DAY 1

Seriously, dudes, nine hours in a plane and an hour in a car, my ass is no longer an ass, it's just a mutilated cushion of wolf butt muscles that have been paralyzed by sitting in place for too long, with nothing to do.

Wish that'd be the biggest problem i've had today, believe me, guys, it's not.

First off, the plane was weird, Like, whenever the crew made any announcements, first off they spoke some weird shit I understood nothing about, before someone who spoke English really badly finally told everyone that they were serving the food now, for example. Now that I'm actually in Finland I finally understand that they were speaking Finnish in the plane as well. I couldn't understand a single word! But guess that's part of going to weird ass country on the other side of the world, and I have to accept that.

Still, it's nothing compared to what was going on when I got out of the plane around six pm, feeling tired and my legs turned into jelly. I got out to get my bag from the luggage claim and then wandered out wondering if the...let me get this right now... A-L-A-K-O-R-K-E-A-V-U-O-R- I family had come to pick me up as a whole family. I shuffled my way to the arrivals lounge and was in a throng of wolves, lynxes, deer, moose and all kinds of furs that I suppose were mostly Finns, because everyone was going on talking something I could hardly understand a single word about, which was kind of worrying, but at least the signs everywhere had English written on them, so I wasn't completely lost.

I tried to look out for some lynxes around, and saw many, but none seemed like to be a family of a lynx dude, dad and mom, and maybe an optional little brother, and after a few minutes of walking around I started to wonder if they had shown up at all, or maybe they had the wrong day put in their calendar for my arrival, but then, oh shit, I saw a lynx girl holding some paper that had my name on it!

I thought WTF but then I went closer, and saw that the girl was standing with a tall male lynx and a female lynx, and standing there was also some small lynx dude, who had headphones on and was tapping on a phone in his paw.

They kinda noticed me then I guess because the girl holding the paper with my name written on it came over smiling and said like hi, am I Christopher, in pretty good English, and I said that I was. Then she told me that she was Karo, and I guess I gave a bit of a WTF face and I'm glad I didn't just blurt out that I thought that Karo was a dude's name, but guess you never know with these foreign names. So, yeah, I was getting hugged by a lynx girl I had thought to be a dude, and the other three came over and patted my back and there was paw-shaking and exchanging names.

Okay...I try to remember these the best I could...I'm not sure how to write them at all, but I think that the dad is called Marku or something like that, the mum is Lisa and the young dude is Miko, which sounds pretty weird too. I also learned that Karo is just a nickname and she's really called Karolina or something like that, which is kinda understandable, that's why I'm always called Chris, not Christopher.

Well, that was really the first shock, that the 18-year-old dude was actually a good-looking girl, but since I'm not really into girls, at least their daughter was safe from the hot exchange student wolf. We didn't chat there for too long but soon went out to the parking lot, and then walked through heaps of cars before we stopped next to a big Toyota, which was apparently the family car. I got to sit on the back with Karo and the young brother who wasn't really talking to me, while she was talking all the time, wondering if I wanted to grab something to eat or something, and as we pulled off the parking lot, I said, sure, I was pretty hungry and the plane food wasn't so bad. I was looking forward to my first bite of something foreign and exotic, though hoped it wasn't so weird, but I guess it couldn't have been less weird, because after a few minutes' of drive, I noticed a very familiar sign at the distance, and it didn't take long before we had driven to a McDonalds drive-in hatch!

Everyone ordered stuff and I got a cheeseburger and a Coke, and it really did taste just like back in the States, I learned, and told as much to my hosts, who laughed a bit, and the little brother said something in Finnish, and wondered if he was calling me a stupid fuck or something in a language I couldn't understand. Gotta say for them, they might have had a weird ass accent when they spoke, but I didn't have much problem understanding what they were saying, so guess it was a good thing that I didn't have to worry about that.

We seemed to drive on and on, just going down some highway of sorts, and then I asked when we'd be in Helsinki, and told them that I was really anxious to see the city. The dad, who was driving, just laughed and said that we're not going there, we're going to their home, and they don't live in Helsinki!

I was seriously WTF at that moment, and then Karo explained to me that they lived near Helsinki, and that her parents worked there but drove in to work every day, but they actually lived about a half an hour's drive away, because living out there was cheaper. That sounded a bit weird to me, but I guess that it wasn't so weird, I mean, I lived in a suburb as well, so how different could it be?

Well, it is different, I mean...there's nothing here!!

We drove and drove and drove and went past houses and stuff, and then there was a huge gas station, and what I presume was some kind of a supermarket, and that was the last sign of civilization I saw besides houses sitting on the middle of fields, surround the road. I had just about finished my burger and Coke when we finally turned over, and Karo told me that this was their road. Dad Marku drove us to a halt next to a two-storied green house, standing in the middle of a grassy field, and behind them were the trees I had wondered about on that photo, as a background to the yard. There was also another car standing there, and realized that they must have two cars, just like my own family did!

"This is home!" Karo said, and I could only stare out of the window at the desolate house where I was going to be staying for three weeks!

I think I'm too tired to carry on tonight, I'll tell you some more about my first night tomorrow, when I get the chance. I'm just about to get to bed.

See you tomorrow!
