A Shot in the Dark
Hey guys! This here is the first in a little series that I'll be working on. Being that it's just the beginning, it probably won't be too terribly exciting yet. It's nothing too crazy, just a story about two guys who meet up, fall for each other, you know, that kind of thing. While there is nothing overly inappropriate yet, there will be in time. I assure you of that! All characters and situations are made up.
If gay love/romance isn't your thing, please don't read any further. The same goes if you shouldn't be reading it.
This is the first thing I've written in a long time, so any thoughts, comments, opinions, etc. are welcome!
"Come on, 5-o'clock." That was pretty much the only thing on Luka's mind. Not that he had anything special to look forward to, just some small-talk with his parents when he got home, but anything was better than being stuck at work. It was a day like almost every other, the occasional customer yelling, small kids screaming through the store, another soda spilled on the floor.
During one of his adventures out on the sales floor with a mop, someone had Dr. Pepper running down the counter, he was approached by a rather tall Bernese Mountain dog. "Excuse me, sir, but could I bother you for a minute?"
"Sure! How can I...help you?" Luka accidentally paused briefly, taken back by the gorgeous dog in front of him.
"Well, I'm new to the area, and I've never been to a place like this. I was wondering if maybe you would have a suggestion on what would be good to eat here?" he said with a smile.
Luka replied, "Well, I have to eat here more days than not, so I think I can steer you in the right direction!" Normally he would just pick something off the menu and sell it off as being the best tasting thing in the store, but not this time. He was going to milk out all of the time he could with this one. "So, is there anything in particular you like? Dislike?"
"Nah, not really. I'll eat about anything. Except fish. Blech!"
"Haha, I like your tastes. I can't stand seafood, either." Luka giggled.
As he looked through the menu, Luka's newfound eye candy said, "I'm Jake, by the way. I normally introduce myself first, but when my stomach is growling at me, sometimes my manners take a back seat."
"Oh, that's quite ok, Jake. You have already been far friendlier than most that come in here. I'm Luka, but I'm guessing you already knew that," Luka pointed at his nametag. During which, he realized that he couldn't stop smiling and hoped that Jake wouldn't take notice.
"What? That's what's wrong with everyone today. How anyone could be rude or inconsiderate towards someone as nice as you is far beyond me," Jake whispered. Luka's tail instantly started wagging. "How's the pizza?"
Luka struggled to answer Jake's question, still shocked by what he had said. "Uh, pizza, uh, oh yeah, it's actually pretty good. I'd definitely recommend getting bacon on it, though. Bacon completes a pizza, for me at least."
Jake's face lit up, "YES! Someone else that understands that bacon belongs on pizza!" His tail had begun to wag a bit as well, although Luka didn't take notice to it. He was stuck in what seemed to be a trance, all caused by the black, rust, and white colored body beside him.
With a big smile and a wink, Luka replied, "Bacon belongs on almost everything."
"You're darn right it does," Jake said, as he pulled out his wallet to make sure he had money.
"Well, I better get back there and get your pizza going. It isn't gonna cook itself!"
"Hey, Luka?" Jake said, rather quietly, "Thanks for all of your help."
"Anytime, Jake. I love helping when I can," Luka said as he walked back to the prep area to start the pizza.
"About time you stop flirting!" was the first thing Luka heard as he placed the pizza carefully in the oven. Luka looked over at his coworker, Katy, who had been watching him the whole time, and gave her a brief glare. "Don't deny it, either."
"Shut it, Kate," is all that Luka could muster. She had been the one that had called him out on the whole liking guy's thing. Most didn't ever take notice, but she had a way with picking up on subtle things that most overlook. He walked over to her after he was sure that his new friend's pizza was safely cooking. "Was it that obvious?"
She gave him her foxy grin, "Plain as day, my friend. Your tail was going the whole time and your face looked like you had just found a million bucks. It was actually kinda cute."
"Oh, stop it!" Luka said, as he walked back to check on the pizza. "It's not like he's even into guys anyway, let alone me."
"Uh, Luka, his tail was going, too, every time you made eye contact with him. And look at him now, he's all smiles. He looks like an entirely different dog now, compared to five minutes ago when he walked in here." Katy walked over to Luka and whispered, "You should make a move on him!"
Luka's jaw dropped, "Are you crazy??!? There's no way that he would be interested in me!" As he stood beside the oven, awaiting the timer to go off, Luka couldn't help but daydream about Jake. Thoughts were racing through his mind about anything and everything to do with that tri-colored hunk. "What would people say about us? I wonder if he's that adorable all the time. Hmm, he definitely looks good in those shorts he has on, I wish I could get a closer look at hi..." Luka's rambling to himself was interrupted by the oven timer going off, signaling that the pizza was finished. "Whoa, I really shouldn't think about that kinda thing at work, heaven knows I don't need to get all worked up here!" After a brief second to clear his head, Luka grabbed the pizza and started walking towards the delivery area. While walking with Jake's pizza in paw, Luka caught glimpse of a Sharpie and instantly knew what he had to do.
"Thanks for stopping in today, I really loved having the chance to help you. Hopefully I will see you again very soon! - Luka"
"There, that should do it." He had never written anything on someone's pizza box before, but then again, he had never felt such a strong connection with someone so quickly.
"Hey Jake, I have your pizza. Sorry that it took so long, it's hard to rush these things." Luka was trying his best to make eye contact, but was struggling.
With a smile and wag of his tail, Jake hurried to the counter and grabbed his box. "Awesome! Thank you, Luka! I'm starving, and I'm betting since you made it, it will hit just the spot."
Hearing that made Luka even more excited than before, even though he didn't think it was possible. "You are too sweet!"
After a quick glance at the container his lunch was in, Jake looked back up at the white dog behind the counter. "Uh, hey Luka? Just a shot in the dark, but, uh...I was wondering, what time do you get off of work? I'm not doing anything myself, so I was wondering if you would want to hang or something. I mean, if you don't want to, or are busy today, I completely understand, it's just that I tho..."
Luka quickly cut him off, "I'm done at 5, and I would love to do something with you."
With that response, Jake's tail was wagging so much, he thought it was going to fall off. "Really??!? Oh cool! You really made my day, Luka! You just have no idea!"
"I think I might have an idea Jake, I might have an idea." With a wink, Luka raised his paw up and gave his friend a goodbye wave. "I'll see you at 5 then?"
As Jake was headed for the door, he looked back and said, "I wouldn't miss it for the world."
While Jake made his way back to his car, Luka couldn't help but stare the entire time. There was something about the way he walked, so confident and sexy, it was too hard not to stare.
"Hey you horndog! Quit your staring! You boys are all the same!" Kate muttered to herself.
Instantly feeling zapped back to reality, Luka glared at Kate, "I'm sorry, my dear Kate, but that was the very definition of irresistible. I would think, of everyone I know, that you would understand that."
"Oh, I do, Luka, I do. I just can't believe that look in your eyes. I've never seen you so happy."
"Well Kate, I haven't felt like this in a long time. That might have something to do with it." Luka looked up at the clock, saying to himself, "Come on, 5-o'clock."
Without missing a beat, Kate snuck up behind Luka, "Someone has a date! I didn't think you had it in you, Luka. For a minute there, I thought you were going to panic, but you managed to pull it off."
Luka left out a big sigh, "Kate, with the last few minutes that I've just had, I don't know that I can take too much of you picking on me. Look, I'm going to go clean up these containers, if you need me, I'll be in the back. Ok?" And with that, Luka grabbed everything that he had emptied while making Jake's pizza, along with a few other various things that had been lying around.
After several minutes had passed by, there was still no sight of Luka. Normally he was one of the most efficient employees in the store, but not this time. Growing tired of being out with the customers alone, Kate went back to check on her coworker. "Oooooh Mr. Wusky-butt! Where are you?!?"
"Ugh, I'll be there in a minute, Kate! And why do you insist on calling me that? It's hardly appropriate." And with that, Luka rinsed off his paws and headed back out front. "Are you happy now, Kate? I'm here."
Kate ran up to Luka's side, "About time, Wusky-butt. I thought you left me for Jake already."
"Seriously, Kate, what's up with the 'Wusky-butt'? I know you want a piece, but really!" Despite the fact that he had absolutely no interest in her, and she had a man of her own, they had a very unique relationship, which was usually borderline inappropriate.
With her sly grin, she whispered, "Oh you wish. Besides, I guess I should start calling you 'Jake's-butt, seeing that he will be all over that in no time."
"Oh, you didn't just say that! You are terrible!" Now fully embarrassed, Luka could only walk away. Thinking to himself, he thought, "Well, I probably wouldn't have any issues with letting Jake...well...hehe."
The rest of his shift was like any other day, a mess here, a jerk there, except for one difference, the thought of getting to spend time with Jake. After what seemed like an eternity, Luka heard Kate yell across the store, "Hey Mr. I've got a hot date, it's 5-o'clock, so you better get yourself outta here pronto!"
Without hesitating for a second, Luka dropped everything, ran into the back and put his stuff away, and was punched out and ready to go faster than he had ever been before. "Despite you picking on me for most of the shift, I have to thank you, Kate. This wouldn't have happened without you there, pushing me. I owe you."
And with that, Luka was out the doors. Instantly he felt the fresh air blowing against his fur, relieved to be free from all of his work attire. Not even five seconds later, his awaiting date came into sight, climbing out of his car, which was a beautiful shade of red. A warm, fuzzy feeling took over, along with a tail that wouldn't stop. Luka ran up to him, "Jake! You made it."
