The Border
Just a quick little story I decided to write. Just to see really if I can write a battle scene.
The Border
Written by Malovolpe
The sun was rising over a border region between the Republic of Velexia and the Republic of Drakonia. It was a war zone with smoking craters, large patches of fire, dead corpses and burnt out tank wrecks everywhere. Sitting on the Velexian side in trenches were the troops of the 12th Velexian Hunters. This regiment of about 2,000 soldiers was positioned in a deep trench along a defensive line that stretched across the entire border. Among them was a young Silver Phase Fox named Veleria, a Silver Fox. She wore the typical armor of a hunter, it was a typical light combat armor with a chest plate and a helmet that covered her entire head with advanced optical sensors and a re breather, it was painted charcoal Grey in color, the typical color of a Raider Regiment. In her hand was a Light Machine Gun with a belt of ammo wrapped around your neck and arm. Suddenly the loud thunder of artillery strikes began rattling the soldiers in the trench. It was the daily Drakonian Artillery bombardment.
Veleria kept her head down as mud was thrown high into the air from a nearby shell landing. Marcus was a lowly private, he was moving down the trench towards Veleria with extra LMG ammunition. Unlike most soldiers in the 12th Raiders, he wore a dull Grey uniform and a steel helmet that covered his entire head, he was like Veleria a Silver Phase. Veleria kept her weapon trained on the front, not even turning to look towards Marcus who had shown up with the extra ammo. "Its particularly intense this time you think?!", Marcus said loudly, his voice nearly muffled by the sound of explosions. "Receive any word from command?", Veleria asked, not looking away from the front. "Uh yeah... our own artillery are being withheld, so we're stuck without their support! Two full divisions are heading for our sector of the line, orders are to hold at all costs!", Marcus shouted over the explosions. "That is just fantastic!", she said sarcastically.
After what felt like an eternity, the artillery barrage lifted. Most of the soldiers in the trenches knew what was coming next, the dull howl of jet engines could be hear din the distance. Streaking in like silver bullets were a wing of DPAF fighter-bombers. The crackle of machine gun fire from their wings strafing the ground. An unlucky Red Fox was caught in the fire, a bullet going right through his neck. Veleria and Marcus both ducked, narrowly missing the hail of murderous fire. A few of them dropped incendiary bombs at the trenches, one hitting a section of trench not far from Veleria and Marcus' position. Some foxes ran out of the stricken area on fire, the rookies in the trenches cowered as the more experienced ones took aim at their stricken comrades and ended their suffering. More of the Reserve Infantry were moving into the trench as another sound was heard, a sound most Reserve Infantry dreaded but most Raiders have come to expect... tanks.
Marcus readied his assault rifle, steadying it on the firing ledge. Veleria had her LMG fixed on the direction the sound was coming from. The first thing they spotted however weren't tanks at all, but crowds of infantry. The wolf infantry of the Drakonian Peoples Army were less well equipped than the soldiers of the Velexian Free Corps. Their brown uniforms were emblazoned with red wolf paws. The officer in charge of the section gave the order and the Velexian troops opened up a torrent of fire at the oncoming wave. Veleria squeezed the trigger of her weapon, letting loose a three second burst of fire into the enemy. Many of them tumbling forward as their charge was cut short, Marcus shooting one in the chest as he got too close.
As the fighting continued, the number of wounded and dead was building up. About fourteen injured comrades were standing behind Veleria was she methodically fired bursts of murderous fire into the waves of oncoming wolves. Now the tanks were showing up, large mechanical behemoths with two turrets, the largest of which had a long barreled cannon. There were a company of eight of these monsters, slowly rolling their way towards the trenches. One of the behemoths heading towards Veleria's directions stopped and fired a high explosive shell at her position. The shell striking just short of her position, raining dirt and debris on top of her. Marcus pulled a pin on a grenade and tossed it at a small group of Drakonian soldiers trying to move onto the trench, the explosion sending shrapnel ripping through their bodies.
Seven of the tanks continued to crawl forward, one of them immobilized by a land mine. The tanks continued onward, unaware that a platoon of Tank Destroyers had positioned themselves on a high ridge behind the trench, giving them a commanding view of the battlefield. It was then that the Drakonian troops learned first hand the gunnery skills of a fox. The lead vehicle fired, a large caliber shell knocking out the tracks of one of the tanks. The second, third and fourth vehicles fired shortly after wards, knocking three more out. One of the remaining three tanks made the mistake of trying to turn around, the leading vehicle in the platoon firing a shell right into its rear, engulfing the tank in a ball of flame. The other two moving back in reverse, firing their machine guns as they did. The supporting infantry however surged forward in a large wave, many of them jumping into the trenches.
The fighting inside the trenches was vicious hand to hand fighting. Wolf and Fox fighting tooth and claw with their rifles, shovels, knives and even their helmets. Marcus stabbed a wolf in the chest with his bayonet while Veleria had used her machine gun to mow down any more Wolves trying to get into their section of the trench. One fox was being choked by the rifle of a wolf being pressed against his throat, Marcus promptly hitting the wolf in the back of the skull with his rifle. Despite being outnumbered, the melee was in the foxes favor and the enemy infantry began to fall back.
Sporadic fighting continued for the next few hours but by the end of the day the attack was over and the position was still in Velexian hands. Veleria took her helmet off, taking a large swig of water from her canteen. Almost all of her ammunition had been depleted and half of the foxes in her section were killed or wounded. Marcus was exhausted, in fact he was always exhausted at the end of the day. Veleria tossed him her canteen. "Drink up. Tomorrow is going to be worse.", she told him.
