Sam woke to Michael's voice in the halls, he looked over and noticed that Sapphire had returned, and was snoring quietly and murmured in her sleep. He nuzzled her and she opened her eyes. They got up and walked out of the room. Michael smiled at them when he saw them.
“Hi, it's time for us to leave." He told them.
They nodded and went to put on their armor. After Sapphire had finished putting on her armor, she looked over and noticed Sam was gazing at her.
“What?" She blushed.
“Your armor makes you so beautiful, and sexy, and just plain gorgeous." He mumbled.
She blushed harder, and smiled. He walked up and kissed her, passionately, then he finished putting on his own armor. They walked back to the living room, and Michael opened a portal. They quickly stepped through it and looked around. The city was in a massive cave, and a strange temple was at its center. Michael led the group through the main gates and watched as the civilians stared at them, with fear in their eyes. Michael stepped into the main square and nodded towards one of the elders.
“Alright everyone, it's time to leave, we need to clear the streets, leave no one behind." The elder called.
Michael walked into the temple, and they found a nest with a few eggs in it.
“These one's lost their parents, and it's out job to get them to the ML to be raised in good care." Michael told them.
“That one looks a little big." Sapphire pointed to a large, black egg.
Michael looked over at the egg. “Indeed, it does, this seems strange.".
He lifted the large egg, and gasped. “How is this possible? this is an eldritch egg."
Sapphire looked confused. “I thought eldritch and ethereal eggs aren't supposed to be naturally born."
“Not naturally, this egg was tampered with, before it was lain." Michael replied, horrified.
A loud thump sounded from the edge of the city.
“The horde has arrived." Michael said as screams rang across the city.
They collected the rest of the eggs and excited the temple. Sam gasped and watched as the walls on the far side of the city collapsed.
“That's it, I'm ordering the complete evacuation of this dimension." Michael spoke.
He quickly opened a portal, just as an elder approached them.
“The evacuation is complete, just in time." He said to Michael.
Michael nodded, and motioned for the elder to follow them as he stepped through the portal. They stepped into an eggcare center, and placed the eggs in their new incubation spots,
“I'm going to keep the eldritch one, it is probably too dangerous here." He told the group.
A black dragoness appeared next to them and nuzzled Michael, before staring at the egg for a minute.
“This is very strange; I never thought such a thing was possible." She mumbled.
“Mom?" Sapphire exclaimed.
“Mom?" Sam cut in, confused. “This is your mom?"
“Yes, June and I have been in a nearby dimension for the last couple of years." Bea explained.
They walked through a hall, and found another platform. Michael pressed a handful of buttons again and they were teleported to another strange place. They looked out a wide window and watched the slow rotation of their planet.
“Where are we?" Sam asked.
“The bridge, it's the command center for the ship." Sapphire whispered to him.
“Have you been here before?" He asked
She smirked. “It's not named the ISS Sapphire for nothing."
He looked around, stunned. “He named a ship after you?"
“No, but I was a small hatchling when Michael was deciding which ship to station here so he picked the one that happened to be named the same as me. This ship is far older than I am, by billions of years." She explained.
Sam nodded, and they stepped up to the massive window. The stared at its surface for a while, as Michael talked with some generals around a table. Eventually, Sam and Sapphire walked back to the table and sat down next to Michael.
“The evacuation is proving more difficult than expected, not only are some of the civilians in disbelief about the whole civilization, but others are refusing to leave their ancestral homes." A general spoke.
Michael shook his head. “They will have to figure it out themselves."
They talked for a while, before Sam and Sapphire returned to their home. Sapphire's family was watching TV, Sam hadn't noticed it before, and looked over to see some cartoons playing for the younger kids. The aunts greeted him with their usual looks, and Sam surprisingly found himself already used to them. He ate a quick meal with his mate before they took a nap.
Three Months Later.
Sam walked down a path on the spaceship, his mate had rushed off earlier, and he just received word to find Michael's home. He walked up to a door marked with a strange symbol, and knocked on it. He smiled when Sapphire answered and invited him in.
“What happened?" He asked her.
“The egg hatched, the one he kept." She told him.
They walked into the bedroom, and Michael was curled up. Sam couldn't see in the dark very well, but he did notice a small black shape sleeping against Michael. He looked over at his daughter and smiled.
“Hey you two, meet Liam." He told them.
Sapphire smiled at the little hatchling. “Did you find out what caused his mutation?"
“It was an eldritch god, it has to be, the same one that taught the humans how to make that crystal."
“Is it still here?" She replied.
“No, he left a long time ago, but he left spells behind for some reason." Michael told her.
She nodded. “Is he going to be, okay?"
“The first eldritch dragon of his species? If I raise him, he should be more than okay." Michael answered.
Twenty years later.
Sapphire watched as her mate played with their children. She smiled and sighed, her growing belly wiggling a bit. The sun was shining brightly, and the weather was beautiful, Michael had definitely chosen the best planet for them to live on. She watched as Michael and Liam landed next to them, and smiled at them.
“Hi, what's up?" She asked them.
“Not much, just checking in, were going back to Providence in an hour, and wanted to make sure you were okay before we left." Michael told her.
“You're going back?" She gasped.
“We have to clear it out, we can't risk any rulebreakers entering the planet and spreading the infection to others." He explained.
She nodded. “I understand, we're fine, but I keep having cravings for those special fruits."
Michael smiled. “Pomegranates, it kind of runs in your family."
He snapped his claws and a basket of the fruit appeared in front of her.
“Eat them, they're good for you." He told her.
Liam smiled at his sister, then turned back to talk to Sam, Sapphire watched him go, and turned to Michael.
“How's the mate hunt going?" She asked
“Not good, when they find out he's an eldritch dragon they get scared and run off." Michael sighed. “Somebody will see past it; I know it will happen eventually."
Michael lowered his head and kissed his daughter on her forehead.
“Love you, we might be gone a few weeks, but we should be back before you lay."
She smiled. “Love you too, see you then."
Michael looked over at Liam, then took off with him. The two black dragons flew off and started heading towards a mountain range.
“The place where I was lain." Liam mumbled to himself
“We won't be going to that particular city just yet; we need to scout out some of the larger hordes." Michael told him.
Liam nodded. “I just can't help it, I'm too curious about my heritage."
“Your heritage is that you're my son, if not by blood, then by time. If you continue to dig, you will find yourself surrounded by eldritch evils."
“I know, but I want to find the cause of my suffering, and maybe, just maybe, find a way to reverse it."
Michael looked over at him. “There is no reversing it, it is who you are, there is nothing that can change it."
“You can change it; you could always have changed it."
“Liam, you know I don't use my magic on things like that, the other things you have seen are people changing genders or species, not removing their magic." Michael looked at him worriedly. “Everybody else will just have to deal with the fact that you are unique. Whatever spell you have, if it's any of the possible ones I found, it can't be passed on, you can live a normal life."
“By myself." Liam grumbled.
“You have been looking in the wrong places, people that go to balls and public events like that aren't extraordinary, they are looking for ordinary. You need to find somebody unique like yourself."
Liam nodded, and looked out over the horizon. “I'm glad you found me."
“I'm glad I found you too, you know that I have raised many, many others, I have seen everything, you can find love, and you will."
“I found a spell that can trace me to my real mother." He blurted out.
Michael raised an eyebrow. “The elicitus one?"
He nodded.
“That one is dangerous, and very difficult to perfect." Michael replied
“Why haven't you used it on me?" He asked.
“Because I don't go looking for the parents of those I adopt, there is no point in rising hope, when they have likely died years ago."
“Your code is very detailed."
“It took billions of years to perfect, whenever I found the parents of those I adopt, it never goes well. The way I raised you, and all your brothers and sisters, is a way that nobody else would want their children to be raised. I trained you to fight, to be a leader, a fighter, and to strive for greatness. But to others it looks like I raised you to be another one of my soldiers, or just another general. The legends that come of your older siblings are usually filled with fighting, and suffering, and struggle, but that is how you become a legend, but nobody ever sees that but other legends. The story of Ero for example…."
“Yeah, I remember that one."
“He fell in love, and that girl got captured, and he used my teachings to go through suffering and hardship to get her back. People only see the countless tales over billions of years, they don't know of your siblings that chose not to fight, or never needed too. You may choose to fight, to struggle, and to bleed for something, or you can choose peace, and have a good life. I make sure that you are prepared for either decision, and that is seen as a terrible way to grow up."
“But I had a good childhood, you always made me happy."
“Of course, I brought you happy memories, and a nice childhood, but others just see me, raising another puppet, they don't know of your free will."
Liam sighed.
“Such is the way of an ethereal prince." Michael added. “But you can choose to leave the dimension, and travel far away from the societal norm of fearing the unique, find a mate in the ML."
“And leave Sapphire?"
“She'll be fine, she has Sam, me, and her blood family, she loves you and would like you to be with her, but she's a mother, and that takes priority. You will understand when you have kids."
“If"
“You will, I will try my best to make you happy."
They landed in a recently constructed town.
“What is this called again?" Liam asked
“A dock, I am using it to produce air defense ships that are better designed to defend lower tech societies."
“You're bringing the fortress program here?"
“Yeah, I think it will be necessary for the new main dimension for the species."
Liam nodded, and Michael stepped through into a square and opened a portal. The two black dragons stepped through it and looked around the grey landscape. Liam looked around and watched as a massive group of zombies trudged past them.
“This horde has been the largest reported, and it walks over thirty miles a day." Michael told him.
“How do we stop it?"
“We need to get in front of, and stop it. But first we need to investigate a strange surge in eldritch magic at a temple nearby." Michael told him.
They took off, and flew towards a large structure, its spires reached up into the grey sky.
“Isn't this a temple of ethereal worship?" He asked.
“It was." Michael replied. “But I sense a large amount of eldritch power here."
Liam watched as his father changed to his eldritch form, his spines growing long and ending in a sharp metal point. They walked into the basement and looked around, before approaching a strange pedestal that contained a large black core. Michael turned to read some inscriptions on the walls, but Liam couldn't turn his head away from the strange core, it was almost like it was calling to him. He walked up to the core and reached his paw out.
“I can't, wait, Liam, DON'T TOUCH IT" He yelled out,
It was to late, Liam grabbed the core and it dissolved, turning into a sphere of shadow. The shadow then flew into Liam's chest, and he vanished. Michael rushed forward, charging his magic, but his son was already gone. He couldn't tell where he went, so he sent out an eldritch pulse, searching for him. The pulse returned to him, telling him that Liam was no longer near him, not even within the cell, or any cell his forms are in. Michael immediately teleported out of the temple, and began his search.
Sapphire looked up when she heard her father's voice in her head.
“Sapphire!" He called.
“I'm here, what is it?" She replied.
“Liam's missing, some unknown eldritch core has transferred him far away." He told her. “I think he might be corrupted."
“How? Who could have done that?"
“The same eldritch deity, I suspect Liam is with him now." He answered. “I am adding more protection spells to you. He can no longer see, hear, feel, or sense you in any way, or Sam, or the kids."
“Are you sure that's necessary?"
“Yes, if he's corrupted, he might try to find you."
She looked over at Sam. “What are you doing?"
“I'm searching, I'm going to trace the eldritch magic, and try to track down the person responsible. Stay with Sam, he will keep you safe."
“I will, find Liam, I have a feeling that the eldritch god responsible for all of this planned it out with this outcome in mind."
“I agree, and I will find out, I love you, goodbye."
Sapphire sighed and looked over at her mate, he was sleeping, their kids were spread around the cave they have been living in. Two of her daughters were curled up against her, while the rest were sleeping in random positions around the cave. She lowered her head and fell asleep.
The morning light shining through the mouth of the cave made Sapphire open her eyes, she looked around and noticed that only one of her daughters remained, and was curled up next to her. She smiled at the young sky-blue dragoness, and watched her sleep. After a while she needed to go to the bathroom, so she groaned and got up from the nest. Her movements woke her daughter, making her jump and help her to her feet. Sapphire smiled at her, and nodded, before walking out of the cave to stretch and enjoy the sun on her wings. Sam noticed his mate's wings stretching out and landed beside her. She nuzzled him, purring.
“Morning." She mumbled.
“It's five past noon." Sam smiled.
“Then why was Launa still sleeping?"
“She's taking night shifts, something about protecting us during the night."
“Michael told me Liam is missing, some eldritch core might have possessed him." Sapphire blurt out.
“What? How?"
“We don't know, but he gave us some extra spells and told us to stay here."
Sam nodded. “Then I will have to stock up on some supplies."
