#1 of Mark and Chester

Mark and Chester have a conversation. Just a short vignette to keep my attention. It's awfully hard to start writing, but hopefully momentum will build, and you have to start somewhere. That said, not sure if this will lead to much more, or where it will go if it does, but you never know. Thanks for reading!

Chester was reclining on his couch with his laptop open when Mark entered the apartment with a knock. Whatever the bull had been doing - Mark suspected masturbating - he halted quickly and sat up nonchalantly, leaving a space on the couch for his friend, surreptitiously closing the laptop as he did so.

"Today is a boxers only morning?" the fox said, sitting down.

"Every day is a boxers only morning," the bull replied, matter-of-factly.

"So no luck with the job yet, then," the fox replied with the same tone. Chester said nothing. "Look, you've been selling off your stuff to pay the rent, but obviously you can't keep up with this. I mean," he nudged a milk crate with his foot, "I do like your new coffee table, but seriously." The bull sighed and stood up, putting his laptop on the crate and ambling off to the kitchen.

Mark quickly popped open the laptop and looked at the paused image before closing it again with an odd look on his face. Didn't he say he had a girlfriend?

"What?" the bull asked as he re-entered, looking at the fox with a suspicious glance while chewing something. He swallowed, wiping his mouth with the back of his arm before returning to the couch.

"What? Nothing. I was just saying that, well... I know this hasn't been going well. If you can live without the TV, you can ditch you're cable and use my WiFi, I don't mind, if it'll help. And you can come over and watch stuff if you want, it's no big deal."

Chester sighed. "I... I appreciate it, yeah. That would help me a lot." The shaggy brown bull leaned on to Mark a bit, which didn't bother the fox at all.

"I might ask for favours from time to time though," he said with a grin, elbowing the great bull slightly to move him off. Chester snorted, and reached for his laptop, placing it on his crotch. Mark raised an eyebrow. "Though - and I only ask this out of curiosity - have you ever thought about hooking up with your girlfriend again?"

Chester shook his head. "No, no, that ship has sailed. She's with someone else now, I'm pretty sure. Anyway, that was ages ago."

"What, like years? You haven't been with anyone since?"

The bull just stared off into space. "No. Why? It's just... not a priority. Especially with the way things have been lately." Mark noticed him anxiously griping the laptop.

The fox shrugged. "Just a question. Anyway, it's probably for the best. You're junk's as big as my forearm, I'll bet you wrecked her completely." The bull snorted, and smiled, but said nothing. Well that's something, at least, the fox thought to himself, appreciating the smile before narrowing his eyes deviously. "Anyway, I have some stuff I have to do, why don't you make arrangements to cancel your cable, and I'll catch you later?"

The bull nodded and looked the smaller fox in the eyes. "Mark, I really appreciate this. I'll get you back, I promise."

Mark gazed into those great grey watery eyes. "No problem, buddy. I know what it's like. All good."

And the fox left the apartment, heart racing.
