Day 11 - Summon

You thought you were away from your old job, if you could even call it that. It was in the past now. Right?

You found yourself daydreaming about your "internship." In all respects, it was more like a kidnapping than an internship. You remember being swept up, strapped into a machine, and a long, hazy, comfortable blur until you were rescued by Director Vinyl and brought back to Nex-Vinyl Labs.

You twirled some wool around your finger and tried to remember. The Director told yo uthat you should probably just leave it and not worry, but you were undeniably curious about what had happened in that sizable block of missing time. You were told it was weeks.

Weeks. Weeks of your life spent serving Dr. Jen Faustus at her laboratory, without so much as a single hint of what you'd been doing. Every attempt to probe your memory of that time was like trying to push yourself into a thick, warm gel. You could only remember the feelings - blissful servitude, calm, mindless diligence. A heavy haze that made you feel like you weren't even in control of your own body.

You blinked and looked at the clock on the wall. You were still working, of course. No time for drifting off. If this became a problem. you'd have to ask Director Vinyl for some help getting focused. You were sure she'd be more than happy to provide that.

The phone rang. It was so loud you flinched. You didn't usually get phone calls, so you weren't used to the tone being so loud. You checked the number and your breath hitched.

It was FausTech Labs. It was her. Calling Director Vinyl's public number. You, being his secretary, would have to be the one who picked up.

You weren't sure what to do. On one hand, you thought it was a little odd that someone who had kidnapped and brainwashed an employee (you) was still associated with your company at all, and on the other hand... you wanted to hear that voice again. Her voice.

You chewed your nails.

It probably wouldn't even be her. I mean, Director Vinyl had a secretary, surely Dr. Faustus would.

You needed to pick up the phone. You were a secretary. It didn't matter who was calling, you had to pick it up.

You picked up the phone. You swallowed.

"Hello? Uhm, Nex-Vinyl Labs, Director Vinyl's office. Valentine Layne speaking." You said.

"Good evening, Mr. Layne." Dr. Faustus responded.

Your world shook. Your eyes unfocused. A cascade of memories triggered by those words, that tone - a trigger long forgotten, but still deeply embedded within you. Your mouth fell open as drool dripped from your mouth. Your mind was blanking itself out, as certain parts of you that had long been asleep woke up and began their task.

You were a heavy cloud. Your head felt like an expanding emptiness, your chin pressing into your chest slightly as it hung on your shoulders.

"Good evening, Dr. Faustus." You replied, automatically. You felt disconnected from yourself, like someone else had taken the reigns.

"Good boy, Lenti. Very good boy. I see that's still working. Oh how I've missed hearing your voice, Mr. Layne." She growled softly into the phone, making you shiver.

"Thank you, Dr. Faustus." You replied.

"Now - I believe you have some technical documents for me." She said. "You're going to collect all of those in a folder and come on back to work, isn't that right, Mr. Layne?"

"Yes, Dr. Faustus."

"Good boy. See you soon."

She hung up, leaving you alone in the quiet of the office. Her words were still echoing around in your head, keeping you docile and perfectly focused on your new task. You had been summoned back to work - your real job, your real purpose - after waiting so long. You didn't want to keep your boss waiting.
