#1 of The Road to Happiness

This is a joint series that me and my wonderful mate are doing. It's kinda a prelude to soulmates basically just how we met not really but you know. It contains a part written by me and one part written by Tom. We will do this for each chapter and alternate posting the chapters so Tom will post the next one. At the end we will put all the chapters into one big story and post it on both of our profiles. I hope you all enjoy.

The large black lupine sat at the bar, a sneer on his face as the warm whiskey rolled down his throat starting a feeling of fire inside of him. He was 23 but had a look in his eye no man that age should have. He tilted the glass up, draining the rest of the spirits in one big gulp. Then in a thick Russian accent he called to the bartender.

"Give me another."

The cougar behind the bar eyed him warily, surprised this man could still be sitting and talking straight after so many drinks. He turned his head to look at the three empty liter whiskey containers and shook his head.

"Bud I think maybe you should be getting home," The bartender began.

The wolf snarled and leaned forward, taking a fistful of the bartender's apron and pulling his face close to his snarling visage.

"I'm done when I say I'm done," The wolf replied.

With that he released the shaken cougar and sat back watching as the cougar moved shakily to refill his glass. The wolf just gave a big grunt and sat back turning around to observe the bar. Some were standing and staring at him, others giving him menacing looks. He didn't care what they thought he just wanted to escape, escape the world he was born into and trained into.

With a sniffle he reached down and straightened his military uniform his name tag stating he was Wolgram Nosnikta, he wasn't truly sure why he still wore it but nonetheless he did. He'd worn it through the worst of times in his life and he'd always made it through, no matter what.

He turned back to the bar his drink waiting. He picked it up and threw his head back draining the cup dry, then, suddenly, something smacked him upside the head. The wolf grunted and started to fall out of the chair but caught himself stumbling forward out of range of his attackers.

He stood up tall, at his full height of 6'3" although he seemed closer to 6'4" he still was intimidating. Wolgram stood, lips peeled back in a menacing manner. He stared at the dingo and two wolves that had attacked him. One was as tall as him but they were all obviously eyeing his muscular frame trying to figure out how to take him down.

He automatically focused on the dingo in front with the pool stick that had just hit him. He snarled and leaped forward dodging a clumsy swing from the drunken dingo and snapping a left hook into the side of his muzzle. The dingo fell away, dropping the pool stick and clutching his face. Wolgram turned back to the smaller lupine and gave a come on motion. The wolf charged, leaping at him but Wolgram just stepped to the right and with a heave picked the one end of the pool table up to form a barrier.

The other lupine wasn't as dumb though and swerved around the side to get to Wolgram. Wolgram turned, expecting another easy defeat but stumbled and saw the glint of hard steel a moment too late. Wolgram grunted in pain as the knife dove into his ribs hitting them and sticking there. His vision swam and bright white flashes of searing pain swam through his mind, but he shook it off and with a great growl threw the attacker back. He then reached down and pulled the knife free with a jerk.

The wolves turned to look at each other and then turned around picking up their dingo friend and running out the door. Wolgram just grunted and tried to straighten his uniform again. He took a deep breath then took a step forward to the bar. Suddenly, everything winked out of color and he coughed, putting his paw up to his mouth. When he looked down he saw blood on it. He stumbled backwards trying to stop and tried to grab onto the pool table. His fingers couldn't grip it and he feel back into the wall slowly sliding down into a sitting position.

He blinked slowly and could feel the warmth of his lifeblood slowly spreading and staining his black fur. He then heard from what seemed like a great distance.

"Somebody help me."

He opened his eyes to see a slim white wolf standing over him.

"What do you want?' Wolgram muttered weakly.

"Just calm down man," The smaller lupine began, "I'm gonna get you some help."

With that he slowly dragged him to a car and put him in the back seat and took off. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Wolgram wasn't really sure what was happening. He just knew that he had to stay awake and that he was losing blood fast. He couldn't really tell what the coyote was talking about or who he was talking to in his strained state; his simple grasping of English had all but flown.

He didn't know how long he was in that back seat but next thing he knew he was suddenly hoisted out of the car and put onto a dolly with people leaning over him and shining a light in his eyes. He grunted and tried to shy away, but they didn't stop. Then it all stopped as he was put in a bed and a mask was put on his muzzle. He then slowly drifted off into unconsciousness.

Wolgram bolted into an upright position and looked at his surroundings. He knew he had been injured and unconscious for a while from the pain in his ribs and the pounding in his head, but that served to make him more alert. He looked at the pearly white sterile room and the soft cotton sheets on his body. He then looked underneath and saw he was naked besides the dressings on his chest.

He cocked his ears toward the door, wondering in what prison he was being held this time. But he relaxed immediately as he heard the American voices out the door. Everything then came back to him, the bar the fight, and everything. He sighed and dropped back to the pillows looking up at the ceiling.

"What am I going to do now?" he thought to himself.

Suddenly he heard a toilet flush from the bathroom in his room. His head whipped to the door and watched warily. Wolgram relaxed as a certain wolf walked out, adjusting his shirt and shorts and closing the door behind him. Wolgram scanned up and down the wolf's body feeling jittery inside as certain thought popped into his head.

"Oh he's cute"

The wolf blushed; glad he had black fur to hide it. The other lupine coughed and turned to sit down in the chair next to the door. He then saw Wolgram looking at him and put on a big smile and walked over.

"Hey man," the wolf began, "I was worried I might have got to you too late."

Wolgram looked at the wolf's face, noting how the smile reached his eyes and he relaxed. The sincerity of the smile put him at ease and made him feel even jitterier.

"Thank you for helping me." Wolgram replied, finally smiling back

No problem dude, it's the least that I can do, "The lupine said with a wave and a wide smile, "Hey by the way are you Russian?"

Wolgram started to sigh but stopped at the wolf's curious expression.

"I mean it does seem obvious but you know, I've never met a Russian and well I'm just curious," The wolf explained.

Americans had always asked him this question and usually he just sighed and ignored them, but it was different with this stranger. He felt strangely connected to him and at ease around, him like the weight on his shoulders was gone for perhaps the first time in months. He smiled widely and sincerely and chuckled.

"Yes I am Russian, well if you want to be technical I'm part Russian and part Romanian, but I was trained in the Russian military and was with them for my whole life it seems," Wolgram replied.

He didn't know why he had told the wolf all this but he felt he could trust him.

"Oh that's cool at least to me," The lupine rambled quickly, still smiling.

"I guess hey I want to really thank you for saving me," Wolgram said.

The wolf seemed to blush for a second his fur turning red on his right cheek thought the black on the left covered it then looked curious.

Wolgram took a deep breath, and thought to himself "oh man here I go'"

"Would you let me take you out to dinner to make it up?" Wolgram asked.

The lupine looked taken aback and Wolgram flattened his ears on his head, his heart beating insanely fast.

"Oh man, he's not gay, I messed up," he thought to himself, letting out a whine.

The wolf leaned down and whispered in his ear, "I didn't think you were gay too but sure I'd love to."

"Well I'm not really open about it," Wolgram replied, still looking nervous

"I'm not either," the wolf said with a wink.

With that he planted a kiss on Wolgram's cheek and stood up, his tail wagging behind him. The lupine offered his paw.

"I'm Tom by the way," The wolf began.

Wolgram's tail wagged under the covers and he smiled widely shaking Tom's paw

"Wolgram it's nice to meet you," The wolf replied

"And I hope more," Wolgram thought inside hoping maybe he had finally found some happiness.

The smaller wolf walked over to a desk in the hospital room and grabbed a piece of paper. Tom grabbed a pen and began to write something down on the paper. He walked back over to the wolf.

"Here's my number," Tom began, "Call me when you get out and we'll go out to dinner."

"Ok," Wolgram began, "So what are your interests?"

"Well," Tom began, sitting at the foot of Wolgram's bed, "I watch soccer, love movies, like rock and metal music."

"Me too!" Wolgram replied, "Well the rock and metal part at least."

"Cool cool, what bands?" The wolf asked.

"Korn, System of A Down," Wolgram replied, "Bands like that."

"I like your taste in music," Tom said, "I like metal core more myself, you know, Avenged Sevenfold, Killswitch,Atreyu."

"Eeh," Wolgram began, "They're ok."

The conversation continued on that note for some time. The two canines talked about their likes and dislikes, branching off into life stories and careers. Wolgram found that he shared much in common with the smaller wolf, even though the two had very differing backgrounds. They were debating over the wolf's soccer interest when a young ocelot nurse walked in.

"I'm sorry sir," She began, gesturing to the smaller lupine, "But you're going to have to leave."

"Come on," Wolgram said, "He's not hurting anybody."

"Sir, you need your rest," The nurse urged.

"I'll be fine," Wolgram said, "I'll just shake it off, I always do."

"No Wolgram," Tom said, standing up and placing a paw on his shoulder, "You need the rest, call me when you get out ok."

The wolf opened his mouth to speak again, but was cut off by the concerned gaze of the wolf. Wolgram nodded, and Tom patted the wolfs shoulder on the uninjured side. Tom walked out stopping to lean around the corner. He blew the wolf a kiss, smiled and went on his way.

Wolgram stared at the space that Tom occupied and smiled back. The nurse turned off the lights wordlessly, darkening the room and leaving the wolf to his own devices. The wolf turned over onto his side and with a happy sigh went to sleep.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

A week later Tom was outside washing his car in the gorgeous sunshine. The weather had cleared up, after two weeks of gloomy overcast. There was a set of speakers a fair distance away from the spraying water, playing a song by none other than Avenged Sevenfold.

"I don't belong here, I gotta move on dear," The wolf sang to himself, as he finished rinsing off his car.

He walked over to turn off the hose and grab his speakers. Tom walked inside, throwing off his drenched shirt as he did. The white wolf was slender, although you could see the defined muscles in his arms and chest. He sat down with a sigh, turning off the speakers and grabbing a glass of brandy.

He sat down, taking a sip of the brown liquid. He couldn't help but think back on that fateful night a week ago. He was in the bar for the whole thing, even though he had barely drank. He could remember being drawn to the wolf, and he would have talked to him if not for the fact that he looked like an angry drunk.

So the wolf watched, sipping his drink as everything unfolded. He stared in shock as the fight broke out, yelling out for the wolf to watch out as the other wolf with the knife set upon him. As soon as it was over, the wolf was the first over there to try to help. He remembered looking into the wolf's eyes, and seeing remorse and sadness.

In no time at all it seemed, the wolf was in the backseat of his car, bleeding all over the place. Even then the wolf could not help but stare at the lupine, the musculature and those haunting eyes. There also was a nagging feeling that the wolf dying in the backseat was handsome. The hospital loomed up in the distance, and the smaller lupine sped up, the wolf nearly losing his grip on life.

The lupine followed the wolf into the hospital, stepping into the viewing booth to watch the doctors take care of the wolf. They stripped the big black canine of his clothes, making the white wolf blush. He tried his best not to stare, but he did, the black wolf's body mesmerizing him. After that, he got asked out on a date, which he was excited for.

The wolf sighed and took a sip of brandy.

"I do hope he's alright," He began.

All of a sudden, the wolf's phone rang across the room. Tom sighed and got up from his chair, walking slowly to his phone. He picked it up, the screen reading "Unknown Number". Tom answered.

"Hello."

A smile crept onto his face as the realization of who was calling him.

"Hey Wolgram," Tom said with a grin, "How are you doing?"

There wolf on the other end replied.

"Sure I'd love to go out for ribs tonight!" The wolf began his tail wagging, "Ok, I'll be ready for you to pick me up at 6, I'm excited, I live at 315 Skips Lane, bye."

The wolf hung up the phone, a giddy grin still on his face. He tossed back the glass of brandy and ran to the shower, stripping off his clothes as he went. If he was going on a date, then he would have to look nice. He jumped in the shower, the warm jets soothing his skin. He found the gayest looking bottle of shampoo and applied it into his fur, murring at the scent and the feeling of the suds.

After ten minutes of treating his fur with various fur product, he stepped out of the shower and toweled off. Tom opened up a drawer, filled to the brim with various hygenics. He began to brush and comb through his fur, taking care to make sure it was light and didn't clump. He then began to tend to his nails, making sure that they were up to par as well.

After brushing his teeth and giving his naked body a quick once over, he walked to his bedroom. He opened up the dresser in his bedroom, pulling out underwear and some socks. He put the items on and then went to the closet, where his one pair of dress clothes hung. Tom pondered them for a moment, and then shut the door. He was going to a ribs place, no need to dirty his fancy clothes.

Tom glanced over at the clock, seeing that it was already 5:30. He gasped with surprise at the time and went back over to the dresser, pulling out a pair of blue jeans and a Portland Timbers jersey. He put the clothes on, stopping in the bathroom one last time to put on some cologne, and sat out in the living room, fifteen minutes to spare.

He had just poured himself another glass of brandy when the sound of car tires reached thewolf's ears. He set the glass down, and ran for the bathroom a final time, making sure that he looked exemplary. There was a knock on the door, and the coyote ran to it, stopping to catch his breath before answering it.

"Who is it?" The wolf asked, already knowing who was there.

"Wolgram," The voice on the other side replied.

Tom breathed deeply to regain his composure and opened the door. The wolf's gaze was immediately brought to the wolf's eyes, the sadness and remorse replaced with a glimmer of hope and happiness. The wolf was also taken aback at how big the wolf was, standing at least two inches taller and possessing much more muscle.

Wolgram was wearing a red t-shirt with a black design on the front of it along with a pair of cargo shorts. There was a smile on his face, which Tom cheerfully returned.

"How are you feeling Wolgram?" Tom asked, "You're certainly looking much better."

"I feel much better," Wolgram replied, "So you ready to go?"

"Yeah," Tom said."

"After you," Wolgram began, gesturing for the smaller lupine to step by him.

The wolf returned the gesture with another smile, walking past the wolf with a happy sway to his hips. Wolgram looked down at them, quickly moving his gaze up to the white wolf's, who was looking back amusedly over his shoulder. Wolgram cleared his throat, and said.

"Your fur looks and smells divine."
