Adapting for Incompatible Systems
A young scientist works in a lab that is attempting to create suits that will augment the human body... but his curiosity leads him to find something amazing about the project he's working on. HIs workplace is a little less than thrilled with the discovery and attempts to bury the data, but can the researcher do so when terminating the project leads to the termination of a potential life?

In one of the megaskyscrapers that stood predominantly in the center of city only a few lights shined through the windows in the dead of the night. Most were cleaning crews, taking out the trash and cleaning up the place so that those that worked there would come in to fresh spaces in order to carry out their own work. In one such area higher up however the work going on was that of a much different sort. In the rather large lab area only a single human sat, his lab coat dangling over the floor as he stared at his computer screen while a singular light hung over his head.
The nametag on the badge that hung from the front pocket read Dr. Samuel Krilan, also stating that he was the lead researcher in nanotech development for the company whose space he was presently occupying. In the last several years there had been multiple breakthroughs in the field and the result was vast improvements in the quality of life for anthros and humans alike. Medical nanites could heal wounds and treat injuries with far more efficiency then going in with surgery, health nanites could monitor for any potential risks while in the body, and others still helped to subtly change the body in order to promote a healthier overall specimen. It was the last part that Samuel was currently engaged in; while human nanites were already far ahead in this area the additional complexities and large variances that came with anthro physiology made it hard for them to adapt to each species, which meant the company that could come up with a catch-all version would skyrocket to the top of the market.
It was the reason that the researcher was in the lab at nearly four in the morning, though up to a few hours ago he had a number of his team that were there with him. The bonus that the company was offering to whomever managed to crack the code first was generous enough it prompted him to stay, though he was beginning to wonder just how intelligent that was as his vision began to blur. It wouldn't be the first time since this project was concepted that he would sleep somewhere in the office and as he leaned back from the screen he saw that his own monitoring nanites were warning him that his body was growing increasingly tired and hungry. As he turned off the alarm he knew he could solve at least one of those problems while his program was running and got up from the chair that felt like had molded itself to his body for a cup of coffee and whatever might be in the fridge for public use.
Had Samuel been more awake he would have noticed that one of the test tubes full of anthro nanites he was working on was out of position in the machine that auto-tested them against the programs he was running. At the moment it was running various algorithms to try and crack the anthro code, the nanites able to pick up on the signal the computer was giving in order to continue their programming. That process was interrupted however as the arm of the machine reached out for the tube and attempted to grab it to draw the sample, only for it to knock the entire thing over and cause the entire system to lose connection and error out. The loud beeping got the attention of Samuel, who practically dropped his coffee and donut to rush over and contain the contents of the spilled test tube before they spilled out to the floor.
"No no no!" he shouted as he reached out and put the test tube upright again to save what was left, cutting his hand slightly on the broken glass and letting out a hiss of pain as he pulled his arm back to prevent even more contamination of the same. It was clear that the sample was lost however, the nanites initiating their shutdown sequence after being outside of a contained environment and the entire substance going from silver to black save for the few drops left in the glassware. "Three days of research... all gone..."
A stinging sensation in his hand and his watch going off alerted him to the fact that he was still bleeding, though it had grown far less as his own nanites went to activate his clotting and skin tissue growth response. Even though his wound would be healed in a matter of minutes he didn't want to drip blood everywhere and potentially contaminate everything else. As he made his way to the first aid kit he could hear his watch beeping frantically, likely telling him that he had been cut he thought to himself as he turned off the alarm. Had he actually looked at the face of the watch he would have seen that it was warning him that incompatible nanites had been detected in his blood stream and was throwing up a series of errors as they attempted to assimilate them...
For the newly-introduced nanobots they truly were a stroke of genius on the part of the one that had created them, but they were incomplete. Normally this would have caused them to just shut down, but that was before they encountered and connected to others that had been racing to clean and close the cut that had been relatively minor. With nothing else to go on the corrupted nanites used the code they cleaned from their similar brethren to patch enough together to finish themselves off. It quickly became apparent to the tiny robots that they were there to help this body... which according to their specs was not only wildly mutated out of parameters but also posing a massive health hazard to itself. The other thing that had been inadvertently turned off were the safety protocols that all nanites had in order for Samuel to work on them unimpeded, though now it was their turn to take advantage as they started to fulfill the needs of their hosts.
The human nanites in the bloodstream of the unknowing researcher would have normally taken care of what would amount to a foreign entity to their system, but the combination of the more advanced system and the recognition of the code that the new nanites had stolen from them tricked them into thinking they were being upgraded instead of invaded. The cobbled-together code was transferred from the alien nanites to the new ones, spreading like wildfire through the system that was linked together to protect the body that it was a part of. On the watch the screen flashed with multiple error reading messages but Samuel was too sleep-deprived and concerned with his current clean-up to even notice. The programming spread like a virus and the nanites beginning to convert organic components to do what it needed before it realized that much more was going to be needed to ensure the health of their host...
Meanwhile Samuel continued to curse to himself as he cleaned up the spill of anthro nanites, knowing that tomorrow he was going to be in for it once they heard of his lack of progress. Though the nanites were easy enough to replicate, the printer in the other room was able to generate trillions with the raw materials they had, the programming that had been sank into them was irreplaceable. The only thing he could do was make a fresh batch and start over again, at least knowing that he wouldn't have to start completely from scratch as he cleaned up the last of the spill and put it in the biohazard bag. After one more look of longing at all his lost progress he sighed and went to the materials vault to start the journey once more.
Samuel punched in his code and the heavy door opened, allowing him access to the secure area inside. Inside stood the nanite replication chamber which contained shelves upon shelves of test tubes sealed up with a mechanical arm jutting out of it. The entire process was automated, which meant that all he would have to do is load the program and make sure the raw material chambers were filled before he started. Since his work all was predicated on the wolf subclass of anthro he punched in those parameters and let the machine do the work.
"They manage to make trillions of microscopic machines and they still can't figure out how to automatically refill the vats," he said with a sigh as he opened each compartment one by one, looking inside to make sure they were still full. "Or maybe the company was just too cheap to get one with that feature. Wouldn't put it past a multi-trillion dollar company to do that..."
The researcher let out a groan as he opened the last one, which happened to be the largest, and saw that the hybrid metallic compound that formed the bodies of the little creatures was almost completely empty. Though he thought he could get away with printing one more run on what was left he didn't want to risk any further delays, especially since he was there because of his mistake in the first place. He went over to the raw materials locker and punched in the code to open it, then took out the large plastic drum and unsealed it. Inside was the silvery powder that made nanites happen, the alloy not only completely safe for organics but strong enough to keep the tiny machines stable while also harnessing natural electrical charges to keep going.
As he looked at the material however he had a very strange sensation... to touch it. Though he suspected that it would be like any other kind of metallic powder, but for some reason he couldn't help but wonder what it was like to run through his fingers. At first he decided to just ignore the thought, chalking it up to it being nearly five in the morning, the impulse only became stronger as he began to pour it into the printer and some of the dust blew back into his face. It was like he needed to touch it, as though his life depended on knowing what that relatively ordinary metallic material felt like on his bare skin.
His sleep-deprived brain decided to just give in and see what it was like, carefully taking a finger and putting it in the pile of silver dust that he had just poured into the machine. With the growing intensity of how badly he felt like he needed it he thought that he would get some catharsis out of it, but instead it just felt like normal dust as he pulled out the finger. Some of it seemed to stick to his skin but after giving it a few shakes it seemed to do the trick and stood back up from the loading bay. As he closed the door and grabbed the half-full jug to put back into the raw materials closet he suddenly was overwhelmed with a singular word that seemed to echo in his skull.
Without even thinking it through Samuel found himself prying off the lid and pushing his entire fist into the pile of glittering dust, watching his hand sink down into it before finally hitting the bottom. Instantly a wave of relief washed over him, like an itch that he had been trying not to scratch and then finally gave in. Once the euphoria of giving in passed however he realized that he was kneeling in the middle of their nanite printing station with his hands in a bunch of metal. He was glad that there was no cameras or other monitoring equipment, otherwise he would likely end up on the screen of one of their office parties. As he pulled his hand out however he saw something that concerned him far more than being embarrassed.
It looked like he had dipped his hand into a mirror, the metal completely forming around the digits in a silvery-chrome color. "That's... not possible..." Samuel said as he looked at his hand in a mixture of confusion and dread. "It takes thousands of degrees to melt this metal... I must be hallucinating, sleep-deprivation..."
He moved his hands up to his face and rubbed his eyes, but the second that he did that he realized he had made a terrible mistake. Almost instantly he felt the material spread from his hand to his face, more specifically his eye. Samuel practically fell back into the printer as he began to feel the metal not only coat over it, limiting his vision, but seeping into his skull! The shot of adrenaline he got from the fear that he may have metal leeching into his brain woke him up instantly, but just as he was about to run out to go for help he saw the reflection of himself in the equally shiny metal of the printer. He gasped in shock as the metal had completely covered his eye socket, which was why he couldn't see as there was only a smooth plate where it used to be, but had also started to spread towards his nose where it started to puff out.
Fearing some sort of allergic reaction or metal poisoning he remembered his watch and clicked it on to activate his emergency medical protocol, only to see the words UPGRADE IN PROGRESS flashing across it. Upgrade? Even if the system software was updating itself he would still be able to access all the features on it, the only thing that he was able to do at the moment was move through the menus which all flashed that there was a conversion in process. He was going to have to do this the old fashioned way, he thought to himself as he started to get up, thinking about where the nearest phone might be.
As he got to his feet however he saw that the hand that had been coated in metal had once more somehow gotten into the jug of powdered metal, and not only had the contents become completely liquidated but it had transferred itself up his arm to his elbow! When he tried to move it he found the stiff joints to be completely unresponsive, and when he did attempt to use his other hand to move the fingers not only did he find that he couldn't move them at all but he also had transferred some of the liquid metal onto his other hands. Worse yet he could see the veins in his exposed arms darkening, the metallic compound coursing through his veins and spreading through his body. If the rest of him went the way of his arm then soon his co-workers would come in to find a statue standing there...
Graphene and silicates, the idea flashed into his mind as he looked at the materials cabinet that was still open. The former was what the joints of the nanites were made of and provide near-frictionless joints while the silicates formed the crucial components that allowed nanites to be programmed. He needed both... and he needed them now as he practically crashed into the cabinet in order to get at them. Unlike the metal powder Samuel found himself unable to help himself and just dumped both jugs over his entire body. The result was an intense surge unlike anything that he had ever experienced before, especially around his groin as the material was liquidated by the nanites that needed them.
"Sensing impediment," a voice said in Samuel's mind that caused him to look around as the initial panic of the situation subsided. "Remove obstacle to resume assimilation of raw materials."
Impediment? Assimilation? Though the voice sounded a little like his own it was like it had been filtered through a computer, and as he looked down at himself he saw that the black carbon-based substance had caused cracks in the metal and seeped inside of it. As he looked at his arm in shock he realized that he could move it again, though when he did it he felt the insides of his arms moving strangely. There was another warning of an impediment that rang through his mind, this time far more insistent, and Samuel found himself taking his new fingers and putting them under his dusty shirt.
"What's happening to me..." Samuel said fearfully as he removed his shirt, seeing black and silver lines spiderwebbing through his flesh. "What is going on?!"
"Subject has been found to be defective," the voice in his mind once more said. "Beginning conversion process to optimize efficiency, adding new stimuli from template provided."
"Wait... my nanites?" Samuel said, looking back down at his watch only to find that it had been integrated into the metal that had covered his wrist. "That's impossible, even with my modifications there's no way that it could be doing this to me! Why are you doing this?!"
"We have detected sub-optimal performances in several systems," the nanites said in his mind. "Conversion of organic processes are yielding new means to improve host form and raw materials are allowing for mass replication to satisfy new requirements. Once upgrade is complete host will function at estimated three hundred and forty two percent efficiency."
Samuel couldn't wrap his head around what was happening to him, never in his life had he ever heard something like this before. As he found himself moving mechanically to take his pants off as well, his arms no longer even needing his prompting to do so, his mind raced to try and figure out what was happening. The nanites... he never did get to complete their programming, but instead of just shutting down somehow these were using his own nanites, and from the sound of it his own brain as the thought caused him to shudder, to complete their task. But what was the task they were even attempting to accomplish?
A perfectly healthy host in body and mind. The words rang out in his skull even as he felt the metal continue to spread across his skin like wildfire. As some of the silver goo began to leak out of his ears and nostrils it all started to make sense to him; he had set the nanites to maximum optimization just for the parameters of the programming, knowing that he would have to set them back down to more reasonable ranges once he was done. These nanites were being very much overachievers and as he could feel the nanites transforming his insides he had an idea of how they were going to make sure that he never had to worry about his faltering organic body...
...by replacing it entirely with something it believed to be better.
The changing let out a loud moan as another aspect of the nanites he hadn't expected began to crop up as well, his hands going up to his ears as they seemed to melt into his head from the metal covering him. Not only did it seal the transformative nanites in his brain, where they continued to assimilate it, but as he slid his fingers up the smooth surface he could feel two bumps growing on the sides of his skull. At first he thought they were horns but as they continued to grow he realized exactly what they were, a whimper escaping his lips as he grew a pair of lupine ears. It seemed to also trigger changes in his hands as he felt his fingers extending only to pull them back and see with his one good eye that he was growing claws.
Wolf, they were wolf nanites, and as Samuel turned to once more look at his reflection he suddenly found himself able to see out of his other eye just in time to notice that it was covered with a glowing amber lens. It made him look like he was a cyborg or something, but the nanites weren't going to leave him just with that as the metal and carbon and glass shifted in its liquid form over his mouth. For a second his remaining human eye went wide as his nostrils and mouth were completely sealed by the substance, only to find that when he couldn't draw in a breath he didn't feel the burning sensation of panic in his lungs. Once more the electronic voice in his head stated that lungs were very inefficient and that his insides had been replaced with high performance processors and state-of-the-art components to take the place of his woefully inept organic support systems.
The thought chilled him to the bone as he sat back against the printer, looking down at his naked body with a newfound sense of clarity. His feet had already gone the way of his arms, though instead of just growing claws he could feel the digits merging and puffing out to replace the incorrect anatomy with proper synthetic wolf paws. They even had carbon paw pads on the bottom of them as the shiny chrome metal formed into plates on his shins and calves while carbon joints replaced his knees. He thought that it hadn't reached his midsection yet, prompting the hope that he might have time, but he saw something glowing right in the middle of his deformed chest that he put a clawed hand against.
His metal digits sank through the useless flesh like tissue paper and revealed the hardened chassis of his body underneath, metal pectorals and abs surrounded by black carbon that kept his internal components safe. As the remaining organic components fell away he was relived to find one thing that was still on his body that he thought wouldn't be, though as he squeezed his dick a black rubber canine member pushed its way out and filled him with a sense of pleasure unlike anything he had ever felt before. It caused his entire synthetic body to quiver as his body became more anthropomorphic by the second, the muffled grunts coming out of his mouth becoming clearer as he wondered why the nanites would let him keep the blissful sensation as well as the cock between his legs.
"Analysis of area suggests that attachment be retained for optimal transmission of data," the voice in his head said, his one human eye closing as the metal crept towards the last vestiges of his organic humanity. "Ports have also been retained in head and aft section for this reason, with proper stimulation host will maintain heightened productivity and be rewarded for hard work to reinforce good behavior."
"You can't just... treat me like a dog!" Samuel growled, feeling his metallic tongue click against the roof of his new muzzle as sharpened teeth grew form it. "I'm human! I'm not some robot!"
"Error..." the voice in his mind replied, Samuel practically panting as he had to turn over from something pushing out just above his rear data por- tailhole. "Invalid designation, host must properly register itself or potential data conflict will occur. Optimizing mental capacity to stimulate host memory reserves."
With his physical transformation mostly complete, the sound of metal banging against metal ringing out as his new tail whipped against the printer, the nanites had turned to his mind. With their new upgrades they had essentially turned it into a computer, and even though Samuel was trying not to think of himself as a synth he could feel his operational capacity expanding. Memories he hadn't recalled in ages were suddenly at the tip of his fingers, equations and formulas he depended on a computer to do he could now solve in his mind, he even could see the programming in his own nanites as they optimized his systems. Without even realizing it he had started to stroke his new member as his other hand pressed against the control panel of the printer and metal cords jammed into the various ports.
The second he made connection a new wealth of data was opened up for him, Samuel's eyes widening and his brain freezing as his nanites downloaded the schematics to make more. Due to where his data output module was the technology was sent to the most reasonable place, his chrome balls filling out as he continued to stroke himself. The assimilation of data was like having sex, the more he knew the more his nanites could continue to modify themselves and, by extension, him. The chrome synth wolf found himself howling as he came from the stimulation, his paws almost kicking over the nearby shelves as his programming brought himself to orgasm.
The tidal wave of pleasure temporarily blacked out the creature known as Samuel, which allowed the nanites that were in his system to take over and make the necessary changes. For a few minutes the synth remained completely still, the silvery cum it had expelled reabsorbing into his system. Eventually it began to twitch and shudder for a second before the lenses of the creature began to glow with amber light again. As he slowly got to his feet his internal systems ran diagnostics, making sure that the merged processes of organic and nanite were able to run concurrent to one another.
Though the creature was still Samuel he realized that he wasn't... not in the sense of the word. His organic human body had been replaced, transformed into a superior machine brimming with nanites ready to absorb and compile data. No longer would he need to sleep, eat, or do anything that would hinder the progress of his work. He was a machine, and with that came a level of efficiency that no organic would ever be able to match...
The thought process caused a new idea to form in his mind, one that would ensure the superiority of this company as he gave himself a look over. Though in the throes of his conversion he had kicked the raw materials door shut he opened it once more, not bothering with the lock as he used his new strength to just wrench the door open. There would be no more need for printing nanites, the wolf synth thought, not while he was around. But first there was still one matter he wished to take care of first, some part of him still caring about aesthetics as he took the fiber optic nano-thread and began to absorb it into his system...
A few hours later the first of the morning crew got up to the office and made his way to his desk, the fox man pressing one hand against his face and another holding the huge cup of coffee he had ordered on the way there. With the deadline looming and the bosses breathing down their necks to get something they can put to market his days had been more brutal then most, the only one more dedicated then him possibly the night researcher that sometimes met him when he came in. The office appeared empty that day though, but after putting down his coffee and moving to take off his jacket he nearly jumped when he saw a figure standing next to him.
"Geez!" the fox said, taking a second to stop his heart from racing as his brain used the time to comprehend the chrome wolf man standing in front of him. "Whoa... is this one of those new worker droids that the company was buying?" He said to himself as his eyes scanned up and down the admittedly handsome creature, the chrome and silver plating framed by multi-hued lights that shifted in coloration up and down its body. "I thought that only the top floors were getting one of these... oh, and it's uh... anatomically correct too, that's neat I guess."
"Scanning," the voice replied, once more causing the vulpine to jump slightly as its mouth actually moved with the words. "Database connection established, Daniel Sanders, employee number four-seven-six-one-seven. Scanner indicates massive inefficiencies including malnutrition, sleep deprivation, inefficient mental processing, and seventy-two other deficiencies... recommendation is upgrade in order to provide maximum office efficiency."
"Hey now," Daniel said with a frown. "Just because I'm tired doesn't mean that you need to fire me or-" the fox was suddenly interrupted mid-sentence as the hands of the creature grabbed him by the head, his indignant nature quickly turning to surprise as he began to feel something pushing into his fuzzy ear. The fox shouted and started to push back, but as the black carbon tongue of the wolf synth pushed into his skull his face went from surprised to shocked, and finally to passive.
The wolf synth didn't take long to pump the fox's skull full of nanites, which instantly got to work assimilating the inefficient organic component to turn it into a far more efficient processor. It was only a small data packet, enough to ensure that the worker would be compliant during his upgrade as thick, mercurial liquid began to ooze out of the vulpine's other ear, nose, and slack-jawed mouth. When it was clear that the download had begun the synth moved on to the next phase of the upgrade, taking the fox's pants and pulling them down to expose his rear data port. Though it was just to give the fox his proper body the Samuel part of him could appreciate the firm rear of the fox, though soon it would be even better as he took his black rubber cock and began to slide it inside of him while feeling the intense pleasure of assimilation beginning...
...after seven hours the district manager of the company was riding up the elevator with a huge packet of papers. Somehow the floor he was about to visit had managed to crack the code on several high-profile projects that the company had been working on, the amount of finished project data pouring out was so intense that the others were having a hard time keeping up with it. Even as he had gotten to the lobby he had received notice that their workload capacity had increased once again, causing an exponential curve of output that warranted a personal visit to see what was going on.
It didn't take long for the district manager to find out what had changed, the papers he was holding scattering to the floor. Instead of the usual buzz of office work and various humans and anthros working on their computers there were dozens of robotic wolf men scattered about. Some of them had wires coming out of their bodies that were plugged into computers and other equipment while others were plunging their cocks into the tailholes and muzzles of one another. All of that stopped, however, when they heard them drop the papers and every amber eye turned towards their direction.
It appeared there was another incompatible system they had to adapt as they began to approach...
