TwoKinds: Master's Pet Part 1
#3 of TwoKinds Shorts
The boys were just taken in by Eric but Evals doesn't seem to care for Kathrin. To him she is just the "master's pet". But Kathrin is willing to show them that she just isn't the pet of the Vaughan family.

Tap...tap...tap...
Kathrin played with her ball outside of the large Vaughan home in the yard, taking a break from helping with some cleaning. Not long before the house was left to Eric, her master, he bought two slaves off his elder brother Roderick. One was a coastal fox named Michael and the other a canine called Evals. These two often stuck together as much as they could, having known each other since they were kids. The mixed breed female was different for them, not knowing her for very long but it did seem she got more special treatment than they had.
Passing her by in the yard, Mike carried a crate in his hands while Evals followed close suit before nudging his friend in the arm gently.
"Psst...Mike....Isn't that master Eric's pet?"
Mike turned around as he stopped in place, taking a look a the girl who turned her head to stare back in silence. He didn't want to talk about Kathrin with her sitting there in front of them. Too late now. The fox just kept walking and Evals continued to pester his friend with repeated marks of disgust.
"She must be master's pet. Too good to do any work around here and too good to earn her keep."
"Dude stop!" Mike shouted, making Kathrin jump and Evals going silent before scoffing.
"But....she doesn't have to wear a collar. Look...."
All Kathrin could do was stare but the hurt was evident on her face.
_Is that what I am? _
"That's not her fault okay? Just let's get this crate around back before we get yelled at again. I don't want to make master Eric mad..." Evals gave another glance to her and shook his head, following after Mike once more to the backyard. Kathrin got up from the grass and took her ball, sort of taking a moment to glance back at the boys before running off into the large house.
After getting in and putting her ball away, grabbing her duster in its place before going to find Eric. She knew he would know what to do. Going up the stairs and down the hall to the spare room, Kat found Eric working on a painting he had started a few days ago. She shut the door behind her and cleared her throat before speaking up in a timid voice, "Hey....Eric?"
"Yes Kathrin?"
"Am I....just a pet?"
"Excuse me a what?" He stopped and turned to look at her, noticing Kat's uneasiness starting to rise within her, wondering what was done this time. "Did someone say something mean to you?"
Kathrin didn't want to get the boys in trouble especially if they were just taken in, but she needed to be sure of something. "Am I just a pet? The new boys were talking and one of them looked at me like I was your pet."
The young man looked out the window and knew who exactly she was referring to, looking back to her with a smile to replace the anger in him. "No silly girl. You're more than just some slave or house pet. Kat you are one of the family and don't let those boys pick on you. Why don't you try making friends? Show them that it isn't so bad around here."
He pet her on the head and she would smile from ear to ear, nodding at his words until she felt a little better. Eric knew he would have to talk to them soon if he didn't want any trouble. After a few moments Kathrin left the room and went to think of some ways she could talk to them while finishing her cleaning.
A couple hours passed and she had a plan, looking around out in the slave barracks for Evals and Mike. Kat couldn't find either of them and the sun was starting to set, turning to go back into the house until she bumped into something that hit her nose first. It was Mike. She scrambled to the side and held onto her sore snoot, noticing that Evals wasn't with him.
"Hey look. I know you heard what we said but I wanted to apologize for Evals. He isn't the most trusting to anyone.....I'm sorry if he hurt you."
"No....no it's fine. I...."
"No it's not fine. He was rude and harsh. I kept trying to tell him that you're not like that. I'm Mike." He held out his hand for her to take, Kathrin nervously putting her hand in. She looked up where his left eye had a scar, quizzically staring but was interrupted by him once more," What's your name?"
"Kathrin Vaughan. I....I just wanted to see if.....if you wanted to be friends."
"Sure and that's a nice name Kat. Maybe we can get to know each other a little better. Who knows maybe Evals will lighten up." Mike laughed which was followed by her giggling a little before Evals actually walked up to them and made his way into the barracks. "Don't worry about him. He'll come around sometime.~"
