not sure how to answer. Her hair had been dyed a vibrant red instead
of its usual ginger blonde hue, and gelled up into a tall spiky style. 'I may have been rather
intoxicated when I made this decision...'
Dienza said nothing but wore a bemused smile as he came to stand beside his mother. Nereen
was silent for a few more moments before speaking again. 'Well, I must say the style somewhat suits
you.'
'Wait, really?' Spiika seemed surprised to hear that.
'Oh yes.' Nereen nodded. 'The red goes with your fur nicely. And it makes you look very fiery. A
Metal band's drummer should have that attitude about them right?'
'Fair point.' Dienza agreed. It'd be a great look on stage.'
'Huh...' Spiika ran a hand through the flame shaped hairdo and thought for a few seconds before
smiling. 'Then I guess I'm keeping it.'
'What brings you here?' Dienza asked, gesturing for her to come in. Nereen stepped aside but
Spiika stayed on the front porch and pointed over her shoulder.
'Actually, I was wondering if I could ask a favour?' She responded. 'Dad tripped over the floor tom
and cracked the shots over the kit taking up the corner of the living room. I know this place isn't
much bigger than mine, but he's threatening to sell the whole thing if I don't do something about it.'
'You wanna put it here?' Nereen asked her. 'That's alright.'
'Only if it's not in the way.' Spiika said apologetically. 'I really don't want to impose on you or
anything.'
'It's no trouble.' Nereen assured her with a smile. 'There's only a TV and a sofa in there anyway,
we can put it in the corner if we just move the TV cupboard across. It'll be fine.'
'Okay then.' Dienza clapped his hands. 'I'm gonna venture a guess, we'll have to carry that whole
setup here on foot won't we?' Spiika said nothing, but stared back at him with a grin and clasped her
hands together in a mock pleading gesture. She already knew Dienza wouldn't pass up the chance to
have another instrument in the house.
'Okay kids.' Nereen said with a giggle. 'I'll have some snacks put together when you get back.
Have fun!'

Dienza's arms were sore by the time the pair had made it back. He had chivalrously volunteered
to carry the bass drum and tom toms in one hand, and the floor tom in the other. Spiika had made a
remark about not needing to prove his size since she already well knew, to which he had responded
simply with "Fuck making two trips."
The sweet scent of hot chocolate greeted them as they cumbersomely lugged the pieces inside.
Dienza collapsed onto the couch in exhaustion and sighed in relief. Spiika set down the various
cymbals and began to arrange the parts together as Dienza watched, taking notes. Nereen walked
into the room a few minutes later carrying three cups between her hands.
'Oh thank you.' Spiika smiled as Nereen offered her one of the cups. Dienza took the second
proffered cup as well, his ears pricking up in curiosity as he noticed the small patch of fur trying to
conceal itself in his mother's hair.
     'What is that?' He asked.
'Oh, the micen?' Nereen grinned. 'I caught him trying to steal the chocolate, so he's staying with
me for a while. That's all.' She tilted her head a little, making the small form slip and almost fall from
her head. Now exposed, Dienza recognized the micen as the male who had been with the female he
had caught this morning. He grinned and turned back towards Spiika. She had finished setting up the
drum kit in the corner, and now sat upon the stool behind it savouring the hot drink Nereen had
given her.
'You're gonna have to show me the basics.' Dienza said with a grin. 'I'm gonna play with it, so I
might as well know what I'm doing.'
'Maybe you should stick with the axe?' Spiika teased. 'This is a highly complicated process.'
'Clearly not.' Dienza retorted. 'You manage it.' Spiika's next jab was interrupted by Nereen.
'Play. Can you show me?' She sat on the sofa beside her son and looked at the young woman
hopefully.
'Suure.' Spiika grinned slyly. 'Can I have the micen? If you're not going to eat him? There aren't
any in our house anymore. Dad called the pest control guys and they gassed the walls. It was a cheap
job but it seemed to have worked.'
'Good luck with that.' Dienza giggled. 'She's practically keeping them all as pets.'
'Sure you can.' Nereen said to Spiika. 'But not until I've seen two full solos from you.'
'What?' Dienza exclaimed. 'Then why did you tell me not to hurt them? And since when do you
hunt?'
'I never said that.' Nereen retorted, giggling as the micen in her hair tried to find a way out of his
predicament. 'I just said you're taking them too seriously. And I didn't hunt this one. He tripped in
the pantry. All I did was pick him up.' She reached up to find the micen, mistiming her grab and
knocking him down her face. He landed with a splash and a squeak of pain in her drink.
'Ooh, that beats a marshmallow.' Spiika laughed. Nereen laughed as well and took a sip of her
drink, squinting her eyes as the micen took the opportunity to crawl out of the hot liquid onto her
nose and muzzle. He was panting and shivering in distress. Dienza was surprised at his mother's
reaction, after all the time she spent sticking up for the little runts she seemed to be enjoying the
little guy's distress as much as Spiika.
'Spiika, solo while he still has chocolate in his fur!'
'Right!' The drummer girl twirled the sticks in her fingers and broke into a solo that made Dienza
want to jump up and fist pump incessantly. It lasted thirty seconds, after which the girl panted and
drooped backwards against the wall. 'I think I overdid that one.'
'Okay.' Nereen replied. 'I guess I can-' She blinked in surprise as the micen on her forehead leaped
clear and landed on the arm of the couch. He bolted, barely evading the leona's swiping grip and
scurrying down the side of the couch.
'Nooo!' Spiika put her palm to her forehead and laughed. 'I'll get him later. Oh, that's another
thing... Is it alright if I stay the night?'
There was a moment of quiet before Nereen spoke. 'You didn't get kicked out of home did you?'
'No...' Spiika replied. 'I just... don't really wanna see Dad tonight. He already knows I probably
won't come home until tomorrow. Or the day after if I can manage it.'
Nereen sighed and looked over at Dienza. Dienza took a deep breath and nodded after a
moment's thought. 'I don't know if we have any spare sheets.'
'Why are things turning sour for you?' Nereen asked. 'What's wrong?'
'He's never been a great dad.' Spiika sighed. 'I'm just... I'm just sick of it all, you know?' She stood
up and walked around, shifting nervously. Dienza stood and wrapped an arm around Spiika's
shoulder.
'You can sleep in my bed.' He said. 'I mean, it's big enough for both of us.'
'Just like old times huh?' Spiika sighed, wrapping her arms around his waist and burying her head
in his chest. 'Thank you.'

The rest of the day was spent with Spiika teaching Dienza the basics of drum playing, an exercise
which increasingly frustrated her as he had little sense for the instrument. Eventually he resorted to
his guitar to augment her own drum playing. Nereen listened to them the whole time, even as she
adjourned to the kitchen to begin preparing dinner. The three of them enjoyed the steaks Dienza
had bought, and despite a thorough search of the kitchen, Spiika failed to find the micen that had
escaped earlier.
Nothing was on the TV that night, but they left it on for a few hours anyway. Some lame sitcom
provided a light hearted background noise as the three of them talked about whatever crap came
across their minds. By nine that night, Nereen had bid them goodnight and gone to bed. Dienza sat
slouched on the end of the sofa, cradling Spiika's head on his chest.
'So...' Dienza began softly. 'What did you end up doing last night?' He wrapped his arm under her
head, pulling her face towards his.
'I... gave two guys hand jobs and did a lot of... Mmf.' She answered nervously before trying to look
away from him.
'A lot of?' Dienza pulled her closer again.
     'Catmint.' She sighed. 'Sorry.'
'I thought you were getting off that?' He slumped, letting her head fall back into his lap. She sat
up and turned around to face him before grabbing hold of his chest fur and squeezing.
'It isn't that easy alright?' She hissed, mindful of keeping her voice low to avoid waking Nereen. 'I
try to behave, but everything just sucks! Dad's a screw-up, my job sucks, I gotta basically sell myself
to have any fun and... And I miss you.'
'...I miss you too.' Dienza looked back at her. 'But I'm not living this life with you. I know things are
hard around here. But... You just have to be better than that. Be stronger. Be that cocky lass I work
with. Not the desperate slut who gives handies for drugs.'
He winced as her claws suddenly dug into his chest. A look of anger briefly flashed across her
features before she fell forward into a hug around his shoulders. Dienza wasn't sure what to do, he'd
never seen her this... compromised.
'Alright. Bed time.' He stood up, lifting her with him and guiding her into the bedroom. 'We both
have to get to work tomorrow so we should probably get to sleep.' He sat her down on the bed and
turned away for a moment to plug his phone into its charger. When he turned back around she was
standing, her clothes on the floor beside her and looking at him lustfully.
'I've wanted so much to be able to sleep beside you again.' She said, stepping closer as he
continued to stare in dumbfounded confusion. Her arms clasped around him and her lips lifted to
meet his.
'Mmf?' He moaned in surprise and bewilderment, but slowly his arms lifted and returned her
embrace. It had been a little over a year now since he had decided their relationship was over. His
mother had been so disappointed, but she never knew how far Spiika had sunk. Dienza had tried to
convince himself that they couldn't work until she had more respect for herself. He thought he could
move on, but he had never even considered dating another girl. Spiika had landed a job at the same
place as him not long afterwards. They had managed to preserve a friendship, but he had always
suspected she was just hoping to get him back. No matter how much she tried to pretend otherwise.
Then he felt it. The overwhelming desire he had to care for her again, to love her like he used to.
Soon following it was the burning sensation in his loins, something she felt from him in that same
moment. She stepped backwards and pulled him on top of her onto the bed.

There was no doubt anymore. He missed her. And whatever decision he reached later, for now
they both deserved this pleasure. They both needed it.
