Megalopolis - The Hunt That Went Wrong
#17 of Megalopolis
Not all of the Great White Hunter's plans go exactly as expected.
The Hunt That Went Wrong
By: Goliath Wildcat
The summer heat beats down on the bustling city of Megalopolis as rooftop air conditioners fight the oppressive heat to cool the inhabitants of the many towers and brownstones. A tall and voluptuous skunkette in her courtroom power suit steps out of her black sportscar with white racing stripes and settles her red tinted sunglasses on her nose. She looks towards the historic brownstone building in front of her and struts towards the door with her long blood red hair trailing in her wake. At the door with an old and tarnished plaque that reads 'Theodore Whitemane' she doesn't pause to announce herself or press the buzzer, but just lets herself into the old building with an equally old key.
Inside the tastefully decorated foyer she smiles as the old-fashioned music coming from a nearby room and the old record-player therein fills the quiet space that easily blocks out the noise and bustle of the city outside. Taking off her jacket she hangs it in the closet before she steps, hips swaying, into the spacious den and her eyes momentarily glow as she sees the white lion male sitting in an archaic armchair. Theodore sits before a fireplace that currently holds no fire, a glass of scotch held easily in one hand as he rests with closed eyes, ear flicking with the music.
She steps up, her heels quiet in the thick red carpeting that covers the floor, and leaning over, her heaving breasts straining at her blouse, to kiss the male on his cheek. Her sweet soprano voice lilting a, "Hello, my Hunter."
With a languid move he opens his eyes as he turns his head to face her and brings his empty hand up to pull her in for a deeper kiss and an exchange of tongues. Finally breaking their lip-lock they press their foreheads together and his deep voice carries over the soft music, "Hello, my Goddess."
Tiffany smiles and gives him a short kiss on his forehead as she stands and pours herself a glass of scotch from the decanters on the nearby cart, "Courts closed early when the air-conditioning failed. I may be a skunk, but even I didn't want to sit in the stench of sweating bodies any more than the judge did. Nothing more on my docket and they said it would be next week before they had the A/C fixed, so I decided to call it an early weekend and come home to my Hunter." She turns back to him and raises her glass with another smile before taking a small sip of the liquor.
The lion smiles and raises his glass in return, "As always, you are welcome in my sanctum."
She studies his face for a few moments before she asks, "What are you planning?"
He scoffs, "What makes you think I'm planning anything?"
She nods towards the windows shuttered against any eavesdropping and then towards the record-player, "You're in your den, where no one can snoop on you, and you're playing that old colonial music the Goddess says you were so fond of when planning a hunt." She giggles softly, "Besides, I could feel the heat in the air in front of you that holo-screen you use generates. You must have shut it off when you heard me come in."
He chuckles and takes another sip of his scotch, "And so the Hunter is so easily read by his prey." He taps a button on his armrest and a holographic projection of a young female squirrel in a lab-coat, obviously taken at some unknown government facility.
"She goes by the name Daniele, her last name was redacted from all the files I found. Former scientist at a secret military facility here in Megalopolis." He sets down his glass and taps a few more keys bringing up the limited information he could on her. Her past as vague as his own in the official databanks.
Tiffany frowns as she comes to stand next to him, her flowery perfume filling his nose as she plants her hip on the arm of his chair, "What makes her special? I see she is smart, but nothing special of note beyond that. I guess she's pretty, she'd make a good trophy, but I suspect a poor hunt."
Theodore changes the holo-screen to another picture, of a well televised henchwoman who had appeared in the city a few months back with a notorious villain going by the name Nightmare. Sitting back he crosses his arms, "Technophile, that is Daniele. It looks like the villain Nightmare broke her out of that facility which was keeping her nearly like a prisoner for some reason."
The skunkette takes another sip of her drink as her eyes scan the file on the screen, "Nanobot use to control high technology and advanced firearms." She smirks, "No use against your alchemical and steampunk technology my dear Hunter." Reading further she nods, "Weak to electro-magnetic fields. One of your tesla rounds would wipe her out I think."
"Yes," says the lion as he taps a few more spots in the air in front of him and a white vixen with red hair appears with a tight black leather and body mesh outfit. "But her fellow henchwomen might pose a bigger threat."
He takes his glass and sips again before continuing, "Sizequeen, dominatrix with an ability in some circumstances to alter her size. Limits and cause of size change are unknown at this time. Master of that neuro-whip she carries by all accounts though."
He taps the air again and there is a huge felinetaur lit by the muzzle flash of the gatling cannon strapped to her side, "This one is a larger problem I fear. High Caliber, origin unknown. Believed to have been a genetic creation of a criminal syndicate before her joining with Nightmare's crew. That cannon she carries fires an unknown form of stun-round. But suspicious is she can change it to a more lethal round if needed."
Bringing up the photos of all three ladies at the same time he adds the only good picture of the fiery Pegasus known to exist and frowns as he stands to pour himself another drink. Turning to examine the group he crosses his arms, "Quite the team to challenge on our own don't you think my dear?"
She nods and taps the screen to bring up Nightmare's file, "Pyro-kinetic with strong telepathic and empathic abilities." She shivers, "I hear he can pull your deepest fear from your heart and use it against you."
The lion nods, "Yes my dear, he can. I haven't experienced it yet, but I've seen the effects. The hardest mob hitmen reduced to crying heaps and heroes driven to do unheroic things with little more than a thought. Surprise might be our only chance if we have to face them all."
Tiffany turns to Theodore and frowns in concern, "I understand the thrill of a hunt, but why this one? What has brought her to your attention for you to even contemplate this. One or two are a fair fight, but these odds seem against even your well-honed skills. Even the Goddess may not be enough to help this time."
The lion looks down at his glass and swirls the drink, "Our young friend has asked for a favor, and I owe him more than a few as I have explained to you."
The skunkette snarls, "Chaos Cougar?! What has that daemon done that deserves you risking yourself on a hunt like this?" She points to the files still hovering in the air, "I've heard some things about this group. They are always together, and Nightmare is very protective of his henchwomen. If you're going to take down one, you'll have to take down them all."
Without looking up the lion takes a sip of his scotch and sighs, "He's done more for me then I can explain my dear, I've told you this before. I don't need to take them all down, only keep them busy tomorrow night. Apparently, Nightmare has his sights on some information that Chaos Cougar is adamant he cannot get his hands on. He is worried about the information being destroyed if he uses his usual technique when he faces off against this foe. I only need to slow him down, and she and the other henchwomen are the mighty Nightmare's weakness."
She huffs and turns back to the screen, "The Goddess doesn't trust him. There is something... Something not of this world about him. If she doesn't trust him, neither can I."
There is the brief brush of cloth that signals his approach before his arms wrap around her in a comforting embrace, "I know my dear, but I am not asking for him, but for me. Please assist me, not him, on this hunt my sweet lady, my Goddess, my Amazon."
She turns in his arms to look into his deep blue eyes, "You are the only one who has been able to catch and tame the Goddess, she can deny you nothing, nor can I." She leans in to kiss the lion with a passion that few have seen, let alone experienced.

Nightmare stands on the top of the tower with his fires dampened to help hide in the darkness of the city's night sky as he survey's their target. Next to him the slight form of Technophile tapping at a control panel only she can see in the air before her. "Master, the building's security has completed their patrol and appears to be taking their expected break on the far side of the building as expected."
Nightmare nods, "Are Sizequeen and High Caliber in place?"
She taps a few more controls in the air, "Yes, they are in the cargo elevator and I've overridden the video to repeat an image of an empty space."
"Good, any sign of our nemesis?"
She shakes her head, "No Master, no sign of the one who calls himself Chaos Cougar."
The Pegasus snorts and continues to survey the building across the street from where they stand. "I still want to know how that young upstart is able to intercept us and resist me." He feels a shiver run down his back at memory of their last clash, when he plunged for the cougar's hidden fear, and found nothing.
The small squirrel looks up at him, "Possibly some simple mind trick Master. Everyone fears something, even if they don't know it."
Nightmare shakes his head again, "I can't explain it to you who cannot feel such things my dear. He had no fear, nothing. Not even the most devout monk can claim such ability, for I have known many who claim such."
The black Pegasus jerks his view to the right and tries to focus, "What was that?!"
Technophile taps her VR screen, "Master?"
He takes the small binoculars from his eyes and points, "Down there, I saw a flash of black and white fur. It looked like a feral creature, but it was far too large. More like a citizen of the city trying to act like a feral."
Technophile runs her scan of cameras and frowns as she finds two of the cameras were obscured by tree branches swaying in front of them at the very moment Nightmare saw the motion, "There is something odd, but I can't say what. I don't see anything on the cameras now and in this heat, the thermo sensors are not accurate enough to trust anything."
Nightmare shakes his head, "I think I'm getting jumpy my pet. Things are going too smoothly." Pulling out his lighter be snaps it to life and lets the fire coat his wings, tail, and mane before he holds out a hand to her, "Come, let us start our night."
She takes his hand and lets him pull her into his embrace as he leaps off the tower to fly across and up to the neighboring rooftop.

The Great White Hunter smiles as he watches the Pegasus and squirrel take off for the rooftop where he now waits. Keeping his dark cloak over his outfit he moves to the elevator access door he had broken the lock on earlier in the day. 'Amazon should be in place, time to start the party.'
Walking over to the mechanism for the cargo elevator where Sizequeen and High Caliber are waiting he pulls the lever on the disconnect for the power to car and smiles as the pully wrenches to a halt. 'Let's even the odds some,' he thinks as he flips open an access hatch to the shaft and starts to slide quietly down the access ladder on the side of the shaft.
As he nears the car he comes to a stop and grins as he hears a feminine voice growling as she bangs on the controls for the elevator, 'Good, still in the trap.'
With careful steps to prevent the occupants hearing him he climbs on top of the car and taps a toggle on his bracer to adjust his Aether Goggles. He can see the outline of two figures in the elevator car, one a pacing figure obviously agitated and the other, much larger standing there with her arms crossed and her deeper voice trying to placate the higher pitched canine.
He is shocked as the large figure suddenly looks upward and shouts, her arm extending and tapping at the air, "Someone's there, I can smell them!" With a whir of electric a motor he hears the cannon on her side spin up to full speed and traverse to shoot upward. He leaps aside as a hail of small caliber rounds rip apart the top of the elevator car, a few passing through his cloak.
The roar of the cannon is short but devastating and he hears High Caliber growling to Sizequeen, "Check if I got him."
The vixen smirks looking at the perforated ceiling, "With that reaction, how could you miss anything." She looks back at the liontaur, "You know Master doesn't want you using live rounds on living targets. He'll be mad if you killed someone, especially an innocent elevator repairman." But with an athletic leap she reaches the hatch that was broken open in the brief burst of fire and starts to pull herself up into the elevator shaft. Her eyes take a moment to adjust in the darkness, and that is her downfall.
The only thing she hears is a puff of air before she snaps her hand to her neck as she feels a bee sting of pain. "What the..." she cries out as she feels her limbs lose their strength with a rapid speed and she falls back into the elevator car to sprawl on the floor.
"Bastard!!!" High Caliber screams as she looks down at the unconscious form on the floor of the elevator and the clear sign of a tranquilizer dark in her neck. "ROOAAAAARRRRR!!!" she screams as she once again opens fire, her cannon ripping more holes in the ceiling of the elevator car. Her blood hot with anger at watching her fellow sister in battle fall to a trick.
'Too predictable, as the psych profile said,' thinks the Great White Hunter as he tosses a small ball into the car that puffs into an aerosolized powder soon as it hits the solid floor.
High Caliber stops firing to cover her mouth and nose, but it is too late as the powder that settles on her fur is absorbed through her skin and she feels something odd. Her blood is still heating, but no longer with anger, now it is with lust. "Master!!!" she calls into her communicator, "Master, what's wrong with me?! I haven't felt this before Master! I... I need you!!!"
Nightmare answers over their communication link, his voice concerned at the tone of her voice, "High Caliber, what's wrong?"
The liontaur is ripping off her armor and weapon harness, her hands gripping her overly large breasts as she moans, "Ambush! I need you now!!! I need to breed!!!"
Nightmare's voice calls out, "High Caliber, you're not making any sense. Sizequeen, come in!"
The liontaur cries and whimpers as she writhes in a false heat induced by the alchemical formula coursing through her blood. A heat that is a hundred times stronger than anything she has ever faced before. Her forepaws are fighting each other to rub between her hindlegs while her hands grip her breasts in lust.
The vixen can only watch and listen as her eyes are still open despite the drugged dart. In her blood she can feel the same heat burning through her body, but she screams inside her head as she is unable to move so much as a finger to help herself or her companion. She clenches her eyes shut and feels the tears of need coursing down her cheeks at her inability to answer Nightmare. 'Please forgive me Master,' she begs inside her head as she fights her body that rebels against her.
"Sizequeen! Answer me damnit!"
There is nothing but the moans and cries of need from the massive liontaur to answer his calls.
Seeing the confusion he intended well and truly wrought upon this half of the team, the Great White Hunter smiles to himself. Turning away from the cries of lustful need he starts to climb quickly to slip onto another floor before the leader of this group comes to the rescue of his females. 'Two down,' he thinks to himself.
***
Nightmare frowns at his comm unit, "Technophile, what's wrong?"
She taps frantically at the screen only she can see, "I don't know Master, the power appears to have been manually cut to their elevator. The camera is offline." She flips to another camera as it indicates motion and she snarls, "There is an intruder climbing out of the service elevator shaft on the fifteenth floor."
Nightmare feels his anger flare, "Who is it? I want his hide if he harmed my pets!"
She frowns, "I don't know Master, he looks like he belongs on a colonial era safari. Male lion, white fur, I'd say he's about six feet tall and probably about two-fifty pounds."
Nightmare's flames reach his eyes, "The Great White Hunter, how dare he interfere..." he starts to stalk down the corridor, "Stay here and work on that door. We need to get into the vault to find those plans."
"Where are you going Master?" she asks as she looks frightened at his rage.
"I am going to turn a hunter into prey."

Amazon watches the large Pegasus covered in flames as he walks away and leaves the squirrel alone to continue her work. 'The Hunter did his work well,' the Goddess tells her with a sense of satisfaction as she waits for her chance. She nods with agreement as she watches the strange squirrel return to her work at hacking the technological locks on the vault.
The squirrel suddenly freezes as she mutters quietly, but not so quietly that Amazon cannot hear in the airduct where she hides. "If that's the Great White Hunter, where is his sidekick?" She snatches the SMG that hangs from shoulder sling and starts to slowly scan the area around her.
The skunkette smirks as she watches the reaction of the young squirrel, 'Foolish attempt to find us, we are not so simple to take down.' She looks at the small device the Hunter had given her and presses the red button as instructed and slowly counts to three before she slips the vent open enough to slip the device through.
Closing her eyes and covering her ears she waits still hears the high-pitched whine a split second before the device bursts into a crackling sphere of light and arcing electricity.
"Aie!" cries out the young squirrel before the nanites that make up her black and blue outfit start to shed off her like dust as the powerful short ranged EMP fries them. In seconds, the squirrel is standing there in only her fur before she collapses to her knees with a dazed look in her glassy eyes.
Amazon slips from the air duct with a coil of her Hunter's special rope and with the squirrel still in her post nanite stupor she works fast to tie her up. Looking down at the bound girl the skunkette smiles to herself as she nods at a suggestion from the Goddess.
Leaning over till they are nose to nose she sees the light of consciousness slowly return to the girl as she realizes she is helpless in the ropes that bind her limbs. The Goddess comes slightly forward from her observation in her chosen one's mind to speak in her voice that echoes from another plane of existence, "You shouldn't have pulled my Hunter into your petty feud with the strange cougar." She reaches under loincloth to cup her fingers against then curl them into her now wet and dripping vagina.
"Ooohh," she moans as she pulls her hand from her mound and holds up the glistening digits for the squirrel to see. "This is my gift, one girl to another," she says as she smears her nectar on the muzzle, nose, and cheeks of the bound and helpless squirrel.
A few breaths are all it takes before she starts to squirm as she feels a familiar fire alighting between her thighs. "Mmmmmf," she moans into the cloth that gags her as she squirms and the heat and need builds in her. Her mind knows that there is only one thing that can ease this internal itch, her Master.
Amazon starts to stand when she hears the sound of bare feet running in the hall and turns just in time to catch a black furred foot to her gut that slams her against the wall with a force that could break many a mortal's bones, but only knocks the wind from her and leaves her gasping for a moment.
"What do you think you're doing witch?!" Nightmare shouts as he kneels over Technophile as he tries to comfort her as she squirms, but his touch only seems to make the moans intensify.
"I'm sorry Daniele, I didn't think this was a trap to distract me," he cries to the young squirrel. Pulling a knife from his belt, he tries to cut the ropes that bind her, but to no effect. He grits his teeth as he looks to the skunkette, "What did you do to her?!"
Standing he approaches Amazon as she looks up at him, not with fear but with pleasure at the challenge of a real fight before her as she crouches, her clawed hands tearing into the carpet as she prepares to spring at this male who thinks he is a match for her.
Nightmare holds out his hand and shouts, "I know your fear!!! I am the NIGHTMARE!!!"
She feels his mind dig in for her fear and he does indeed find it, but the Goddess comes forward to help her servant as she screams in terror.
The ice blue eyes of the skunkette start to glow with the otherworldly power of the Goddess. "That was a foolish attempt mortal," her echoing voice says before she leaps at the Pegasus.
The large equine dodges her lunge with wide eyes, "I felt your fear, I can tell you are cowering." He squints at her, "You are not the one I am affecting, are you?"
"Heh heh heh," the Goddess chuckles. "I think he's learning. You only affected my avatar foolish mortal; your mind cannot fathom me or my abilities."
He smirks, "Another over-powered witch who thinks she can stand against me." He summons a ball of fire between his hands and fires it at her.
Amazon laughs as she dodges the fire and lunges for him again. Once again, the large equine dodges her and smirks, "I see you like to dance. Are you sure you're not a ballerina?"
The skunkette hisses as she swipes at him with her claws which Nightmare dodges with practiced ease. With a flap of his wings he sends a wave of flames at her that she leaps out of the way of and avoids the scorching that the wall suffers.
Nightmare smirks as he sees the figure of the lion in his archaic garb at the end of the hall behind the skunkette fighting him. He can see the rifle being leveled at him and smirks with a thought, 'Too easy.'
"Your friend didn't warn you what I do to guns did he?" he smirks as he spins, his flaming wings shieling him before he erupts out of it and launches a stream of fire towards the Great White Hunter.
"NO!!" screams Amazon as she sees the target of the attack but is powerless to stop it.
The Great White Hunter sees the attack, but too slow to react as it enters the barrel of his rifle. While there is no gunpowder to erupt, the intense heat has another effect on the compressed air cartridge that erupts in the stock of the rifle. Splinters of wood and metal explode and pepper the lion's arm, cheek, and neck cutting several blood vessels and painting his right side red with his own blood.
Running past the equine Amazon catches the lion as he slumps to the floor with a hand to the side of his face as blood runs between his fingers in a steady flow. Amazon starts pouring her power into him to staunch the bleeding as she glares at the large black Pegasus with a look she wishes could kill.
Nightmare chuckles, "Seems I might have found your fear after all witch. You fear losing this pitiful kitten who thinks he's a hunter of metas." He snorts, "You should never have come after me and mine. Didn't your mother ever teach you to never hunt your nightmares?"
"Grrrrowl," Amazon growls in feral rage at seeing her beloved Hunter injured in such a manner as her tail twitches. "Know now he who thinks he is a Nightmare of others. You have earned your own nightmare this night." Her voice is menacing with its other worldly echo.
Nightmare scowls at the pair before dismissing them with a wave of his hand, "Leave witch, I will not harm you or your kitten further this night. Death is not my goal and since my pets live, I will let yours do so as well. I have my own mates to look to." He turns away from her to pick up Technophile in his arms and cradle her to his wide chest.
Before he walks away, he glares at the skunkette and her white lion with fire in his eyes, "Pray we don't meet again girl. You two have made an enemy who will not forgive you this night."
Amazon growls again before she snaps in response, "And you have angered the Goddess who hunts all." She looks down at her unconscious Hunter and lets the tears she had held back flow, "I told you this was a mistake."
She startles as there is a flickering of lights around the pair of them and in a flash, she finds them on the cold floor of a small metal room. She snaps her head towards the door that opens to the view of Chaos Cougar, his visage blank behind the visor of his helmet. With a snarl she lashes a clawed hand towards him which he catches in a practiced armlock, "I don't want to harm you Amazon, I want to help the Theodore."
She tries to free her arm but finds the cougar's grip too strong to break without letting go of her Hunter. "This is your fault," she hisses. "He's injured because of you!" she screams at him.
Chaos Cougar nods, "I know, and I want to help him."
"If you wanted to help him, where were you when he was fighting your enemy?!" she snaps as she holds her lion in a protective embrace. "You are a daemon, you unnatural creature!"
He sighs and shakes his head, "I wanted to be there, by your side. But Theodore said I would be in the way. I am not familiar with your hunts he claimed and would be a liability." Bowing his head he lifts his hands to his helmet for a moment before he lifts it from his head and looks into her eyes with golden irises that show no fear even though he knows he is talking to a Goddess of power older than time.
He extends his hand to her to help her with the lion, "Let me help him Amazon, I have the latest military tech that can put a mortally wounded soldier back into battle in an hour."
She clutches her Hunter to her, still pumping her nature magic to the wounds, but she can tell the healing is slow. "How do you know it can help him?"
Chaos Cougar sighs, "He didn't tell you?" At a quick shake of her head he explains, "Because I've had to help him before of special occasions."
The skunkette is shocked for a moment and lets the cougar take some of the lion's weight and together they pull him from the teleportation chamber and over to a bed that slips from the wall where they lie him down.
While Amazon removes the Aether Goggles and pith helmet, Chaos Cougar rips open the lion's shirt and attaches a pair of small metal disks to his chest and a screen comes to life with the lion's vitals. Chaos Cougar looks up and nods before he steps back and start tapping commands into his wrist unit, "Theory, engage auto-surgeon. Full regeneration package."
"Yes, Colonel Catamount," comes the soft feminine voice of the ship's AI as several arms unfold from the wall over the bed and start to sweep over the lion's face and start to treat the myriad of injuries there. "Recommend an injection to relieve the pain and ensure the patient remains asleep through the procedure."
Chaos Cougar takes a hypo-injector from its compartment and holds it up, "Tranquilizer, painkillers, and a couple other things, to help him relax while the systems do their job." At the skunkette's nod he presses it to the lion's neck and depresses the button. There is a hiss and the lion's breathing eases as his heartbeat evens out as the numbing medicine speeds through his system.
Nodding to the screen he confirms, "That's better."
He steps back to lean on the bulkhead and crosses his arms over his chest as the mechanical arms work to remove the shrapnel while lasers cauterize and stop the bleeding. "We just have to wait; he'll be good as new before you know it."
The skunkette squats beside the bed and watches her Hunter as the machine works on him. She is awed by the technology that closes his wounds and leave no sign of the terrible damage. She reaches to stroke his thick white mane but pulls her hand back, not wanting to interfere with the strange technology.
"It's fine," says the cougar where he observes. "It won't interfere with the operation." He looks at his bracer and nods, "It's nearly done in fact. Theory is applying the last layer of regeneration to help his fur grow back.
Amazon turns to look at him, the Goddess' power still glowing from her eyes before she turns back to her Hunter and strokes his mane. She starts to cry silent tears and whispers, "I'm so sorry my Hunter."
The lion starts to stir soon as the arms fold back into the wall and turning his head towards her he opens his eyes as if from a sleep, "My Goddess?"
She surges to pull him into her arms and lets the silent tears turn into a full bawling cry as she hears his voice again. He returns her embrace as he looks around himself and notices the young cougar leaning against the wall who gives him a nod.
"Did we succeed?" he asks.
Chaos Cougar nods again, "You were able to delay him and we'll get the plans moved to a more secure location tomorrow as scheduled. Nightmare is not one to easily give up I fear."
The lion nods as he sits up and pulls the skunkette into his lap, "I'm sorry now I didn't allow you to join the hunt." He raises a hand to his face and is delighted to find unblemished fur and skin, "Looks like I owe you again my friend."
Chaos Cougar shakes head his, "This one is on the house. I owe you for this one I think."
The skunkette whimpers as she nuzzles Theodore's neck and the lion understands, "The Goddess is in control of the lass here. Could you give us a trip home so I can free her from the Goddess' aspect in familiar atmosphere?"
The cougar grins and taps a few keys on his bracer and waves towards the chamber the lion and skunkette had appeared in. "I think I owe you far more than a free trip home."
Gathering his equipment he carries the skunkette as she wraps her long and fluffy tail around him. As the chamber closes there is a flash of light and the Hunter is pleased to find themselves in his bedchambers.
Leaning his head down he kisses the skunkette's forehead, "Come my dear, let's free your avatar from her burden for a time."
