Invisible. Chapter 1
#1 of Invisible
All my life, I have always disappeared into the background either by choice or by necessity. I always tell myself that I prefer to be alone anyway to lessen the pain, to lessen the loneliness and the dread that creeps on me every day. In a world where superheroes roam around everyday, fighting monsters, devils and other superpower individuals, disappearing isn't that hard.
Even then, to disappear completely without any trace will be noticed for any normal person...but I'm not normal, I also have super powers, the power to disappear, to erase all my presence, all trace of myself from this world. My name is Daniel Jehovah, a snow fox . I was left at an orphanage when I was a baby but that didn't work out too well so I left. I left on my 10th birthday when I discovered my power, since then I have been hiding myself from everyone, stealing clothes and foods. It has been thirteen years.
My power not only erases my presence but it also erases whatever I want, it's not stealing if no one knows it even exists right ? For the next thirteen years I roam the street, occasionally some hero manages to notice me but I quickly evade them. Superheroes have much more keen senses than normal beasts if they train them hard enough.
I have seen a lot of people in need of help and I tried to help them as well... but one time, I managed to make an entire truck disappear entirely without a trace in front of a whole crowd, normally I can only make them disappear by erasing the presence along with the memory...but this is different.
I didn't try to explore that power anymore and now...all I do is live, try to enjoy the things in life. Roaming from town to city, city to city and then to other countries. No one has caught me and it will stay that as long as I don't reveal myself to anyone, I don't need anyone else but myself...it's ok to be lonely.
Even if it's for the rest of my life.
"GAH! This boss is too fucking hard...how the hell are you suppose to beat this bastard without cheating ?"
Frustrated, I place the controller back down, I don't leave any evidence that I was here. I don't like using my ability when I'm alone and right now I am completely alone. Crap...I should probably get some food, tummy starting to act up.
I exit the house, locking the door by using the key hidden under a small brick. I have been visiting a lot of houses in this area, a lot of them are homes of small families. Some happy, some different but overall happy, this neighborhood is a good one. I shouldn't take advantage of them.
Currently, I'm staying in Kyoto. The food is great, the area is a bit dense so I tend to bump into people a lot. I have been trying to learn Japanese for a few months now but learning a language without speaking to anyone is a bit tough. Even then, by observing what people do in their everyday life, I manage to pick up some of the lines.
It is currently 3 PM and I'm walking through the commercial district of the city. Hmm...food, I could go for some takoyaki right now and there's a vendor nearby. I just have to wait for someone to order and I'll just take it from them. It sounds bad when I put it like that but they won't remember a thing about it and they'll just end up buying another one after that.
Ah! A target, a highschooler. I walk up to the Tanuki, quickly snatch the freshly made Takoyaki out of his hands before snapping my finger. He was confused at first then he quickly ran back to the vendor and bought another batch. This should give me enough energy for a while, power takes so much energy to keep up so it's nice to be able to not use it once and a while.
Walking through the city's streets, watching the residents of the city go about their day either to work or to school, it's so relaxing... sometimes I do wish I could experience these things though. I'm better off being alone anyway, I don't hurt anyone this way.
"Hmm...maybe I should have a bath. A hotel should do the trick, I heard Japanese hotels have super Fancy bathrooms!"
Who am I even talking to...no one can hear as long as I keep my power up, though a one sided conservation is better than no conversation at all. Just have to keep up for awhile, maybe I'll head to Akihabara next ! The Otaku city of Japan! I'll leave Kyoto next week, I still want to see some of the shrines here.
After a nice long bath in a hotel and a handful of hotel snacks along the way because I need the energy, I travel toward one of the many Shinto shrines in Kyoto. I think this one is called Fushimi Inari, it is said to be the most famous and according to the guide I'm holding, it's a 3 hour hike.
Climbing the stairs to the shrine, there seems to be an almost endless amount of Torii gate, from time to time, there are smaller shrines on the way. They're pretty for sure but I don't pay too much attention. Around 45 minutes in, I notice the amount of Tori is starting to decrease, I'm half way there I suppose. The guide must have also included the time it takes to visit all the smaller shrines.
Eventually I reached one particular shrine that caught my interest. The shrine has two small fox sculptures in front of it. There's an offering of aburaage underneath it. The strange thing is the fox seems so life-like, like they're watching me from where they are situated. Maybe...I should make an offering, though I don't have much to give to them. I guess I'll just put whatever in my pocket
Four onigiri, which isn't a lot but it's better than nothing. Setting the food down and clapping my hand together, I offer the four rice balls to whoever this shrine was made for, wishing for good luck. After paying my respects, I start descending the mountain.
The whole experience is fun for the most part, all of the Tori gates make me wonder how they built all of them, how long did it take... they're built beautifully and through the test of time, they still stand tall to this day. I should think where to sleep tonight, it's getting late.
Walking back to the residential area of the city, a siren rings out loudly and a robotic voice, speaking in full Japanese, announces something. Of course I couldn't understand any of it but looking at every one scattering and running away...it must be serious. Almost pure chaos, where are they going though...
At that moment a loud explosion erupts about a kilometer away from me, catching my attention fully and I start running to see what's going on.
"This isn't an earthquake or a Tsunami for sure... a Monster attack ? No... There's an anti monster projector covering the whole city. So... someone is causing this and hurting people."
I arrive at the scene seeing a fierce battle between two beasts, one is a large wolf who I recognise as Speed Wolf, a well known superhero in Japan, known for his speedy rescue and defeat due to his power manipulating his momentum. The one he is fighting is a terrifying uncanny looking Shadow, a Demon? Shadow doesn't really attack dense suburban areas like this though, at least not alone. Speed is putting up a good fight against it but he's definitely struggling, whatever this Shadow is...it is unnaturally strong.
I watch the battle between hero and demon, the air around me is hot, dry as a bead of sweat slowly falls from my forehead. Speed Wolf manages to get a few good hits into the Shadow but it doesn't take a genius to see it wasn't very effective, at this rate Speed Wolf will be defeated... The shadow movement gets faster and faster, almost as fast as Speed but it also has the strength to back that speed up.
They haven't noticed me, they won't notice if I keep using my own power. I should leave... I shouldn't get involved, it's too dangerous...I'm too dangerous. The shadow manages to stun Speed Wolf for a brief moment, grabbing a large boulder and throwing it at him. I snap my finger, pointing my hand at the boulder and it disappears completely. A pit in my stomach starts to form as I feel the energy inside of me dissipate. The shadow looks confused for a moment but Speed Wolf knocks it down before back off. The Shadow is still standing strong but its attention isn't focusing on Speed Wolf anymore, it's looking for me...
Its head turns to my direction, how does it even know I'm here? I still have enough energy to keep the veil on myself. I blink and it's gone, I turn frantically to run. Why did I break my own rules!? Do not get involved with a super hero ordeal!
I don't get very far though as it appears in front of my neck, holding me up as if I'm a rag doll.
"wHAt ArE yoU?!"
Its voice rings out, dark and terrifying. I couldn't think straight as it started strangling me. Slowly I feel my unconsciousness start to slip but it squeezes harder, almost crushing my neck. I don't want to die, I don't want to disappear anymore, I want to be able to talk to someone, I want to live.
"AARRR HG!"
The loud scream snaps me back to reality, I'm on the ground, my body is stiff, almost frozen. All I can do is turn my neck to look at my surroundings. It screams in pain as the shadow's form starts to disappear. It began to make its way to me again but its leg was gone along with its arm. I stare at it, seeing the result of my power and remembering the presence of a Speed wolf nearby. I tried to put on another veil but a pain in both my stomach and head put a stop to it. I ran out of energy...
Where's Speed Wolf ? Come on, come on put a veil before he finds me! I cough loudly and see blood coming out of my mouth. Before I can try again, I feel myself being lifted off the ground and now I'm being carried by the hero at the crime scene. He looks beat up but otherwise fine, he's speaking in Japanese so I can't make out what he is saying. I can't move any part of my body...it's just like when I made the truck disappear. I can't stay conscious for any longer as all of the energy in my body is gone. As I fall unconscious, Speed Wolf is clearly in distress, trying to figure who or what I did to the Shadow.
I'm climbing the mountain to Fushimi Inari shrine again, everything seems so peaceful as I climb the stairs. Cherry blossom petals fall around me, seemingly coming from nowhere. I climb more stairs until I am in front of a large shrine. The shadow is there but it is held down by two light chains. It hisses and screeches the moment it sees me.
"YoU! lET me GO!"
It screams and struggles against the binding. I look around a bit more and I see a truck...the same truck that I erased back then, the truck driver was still inside but he's asleep thankfully. Is this...where my power takes them to ? Does this mean he's also here ? I looked and looked, nothing I could see resembled the person I know. I looked at the shadow again, it was still struggling, each time it tried to escape the chain shine causing intense pain to it.
"Master...you have returned."
A small fox lands in front of me, fur the same snow white fur as me. Its tail sway elegantly as it slowly walks and jumps onto my shoulder. Rubbing its neck onto my neck, caressing me with its body.
"Where...am I right now ?"
The fox jumps off and bows.
"You are in the Between, a place between existent and non-existent. You are our master, Daniel. "
More foxes appear as the one in front of me speaks.
"Why do I...have this place ?"
The elegant fox shakes its head before looking straight at me, its eyes staring with an uncanny humanity unfounded for a feral animal.
"In time you shall know Master Daniel, as I am Koyuki and all of us will watch over you, just know if you wish to use the thing you stored here-"
It looks at the shadow before continuing.
"Even the most vile creatures can be tamed by us."
All of the fox bows before disappearing into thin air, along with the shrine, the shadow and the truck. I look at my hands and see them slowly dissipating into dust. Closing my eyes as I feel the clarity of my power takes over.
I wake up on an unfamiliar bed as the sunshine through the window's curtain. The room I'm in looks like a normal bed room for guests since everything seems neatly put together but it has no personal touch of someone's bedroom. I'm not wearing my hoodie and trousers anymore but now wearing a T-shirt with some shorts. Where exactly am I?
Speed wolf is definitely related to this... he was the one who carried me when I lost consciousness after using too much power. Right...and my power, the Between. I wish someone could just explain everything to me outright instead of letting me wander the world for the past thirteen years.
"You're awake!"
I jump and turn to see a speed wolf standing in the door of the room. He's a golden fur wolf and he's not wearing any shirt, just some jeans. He's holding a cup of coffee while watching me, doesn't he realize how hard I'm blushing right now ? Wait he can see me right now...shit, He can see me.
"Even if you use your power here, it won't work."
He slowly walks toward the bed and I hide under the blanket, hiding from the large beast coming toward me.
"This is the Hero Corp HQ. This is where I live and this is where you will be staying from now on."
I poke my head out of the blanket seeing him sitting on a chair next to my bed. My power doesn't work here ? Did he say I will stay here from now on ?
"I-I um..."
God...it's been so long since I talked to someone and they don't forget me instantly. He's dressing so casually though...I'm dressing too casually.
"Ok, let's start with the introduction ok ? My name is Aki Akagawa, you may know by my hero name Speed Wolf."
His name is Aki, and he's Speed Wolf and he brought me to the HQ of the heroes society.
"Your turn foxy, I would look you up in the system but it's like you don't exist at all."
And I make sure that I will never show up in any system...of course now that I'm here, I won't have a choice.
"My...name is Daniel Jehovah."
I muttered out and he raised an eyebrow, sipping his cup of coffee before setting it down, on the nightstand.
"That's all? What's your hero name ?"
"What ?! I-I'm not...a hero. If anything I should be arrested for everything I have done..."
I look down, now thinking back at everytime I stole something from someone or broke into someone else's home, using their appliance and food.
"What do you mean by that and why were you in Japan ?"
I hide beneath the blanket again but he grabs it, pulling me up, hugging it with my life.
"Come on kid, I'm trying to help you here."
"I...I stole a lot of stuff. I use my power to make it seem like they don't exist at all so no one ever notices. I have been doing this for thirteen years since I was 10."
I tell him and he lets go of the blanket which I quickly retreat under.
" You have been alone for thirteen years ? "
I didn't answer him, it was true that I was alone for that entire time, hiding from everything in plain sight. It's for the best though, I won't hurt anyone if no one knows who I am.
The blanket protecting me got yanked off again, this time quicker than I could hold on to it. What comes after that I don't register for a few seconds. Aki is hugging me tightly. He's so warm... what is this feeling in me right now.
"Aki! It's fine! I'm used to being alone. Honestly I'm used to it. In fact I like-"
He interrupts me, saying quiet into my ears but his voice is firm with a low growl.
"No...when you defeat the shadow. You want to be able to talk to someone else, you want to live. You don't like being alone so stop lying to yourself."
I don't answer...I don't want to answer, tears fall down from my eyes as I try to break the hug, try to disappear into nothingness again but all I can do right now is put my arms up and hug him back.
"I promise from today onward, you will never be alone ever again. I will always be by your side when you need it. I'll be the shoulder when you need to cry."
He keeps going and I sob into his shoulder, the tears that I thought that were all dried up now come pouring out like a damn being broken. What was going on with me...it's dangerous for him to be with me, why would I let him get this close to me...
When he breaks the hug, I feel disappointed, feeling empty, I miss the warmth of his body...the affection. He pats my head before leaving the room, letting me rest while he discusses what will happen to me in the future. The Hero Corp isn't exactly happy that I have been under the radar for that long.
For the next three weeks Aki visits my room everyday, explaining the situation. I still refuse to leave my room, treating it as my personal prison. Aki didn't force me to leave but he always suggested it whenever he visited.
My power is also going to be tested due to how dangerous it can be if used malevolently. I'm gonna be monitored 24/7 because of it as well... maybe it's better this way. Aki said they would accommodate me accordingly.
Aki is assigned to be my guardian and both of us agree immediately to that but the CEO said at least two more heroes should be assigned to be my guardian in order to train me and control me. Aki is opposed to that but he couldn't do much to stop the CEO. I stayed in that room for three weeks straight while Aki brought food, drinks and recreational appliances for me to enjoy. I tried to refuse him but he is one stubborn Wolf, I'm trying to punish myself here and he's spoiling me like a kid.
It is 10 am and I'm playing a video game that Aki brought me. I'm currently on the final boss, struggling to learn the attack pattern and attacking at the same time. It is frustrating to say the least but it's fun at the same time.
"WHERE IS THAT LITTLE FOX?!"
A loud voice booms into my room causing me to jump and quickly hide under the blanket, it's not Aki's voice but I can hear his muffle voice along with the loud voice yelling through the wall. The sound of the door opening makes me jump and I instinctively try to activate my power but I can feel it was useless. I hear a couple steps from the doorway heading toward me before the blanket gets yanked off from me, faster than I can react.
In front of me is a large red bear known as Wildfire, the superhero famous in the US. He's loud when he's fighting and he's loud when he's talking casually. The orphanage I used to stay in was located in the US and I stayed in the US for three years after I left the orphanage, I have encountered him before, of course he couldn't see or hear me but for some reason whenever I was around...he would always look the general direction I was in.
"Good to see you again little guy!"
Aki chimes in from behind the massive bear, managing to get in front of him while crossing his arm, I hide behind Aki. Wildfire isn't a bad person and I have helped him even if he will never notice it. I was twelve back then when he was fighting a large winged beast, I just erased his presence for a few seconds, buying him enough time to burn off its wing and kill it.
"I'm not gonna eat him Wolfy, just want to thank him for helping with the Giant moth eleven years ago."
Aki looks confused and I'm surprised that he could tell it was me. His smug is quite annoying though.
"How...did you know it was me ?"
I ask cautiously, my power should have hid me perfectly but not only did he know it was me that did it but he remembers me.
"Not many people know about this but not only do I have the power to control fire but I can also see heat. You, even with your ability to erase your presence, is devoid of heat. It's like seeing a black area in white board. It's cold as ice."
I looked at him...dumbfounded, he was right. I have always felt cold. I slowly moved away from Aki. Looking at the bear, he dwarfed me completely...he could easily crush me with his arm let alone incinerate me with his fire. Somehow I feel safe when looking at him like I did with Aki.
"Are...you also my guardian?"
He smiles and nods before scooping me with an arm. For someone so big, he is fast. He starts moving toward the door and I start to panic under his grip.
" Come on, we need to go outside. I'm your guardian because I can see you. We need one more person who can teach you and we can't really do that without you talking to someone else beside me and Aki."
He's right but I still don't want to go outside. Aki gives me a thumb up, his eyes full of sympathy. Wildfire continues to the door, the heat from him warming me. Wait...my veil is up.
"My power was never disabled... then how did you guys see me ?"
Wildfire stops in the hall, Aki follows behind us as well, stopping in his tracks. He looks confused.
"Wolfy, the kid is right... the nullstone isn't stopping his power."
Aki nods and both of them continue on but the air around us is much more serious now. Aki is concerned while Wildfire is fully focused on something. Meanwhile I'm still being carried by the waist by Wildfire. I give up struggling for a while he carries me, the hallway isn't very populated but I do recognise some heroes here. The Hero Corp is a worldwide organization so seeing heroes all over the globe doesn't really surprise me.
We arrive at what looks like a large tube. Before I can ask what it is for, Wildfire throws me in and I feel myself move with high-speed, I scream for a good 5 seconds until it shoots me into a room with a thud. 10 seconds later, Wildfire and Aki enter the room, much more gently than I did.
"What the heck was that ?!?!"
I growl out and Wildlife laughs while Aki crouches down checking if I'm hurt too badly or not. I glare at the bear and he visibly shivers, holding himself as if he's cold.
"What do you need from me, Aki, Barry ?"
I turn to the voice to see an Otter, sitting in front of a desk. He has a scar over his eyes, his expression is unreadable. In fact his face seems almost blurry to me. The only reason why I could tell he is an Otter is the small picture showing the same blurry face beast with an otter beastress and three otter cubs. Also did he just call Wildfire, Barry ?
"Mr. Henderson, we would like to report our progress on the snow fox progress."
That's what they called me? Snow fox...can't even give me a cool name. The air around me becomes colder and the sounds start to become more and more muffle. Aki notices the change as well, quickly notifying the other two beasts, their voice becoming smaller and smaller. Aki quickly grabs me and moves me closer to the otter. The otter becomes less and less blurry as I get closer to him, now I can clearly see his face. There's a certain air of intensity around him, his piercing gaze observing both of them, he takes out a small Japanese charm out of his drawer. With a quick flick of his hand, the charm is stuck on my body.
A warm glow filled me and my body started to relax under this warmth. I snuggle into Aki's arm, it's like hugging him three weeks ago.
"So your ability is Magic related... how annoying."
The otter states while taking a handful of charms from his draw, handing it to Aki.
"I think an introduction is long overdue for us. My name is Sergyl Henderson, CEO of Hero Corp."
For the first time since I saw him, he smiles.
"I'm Barry Ignatius or WildFire if you want to call me that. I will be your second guardian and protector along with Aki."
Barry seems to have settled down after the effect of my power subsided. The charm stuck on my body is gone now but the warmth feeling is persistent. Aki coughs a little, catching my attention as I see him nodded toward Sergyl. I should probably introduce myself...
"My-my name is Daniel Jehovah, I'm 23 years old and I'm thankful that you guys are...taking care of me."
I'm definitely blushing red like a tomato right now. Aki chuckles a bit, Sergyl smiles while Barry looks a bit dumbfounded.
"...You're 23 ?!?!?"
