My son, the police dog

a quickie- A slacker applies for a job to get his mother off his back, and it ends up changing his life.

I stood in line with a dozen other men. Each of us naked except for the collar and vest embroidered with the word Police on them. When I heard the Police department was hiring this isn't exactly what I had in mind.

When I got up this morning, my mother was yelling at me again. She wanted me to get off my butt and look for a job. I, on the other hand, was planning to hang out with my boyfriend. She mumbled something about priorities, but I just tuned her out as I stumbled into the bathroom to take a shower.

I had just graduated from high school, and didn't have anything lined up. College wasn't my thing, and I didn't think my grades would get me into one anyway. Even trade school seemed out of reach.

My mother continued to nag me as I got dressed and came down for breakfast. I could feel her gaze burning a hole in my head as I sat at the kitchen table. I wished she would give it up as I poured myself a big bowl of Cap'n Crunch.

I was about a 3rd of the way through when I had had enough. I slammed my spoon down on the table and said, "Fine, Fine, if it's that important to you I'll get a job!" I hoped that would make her happy. At least she let me finish my cereal in peace.

After throwing my bowl in the sink, I put on my socks and shoes and headed out the door. It felt good to be out of the house and out from under my mothers thumb. I know she meant well, but she could at least let me enjoy the summer before giving me so much flack.

On the walk to the mall, I saw a huge billboard that said in bright cheery letters that the local police department was hiring. All positions! It was perfect. I would never qualify for a job with the cops, and I could tell my mom I tried. Hopefully then she would leave me alone.

I spent the next few hours with my boyfriend loitering in the mall, until the security guards kicked us out. They loved to hassle the teenagers. After a few kisses, we made plans to meet up later in the week to play video games and mess around.

On the way home, I stopped in at the local Police station. I had been here several times before. Not for anything major, at least that they could make stick anyway. I nervously approached the front desk. The sergeant on duty gave me a nasty look, like I was disturbing him.

I asked for an application. The sergeant looked me up and down, and handed me a clipboard. He told me to sit down at the table in the next room and fill it out. I was to bring it back to him when I was done.

There were several other people filling out applications. Most of them looked much more professional than me, wearing suits and ties, while I was dressed in a stained t-shirt and shorts. Great I thought. No chance they would take me over these people. I found a table with an open seat and sat down.

I perused the application. It looked straight forward enough. All I had to do was answer a few questions, and sign my name at the bottom of the form. I was expecting something much more involved. Little did I know that I was given the "special form" for the people who would never make it to be an officer.

I ticked all the appropriate boxes, and signed my name. I gave the form a once over, and smiled. If this didn't make mom happy, nothing would. I got up and walked back to the desk.

I smiled at the sergeant, who grudgingly got up and took the form. He looked it over and smiled. I didn't like the way it looked. He motioned to two large men who I hadn't seen earlier. They came up behind me and grabbed my arms.

"Ahhh, perfect. We have just the spot for you." The sergeant said. I thought they were going to lock me up. I tried to get away, and screamed, "I changed my mind!" The sergeant laughed. "Sorry kid, you signed the form". He showed me the form again, this time with a magnifying glass. My mouth dropped open as I read the fine print that I didn't even know was there. It said that I agreed to take what ever job they offered me for a minimum of five years.

I went limp in the officer's hands. What was the worst they could do? Make me the janitor? The two men drug me towards a door on the side of the room. My heart dropped as I read K-9 unit. Great I'll be cleaning up after the dogs, I thought. If only I was so lucky.

Once we were through the doors, I was quickly and efficiently relieved of my clothing. I was still in shock as a collar and vest were fastened around my neck and body. I tried my best to cover myself, but it was no use. I was forcibly dragged through a curtain and thrown into a line. This is obviously where you came in, and my humiliation began.

I couldn't help but admire the other men I was in line with as I wondered what would happen next. In turn we were each led into a room with a number of what I can only refer to as stalls.

Once in a stall, we were given a through exam by a vet. He poked in prodded us in every conceivable place. Once he was satisfied we were healthy, he gave us a series of injections, presumably vaccinations and a microchip to identify us as police department property. A rabies tag, license, and nametag were affixed to our collars. Apparently I was now known as "Sparky". Oh well, could have been worse.

We were then led into a large classroom type area where we were instructed to sit. To my surprise, we each took a seated position just like any other dog. There must have been something else in those injections!

We were then instructed to watch a screen, where we were shown everything we would need to know to carry out our duty as police dogs. By the end of the presentation, I could that my mind had taken a back seat to a new set of instincts. I felt a strong compulsion to obey and serve my master.

After the class we were taken to the kennels where we would spend the better part of the next year to be assigned a handler. I was one of the last ones picked. My handler was a young officer, and I couldn't help but notice was very good looking. We bonded over the next few weeks as he took me through the rigorous training courses.

Once we had passed the training and proven we could work as a team we were assigned a patrol. I grew to like being a dog, and spending time with my master. Any thoughts of my previous life quickly faded from my mind to be replaced with thoughts of the job. I was eager to hit the streets.

We were assigned to low traffic areas for our first few patrols. I loved the work and took to it like a fish to water. My handler and I scored near the top for every task we performed, and were quickly turned loose on a street patrol.

I was surprised that most of the people we passed didn't even give me a second look. I'm sure I would have if someone as hot as my handler was walking a naked man down the street. People these days can be so oblivious to what goes on around them.

At the end of the first year, I was completely in the dogs head space. I had pretty much forgotten that I was ever human. I loved spending time with my handler wither it be for work or when he would play for me. It took me a while to get used to the dog food, but now it is my favorite meal.

One afternoon, I was brought into the Captains office. He was pleased with my performance, and wanted to know if I wanted to permanently renew my contract with the department. I, of course, barked yes! (Though I'm not sure it was fully of my own accord.)

I was pleasantly surprised when my handler came into my run in the kennel, and told me that because of our record I had been selected to undergo an experimental surgery to make me fully a dog. I was ecstatic.

The next morning I was taken into surgery. When I woke up I was given a look in the mirror. To my amazement, staring back at me was a German Shepard. I couldn't believe it. I started to wag my tail with joy.

After I had the chance to fully recover and get used to my new body, my handler and I were taken to a ceremony where we graduated from the training program. He became a Corporal, and I became a Sergeant. (I was told this was to make sure Dogs were treated well- cant mistreat a higher ranking officer now can you!)

As we walked across the stage, I looked out into the audience and saw that my mother was there beaming proudly. I had finally made something of myself. Could she have known this would happen? Did she plan it? Oh well, too late to worry about that now. Besides, I was happy this way. More so than I had been as a human. I loved my job and my handler.

My handler and I served the public faithfully for many years, winning many medals and awards before we retired. We were given a great retirement party and pension.

We lived together happily throughout our old age, as master and pet. We bonded in ways I never would have thought possible as a human. This wasn't quite the way I thought my life would turn out, but I don't think I would have done it any other way.
