The Rowans and The Greys Chapter 2: Captain Grey
#2 of The Rowans and The Greys
Captain Kody "Sly" Grey was panting as he walked from the flight line and back into Base Ops. The thirty year old Captain had a smile on his face and plugs in his ears and decidedly non-regulation mirrored sunglasses on his face as he b-lined his way towards the tall brick building.
He was covered from neck to boots in green; a green flight suit, a green un-zipped g-suit over the legs of the flight suit, a green MOLLE survival vest, and green suede combat boots which everyone had to wear while flying. His helmet was clutched under one arm, the white orb looking thing had a big red fox head painted in the middle of it, while his breath mask dangled off it from two hooks. It was one hell of a day for flying.
He'd just walked into Base Ops, giving the Airmammal behind the desk a wave as he'd made his way to start filling out the necessary post-flight paperwork, when he felt his phone start vibrating. The young no-stripe Airmammal gave her superior a nod as if to say, "Take your call, it'll still be here when you get back." Kody just smiled and mothed, "Thanks," as he pulled the phone out of his pocked and headed towards the equipment room.
"Hello," he said, not bothering to look at the number. "Yes, is this Mr. Ray Schaiferhund," the voice asked. Kody blinked a few times before answering, "You got him, but I haven't gone by that name in almost a year."
There was a pause on the other end, "But you are... er... were Ray Schaiferhund, correct?"
"Yeah, why?"
"This is Michael Rowan with Rowan, Rowan, and Mousekewitz. I'm calling about your late father's will."
Kody blinked a few times. Rowan? As in Chris Rowan? His mother had mentioned that his real father's sire was a lawyer, but it would be a little bit too coincidental. The tod did have a test though, "Which father? I've lost two."
There was another pause on the phone, "Uhm... were you ever listed on the other father's will?"
"No. Chris didn't seem to care I existed."
There was another long, very awkward pause, "Then... I'm calling about your... adopted father's will."
"What about it," the fox asked as he started to disrobe from the g-suit.
Michael continued, "As you know, Johan's ex-wife has been pushing for litigation on the grounds that his last will and testament was written and signed while not in sound mind or judgement. I've been reviewing her case, but she doesn't have any grounds. We believe that it will be thrown out of court because the matter of inheritance was settled during the divorce proceedings fourty years prior. Not to mention the will was signed and notarized about ten years prior to their accident."
"So what you're saying is that she's about to waste a lot of money over a case she can't possibly win because she signed everything away when Johan and her split," Kody said in a more matter-of-fact tone. It was something that often rubbed people the wrong way, but his parents had always demanded the truth and he rarely sugar coated anything when it was serious. "Better to just rip the band aid off than to try to peel it away gently," he'd said a few times.
"Something like that," the voice replied, "Uhm... Mr. Schaiferhund, most of our records still have you listed under that name. Did you have your name legally changed? If so, we need to update our records."
"Yeah, I changed it to Kody Grey about six months after the accident," he replied as he walked out of the Equipment room and back towards the desk in Base Operations.
There was another long pause over the phone before a, "Thank you, sir. I'll have our records updated. Please feel free to call us back if you have any questions. Be sure to ask for me since I'm working the case."
"You're welcome, Michael," Kody said before hanging up. The no-stripe Airmammal behind the desk looked over at him with a curious look, but she was a little too embarrassed to ask the officer a question. The fox just chuckled as he looked at the rabbit who was obviously a member of the Hopps battalion both because of her coloring and the last name of, "Hopps," embroidered on the name plate over her right breast. "Dad's ex wants to fight a war she can't win," he said with a chuckle as he jotted down the last few numbers onto the paper.
The doe bunny just nodded her head as her superior put the pencil down and headed towards the Heritage room for a snack and a well-deserved drink after the four hour long flight.
