After Dark: a side story, Part Three
#3 of After Dark world
{if your underage, GO AWAY!! or at least don't tell me, if your over that and enjoy females falling in love, have at it!}
Hours later, Cathrine found herself waking slowly. She was warm, very warm, and she felt a thick weight over her hip. She sleepily opened her eyes a bit, blinking into the low dim that filled the blocked off bed area. She shifted, and that thick weight over her hip tugged softly. Cathrine blinked and jerked a bit, turning her head. She was greeted with the sight of a peacefully slumbering bear, and she sighed, relaxing into the deep plush of the bed, trying to wiggle her way onto her back, trying not to fight the robe she was now utterly trapped within. Cathrine lay there on her back, studying Rachel's features. That low bridged forehead led into a long snout, black nose right now twitching as the bear slumbered away.
Cathrine watched Rachel sleep, wanting to examine the bears features with her fingertips, but she didn't wish to disturb the sleeping female. "What in the world am I doing... I just met this woman and I slept with her... naked at that!... let her get closer then anyone else has besides Vanessa.... She kinda reminds me of Vanessa though..." Her thoughts trailed off as the slumbering bear stirred, and Cathrine eeped before she could stop herself, scooting to the side as much as she could while Rachel rolled onto her back, gave a huge sigh then settled again. Cathrine watched her a bit to make sure she was still sleeping, before the smaller female carefully rolled over bit by bit, till she was facing the larger ursine. She huffed at the robe that was tangled around her , but still wasn't really willing to struggle with it.
"Don't want to risk waking her... damn though is she beautiful, what twist of fate got me paired with her? Goddess I don't know what to think of all this..." Cathrine sighed again, looking at the bears left arm which was currently tucked half under the pillow, frowning at the gauze there, stifling a whimper, "Why did I react that way? I've never had a problem with alarms like that before... Why did I bite her? We just met but I don't have a reason not to trust her... " though that brought a deep blush to her cheeks remembering what Rachel has said about trust last night. "Goddess it felt good to be held by her... even felt good when she was over me like that...."
Cathrine sighed softly, and snuggled into Rachel's side, closing her eyes and trying to relax as best she could. As she felt sleepiness take her again and she started to fade away, she felt a large arm lift from under the pillow and wrap around her shoulders, timed with a distant murmur of, "That's my good girl" Cathrine felt herself flush, but unconsciousness took her again.
Rachel smiled as she watched the smaller hybrid falling asleep again, the bear had woken up at the snuggling of the younger female, and couldn't resist wrapping her arm around the white kitty-girl, pulling her even closer. Rachel had no qualms about touching the slumbering girl, though did so gently, just rubbing Cathrine's robe covered back and shoulder until she was sure the girl was out cold again.
Rachel sighed, reaching up to one of the built in computer screens and hit a few buttons, keeping a wary eye on her companion. The bed's servos below the mattress kicked in a moment later, slowly lifting the top half of the mattress till she and Cathrine were sitting up at a slight incline. Cathrine stirred in her sleep, and Rachel held her breath a moment, but the girl simply slid down the incline a little bit and curled up, resting her head in the older woman's lap. Rachel grinned and ever so gently ran a paw over one ear that twitched in response, then reached over to swivel her computer pad out. She tapped the screen a few times, bringing up a news feed, then paused and looked down at her sleeping bed partner. Rachel chewed her lower lip undecided, but then tapped a few more keys before typing a few keywords in one-handed, leaving the other on the sleeping girl's shoulder.
What came up surprised Rachel, angered and disgusted her. The simple keywords she'd put in had brought her ten or more articles or vidfeeds on Cathrine's attack four years ago. The headlines of "Local Gang Rapes Mosaic", "Blended Girl Hospitalized After Attack", "Band Members Rescue Mosaic Classmate" and more filled her screen rapidly. Rachel swallowed hard and looked down at her peacefully sleeping roommate, before taking a deep breath and tapping one of the articles, not wanting to risk waking Cathrine with a video. As Rachel started to read, she found it harder and harder to resist growling, though she found herself protectively hugging Cathrine to her, and she forced herself to relax. The first article she read blatantly described the attack and Cathrine's wounds, making it sound like the hybrid had been at death's door and coated red with blood when she was rescued. Rachel huffed, then flipped over to another article, which described the men involved.
This time she really did let out a short growl, though froze in place when she heard Cathrine whimper and shift. The smaller female was out for the count though, and Rachel resumed reading after Cathrine didn't make any more movements. The words on the screen filled Rachel with a sense of overwhelming anger, but she couldn't help but to read them. 'That ain't no girl, only a beast, I did nothing wrong' the article quoted one of the men involved, another saying 'Beasts like that should be in cages. Beast should be happy we touched it at all' Rachel stifled another growl by biting her lower lip firmly, looking down at Cathrine again. She wondered how much of this the girl had known, although considering her reluctance to talk about it, Rachel had the nasty feeling that the kitten knew. The ursine closed that article out and opened yet another article, this one thankfully not quoting any of the gang involved. Instead this one had quotes from the students involved in the (as the article said) 'heroic rescue of their friend and classmate', most of which actually made Rachel smile a little.
'I'd thought we'd lost her, there was so much blood' one quote read, from a kid named Josh, 'I was so happy when she opened her eyes and smiled at us, she fainted again but somehow I knew then she'd be okay.' Another of her fellow band mates was unnamed, but quoted, 'I'd like to rip those guys that did this to our Cat a new one, I want them in jail a long time, if not a lifetime. Wish I could have gotten a good belt on those bastards, but getting Cat out safe was more important.' Rachel leaned back, her eyes drifting back to part of that last quote, 'our Cat' she smiled softly and then looked down as she cleared the screen, squeezing the sleeping girl's shoulder ever so softly, "Mine now."
Rachel leaned her head back further as she rubbed Cathrine's shoulder, looking up to the ceiling briefly, thinking. She sighed, knowing she'd have to be careful not to reveal to Cathrine just yet that she'd looked for more information. Considering the attraction she knew was between them, she'd felt she needed to know. Rachel vaguely wondered if Cathrine had gotten any therapy afterwards, but considered her personality when she wasn't flustered, guessed she had. Rachel looked down again, and ran a finger down the girl's rather tangled hair, smiling a bit when the smaller girl shifted with a very puppy like whimper, "So darn cute" Rachel checked the time and blinked at it, then laughed a bit, they'd slept longer then she thought, and it was already middle of the afternoon. She slowly pulled away from the sleeping hybrid, pausing though when Cathrine whimpered in her sleep and tried to cling to Rachel's leg.
The ursine giggled softly and rubbed on Cathrine's shoulder till she went limp again, then slowly managed to extract herself from that sleepy grip, replacing her leg with a fat pillow. She pulled the privacy partition aside after hitting the commands for the bed, quickly slipping out and closing it most of the way again, not wanting to wake up Cathrine with the lights, but not wanting her to feel trapped either. She sighed softly and stretched, looking around the room before ambling over to the mini fridge that was at the end of her bed, opening it and peering inside. She huffed a bit at the lack of selection before pulling out a bottled lemon-aid, mumbling to herself, "Time for the classics, will have to run to the store" Rachel stood and stretched out, looking into the bed again and watching the ball that was sleeping robe tangled kitten.
She stood there for a while, probably longer then she meant to, simply watching Cathrine sleep. She couldn't believe what had happened to the girl, and that this kitten still seemed so innocent after that, "Especially when sleeping, Goddess, she's beautiful." Rachel grinned though, remembering the girl's reactions earlier, oh she was even more beautiful when she shivered and squirmed like that. The bear moved over to her desk, pulling out and plopping into the large chair with a sigh. She glanced over to Cathrine's chair next to her, chuckled softly, then grinned a bit. Rachel booted up her computer up, already flipping to a site she knew of that boasted 'child' booster seats, then paused frowning. 'Might be too fast for that...' she pouted a bit, but sighed a resigned sigh, knowing she'd have to move slowly.
"Least until we get over the trust thing, Still, can look at least" Rachel grinned and flipped though the rather colorful selection, wondering idly what the girl's favorite color was. She'd been watching the smaller female unpack, but Cathrine had been rather successfully private about most of her things. Clothing wise, Cathrine seemed to prefer darker colors, but that had been a small selection over all. She grunted, clearing that option out and flipping to another one, simply loading up some of her favorite sites to pass the time till the sleeping girl woke.
Rachel was startled by the knock on the door, quickly spinning and closing the privacy partition the rest of the way, holding her breath that she was fast enough the slumbering girl inside hadn't been disturbed. She spun back to one of the controls, tapping once to bring up the viewer from the hall. Rachel relaxed a little when she saw Rebbecca and Serenity, and grunted to them, "Coulda called" before hitting the door release and turning around.
Rebbecca chuckled as she pushed open the door, "Come on Rachel, you know me, when do I call?" the squirrel gave a buck-toothed grin and then blinked, looking from Cathrine's open, empty bed, to Rachel, then to the closed one right next to the bear, "Cathrine still sleeping? um.. in your bed?"
Rachel leaned back and laughed softly, looking towards the barrier before nodding, "She needed the comfort after this morning. What can I say, the girl's a master of the puppy pout" Rachel grinned a bit, then waved them both in, "So, to what do I owe this honor?"
Serenity took the edge of Cathrine's bed, and Rebbecca stole the hybrid's chair, settling in before replying, "Wanted to see how you two where doing, yanno with the whole biting accident... how's your arm?" Rachel snorted softly and gestured to Serenity, who took up that reply, "Clean wounds, deep, but clean.... those emergency workers didn't do a good patch job though, replaced the wrappings earlier." Rebbecca nodded to Serenity, then sighed, and she turned to Rachel, "This gonna be an issue? we can get folks moved around if there's going to be a problem"
Rachel chuckled softly and waved her hand, shaking her head, "Naw, she feels bad enough she bit me, we don't need to make her feel worse by moving her out. It was just an accident after all, not like she meant it or anything..." Rachel grinned impishly, wiggling the fingers of her left hand, "Think if she meant that bite it'd have been a lot worse, kitten's got a grip in those jaws."
Serenity spoke up, "I noticed that, rather wolf like bite. Rachel's right I think." Rebbecca leaned back and watched Rachel a moment before nodding with a small huffing. "All right, I'll let you make the call since this was your room first. The safety of my girls worries me more then upsetting one of them, but if you think it'll be okay then that's that" The squirrel sighed and rubbed her eyes softly, "Let's just keep this between us as best we can, don't need it getting out, the media's already trying to snap up every little bit they can."
Rachel had a flashback to the articles she'd found earlier, and quickly agreed, "Definitely don't need the media getting this, they'll make it seem twenty times worse then it is... Long shirts for me for a few days. I'm fine with that." Serenity and Rebbecca both laughed, then Serenity waved her hand to the closed off bed, "How's she doing?"
Rachel grunted softly, looking at the partition a moment before sighing and leaning back again, "Well like I said, she feels bad for biting me, kept apologizing over and over... She'll be fine with a bit of rest and some food after she's woken up" Rachel paused a moment before looking to Rebbecca, "Might be worth it to look into the alarm pitch though.... Maybe prevent this from happening again, Goddess forbid that we need to worry about it."
Rebbecca sighed and nodded, "Already told the bosses, just said that someone was complaining about aching ears from the alarms, so we'll see what comes from that" She sighed and rubbed her forehead, standing up, "If you two will excuse me, I better go check on the arrangements that have been made for the misplaced folk."
Serenity waited until Rebbecca was gone before turning to Rachel, lowering her voice habitually as she glanced towards the closed barrier, "Really... how is she? I remember the look on her face this morning." Rachel sighed and nodded, leaning on her elbow lightly, "She feels terrible Ser, she'd have pulled away from me afterward if I hadn't gotten her tangled up.. Didn't like pushing it on her but I knew she needed the comfort, even if she didn't" Rachel sighed and rubbed her temples softly, "Really not sure what to do with her right now, she seems..." Rachel trailed off, and Serenity supplied softly, "fragile."
Rachel looked up and chuckled softly, "Yeah.. Still hot as hell though." Serenity gave a toothy grin of triumph, "I knew it! You've got the hots for her don't ya, I just knew it when I saw how you looked at her, you want her." Rachel threw her head back and laughed, leaning back and grinning at her friend, "You think so hm? By the Goddess Ser, can you blame me? Don't think I've ever met a girl quite like her, plus she's sexy to boot." Serenity laughed softly and stood, squeezing Rachel's shoulder before heading for the door, "I'll be back in the morning to check on your arm."
A moment later, when Serenity's hand was on the door handle, Rachel spoke up again while she stared at the closed barrier, "Ser? Do you believe in love at first sight?" The cheetah paused and looked back, studying Rachel's features for a moment before grinning, "I do now."
