Somebody That I Used to Know

I was riding in a car with my furry friend Michael, who was my only fox friend, late one night from a long day at work. It was around 8:45 pm, and the roads were completely empty, except for a car here and there. Michael was taking me home when realizes his tank is running on empty. He turns his head to look at me and said, "I'm going to have to go to a gas station to get some gas, I'm almost out."

I was looking out the window at the time, daydreaming. He nudged my arm, and I turned to look at him, "You dozed off again, is something wrong?"

I shook my head and laid my head on the head rest, "No, it was just a long day a work..."

It was Michael's turn to shake his head when he said, "Well, we work 10 hours a day, 5 days a week, of course you're going to be tired. After days like that, anyone is bound to get tired."

"I guess you're right."

We pulled up to a gas station and parked next to a pump. Michael opened the car door got out of the car and looked up to take note of what pump we were at. He looked back at me and said, "I'll be right back." He turned and went into the gas station. Since I had nothing else to do, I started to look around, I didn't see anything interesting except a little, rusty, beat-up pick-up truck, which seemed weird since were in Las Vegas.

Then I saw Michael come back out and start filling up the car. 3 minutes later, he got back in the car. Before he started the car, he looked over at that little pick-up truck I was staring at a little bit ago. He turned back to me and said, "You don't see cars like those here often." I shook my head in agreement. He started the car and we drove out of the gas station.

We were driving down W Tropicana Ave to get back to our home at Spring Valley. It was a nice little street, I liked looking at the trees on the right side of the street when we were drive down that road. We just pasted S Tenaya Way when Michael got a call, "Hello... what?! When... Ok." Then he hung up and turned to me, "its Sean, he was in a car crash."

My face went pale from the shock, how was Sean in a car crash, he was the safest driver I know. "Where is he?" I asked with worry.

"He's one street down from here, the ambulance hadn't put him in the truck yet." He looks back towards the road, obviously being more cautious for oncoming cars.

"Are we heading over to him?"

"Yes..."

It was a silent drive over to the crossroads at S Durango Dr and W Hacienda Ave. When we arrived, we were surprised at how bad the wreck was, it was a five car wreck, and one of the cars we barely recognized was Sean's Customized Nissan 240SX. It's pink paint job was half way turned to gray, his hood was 20 feet away from the car, and a wheel, unmistakably from Sean's car, was still rolling around. Sean's totaled 240SX wasn't the car that I recognized, we also found that rusty, beat-up pick-up truck, embedded into a concrete fence, most likely trying to dodge the wreck.

The paramedics were already at the scene, everyone was already taken out of their lifeless vehicles. We went to one of the paramedics, and I asked "Where's Sean?"

The paramedic turned around and said "If you're talking about that young brown haired kid, he's over there." She points to the two paramedics next to a stretcher nearby. Michael and I started running over to them to see a bloody Sean. I hadn't expected the wreck to be that bad. I looked to one of the paramedics and asked, "Is he going to be alright?"

The man shook his head and said, "I don't know, he's in a very bad condition..."

I look back towards the knocked out Sean, I didn't need medical knowledge to know he was right. The car also shown me that. I was getting even more worried. Then Michael came over to me and said, "It's going to be alright, I bet he will be alright."

Two more men ran over and hauled him into the ambulance and got back in and drove off with Sean. Michael, still right next to me, put his hand on my shivering shoulder, and then helped me up, saying, "Come on, lets head over to the hospital."

Knees still unstable, I hold on to Michael for support, then headed over to the car and he helped me into the passenger seat, and then he got in himself. Then we started heading over to hospital.

When we got there, we headed down the cold hallways to the benches in front of Sean's room, and we sat there. What was 30 minutes, seemed to have been 6 hours. When the doctor came out, I looked at him and asked, "Is he going to be alright?"

The shook his head, "No, he won't be alive for very long..."

When I heard this, it felt like my heart plummeted down a bottomless pit. My face turned as pale the wall.

Michael stood up and asked the doctor, "Can we go see him?"

"Sure, but you might want to hurry."

Michael helped me and we went into Sean's room, It was dark and cold in there and we saw Sean, laying in bed in the middle of the room, Surrounding him was was the monitors telling us how close he was to the next world.

We walked up to bed and looked down on him. When we arrived next to him, he woke up. He looked at both of us, and said, "Hey, guys..." He coughs twice and said, "Looks like I was careless, huh?"

I shook my head, "It, wasn't your fault..."

He look at me and said, "I know... I have to tell you something..."

"What?"

"Whatever happens, it's not bad to remember the bad times, but always try to remember the good times as well, ok?"

Right after he said that, we heard the monitor keeping track of his heart stopped. I fell to my knees, knowing that I will never see him again. Michael comes over to pick me up yet again, and we stood there for a bit, when the doctors came in, we left.

After that, I was a different man. From that event, not only did I learned to value my friends and my family, but to value life as well. I also learned to not only to remember the bad times sometimes, but also the good times.
