Story by Cyberuis on SoFurry

A little story I decided to write just because. It's marked adult just for some mentioning of boy bits and suggestive language, nothing too explicit.

Also, maybe a little clarification, all the characters are feral in appearance but sentient if it seems confusing.

Beneath the canopy of towering trees, she wandered through the woods. Her white fur was easily distinguishable amongst the dingy greens and browns of the forest floor. She pulled on the cloak that hid her face, anxiousness provoking heightened paranoia. As she weaved between the oaken pillars, her ears twitched constantly in an attempt to hear even the faintest sign that she was being followed. Every step she took, her anxiety increased and the distance to his liar became smaller. She had only been there once, but it was an unforgettable experience. He was so strange; unlike any of his kind she had met before. She had to see him again. The idea of this visit had loomed in the back of her mind for weeks now. She told herself that it was just a passing feeling after her ordeal, but the thought never went away. It slowly gnawed at her, until it could not be ignored. She was taken from her musing as she noticed a familiar rocky outcropping. Hidden amongst the bramble and bushes, the entrance to his den was barely visible. As she stood at the threshold, a quiver went through her body, her anxiety reaching its apex as she raised a timid paw to rap against the door. Her heart beat furiously in her chest as she waited for the repercussions of her actions.

His ears picked up the faint knock over the chatter of the radio. Wiping his paws on an old rag and turning down the volume, he casually strode to the door and opened it. Standing before him, rather awkwardly and clearly uncomfortable, was Ginger.

"Um...hello Ginger, what brings you to my neck of the woods?"

"Hello Lambert, I...I came to, um, I just came by to visit."

"A rather long walk to just visit me, but come in," he opened the door wider and ushered her in, taking her cloak and hanging it on a small curved root by the door. She walked rather stiffly to the couch and sat down. It was slightly disturbing; she was usually quite chipper. He visited the small town often to sell his goods, and Ginger was always a delight to chat with.

"Would you like something to drink? Tea maybe?"

She shifted in her seat slightly, "Water would be fine, thank you," and with that he went off to his small kitchenette.

Yes, she was always quite nice. And considering he was a wolf in a town full of herbivores, that is quite the achievement. No one in town was ever uncivil with him, perhaps a bit distant, but they were somewhat justified; a carnivore was not exactly a soothing site, especially this close to the Wilds. He was pleased that Ginger took a chance to get to know him better. He returned with her water and set it on the small table, "Here you are. Now, are you alright? You seem a bit shaken?"

She took a short sip of her water and sighed, "Could you sit closer, please?"

A bit taken aback by her request and slowly becoming genuinely concerned, "Alright."

He sat beside her, looking down due the height difference, "What is it?"

She took another drink, "Well, after you sheltered me here during that dreadful storm, my neighbor, Millicent, began noticing how often you would visit me and has been making a few comments about our relationship."

He immediately breathed a sigh of relief and smiled warmly, "Oh you know she loves to ruffle your fur. You recall the time she started calling you Long Ears?"

"Well I am rabbit; I am supposed to have long ears."

"And you recall how flustered that made you?"

She crossed her arms, pouting slightly, but a smile slowly graced her face, "Yes."

He placed a paw on her back, "She just likes to tease you."

Her smile widened and shook her head, "Oh, I know."

"Then why did you look so terrified earlier?"

Her smile faded as she looked away, "I'll tell you," she suddenly turned around, a toothy grin, "I'll tell you if you show me how your garden is doing!"

He leaned away, surprised by her sudden outburst, but pleased by her more cheerful demeanor, "You drive a hard bargain Miss Ginger, but you have a deal."

He stood up and led her down the hall, making a left down a tunnel dug into the wall. He crawled through and entered a deeper chamber, offering Ginger a paw as she emerged; he welcomed her to his garden. The walls of the dark chamber were visibly slick with a thin layer of water. The damp condition made it a fertile place for the multitude of fungi that littered the walls, the floor, and even the ceiling. Ginger took the lead, walking amongst the rows of large fungus, their dim light the sole source of illumination for the entire cave. She made her way towards the back of the cave, a particular fungus in mind. In the very back of the cave, looming over everything else, was an enormous glowing mushroom. A film of slime covered the cap, and along the edge, slimy tendrils hung motionlessly.

Of everything Lambert grew in his garden, Ginger loved this one the best. She gently touched one of the tendrils, causing it to sway lightly from side to side.

"I see you still enjoy Big Blue."

Ginger looked back, Lambert smiling and walking to her side, "He has been growing quite well, though he is getting a bit big though."

"I think he is wonderful."

"He is an exquisite specimen. And now that you have seen him, it is time for you to tell me what had you so frightened."

She turned back and ran a paw against the gills under Blue's cap, "I was nervous."

"About what?"

"Coming here."

Lambert was beginning to worry again and placed a paw on her shoulder, "Why?"

She took a deep breath and turned around with the same nervous anxiousness from before, and stared at me.

"Ginger?"

She took another deep breath, closing her eyes and putting on a determined face, "Lambert, I like you."

He did not respond immediately, just smiled awkwardly, "I like you too."

"No," she took a step forward and placed a paw on his chest, "I think I love you."

He was shocked, "I...I never knew."

She looked away, a hurt smile marking her flushed face, "I know this may come as a surprise."

"A bit."

Her paw gently grasped the fur it rested on, "But, I've been thinking about this for weeks and I finally built up the courage to do it. To see you again."

Lambert could feel his own cheeks flushing, whether from embarrassment or flattery, he was not entirely sure, "Well...I am glad you have this off your chest. But you know this would not work well. Carnivores are hardly trusted and...these kinds of relationships don't sit well with anyone."

She turned fully to him, smiling confidently, but her eyes betraying how deeply the truth hurt her, "I know. I know," she stepped forward and laid her head against his chest, "I have come to terms that I cannot have you unless we both give up our lives, and that is not fair to either of us."

He sighed and placed a paw around her back, "For what it is worth, would you have been born a wolf, I would happily take you as a mate."

She pushed away slightly and smiled.

"How about I make us some tea and," he was cut off as Ginger leapt forward, her sudden movement toppling them over. He opened his mouth to speak only to have it covered by hers. Ginger was grasping at his shoulders, her paws clenching his fur, as she pressed mouth against his muzzle. Lambert was again taken aback by Ginger's actions, but found it strange why his body felt so hot. This was certainly surprising, but this feeling was something different. She leaned away, still sitting on his abdomen, and panted lightly. Neither spoke for quite some time, just their breathing quietly echoing throughout the cavern.

"Ginger?"

"Yes?"

"What...I thought we just decided we cannot be together."

She idly ran her paw through his chest fur, "I know. I did. But I decided more than just confessing that."

Her touch felt strange; it sent an uncomfortable tremble through his body, but he was never ticklish along his stomach, "What else did you decide?"

"I want you. I want to love you. But I could never force either of us to give up the lives we have now. But I am willing, very willing, to give your life and mine, something special to share between you and me."

It had to be the embarrassment causing him to heat up like this. She was suggesting...that! Between them!

"Ginger...I...do not what to say."

She smiled and was about to speak, but he brought up one his paws to stop her, "Ginger, I am absolutely flattered by your...offer, but that is not something for me to have. We are different species. I should not be the one you give yourself to. Find another rabbit that makes you happy."

Her face continued growing a deeper shade of red, "Why though? Why can I not give it to you?"

"I am a wolf. I am...attracted to wolves. You are beautiful for a rabbit, but I cannot give you the appreciation you deserve. Another rabbit would be able to love you properly and appreciate you more.

She looked away, her eyes darting downward and her cheeks still aflame, "You are too modest. You are fully capable of everything you just said."

He smiled, clearly in disbelief, "I beg to differ."

She leaned forward, lying against him, her voice a near a whisper, "Then tell me this Lambert. If you truly feel that you could not adequately love and appreciate me-"

"Which I know I cannot."

She pushed her head into the crook of his neck for a moment before retreating slightly, "Then tell me what has been grazing my leg for the past few minutes."

She quickly leaned back, just enough to see the mortified expression on his face. If his fur were of a lighter shade, she was positive he would be a crimson red. He was motionless for a few moments then shifted slightly. He let out a small whine as his manhood grazed her leg again. The heat was not from embarrassment; he was aroused. He quickly grimaced, "Ginger, my goodness, I am so," she placed a paw on his muzzle.

"Lambert, it is okay," she leaned forward, "I want this."

She pushed her mouth against his again, this time, though hesitantly, Lambert followed suit, his paws slowly moving around her back and pulling her deeper into the embrace.
