Chapter 2: Storage
#2 of The Longest Game
Chapter 2 of Graafen's journey onward through the fiendish games of the Dark Knight
Sitting up slowly Graafen shook his head as he peered into the darkness. His eyes were adjusting slowly; there was a very faint purple haze down in the pit that seemed to emanate from the rubbery floor. It was taking a long time for his eyes to adjust but as he peered toward where he had last seen Mick and Sandson he was able to make out their outlines. Growling deep in his throat Graafen flexed his claws, it took a lot of effort not to leap over there and beat the tar out of them. There were two of them after all and they were now stuck in this together.
"Would either of you fuck-wits care to tell me what you've dumped us all into?" He had a moment of satisfaction as their outlines jumped and turned. It didn't last long as they quickly moved to loom over his body.
"We are fucked that's what," Mick hissed, "No one we dump down here comes back out, at least not that we've seen." Thumping his heavy, scaled tail on the rubbery floor the lizard pushed his face up close to Graafen's. "I should... should.... ahhh." He turned and snapped his jaws at the monkey as he was pulled away by him.
"Stop it Mick, Karl fucking betrayed us, no point taking it out on the wolf." He crouched down, squinting against the gloom, trying to make out Graafen's face. "We dunno what happens, we were paid to snatch guys like us, well built, strong looking, dump em in this pit and walk away. We've done nearly thirty guys, us three brings the total all the way up," his face contorted into a grimace as he spat the next few words, "That... that fucker I thought was our friend well... you saw."
"Yeah," Graafen growled, "Tough luck to be you two and what about me?" He clambered to his feet so they were no longer looming over him and peered at the floor. "This is just weird, why the hell is the floor glowing?"
Sandson flung himself down, pressing his back against the wall of the pit, "Fuck knows wolfie, but we're all in this together now. So yeah, sorry we grabbed ya but it was for a job and I need... hah needed the cash."
"It's Graafen not wolfie and..." he was cut off as a melodious voice broke in over his.
"Oooh, I do so love it when you argue, such big strong boys like you. Are you going to fight each other in here? It's always so much fun to watch."
"Who..." Mick growled, crouching and turning in a slow circle, "Who's there... show yourself!"
"Oh stop that lizard... oooh its Mick isn't it? Karl's big muscle boy... and my, my... Sandson too, well I guess he kept his end of the deal. Now then let's get you three ready, we can start the games now we have enough."
"What..." Sandson shouted, "No! Let us out of here you weirdo, we worked for you! This isn't right!"
"Of course it is," the disembodied voice whispered, seeming to come from behind Graafen's shoulder and yet when he looked there was nothing. "You worked for Karl, he worked for me. If this is how he's decided to pay you back for all your help then good for him. It makes you just as eligible for the games as anyone else. Like the wolf here... such a strong specimen."
"I am not a specimen!" Graafen growled, "Show yourself; what the hell is going on here. I'm not playing any fucking games."
"Yes Graafen, you are, you're a contestant in the deadliest game of all."
"Wait... how did you..." Looking around, fear starting to creep into his voice the wolf shuddered as the oppressive, purple tinged darkness seemed to press in all around them. He was surprised when he bumped into the concrete wall of the pit. He'd backed up without thinking as if he could get away from that musical, mocking voice. Swallowing heavily the wolf backed his ears and whined, "What are you?"
"I'm the Memory Weaver and its time, the conditions have been met and you have no choice." The purple haze slowly increased in radiance, flooding the dark pit with its un-natural glare. Graafen looked around in confusion then gaped as he saw Sandson scrambling against the wall, trying to pull himself up. The monkey was sinking into the rubber which had turned gelatinous and molten beneath him.
"Help! Mick! HELP!" Sandson was sounding more panicked by the minute and the lizard was just shaking his head, refusing to move closer. Graafen shot him a dark look and took a step toward the monkey. Sure he'd got the wolf into this mess but he wasn't about to abandon him. Maybe he could pull him out. His thoughts were de-railed as the floor under his feet rippled and suddenly turned liquid. Graafen dropped like a stone, the strange, gelatinous rubber claiming him up to the waist in one smooth motion. He screamed and tried to pull his legs free but the thick gel just rippled and pulled him deeper. When he tried to push on the rubber and heave himself free it claimed his hands too, melting under them, the puddle of liquid goo expanding as he tried to pull free. Struggle as he might the wolf could not reverse his slow downward slide.
"Help! Mick stop being a dick and pull us out!" Sandson screamed; the monkey was almost under completely, the gel rippling and shifting, spreading out and accepting his weight.
The lizard just shook his head and growled, "No... no way I'm moving, you're done for, if I move I'm NO!" he screamed as without moving his feet at all the lizard plunged through the floor. There was no splash, not even a ripple, one moment the reptile was there, the next he was gone, consumed by the ground which rippled gently as the only sign of his passing. Graafen squirmed against the rubber, it wasn't even liquid, it felt like gel and it was being pushed back by his body weight, squeezed out of the way to let him in which made it all but impossible to fight against as it clung in a skin tight layer beneath the surface. His body was surrounded by the dark goo all the way to his chest now and it didn't feel like it was going to let him go anytime soon. Looking over at Sandson he watched the monkey take a deep breath before he vanished beneath the surface.
"Why?" Graafen growled, shaking his shoulders from side to side as the rubber floor claimed him up to the shoulders. There was no answer however and moments later Graafen's head was engulfed and the floor rippled then solidified, showing no sign of their passing.
